  • Distributed Dynamic Spectrum Access in Multichannel Random Access Networks with Selfish Users
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC), 2010 IEEE. - : IEEE. - 9781424463961 ; , s. 1-6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dynamic spectrum allocation schemes enable users to share spectrum resources by exploiting the variations in spectrum demand over time and space. Performing dynamic spectrum allocation centrally can be prohibitively complex. Therefore distributed schemes in which users can access the available channels independently may be preferable to centralized allocation. However, in distributed dynamic spectrum access, the lack of central coordination makes it difficult to utilize the system resources efficiently. Furthermore, if some or all of the users decide to deviate selfishly from the commonly agreed access procedure, this may have a decisive effect on system performance. In this paper we investigate the effect of incomplete information and selfish behavior on system performance in wireless access systems. We extend previous work by studying a distributed multichannel wireless random access system. Using a game-theoretic approach, we analyze the behavior of users in the selfish system and derive the transmission strategies at the Nash equilibrium. Our results show that lack of information leads to substantial degredation in performance of cooperative systems. We also show that there is a large incentive for selfish behavior in such cooperative systems. Selfish behavior of all users, however, causes further performance degradation, particularly in high load settings.

    • This study models individual characteristics, leader-member exchange, and organizational support in relationship to individual innovativeness in highly complex research and development (R&D) settings. The paper reports on a survey of 166 R&D team members, 43 team leaders, and 10 department managers in five Swedish industrial organizations. Innovative behavior was measured using quantitative indicators (e.g., new patent applications, new products, and scientific and other publications) and team leaders’ ratings. Personal initiative predicted individual innovative behavior, while intrinsic motivation and leadership (conceptualized by leader-member exchange theory) did not. A mediating effect was found where leader-member exchange was associated with innovation through the personal initiative of team members. Organizational support moderated the relationship between leader-member exchange and individuals’ personal initiative. High organizational support strengthened the relationship.

    • Effective and efficient organisation of research and development is critical for firm performance. In this regard the centralisation versus decentralisation of R&D is a key issue that has been debated heavily. The resource-based view argues that R&D activities that are of strategic importance, have a wide applicability within the firms, or are potentially disruptive should be under tighter corporate control. However, while previous research has redominantly focused on product innovation, often equating R&D with the development of new products, this study examines the centralisation-decentralisation issue from a product, as well as a process innovation perspective. In this regard, case studies of three multinational companies, representing food and beverage, mining and minerals, and pulp and paper industry sectors advances the understanding of organising intrafirm R&D. The study reveals dual structures within the R&D organisation; one for product innovation and one for process innovation. A matrix consisting of product-process innovation on one axis and centralisation-decentralisation on the other is presented to illustrate nine forms in which the intrafirm R&D organisation can be configured. Depending on the objective of product and process innovation the R&D organisation should be either centralised or decentralised. Thus, by examining intrafirm centralisation-decentralisation in R&D organisations through a product and process innovation perspective this study opens up the R&D organisation and provide guidelines for organising intrafirm R&D.

    • Drawing upon recent literature, which employs social networks in the field of project management, the aim of this research is to empirically investigate the importance of projects’ social capital for knowledge development in R&D projects. Primary data were collected via sociometric questionnaires on a population of 53 biotech R&D projects located at one of the most important science parks in Sweden. The analysis focused on the distinctive structural configuration of projects’ social capital, among which the roles of network diversity were emphasized. Our results suggest that certain structural configurations of project social capital maximize the level of effectiveness in knowledge development. More specifically, we found an inverted U-shaped relationship between projects’ network diversity and their level of knowledge development, demonstrating that intermediate levels of diversity maximize project knowledge development. Implications for innovation managers and policymakers are discussed.

    • Since many years in Swedish national research project and Swedish-Chinese research framework we have carried out advanced ceramic fuel cell research and development, targeting for intermediate and low temperature ceramic or solid oxide fuel cells (ILTCFCs or ILTSOFCs, 300-700°C) based on ceramic-based composite materials. The ceramic composite material developments in Sweden have been experienced from the oxyacid-salts oxide proton-based conductors, non-oxide containment salts, the ceria-based composite electrolytes and nano-composites. Among them the ceria-based composites showed excellent ionic conductivity of 0.01 to 1 Scm-1 and ILTCFCs using these composites as electrolytes have achieved high performances of 200 to 1000 mWcm-2 at temperatures between 400 and 700°C. The excellent ion conduction was resulted from hybrid proton and oxygen ion conduction. The hybrid ion conduction and dual electrode reactions and processes create a new fuel cell system. Advanced ceramic fuel cell aims at developing a new generation to realize the challenges for fuel cell commercialization. This paper reviews our more than 14 years R&D on the field with emphasis on the recent progresses and achievements.

