    • The Thermo Chemical Accumulator (TCA) is a chemical heat pump driven by low temperature heat that has integral heat storage with high energy density. This makes the device very suitable for solar cooling. The working pair consists of Lithium Chloride and water, and energy is stored and released by desorption and absorption of water under near vacuum conditions. In contrast to most absorption processes and chemical heat pumps, the TCA works with three phases: solid, solution and vapour. This results in near constant operating conditions during charge and discharge, independent of state of charge. This paper describes the fundamental working principles of the TCA as well as a simple steady state model for the TCA. A temperature difference between theoretical and effective temperature in the reactor during absorption and desorption was required in order to get reasonable agreement with measurement data of a prototype TCA machine. For absorption, this value for subcooling was 15°C, which is significantly higher than has been found for low-temperature absorption chillers, indicating potential for improvement. For desorption the value was 7.5°C. The TCA has desorption temperatures of below 100°C for ambient temperatures below 40°C, which is relatively low. The temperature lift depends on the cooling rate supplied and varies from 15°C for the design cooling rate of 5 kW per TCA unit and 30°C inlet temperature to the reactor, to 20°C for a cooling rate of 2.5 kW. The energy density for storage was 180 kWh/m3 for the tested prototype.

  • Mapping potential location for bilberry picking with remote sensing, local field data andphone application

    • The aim of the study was to create a practical method for identifying potential locations for bilberry picking with help of remote sensing, local field data and phone application to support the development of the local berry value chain. Local field data w as collected 2021 and 2022 and consisted 503 and 525 plots from a study area of circa 25x45km in Västerbotten, Sweden. The potential for bilberry production was evaluated by measuring the shrub cover and amount of raw berries. Wall to wall remote sensing d ata included a Sentinel 2 image from same summer, airborne laser scanning data from 2020 and other map products. We created classification models for bilberry shrub and yield using both logistic regression (2 classes) and ordinal regression (3 classes) mod els using 2021 data, and validated and calibrated models with 2022 data. Predictor variables consisted of spectral metrics from satellite data; structural metrics from laser data; existing raster maps of tree species, stand attributes, site index, soil moi sture and land use classes. The 2 class models performed better than three class models, delivering the AUC 0.73, overall accuracy 0.83 and kappa value 0.51 for best bilberry shrub model and 0.75, 0.77 and 0.50 respectively for best bilberry yield model. T he best models included both laser based structural metrics describing e.g canopy closure and spectral metrics, but also e.g. volume of pine, soil moisture and site index were found significant predictor variables. Calibration of the models improved annual predictions and the validation of the 2021 raster maps with 2022 data produced similar AUC, OA, and kappa values for bilberry yield (0.73, 0.74 and 0.46), but lower for bilberry shrub (0.61, 0.68 and 0.24). A dedicated phone application was developed duri ng the project, which was used both for collecting the field data and for presenting the potential locations of berry yields. Local berry maps can help berry pickers easier to find the berries in forest landscape and therefore support local berry value cha in.     • This chapter asks whether there will be positive or negative impacts on smallholder farmers and rural households as more agricultural land is used for biofuels production. The study uses a computable general equilibrium model to assess the distributive effects and food security implications of biofuels production in Ethiopia. We model the production of jatropha, castor bean, palm oil, and sugarcane as biofuel feedstock crops, with and without the effect of technology spillovers into food cereal crops. We find that the technology spillover effects of certain feedstock crops can increase the production of food cereals (with the effect varying across agro-ecological zones) without increasing cereal prices. In particular, when we model the production of sugarcane as a feedstock, and when we model jatropha and castor bean scenarios with spillover effects, production activities are projected to increase overall agriculture production and food security. When spillover effects are considered, biofuel investment tends to improve the welfare of most rural poor households. Urban households benefit from returns to labor under some scenarios. Thus, for both rural and urban households, biofuels expansion can improve household welfare under some scenarios. These findings assume that continued government investment in roads allows biofuels production to expand on land that is currently unutilized, so that smallholders do not lose land. © 2018 Environment for Development (EfD) Initiative.

