  • Young people’s perceptions of and coping with their ADHD symptoms : A qualitative study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2331-1886. ; 6:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose. This study aimed to explore how young people with ADHD perceive and cope with their ADHD symptoms in the context of their everyday life. The research also explores relationships between types of perceptions and types of coping. Method. A qualitative, inductive approach using individual semi-structured interviews to elicit and analyse young people’s perceptions of and coping with their ADHD symptoms. Results. Analysis of interviews with 14 young people has shown a variety of perceptions regarding the mechanism behind the ADHD symptoms. Three types of perceived reasons for the ADHD symptoms were found: because there is something wrong with me, because there is a mismatch between me and the environment, because this is my personality. Variation was also found regarding the perceived threat of the symptoms. The results identified three ways of coping with symptoms: following the symptoms, changing the environment, controlling oneself. A possible relationship between type of perception and type of coping was identified. Conclusion. Young people with ADHD perceive and cope with their symptoms in various ways. Perceptions of and coping with ADHD may relate to each other. This study highlights the importance of identifying young people’s perceptions of their ADHD in order to understand their attempts to cope with it.

  • Festival Venue that makes sense : A study of Skansen arena in Stockholm
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - : Cogent OA. - 2331-1886. ; 7:1, s. 1-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to investigate how the open-air museum ofSkansen in Stockholm as venue for celebration of Persian Fire Festival is assessed by thefestival’s visitors. The study is based on a delimited part of a larger online survey with280 completed questionnaires including both close-ended and open-ended questions, and a qualitative thematic analysis method has been used in this paper. The resultsshow a high level of appreciation of the Skansen venue that gives the visitors positiveemotions, meanings, place attachment, place identity and a sense of place. Contributingfactors have been the high status of the venue that has given the visitors pride anddignity; security and safety of the venue; size of the venue; and the natural beauty of thevenue. The most important disadvantage factor has been the lack of accessibilitycombined with lack of sufficient public transport. The results have implications for theSwedish society, for the policy makers in Stockholm city and for both the host and theorganiser of the festival and gives rise to new debates on immigrants’ socio-culturalintegration into Swedish society. This paper gives a contribution to existing literature onfestival venue and its impact on the visitor’s overall assessment of the festival.

  • Overtourism in Dubrovnik in the eyes of local tourism employees : A qualitative study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - : Taylor & Francis. - 2331-1886. ; 6:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article implies a qualitative methodological approach and has a focus on the local tourism employees in Dubrovnik and their perception of overtourism. The empirical data are based on 12 days’ field observation in July 2018, and 18 e-mail interviews with local tourism employees. The data analysis method has been thematic analysis. The interviewees show a high level of awareness and concern about the problem. Overcrowding, traffic congestion, various physical damages, displacement of locals in Old Town, low quality of tourist experiences and lower quality of life for locals, increased prices are among problems caused by overtourism in Dubrovnik. Factors related to seasonality, physical geographic conditions, cruise ships are the most problem makers and the interviewees prefer tourists that stay overnight. Their most frequent solution suggestions are reduction of the number of cruise ships followed by stricter rules of the establishment and of quality for accommodations, caterings and shops.

  • Discourse and power in the institutionalisation of corporate social responsibility (CSR) : A comparative perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - : Taylor & Francis. - 2331-1886. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines how companies use discourse in corporate social responsibility (CSR) self-reporting to construct their engagement in social issues. Discourse is examined through the lens of ‘interpretative repertoires’ used in the reporting, which appear as recurrent habitual sets of explanations that are constitutive of CSR’s meanings. Using an innovative perspective that combines discursive institutionalism with Foucault’s notions of knowledge, power and discourse, the article examines how interpretative repertoires are used in self-reporting and how this has social consequences. The contribution to CSR research is both theoretical and empirical. Beginning with the assumption that context is an important aspect of how discourse is constructed, the empirical material includes company self-reporting from two emerging economy contexts (South Africa and Mauritius) and two advanced welfare states (Sweden and the UK). The analysis reveals the ways in which interpretative repertoires reflect how the versions of CSR are anchored in institutional contexts. How these repertoires are constructed also reveals how companies exercise power by constructing the conditions, and setting the boundaries, for company engagement in social issues.

