  • The ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 3:S08002
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is a general-purpose, heavy-ion detector at the CERN LHC which focuses on QCD, the strong-interaction sector of the Standard Model. It is designed to address the physics of strongly interacting matter and the quark-gluon plasma at extreme values of energy density and temperature in nucleus-nucleus collisions. Besides running with Pb ions, the physics programme includes collisions with lighter ions, lower energy running and dedicated proton-nucleus runs. ALICE will also take data with proton beams at the top LHC energy to collect reference data for the heavy-ion programme and to address several QCD topics for which ALICE is complementary to the other LHC detectors. The ALICE detector has been built by a collaboration including currently over 1000 physicists and engineers from 105 Institutes in 30 countries, Its overall dimensions are 16 x 16 x 26 m(3) with a total weight of approximately 10 000 t. The experiment consists of 18 different detector systems each with its own specific technology choice and design constraints, driven both by the physics requirements and the experimental conditions expected at LHC. The most stringent design constraint is to cope with the extreme particle multiplicity anticipated in central Pb-Pb collisions. The different subsystems were optimized to provide high-momentum resolution as well as excellent Particle Identification (PID) over a broad range in momentum, up to the highest multiplicities predicted for LHC. This will allow for comprehensive studies of hadrons, electrons, muons, and photons produced in the collision of heavy nuclei. Most detector systems are scheduled to be installed and ready for data taking by mid-2008 when the LHC is scheduled to start operation, with the exception of parts of the Photon Spectrometer (PHOS), Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) and Electro Magnetic Calorimeter (EMCal). These detectors will be completed for the high-luminosity ion run expected in 2010. This paper describes in detail the detector components as installed for the first data taking in the summer of 2008.

  • Status of the ESS elliptical cryomodules at CEA saclay
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2017 - Proceedings of the 8th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501823 ; , s. 945-947
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first ESS prototype cryomodule with medium beta cavities named M-ECCTD is being assembled at CEA Saclay. The Q curves of the 4 cavities mounted inside the cryomodule are presented, and the four power couplers have been conditioned at high power before their assembly onto the cavity string. Completion of the M-ECCTD assembly outside clean room is in progress as well as the finalization of the RF power test stand preparation. RF power tests of the M-ECCTD will be performed during summer 2017. CEA is preparing the production of the ESS medium and high beta cryomodules of the series before the test of the M-ECCTD and the contracts for the procurement of the most critical components have already been signed.

  • Bimolecular recombination in ambipolar organic field effect transistors
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Organic electronics. - : Elsevier. - 1566-1199 .- 1878-5530. ; 10:5, s. 994-997
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In ambipolar organic field effect transistors (OFET) the shape of the channel potential is intimately related to the recombination zone width W, and hence to the electron-hole recombination strength. Experimentally, the recombination profile can be assessed by scanning Kelvin probe microscopy (SKPM). However, surface potentials as measured by SKPM are distorted due to spurious capacitive couplings. Here, we present a (de)convolution method with an experimentally calibrated transfer function to reconstruct the actual surface potential from a measured SKPM response and vice versa. Using this scheme, we find W = 0.5 mu m for a nickel dithiolene OFET, which translates into a recombination rate that is two orders of magnitude below the value expected for Langevin recombination. • Variation in Size and Growth of the Great Scallop Pecten maximus along a Latitudinal Gradient
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Plos One. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 7:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the relationship between growth and temperature will aid in the evaluation of thermal stress and threats to ectotherms in the context of anticipated climate changes. Most Pecten maximus scallops living at high latitudes in the northern hemisphere have a larger maximum body size than individuals further south, a common pattern among many ectotherms. We investigated differences in daily shell growth among scallop populations along the Northeast Atlantic coast from Spain to Norway. This study design allowed us to address precisely whether the asymptotic size observed along a latitudinal gradient, mainly defined by a temperature gradient, results from differences in annual or daily growth rates, or a difference in the length of the growing season. We found that low annual growth rates in northern populations are not due to low daily growth values, but to the smaller number of days available each year to achieve growth compared to the south. We documented a decrease in the annual number of growth days with age regardless of latitude. However, despite initially lower annual growth performances in terms of growing season length and growth rate, differences in asymptotic size as a function of latitude resulted from persistent annual growth performances in the north and sharp declines in the south. Our measurements of daily growth rates throughout life in a long-lived ectothermic species provide new insight into spatio-temporal variations in growth dynamics and growing season length that cannot be accounted for by classical growth models that only address asymptotic size and annual growth rate.

  • On the width of the recombination zone in ambipolar organic field effect transistors
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 93:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The performance of organic light emitting field effect transistors is strongly influenced by the width of the recombination zone. We present an analytical model for the recombination profile. By assuming Langevin recombination, the recombination zone width W is found to be given by W = root 4.34d delta, with d and delta the gate dielectric and accumulation layer thicknesses, respectively. The model compares favorably to both numerical calculations and measured surface potential profiles of an actual ambipolar device. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

  • Multiplex PCR sets of novel microsatellite loci for the great scallop Pecten maximus and their application in parentage assignment
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Aquatic Living Resources. - : EDP Sciences. - 0990-7440 .- 1765-2952. ; 26:3, s. 207-213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the isolation, development and multiplex optimisation of 12 new microsatellite loci for the great scallop, Pecten maximus. Diversity was moderate to high, with number of alleles ranging from 4 to 20 and observed heterozygosity between 0.28 and 0.88. Progeny produced in a commercial hatchery was used to test locus power for parentage assignment. The percentage of offspring that was unambiguously assigned to a unique pair of parents was 97% (software package CERVUS-COLONY). Parentage assignment revealed that 22% of the studied progeny resulted from unplanned crosses. Effective population size of the study progeny was also estimated. Our study illustrates the power of microsatellites for the genetic monitoring of hatchery-produced great scallops.