  • Using Mutant Stubbornness to Create Minimal and Prioritized Test Sets

    • In testing, engineers want to run the most useful tests early (prioritization). When tests are run hundreds or thousands of times, minimizing a test set can result in significant savings (minimization). This paper proposes a new analysis technique to address both the minimal test set and the test case prioritization problems. This paper precisely defines the concept of mutant stubbornness, which is the basis for our analysis technique. We empirically compare our technique with other test case minimization and prioritization techniques in terms of the size of the minimized test sets and how quickly mutants are killed. We used seven C language subjects from the Siemens Repository, specifically the test sets and the killing matrices from a previous study. We used 30 different orders for each set and ran every technique 100 times over each set. Results show that our analysis technique performed significantly better than prior techniques for creating minimal test sets and was able to establish new bounds for all cases. Also, our analysis technique killed mutants as fast or faster than prior techniques. These results indicate that our mutant stubbornness technique constructs test sets that are both minimal in size, and prioritized effectively, as well or better than other techniques.

    • The brominated cyclodipeptides barettin(cyclo[(6-bromo-8-entryptophan) arginine]) and 8,9-dihydrobarettin ( cyclo[(6-bromotryptophan) arginine]) isolated from the marine sponge Geodia barretti have previously been shown to inhibit settlement of barnacle larvae in a dose-dependent manner in concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 25 mu M. To further establish the molecular target and mode of action of these compounds, we investigated their affinity to human serotonin receptors. The tryptophan residue in the barettins resembles that of endogenous serotonin [5-hydroxytryptamine]. A selection of human serotonin receptors, including representatives from all subfamilies (1-7), were transfected into HEK-293 cells. Barettin selectively interacted with the serotonin receptors 5-HT2A, 5-HT2C, and 5-HT4 at concentrations close to that of endogenous serotonin, with the corresponding K-i values being 1.93, 0.34, and 1.91 mu M, respectively. 8,9-Dihydrobarettin interacted exclusively with the 5-HT2C receptor with a K-i value of 4.63 mu M; it failed to show affinity to 5-HT2A and 5-HT4, indicating that the double bond between the tryptophan and arginine residue plays an important role in the interaction with the receptor proteins.

  • Targeting SAMHD1 with hydroxyurea in first-line cytarabine-based therapy of newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukaemia: Results from the HEAT-AML trial

    • Background Treatment of newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is based on combination chemotherapy with cytarabine (ara-C) and anthracyclines. Five-year overall survival is below 30%, which has partly been attributed to cytarabine resistance. Preclinical data suggest that the addition of hydroxyurea potentiates cytarabine efficacy by increasing ara-C triphosphate (ara-CTP) levels through targeted inhibition of SAMHD1. Objectives In this phase 1 trial, we evaluated the feasibility, safety and efficacy of the addition of hydroxyurea to standard chemotherapy with cytarabine/daunorubicin in newly diagnosed AML patients. Methods Nine patients were enrolled and received at least two courses of ara-C (1 g/m(2)/2 h b.i.d. d1-5, i.e., a total of 10 g/m(2) per course), hydroxyurea (1-2 g d1-5) and daunorubicin (60 mg/m(2) d1-3). The primary endpoint was safety; secondary endpoints were complete remission rate and measurable residual disease (MRD). Additionally, pharmacokinetic studies of ara-CTP and ex vivo drug sensitivity assays were performed. Results The most common grade 3-4 toxicity was febrile neutropenia (100%). No unexpected toxicities were observed. Pharmacokinetic analyses showed a significant increase in median ara-CTP levels (1.5-fold; p = 0.04) in patients receiving doses of 1 g hydroxyurea. Ex vivo, diagnostic leukaemic bone marrow blasts from study patients were significantly sensitised to ara-C by a median factor of 2.1 (p = 0.0047). All nine patients (100%) achieved complete remission, and all eight (100%) with validated MRD measurements (flow cytometry or real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction [RT-qPCR]) had an MRD level <0.1% after two cycles of chemotherapy. Treatment was well-tolerated, and median time to neutrophil recovery >1.0 x 10(9)/L and to platelet recovery >50 x 10(9)/L after the start of cycle 1 was 19 days and 22 days, respectively. Six of nine patients underwent allogeneic haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). With a median follow-up of 18.0 (range 14.9-20.5) months, one patient with adverse risk not fit for HSCT experienced a relapse after 11.9 months but is now in second complete remission. Conclusion Targeted inhibition of SAMHD1 by the addition of hydroxyurea to conventional AML therapy is safe and appears efficacious within the limitations of the small phase 1 patient cohort. These results need to be corroborated in a larger study.

