  • A content analysis of environmentally sustainable logistics - A complexity outlook
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Ptoceedings of the 22nd Annual NOFOMA Conference : Logistics and Supply Chain Management in a Globalised Economy - Logistics and Supply Chain Management in a Globalised Economy.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose of this paper The purpose of this article is to explore themes and challenges in making logistics environmentally sustainable with a complexity theoretical perspective. Design/methodology/approach The research is explorative and based on a cross-sectional design focusing on different entities of supply chains. The study set out with a systematic review and content analysis of articles in top-ranking related journals from logistics, transportation, sustainability and environmental areas. Findings The findings show that there is a great gap between the sustainable logistics challenges, and the models and frameworks for approaching and handle these. While the vast majority of models and solutions are based on reductionistic principles and simplified views on reality, the results indicate that obstacles in developing logistics in an environmental-friendly way are both complicated and complex as it involves paradoxes, contradictions and system-wide effects. Research limitations/implications (if applicable) Sustainability in this article is mainly related to environmental issues. Analysis of complex interactions between complex environmental pillar with complex social and economic pillars could provide opportunities for future research. Practical implications (if applicable) The offered results in this paper provides a systematic structure for classifying issues related to logistics sustainability, something that will be beneficial for managers and policy-makers when approaching sustainable logistics challenges. What is original/value of paper Identification, classification and analysis of current problems and challenges of environmental sustainability of logistics are new. This paper also presents a thorough summary of previous approaches and studies of sustainable logistics.

  • SCM PRINCIPLES VS. LEGAL PRINCIPLES: CHALLENGES AND FRICTION
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: The 22nd Annual NOFOMA Conference. - 9788792471055 ; , s. 581-596
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose of this paper: Logisticians propose changes to improve supply chains, and legal practitioners are doing likewise, but from a tax perspective. Proposals from one domain increasingly have an impact on the other due to e.g. globalisation – but cross-disciplinary knowledge often seems small. Our purpose is to facilitate interaction between the domains by increasing joint understanding of principles used in each domain, and to inquire into potential frictions and challenges. Design/methodology/approach: Management principles for efficient logistics/SCM and key principles governing the legal systems are first summarized both on a paradigmatic and action level. Illustrations from practice are presented. These have been obtained by a cross-functional team interviewing both logisticians and lawyers. Findings are based on cross-functional comparative analysis of principles and illustrations. Findings: Frictions between operational principles from each domain were found, with some principles harder to reconcile than others. There are also challenges between the two paradigms of logistics and law that influence the operational principles. Research limitations/implications (if applicable: Some implications are that the knowledge gap, challenges and frictions between the professions and domains, both in practice and academia, would benefit from more research. Examples are given of laws that contradict current logistics principles. Practical implications (if applicable): Although trivial, logisticians and lawyers need to cooperate better. We show on a fundamental level, with practical examples, kinds of challenges and frictions occurring. What is original/value of paper?: The cross-functional approach with law, and the discussion/comparison of principles.

  • Greening Logistics Through and Beyond Transport Efficiency
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Competitiveness though Supply Chain Management and Global Logistics. - 9788799743308 ; , s. 612-629
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ABSTRACTPurposeIn order for logistics to become greener, logistics service providers (LSPs) need to be included in the greening of supply chains. A key to become proactive members of a supply chain is that their business supports the greening of their activities – otherwise greening will not reach beyond single initiatives and demonstration projects. The purpose of this paper is to explore how LSPs’ underlying business logics can help in understanding LSPs green activities and aspects.Design/methodology/approachA multiple case study was carried out of three LSPs in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The analysis relies on the growing literature on LSPs and their environmental efforts, and the business logic is based on a strategic approach to business literature.FindingsThe findings indicate that the efficiency-based business logic commonly applied by LSPs in some respect supports the greening of logistics. Differences among the cases suggest that customer interaction is crucial for realising a greening of LSPs business models.Research limitations/implicationsThe results rely on case studies of large LSPs in the Nordic countries. To a certain extent the results of this research can be generalised also to smaller LSPs, however with restrictions. The results are discussed in relation to the geographical markets for the researched cases.612NOFOMA 2014 Proceedings Copenhagen Business SchoolPractical implicationsThe customer interaction and the customer selection has a great impact on the development of green logistics services, as these aspects both influence the efficiency in the activities and the dynamics in the development of new services.Originality/valueThe business logic approach to greening LSPs’ activities is suggested as important but seldom applied in empirically based research. This paper demonstrates how such an approach can support the identification of viable green efforts among LSPs. Furthermore, the paper contributes to the understanding of environmental issues in relation to the business of LSPs.