  • Genocide, joint criminal enterprise, and reconciliation : Interactional analysis of a post-war society in the context of legitimizing transitional capitalism
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 2331-1886. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The war in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1992–1995) is the historic background of this paper, as produced in the documents presented during international and national trials concerning war crimes committed during this period. A literature review forms the analytical basis and contains various empirical and theoretical studies from the fields of philosophy, war sociology, and social epistemology. The aim of this paper is to analyse the normative orientations and social values that affect (1) the feelings of moral and social understanding (or non-understanding) after the genocide and the joint criminal enterprise in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the context of legitimizing transitional capitalism, (2) the actions of individuals, organizations, and states as well as the entire social community in the post-war society, and (3) the process of reconciliation and trust in post-war society. The analysis makes evident the usual tendency in a post-war society to deify one’s own ethnic (religious) group, while the consequence of such false self-infatuation with “our” collective is that the “other” that is not ours becomes undesirable. It must be, as evidence of patriotism and unconditional emotional loyalty to “our holy issue”, wiped out for good. Ethnic cleansings, joint criminal enterprises, and genocides thus become a normal means of ethnopolitical—i.e. biopolitical—“management of differences”. At the same time, ethnocorruption and ethnobanditry can erroneously be qualified as the least transparent and, for social and criminological research, the most difficult phenomena (or manifestations) of social pathology. The difficulty lies in the fact that ethnocorruption and ethnobanditry are in many respects related and intertwined with the simultaneous institutional and organizational processes of regulating (or not regulating) the economic and political globalization and transfer of ownership during the transition from socialist self-management to a new type of economy.

  • Managing tourism during the COVID-19 pandemic. A systematic review of crisis management in the tourism industry
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - Abingdon, Oxon : Cogent OA. - 2331-1886. ; 10:1, s. 1-18
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • COVID-19 has caused severe economic crises, unemployment, and disruptions to the global tourism industry. This study aims to establish the current body of knowledge on crisis management in tourism published from to 2001–2021, with the objective of providing research avenues on how to manage crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The study shows that crisis management in tourism is based on the survival strategies of the tourism subsectors in Europe, Asia, the USA, and Australia. A universal approach is limited, indicating the immaturity of the research in this area. There is a need to expand the analysis including approaches in Africa and strategies of the tourism subsectors during the COVID-19 pandemic. This knowledge of the local tourism subsectors that focus need to be put upon are limited. The literature is fragmented, lacks precision, and is a common approach that the tourism industry should follow during uncertain situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The absence of a theoretical framework on crisis management that is inclusive of what tourism could rely on during such situations is a concern. This study contributes to the framework that tourism researchers, policymakers, and practitioners could rely upon when dealing with crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. © 2024 The Author(s). • Doing and undoing gender in rice business and marketplaces in Tanzania
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2331-1886. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper contributes to the gender-and-marketplace literature by exploring whether and how the ongoing, under-researched food-to-cash crop transformation of rice in Tanzania reinforces or challenges the "doing of gender". We apply Acker's "doing gender" framework, where gender is done by following normative conceptions and undone by challenging them. We analyze women and men's everyday practices and relations in terms of identities, divisions, symbols and interactions. The empirical material includes observations, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with women and men traders, farmers and key informants at two rice markets in Kyela, south-western Tanzania. We find that this transformation of rice has resulted in more processes of doing than undoing gender. Too, more women than men undo gender. Since men and masculinity are constructed as superior to women and femininity, this makes it more difficult for men to undo gender. The structures of the marketplaces also seem to influence these processes. Surprisingly, the old marketplace offers more avenues to undo gender, whereas the new, government-initiated marketplace reinforces the doing of gender. We conclude that this commercialization trajectory, including associated interventions, exacerbates rather than reduces gender inequalities. Future agricultural interventions should therefore consider both technical and social aspects to yield desired outcomes.