  • Bioinspired coupled helical coils for soft tissue engineering of tubular structures : Improved mechanical behavior of tubular collagen type I templates

    • The design of constructs for tubular tissue engineering is challenging. Most biomaterials need to be reinforced with supporting structures such as knittings, meshes or electrospun material to comply with the mechanical demands of native tissues. In this study, coupled helical coils (CHCs) were manufactured to mimic collagen fiber orientation as found in nature. Monofilaments of different commercially available biodegradable polymers were wound and subsequently fused, resulting in right-handed and left-handed polymer helices fused together in joints where the filaments cross. CHCs of different polymer composition were tested to determine the tensile strength, strain recovery, hysteresis, compressive strength and degradation of CHCs of different composition. Subsequently, seamless and stable hybrid constructs consisting of PDSII (R) USP 2-0 CHCs embedded in porous collagen type I were produced. Compared to collagen alone, this hybrid showed superior strain recovery (93.5 +/- 0.9% vs 71.1 +/- 12.6% in longitudinal direction; 87.1 +/- 6.6% vs 57.2 +/- 4.6% in circumferential direction) and hysteresis (18.9 +/- 2.7% vs 51.1 +/- 12.0% in longitudinal direction; 11.5 +/- 4.6% vs 46.3 +/- 6.3% in circumferential direction). Furthermore, this hybrid construct showed an improved Young's modulus in both longitudinal (0.5 +/- 0.1 MPa vs 0.2 +/- 0.1 MPa; 2.5-fold) and circumferential (1.65 +/- 0.07 MPa vs (2.9 +/- 0.3) x 10(-2) MPa; 57-fold) direction, respectively, compared to templates created from collagen alone. Moreover, hybrid template characteristics could be modified by changing the CHC composition and CHCs were produced showing a mechanical behavior similar to the native ureter. CHC-enforced templates, which are easily tunable to meet different demands may be promising for tubular tissue engineering. Statement of Significance Most tubular constructs lack sufficient strength and tunability to comply with the mechanical demands of native tissues. Therefore, we embedded coupled helical coils (CHCs) produced from biodegradable polymers - to mimic collagen fiber orientation as found in nature - in collagen type I sponges. We show that the mechanical behavior of CHCs is very similar to native tissue and strengths structurally weak tubular constructs. The production procedure is relatively easy, reproducible and mechanical features can be controlled to meet different mechanical demands. This is promising in template manufacture, hence offering new opportunities in tissue engineering of tubular organs and preventing graft failure.

    • Background: Investigations of evolution knowledge and acceptance and their relation are central to evolution education research. Ambiguous results in this field of study demonstrate a variety of measuring issues, for instance differently theorized constructs, or a lack of standardized methods, especially for cross-country comparisons. In particular, meaningful comparisons across European countries, with their varying cultural backgrounds and education systems, are rare, often include only few countries, and lack standardization. To address these deficits, we conducted a standardized European survey, on 9200 first-year university students in 26 European countries utilizing a validated, comprehensive questionnaire, the “Evolution Education Questionnaire”, to assess evolution acceptance and knowledge, as well as influencing factors on evolution acceptance. Results: We found that, despite European countries’ different cultural backgrounds and education systems, European first-year university students generally accept evolution. At the same time, they lack substantial knowledge about it, even if they are enrolled in a biology-related study program. Additionally, we developed a multilevel-model that determines religious faith as the main influencing factor in accepting evolution. According to our model, knowledge about evolution and interest in biological topics also increase acceptance of evolution, but to a much lesser extent than religious faith. The effect of age and sex, as well as the country’s affiliation, students’ denomination, and whether or not a student is enrolled in a biology-related university program, is negligible. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that, despite all their differences, most of the European education systems for upper secondary education lead to acceptance of evolution at least in university students. It appears that, at least in this sample, the differences in knowledge between countries reflect neither the extent to which school curricula cover evolutionary biology nor the percentage of biology-related students in the country samples. Future studies should investigate the role of different European school curricula, identify particularly problematic or underrepresented evolutionary concepts in biology education, and analyze the role of religious faith when teaching evolution.

    • Recently, several, compounds including polyunsaturated fatty acids (linoleic, linolenic, arachidonic), the triflavonoid selligueain and a sulfonoglycolipid (SQDG) have been isolated from the South American fern, Polypodium decumanum using bioactivity directed fractionation. The present study describes the quantitative analysis using HPLC methods of these three classes of compounds in the leaves and rhizomes of the five Polypodium species. Furthermore, extracts of the five ferns are studied in three in vitro bioassays using platelet activating factor (PAF) and leukotriene B-4 (LTB4). The models are the same that previously have led to the isolation of the active principles in Polypodium decumanum. The objective of this study was to investigate if the identified active compounds could be used for standardization of the extracts. Since the SQDG was found to be present in pharmacologically detectable amounts in the crude extracts and since it presents a specific mode of action it is recommended that quantitative analysis of this constituent should be used for future standardization of the extracts.