  • Drivers and Barriers for Collaborative Environmental Sustainability : Transport Buyers' Perceptions
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Competitiveness through Supply Chain Management and Global Logistics. - Copenhagen : Copenhagen Business School Press. - 9788799743308 ; , s. 458-474
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ABSTRACTPurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate transport byers perception of drivers and barriers for collaborative environmental sustainability and how this interrelate with the companies’ degree of knowledge about logistics service providers and their degree of collaboration with these logistics service providers.Design/methodology/approachThis research is based on an electronic questionnaire-survey distributed to Danish transport buyers. The questionnaire was distributed to 344 transport purchasers of which 82 have made complete and useful answers leading to an overall response rate of 24 per cent.FindingsThe main drivers for environmental sustainability are identified as: 1) demand from top management to focus on environmental sustainability, 2) avoiding loosing reputation, and 3) a feeling of ethical obligation. The main barriers are identified as: 1) difficulties to visualize the benefits of sustainability, 2) lack of data and information about sustainability, and 3) customers are not willing to pay for sustainability. In addition, the paper provides evidence for that the drivers for environmental sustainability positively affect knowledge of logistics service providers and collaboration with environmental issues.458NOFOMA 2014 Proceedings Copenhagen Business SchoolResearch limitations/implicationsThis research is based on a survey of Danish companies purchasing logistic services and thus solely represents a Danish transport buyer perspective. Thus, future research can explore how the view is different in specific logistics buyer and service provider relationships and other national contexts.Practical implicationsMore research is needed on a differentiated perspective on environmental sustainability in the relation to the purchase of materials versus service offerings.Originality/valueThis paper provides evidence of a paradoxical nature of drivers and barriers for environmental sustainability grounded in the extant body of literature compared with the empirical findings in this study.

  • A Packaging Redesign Project at IKEA
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Nordic case reader in Logistics and Supply Chain Management. - 9788776741358
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • IKEA is a product developing company, known for putting packaging and logistics issues at the top of its agenda. At IKEA, the product and the packaging are developed concurrently with the aim of lowering the total cost from the supplier to the customer. During the years 2002 to 2004, a pckaging redesign project was conducted at IKEA. The purpose of the project was to redesign the packaging for an existing product in order to minimize empty space. Very early on, it was evident that the suggested new packaging solution required a product redesign along with new manufacturing and packaging equipment. The product, tealights, was a complicated product due to safety regulations, standard sizes, etc. The project group not only had to involve different functions within IKEA but also had to convince a tealight manufacturer to collaborate. The results of the project had great implications for the logistics activities in the supply chain and affected all supply chain actors in many ways. The case is a good example of the interdisciplinary nature of packaging and its relations with product design and logistics activities.

  • The packaging selection practice a case study
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: [Host publication title missing]. ; , s. 761-776
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose of this paper The purpose of this paper is to present a comparative case study of the procedures and guiding principles in the packaging selection practice of two international companies. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative case study with an inductive approach was conducted. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews, documentation, and field visits. Findings The study indicates conceptual similarities and dissimilarities in the two companies’ procedures, concerns and priorities with respect to the packaging domain. The packaging selection practice at the two companies appears to be highly dependent on total cost, standardization, production philosophy, and collaboration between different functions and units. Research limitations/implications A study of two case companies implies limitations to generalization of the findings. Nevertheless, the case companies represent two diverse industrial branches providing a good basis for conceptual similarities and dissimilarities. Practical implications The findings of the study have practical implications generated by increased understanding of the guiding principles and their influence on the packaging selection process with respect to different types of packaging. This in turn, has a positive financial impact, enhances efficiency and effectiveness in the supply and demand chains, and considers environmental issues. Originality/value No previous similar study addressing the packaging selection approach in an engineering B2B industry context has been identified. This paper attempts to contribute to the theory-building of the packaging selection practice, point out the importance of considering the packaging selection and its guiding principles in order to make a deliberate and motivated packaging selection, and can be of value to other academic researchers in the field.