  • Health-promotive and exclusionary mechanisms in civil society : A critical review of the empirical support for Putnam’s view of social capital
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - : Taylor & Francis. - 2331-1886. ; 7:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A critical, integrative review in the SocINDEX database was conducted to screen empirically grounded research on civil society and health among youth. Our initial search string resulted in 477 hits, and our final selection was 58 articles. We found both promotive and excluding processes emanating from civil society. The engaged participants seem to empower themselves and live healthier lives, but simultaneously, they tend to exclude those with poorer health and status. Civil society does not seem to have the ability to resolve the existing stratifications, and there are risks of reinforcing the existing inequalities. Partly due to insufficient theoretical detail, there was also significant room for circular reasoning since the operationalisations of participation in civil society, social capital and health often overlapped. Of the three mechanisms proposed by Robert Putnam as links between networks and health, social control seems to have the best support in the reviewed empirical studies.

  • Medical students experience mistreatment, with a focus on gender discrimination. Cross-sectional study at one Swedish medical school
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - : Taylor & Francis. - 2331-1886. ; 9:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim was to study discrimination, with a focus on gender and sexual harassment among medical students at Uppsala University in Sweden. A survey was sent via email to all registered medical students in the spring semester of 2020. Data were compared with two previous studies. Questions about gender and sexual harassment were the same as in the study conducted in 2002 and 2013. In addition, the 2020 survey included a question about other grounds of discrimination. Forty percent, that is, 453 out of 1,130 medical students, participated. The proportion of students reporting gender-based discrimination during the preclinical semesters was similar for females and males. During the clinical semesters, significantly more females than males reported gender discrimination (41% vs. 21.5%, p = 0.005) and sexual harassment (22% vs. 5%, p = 0.001). Physicians were the most commonly reported perpetrator. Reports about not being respected had increased from 2% to 20% between 2013 and 2020 among female clinical students. The prevalence of those who experienced several sexually harassing behaviors increased for the female and male clinical students and the female preclinical students. Receiving an unwelcome touch increased from 1% to 7% for the female clinical students. Discrimination due to ethnicity was reported by 36% of the students born in a country other than Sweden compared to 3% of those born in Sweden. Our findings confirm that experiences of different forms of discrimination exist in this medical school, and females and minorities are particularly affected.

  • Experiences with crisis management when child sexual abuse was perpetrated by staff in early childhood education : A Swedish case study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 2331-1886. ; 8:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Institutional child sexual abuse is a concern for children, families, and society. Limited research has explored how school leaders and municipalities handle cases of sexual abuse in educational settings. This case study examines how a municipality managed the suspicion that 19 toddlers were sexually abused by an educator at several Early Childhood Education and Care institutions (ECEC). A nine-member crisis management team was formed that included key persons from the department of education and social welfare. During the initial phase of the investigation, only the team members were informed about the suspected abuse. In individual interviews, team members were asked how the team was organised and how their plans were implemented. In addition, they were asked about their experiences of participating in the crisis management. Three themes were identified: the set-up of the crisis management, the implementation of the crisis management plan, and important experiences. The crisis team emphasised that a child perspective rather than a general crisis perspective was applied and this approach was operationalised by key people in the educational and social welfare sectors. This paper highlights the impact of this case on the respondents as well as implications for the educational sector.

  • Subjective temporal well-being: Defining, measuring, and applying a new concept
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2331-1886. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Time scarcity has become part and parcel of our modern predicament, with individuals' temporal experiences emerging as a central factor for their wellbeing. Despite the widespread experience of time-related problems, however, no comprehensive method to measure the subjective temporal dimensions of this experience have been generally accepted. This article seeks to take a step in addressing this gap by introducing a new concept called "Subjective Temporal Well-being". In the first part of the article, the new concept is defined in its two fundamental dimensions, anchoring it to the experience of a low level of perceived time pressure and a high level of satisfaction with how one's time is spent. Next, the concept is subjected to an empirical examination using a data-set consisting of 1,000 Swedish respondents. The concept is related to other, existing measures of well-being, and the particular characteristics of individuals found in the present research to have especially "high" and "low" temporal well-being are mapped. The concept of Subjective Temporal Well-being is proposed to provide a comprehensible and tangible angle for the study of key dimensions of people's everyday lives, which in some cases can be more suitable than the notion of overall well-being. Finally, the implications of the new concept are explored in terms of its possible applications in statistical surveys and its usefulness for academic research.