    • Information problems and lack of collateral value should make R&D more susceptible to financing frictions than other investments, yet existing evidence on whether financing constraints limit R&D is decidedly mixed, particularly in the studies of non-U.S. firms. We study a large sample of European firms and also find little evidence of binding finance constraints when we estimate standard investment-cash flow regressions. However, we find strong evidence that the availability of finance matters for R&D once we directly control for: (i) firm efforts to smooth R&D with cash reserves and (ii) firm use of external equity finance. Our study provides a framework for evaluating financing constraints when firms rely extensively on external finance and endogenously manage buffer stocks of liquidity to keep investment smooth, and our findings show that controlling for this smoothing behavior is critical for uncovering the full effect of financing constraints. Our findings also indicate a major role for external equity in financing R&D, highlighting a causal channel through which stock market development and liberalization can promote economic growth by increasing firm-level innovative activity.

    • Reliable data with less variation play a key role for acceptance of the usefulness of the measurement output of a wheel profile measurement system (WPMS) in a railway network. However, in practice, most studies are carried out without checking the reliability of data from such a system, which may lead to inappropriate maintenance strategies. To ensure the measurement capability of WPMS and to support robust maintenance in railway systems, this study has evaluated measurement data for the flange height, flange thickness, flange slope, and tread hollowing of rolling stock wheels by using gauge repeatability and reproducibility (GR&R). In this study, acceptance and rejection criteria for the precision-to-tolerance ratio (PTR), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and discrimination ratio (DR) have been employed to evaluate the measurement capabilities. For the purpose of illustration, we have implemented a new proposed approach. This approach involves both an analysis using graphs with four regions with a confidence interval (CI) of 95% and an analysis using a graph with three regions with only the predicted values; the latter type of graph represents an innovation made in this study. The results show that the measurements of the tread hollowing and flange slope are on an acceptable level, while those for the flange height and flange thickness have to be rejected as unacceptable. The action proposed to increase the quality of data on the flange height and flange thickness is to enhance the calibration of the WPMS. In conclusion, GR&R is a useful tool to evaluate the measurement capability of WPMS and to provide helpful support for maintenance decision making.

    • To be in the frontier in highly competitive and capital intensive businesses collaborative R&D-projects between companies and their customers have become important. Such projects expect to bring forth competitive advantages. However, previous studies indicate that there are difficulties in managing and evaluating collaborative R&D-projects. Therefore, the purpose with the paper is to increase the understanding about management and evaluations of values in collaborative R&D-projects. The present paper addresses the following questions: 1. How are collaborative R&D-projects managed? 2. What values are generated through the exchange between the companies? 3. How are collaborative R&D-projects evaluated? In this paper, we have conducted an exploratory single case study in the process industry, on a big Swedish company and one of their customers. The empirical findings are based on interviews, internal documents and publicly available information. Inductive patterns identified in the empirical material led to further analyses from the theoretical perspectives of Customer relationship management (CRM), Social exchange theory (SET) and Intellectual capital (IC).Findings from the study indicate that the company's strategy for creating competitive advantages is to build up-on long-term customer relationships through the collaborative R&D-projects. Management of, exchange of and values created through relationship are central for such a strategy. The careful management of customers is in accordance with the theory of CRM. The company's focus on long-term relationships tended to influence the exchange in the R&D-project. T he outcome of the project was negative, a failure. When evaluating the project focus was on measuring soft values instead of the hard values based on the negative output. The social exchange, central for the company's management of the customer relationship that generated values in form of a relational capital, seemed more important than the economic exchange. The concluding remarks of this paper lead to a paradox. Companies' long-term strategy of building relational capital for ensuring economic values tends to result in the neglecting of measuring hard economic values. This may in the long-run damage the customer relationship since the main purpose with the collaborative R&D-project is to generate competitive advantages in terms of economic values.