    • In this paper, which was prepared as part of IEA Bioenergy Task XV (“Greenhouse Gas Balances of Bioenergy Systems”), we outline a standard methodology for comparing the greenhouse gas balances of bioenergy systems with those of fossil energy systems. Emphasis is on a careful definition of system boundaries. The following issues are dealt with in detail: time interval analysed and changes of carbon stocks; reference energy systems; energy inputs required to produce, process and transport fuels; mass and energy losses along the entire fuel chain; energy embodied in facility infrastructure; distribution systems; cogeneration systems; by-products; waste wood and other biomass waste for energy; reference land use; and other environmental issues. For each of these areas recommendations are given on how analyses of greenhouse gas balances should be performed. In some cases we also point out alternative ways of doing the greenhouse gas accounting. Finally, the paper gives some recommendations on how bioenergy systems should be optimized from a greenhouse-gas-emissions point of view.

  • An Iterative Approach for Collision Free Routing and Scheduling in Multirobot Stations

    • This work is inspired by the problem of planning sequences of operations, as welding, in car manufacturing stations where multiple industrial robots cooperate. The goal is to minimize the station cycle time, i.e., the time it takes for the last robot to finish its cycle. This is done by dispatching the tasks among the robots, and by routing and scheduling the robots in a collision-free way, such that they perform all predefined tasks. We propose an iterative and decoupled approach in order to cope with the high complexity of the problem. First, collisions among robots are neglected, leading to a min–max Multiple Generalized Traveling Salesman Problem (MGTSP). Then, when the sets of robot loads have been obtained and fixed, we sequence and schedule their tasks, with the aim to avoid conflicts. The first problem (min–max MGTSP) is solved by an exact branch and bound (B&B) method, where different lower bounds are presented by combining the solutions of a min–max set partitioning problem and of a Generalized Traveling Salesman Problem (GTSP). The second problem is approached by assuming that robots move synchronously: a novel transformation of this synchronous problem into a GTSP is presented. Eventually, in order to provide complete robot solutions, we include path planning functionalities, allowing the robots to avoid collisions with the static environment and among themselves. These steps are iterated until a satisfying solution is obtained. Experimental results are shown for both problems and for their combination. We even show the results of the iterative method, applied to an industrial test case adapted from a stud welding station in a car manufacturing line.

  • Anxiety and depression among women with newly diagnosed vulvar cancer - A nationwide longitudinal study

    • Introduction: Our objective was to investigate the trajectories of anxiety, depression, emotional and social functioning in women with newly diagnosed vulvar cancer from the time of diagnosis to 12 months after treatment. A further aim was to identify risk factors for high levels of anxiety.Material and methods: PROVE (PROspective Vulvar Cancer Evaluation) is a nationwide longitudinal cohort study investigating quality of life in women with newly diagnosed vulvar cancer by the following validated patient-reported outcome measures at diagnosis, and 3 and 12 months after treatment: The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire C30, and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Vulvar module VU34. Mean scores, changes over time and associations were analyzed by generalized estimated equations and log-linear regression models, adjusted for possible confounders.Results: Between 2019 and 2021, 105 (69%) women completed the questionnaires at all three time points. At diagnosis, 42% of the women reported elevated anxiety levels, decreasing significantly to 30% during the first 12 months. Insomnia, persisting vulvar symptoms and high information needs were significantly associated with a high level of anxiety (relative risk [RR] 2.1, 95% CI 1.2-3.7 for insomnia; RR 2.8, 95% CI 1.7-4.6 for vulvar symptoms, RR 2.7, 95% CI 1.5-4.9 for information needs). We found a trend towards a higher level of anxiety in younger women (<65 years: RR 1.5, 95% CI 1.0-2.5). Participants reported a low and stable prevalence of depression (14%) and high social functioning throughout the study period.Conclusions: Women with newly diagnosed vulvar cancer report a high level of anxiety at diagnosis. Despite a significant improvement, anxiety remains widely prevalent during the first year of follow-up. Targeting insomnia, vulvar symptoms and unmet needs may decrease anxiety during surveillance.