  • Sex in/and Sweden: Sexual rights discourses and radical sexual politics in Sweden
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2331-1886. ; 3:1, s. 1-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tracing historical as well as current understandings that contribute to shape discourses of sexual rights, this article aims to show how particular understandings of sexuality interact in the discursive production of Sweden as a modern, rational and liberal nation. Inspired by recent developments in queer theory, I engage in a broader critique of how understandings of sexuality intersect with notions of gender, class, “race”/ethnicity and national identity. With departure in three historical points of impact for the development of sexual rights, I provide a historical contextualization to tease out the specific features of sexual rights’ discourses in this context. Guided by an interest to study how particular discourses of sexual rights come to retain a status as legitimate and “true”, I then conduct a close reading of a graphic novel, as well as of the reception of this novel. Finding that normative understandings of love and sexuality in mainstream culture sustain their status by a selective inclusion of more radical views, I show that the dominant view of sexual rights in Sweden is ambivalent. Here, I use discourse analysis to illuminate how notions of equality is constructed through processes of normalization. Drawing on these findings, I conclude the article by arguing for the need of a critical engagement with norms as collective sites for political resistance.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - Abingdon : Cogent OA. - 2331-1886. ; 5:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: In the modern labour market entering and maintaining employment is challenging for youth in general. Young adults with intellectual disability face major difficulties in establishing an occupation. A substantial group of young adults with intellectual disability who are Not in Employment, Education or Daily activity (NEED) have been identified. The aim of this study is to describe and analyse the family situation for those who are NEED.Materials and methods: A national database with 12,269 persons was used, where 24.1% (N = 2,955) of the total were NEED. Family situation in terms of civil status, having children, and living with one’s parents, along with background factors were examined. Results: Family situation and background factors have significant associations with not having, as opposed to having, an occupation (employment, education, or daily activity), but differ for men and women. For example, partnerships and having children were only significant for women. Conclusions: This study contributes to the multidimensionality in understanding young people with intellectual disability who are not participating in traditional occupations, where the family situation is an important aspect. This knowledge can contribute to future research and be useful in practice to develop holistic supports that increase participation in occupations.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - Abingdon : Cogent OA. - 2331-1886. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Self-determination and the ability to express opinions and preferences are fundamental to all people. Some people with intellectual disability no longer accept a subordinated role as disabled and new self-advocacy groups have evolved. The aim of this study was to analyse the meaning and importance of engagement in a self-advocacy group for self-advocates daily life and identity. An interpretative abductive approach was used to analyse data from interviews with 26 self-advocates from six self-advocacy groups in Sweden in relation to the theoretical concepts; recognition, social capital, culture capital and self-determination. The key finding is that the vast majority of the participants experienced a changed self-perception, as more skilled, social and confident people, depending on group affiliation, their personal engagement and positions within the group. The conclusion is that self-advocacy is important for daily life and identity of people with intellectual disability. The self-organized movements indicate an important change in society and the results are of importance not only for the target group but for shaping future support and treatment from society of people with intellectual disability.

    • This paper explores the links between the socio-cultural power structures of the Poro and Bondo secret societies and their interactions with internationalist human rights discourse in postconflict Sierra Leone. It argues that these secret societies offer gendered and cultural spaces that serve as social and political mobilizing symbols. These societies further provide forums as well as a stage for counter-discourses about gender-based violence and human rights violations, particularly with regards to the campaign against female circumcision. The paper concludes that despite internal tensions and squabbles, the Bondo secret societiy has gained most of its present-day solidarity by broadly disseminating to both members and non-members the highly charged narrative that the society’s exposure leads to its destruction. The Bondo society has been able to maintain cohesion and defend its interests by appropriating and invoking traditional knowledge and ritual codes. This paper explores the links between the socio-cultural power structures of the Poro and Bondo secret societies and their interactions with internationalist human rights discourse in postconflict Sierra Leone. • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2331-1886. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For centuries and emboldened by colonial treaties, Egypt has enjoyed overwhelming hydro-hegemony in the (NBR) Nile Basin River region. However, Egyptian dominance over the NBR has been challenged by Ethiopia following her unilateral construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. Using A qualitative, deductive approach based on multiple sources of evidence, this paper analyses the historical imbalance in the Nile colonial treaties that gave Egypt monopoly over the waters of the NBR. The article also describes various human security threats in the Benishangul-Gumuz region, where the dam project is located and the geopolitical implications of this development against the backdrop of climate change and the coming of new actors and donors such as China, including the leasing of land to corporations and countries such as India, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. We recommend collaborative and holistic management instead of the dominant state-centric water development approach in this international waterway. The development of sustainable cooperation over this shared waterway will help meet climate change challenges and mitigate the contemporary conflict between Ethiopia and Egypt, including other countries within the region.

  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - United Kingdom : Taylor & Francis Group. - 2331-1886. ; 2:1, s. 1-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the United Nations Decade for Women (1975–1985) gender-based violence (GBV) has increasingly received global attention and eventuated in the earmarking of June 23rd, 2011 as the first-ever International Widow’s Day. This case study examines the social logic of superstitious beliefs and associated fears sustaining the dehumanizing practice of widowhood rites and practices (WRP) with its negative consequences on women’s well-being among the Balengou of Western Cameroon. It argues that WRP should be understood through the double process of disavowal and projection, “false consciousness” and as a “patriarchal bargain”. It argues for the strengthening of women’s rights through gender-neutral marriage, succession and inheritance legislation based on notions of equality and social justice between the sexes, the harmonization and humanization of WRP, and an intersectionalist approach to GBV and development.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - London : Taylor & Francis Group. - 2331-1886. ; 2:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigated the effects of ethnicity and gender on the health of young people (14–25 years old) living in Mauritius. Combinations of female and male by four ethnic groups—“Creole”, “Hindu”, “Muslim” and “Mixed”—were used for multivariate analysis of variances. “Mixed” ethnic group consumed most to-bacco, alcohol and drugs compared to other ethnic groups. They were also the ones that mostly skipped breakfast and lunch and were found to eat most fast food. Moreover, “Mixed” ethnic group had heard most about HIV/AIDS programmes, but were least satisfied with such programmes and with public hospitals and health services. Females were shown to perceive more physical and mental health issues than did males; although males smoked more cigarettes and drunk more alcohol. However, females consumed more fast food and deep fries and rated public hospi-tals and sexual and reproductive health services as less good than did males. The findings call for further research on the health of young people living in Mauritius with respect to socio-economic variables in order to promote social justice in the Mauritian society. In addition, this article also emphasises on the need of having a new National Youth Policy for Mauritius, which is long overdue.

    • The aim was to investigate the effects of gender and ethnicity on Facebook visit and identity among young people (14–25 years old) living in Mauritius. According to the results obtained, males were shown to visit more Facebook and had a stronger Facebook identity than did females. However, females compared to males considered themselves to be persons that are more similar online as offline, and their Facebook activity represented more who they were than it did for males. Hindu participants were shown to most infrequently visit Facebook. They were also the group with the weakest Facebook identity. Creole and Muslim groups were reported to have the strongest Facebook identity followed by the Mixed participants. This study concludes that both gender and ethnicity might have a sig-nificant impact on Facebook activity and identification among young people.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 2331-1886. ; 6:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to investigate associations between social media use, self-reported health, dietary behaviours, and gender among young people living in Mauritius. For this cross-sectional study, questionnaires were distributed to a sample of 492 individuals (of which 64% were females) aged 14–29 year. A linear regression analysis investigating the associations between health problems and social media use, a number of dietary choices and behaviours, and gender was found to explain 49.9% of the variance in the prevalence of health problems, with social media use making the largest unique contribution (beta = 0.48). A MANOVA analysis found that there were significant gender differences in social media use, unhealthy food consumption, and self-reported health problems. This article concludes that the clash between gender, fast technological developments, and the influx of unhealthy foods in a glocal place has effects on young people through social media, and need to be monitored closely by youth and health policy-makers and researchers.

    • Mass media play a critical role through the production of news in influencing how citizens have their perceptions and opinions shaped. This article intends to delve into the role of news production in creating knowledge and shaping public perception and opinion within the Syrian case and demonstrates that news is not an accidental occurrence, neither in terms of subject or timing. Articles on specific issues, such as the reaction to the chemical weapons attack of August 2013 and the allegations of “industrial killings” by the Syrian government, appearing in the mass media, are subjected to analysis based on the theoretical notions outlined in the paper. These two cases hint that the timing and nature of these specific news events are not as “random” and coincidental as would seem at first glance.

    • In September 2010 and February 2011, the Canterbury region was rocked by a series of earthquakes. The success or otherwise, of a recovery from a crisis can be found in the perceptions of stakeholders. Many different stakeholders exist, including different levels of Government, bureaucratic institutions and state institutions, private enterprise, non-governmental organisations and the public. In this article, the public are the focus and their perception of the recovery is collected. An online survey was conducted, and it demonstrates a significant gap between the Government’s perception and the perception of residents of Christchurch. How do publics react when they feel as though they have been marginalised by the authorities charged with the crisis event recovery? The Government’s account of success is not shared by the majority of respondents, who have mobilised politically using social media platforms. There are implications for Governments and authorities that are seen to fail segments of the public in the age of social media, where crisis management and public relations meet and political mobilisation against officials and official bodies takes place.

  • The politics of collective memory and intergenerational transmission : Victory Day in Ural Newspaper coverage
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - 2331-1886. ; 9:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The significance and symbolism of the Great Patriotic War and Victory Day has grown in its political and social importance in terms of the communication of collective memory in the inter-generational transmission of norms and values by mass media. Victory Day is the iconic moment that has come to symbolise and concentrate the desirable values and traits required of "good" citizens to meet the contemporary challenges of domestic politics and international relations. This article uses Framing Analysis of 21 articles from five local and regional newspapers' coverage of Victory Day in 2021 in the Sverdlovsk Oblast during the Coronavirus pandemic. The indicative findings of the study hint at the role of local and regional media in shaping the collective memory of readers to further align the contemporary individual narrative with the collective narrative of this communicated memory. There are a clear set of historical values and behaviour related to a sense of group belonging and collective purpose that are taken from the communicated memory of the Great Patriotic War through Victory Day celebrations and applied to the Coronavirus crisis.

  • The Swedish alcohol monopoly : A bottleneck for microbrewers in Sweden?
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2331-1886. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The evolution of the craft beer sector has been gaining traction around the world since the 1980s, developing from factors such as an increased demand for alternative and locally distinct flavours in beer, increased interest in pairing food with the right type of beer, and increased income levels. Meanwhile, the economic and political contexts for establishing and running craft breweries differ between cities, regions, and nations. This study takes its point of departure from the producer perspective of the craft beer sector in the alcohol monopoly of Sweden, where the interest in craft breweries has also developed quickly over the last decades. The main purpose of the study is to contribute to the understanding of producer perspectives on operating in an alcohol monopoly, and how this effects development opportunities. The study has an explorative, mixed methods approach and is based on a survey encompassing all Swedish craft brewers as well as qualitative data from northern Sweden, including interviews with craft beer producers, site visits, and document analysis. The conclusions provide a complex picture of the Swedish alcohol monopoly and its impact on the craft brewers, and hence the development of the craft beer sector. However, the critical dimensions are more pronounced among the producers, suggesting that the Swedish organisation favours large-scale breweries, creates uncertain market conditions, leads to quick and unexpected decisions, and creates logistical difficulties. From an international comparative dimension, this indicates that the craft beer sector in Sweden could benefit from and grow even stronger with modifications to the market conditions according to the situation in other geographical contexts.

  • Space and the emotional topography of populism in Turkey : The case of Hagia Sophia
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2331-1886. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the past decade, as ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) initiated Turkey’s authoritarian populist turn, it sought to derive legitimacy through extra-institutional avenues, notably the emotional appeal to the repressed “people”, advancing the party’s socio-political vision, countering the arguments of its political opponents and reaching out to, and inspiring its constituency. Turkey’s urban space, bearing the marks of a century of republicanism, provided fertile ground for the deployment of emotion. This article, drawing on an analysis of the events surrounding the mosque conversion of Hagia Sophia and of the relevant media coverage, as well as on elements of 28 interviews with informants with political sympathies across the political spectrum, constitutes an attempt to contribute to the broader discussion of the emotional topography of populism in Turkey.

  • Dilemmas associated with tenant participation in renovation of housing in marginalized areas may lead to system change
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2331-1886. ; 4:1, s. 1-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents the results of an investigation, conducted in Sweden, of how inviting tenants to participate in renovation of large-scale housing in marginalized areas can lead to increased tenant power over renovation. The results show that the “Consultation model for renovation” employed, which was developed by the Union of Tenants, gives more power to tenants than previous models used in Sweden, although certain dilemmas exist that seem to be hard to overcome. The article concludes by discussing the role of “consultation models”. It suggests that it would be very interesting if such models not only aimed to give tenants power over renovation—within the framework housing companies are prepared to offer at the time—but also contributed to challenging practices and played a role in system change.

  • The zero option – tenant experiences from an experiment to renovate apartments without increasing rent
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2331-1886. ; 6:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To avoid “renoviction”, a public housing company in a stigmatized neighbourhood in Sweden (Hammarkullen) decided to renovate its rental apartments suffering from neglected maintenance using a “zero option” with regard to rent increase. The present article is based on content and thematic analysis of tenant interviews, documents and mass media articles. It describes the tenants’ views on this initiative and its consequences for them. The results show that they welcomed the “zero option”, but were dissatisfied with how it was designed. It did not live up to the maintenance responsibility for the entire apartment that, according to established practice, housing companies always have. It also did not solve the basic problems experienced by the tenants. They had their own ideas about how a “zero option” could have been designed to live up to their expectations. With an “action net” or “connective actions” approach, the housing company, in close collaboration with the tenants, could have succeeded in codesigning a “zero option” for renovation, with the potential to deal with environmental as well as social, economic, technical and other aspects.

  • Energy market wars as a factor of military-political escalation in Eastern Mediterranean region : A Russian perspective
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - : Taylor & Francis. - 2331-1886. ; 8:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Regional multipolarity has increased the complexity of geopolitical interests along with the worsening of international relations. Geopolitics is a means of not only interpreting the state of the political environment, but also in projecting the desired geo-economic end state for an actor. A much more pragmatic approach to securing perceived national interests is observed among newly emerging non-Western international actors in the Mediterranean region. This article analyses the energy factor which influences military-political situation in Eastern Mediterranean region with an emphasis upon Turkey and Russia’s sometimes cooperation and sometimes competition. The decision by Greece, Republic of Cyprus and Israel on commencement of construction of EastMed gas pipeline has been analysed. This decision was considered to be one of the key causes of the escalation in Libya. The conclusion is that Turkey strives to complicate the laying of any gas pipelines stretching from south-eastern direction to Europe bypassing its territory. The Russian escalation factor was also analysed. Finally, strategic risks for Turkey relating to its build-up of a military presence in Libya have been identified. These factors form the basis for consequences of possible escalation of conflict for the entire region.

  • Open comparisons of social services in Sweden : Why, how and for what?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - : Taylor & Francis. - 2331-1886. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Open Comparisons is a soft power governance method using data collected from the municipalities for benchmarking their activities. Open Comparisons in Sweden may have different national goals, such as to measure quality, policy development and democratic openness. The overall aim of this paper is to describe and analyze the use of Open Comparisons to monitor the social welfare services—social assistance, child and youth care, and treatment of alcohol and drug abuse. Four focus group interviews were carried out with professionals from eight municipalities. Results show that Open Comparisons measures the technical quality of activities by reviewing what is available, such as routines and agreements, but says little about trickle down to client level. The findings are discussed in a wider context of overall goals of Open Comparisons related to soft power governance and governmentality which includes how the social services may internalize this way of thinking.
