  • Brödraskap och homosocialitet : ett vardande till hälsa
  • 2023
  • In: Makten och frimurarna. - Uppsala : Forskningslogen Carl Friedrich Eckleff. - 9789152750834 ; , s. 92-99
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • 2023
  • In: Högre Utbildning. - Oslo : Cappelen Damm Akademisk. - 2000-7558. ; 13:2, s. 56-62
  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Patient experiences and the influence on health literacy and self-care using mHealth to manage symptoms during radiotherapy for prostate cancer
  • 2019
  • Licentiate thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Introduction: Prostate cancer is a diagnosis that can affect the men’s quality of life both due to the symptoms related to the disease and the treatment the men receive. Treatment with radiotherapy for prostate cancer in Sweden takes place at outpatient clinics, where the patient visits daily for radiotherapy and then returns home. Most of the time the patient is experiencing the symptoms and side-effects at home without health-care professionals easily accessible. To facilitate person-centered care and improve clinical management when hospital care is moving to outpatient care, the app (Interaktor) for smartphones and tablets was developed. Using patient-reported outcomes (PRO), the app was intended to identify symptoms early, assess them in real time, and provide symptom-management support during radiotherapy for prostate cancer.   Aims: The overall objective of the intervention described in this thesis, was to facilitate symptom management for patients with prostate cancer assisted with an interactive app during radiotherapy treatment. Methods:  The two studies included in this thesis come from one trial. A descriptive investigation evaluated the intervention group’s use and perception of the using the app, and a quasi-experimental investigation compared those using the app with a historical control group not using the app to evaluate the effect on health literacy and self-care agency. The patients (n=130) were recruited consecutively from two university hospitals in Sweden between April 2012 and October 2013. The intervention group (n=66) had access to the app during 5-7 weeks of radiotherapy and three additional weeks. The intervention group’s use of the app was logged. Health literacy was measured  using the Swedish Functional Health Literacy Scale (FHL) and the Swedish Communicative and Critical Health Literacy Scale (CCHL), and the Appraisal of Self-care Agency scale, version A (patient’s assessment) (ASA-A) for self-care agency. Transcribed notes from phone or face-to-face interviews about participants’ experiences of using and reporting in the app were analyzed. Results: In the intervention group using the app, adherence to daily reports was 87% (Md 92%, 16-100%), and generated 3,536 reports. All listed symptoms were used, where the most common being: urinary urgency, fatigue, hot flushes, and difficulties in urinating. A total of 1,566 alerts were generated, with 1/3 being severe (red alert). The app was reported in the interviews as easy to use, the reporting became routine; to report facilitated reflection over symptoms, the symptoms were relevant although some found that nuancing severity was hard. Using the app was reported as providing a sense of security. Substantial portions of the participants showed inadequate FHL and CCHL at baseline for both groups. CCHL changed significantly for the intervention group from baseline to three months after ended treatment (p = 0.050). Functional health literacy and self-care agency did not reveal any statistically significant differences over time for either group. Conclusions: The conclusions to draw from this thesis are that an mHealth intervention, the app Interaktor, served as a supportive tool for the patients to assess and manage symptoms during the radiotherapy for prostate cancer. The intervention provided the patients with a sense of safety, increased awareness of own well-being and a significant improvement in communicative and critical health literacy was found. The portions of inadequate levels of health literacy reported leave substantial groups of patients more vulnerable in assessing and managing symptoms when treated with radiotherapy for prostate cancer. Although health literacy levels include notable portions of patients in this study that have inadequate levels of both functional and communicative and critical health literacy, the adherence of using the app was high.

  • Reclaiming Sexual health : Unscripted sexual practices of men having sex with men after prostate cancer treatment as ways to comfort and wellbeing in everyday life
  • 2022
  • In: Caring in a changing world. ; , s. 34-34
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background: Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in men. Treatments affect the body and sexuality. Men having sex with men (MSM) report a more substantial influence on sexuality and quality of life.Aim: The purpose of the study was to describe the sexual health of MSM after prostate cancer treatment. Methods: Semi-structured interviews related to symptoms and issues and the help received. Interviews were analyzed using content analysis. Results: The following themes emerged during the analysis: Predominant heteronormative care, Unscripted sexualities, A window of peer support system emerged. The men described how their sexuality had been affected and hampered by their treatments with bodily changes and less pleasure. However, they also described the benefit of being MSM, accustomed to exploring new ways of expressing and exploring their sexualities due to a lack of sexual scripts. The treatment provided a new reason to explore new sexualities and sexual practices. In contacts with urology and oncology departments, they described a heteronormative environment. Albeit same-sex partners could be asked for in intake notes, no one reflected on what non-penovaginal sexuality could look like. Instead, their friends and ability to find alternative ways to valid information became important. Conclusion: The result shows that predominantly heteronormative care exists for MSM where they had to rely on their MSM peers and explore new sexual scripts.Caring in a changing world: MSM described well-meaning care but heteronormative. The men described being MSM as something that had made them explore unscripted sexual practices and had given them a broader sexual repertoire that was helpful for their sexual health. More information on sexual health is needed for healthcare personnel to care for MSM in different life situations.

  • The Graying Rainbow : Tracing LGBTQI Aging in Scandinavian Literature
  • 2023
  • In: Innovation in Aging. - : Folkhälsomyndigheten; Åbo Akademi. ; , s. 766-766
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background: There have been several international reviews about aging LGBTQI health and living conditions, but where policy, social insurance, and services differ. The Public Health Agency of Sweden was given a government assignment to review the literature on LGBTI, emphasizing Scandinavian literature.Method: This scoping review includes peer-reviewed literature published in English or Scandinavian languages from January 1, 2012, to May 2022. Literature was searched in PsycINFO, PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS), Social Science Database, Applied Social Sciences Index & Abstracts (ASSIA), and Sociological Abstracts, Sociology Database. Initially, 11,428 articles were found. After removing duplicates using Rayyan and reviewing titles and abstracts, 54 articles were read in full. After the final review, 16 articles remained. Thematic analysis was used to produce themes from the reviewed literature.Findings: The following two themes were identified: Aspects of health and Living conditions. Studies were primarily interpretive. There is a lack of studies about some subgroups of older LGBTQ people in this context; for instance, there are insufficient studies on older lesbian women and gay men. Furthermore, there is a lack of studies on somatic health for older LGBTQ people, generally. Comparatively, albeit in small samples, we better understand trans descriptions of aging than lesbian women and gay men. There were no studies found on intersex individuals.Implications: There remains a paucity of literature regarding the life and living conditions for LGBTQI older adults in Nordic countries.

  • Unscripted sexual practices : Sexual health of men having sex with men after prostate cancer treatment
  • 2022
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to describe the sexual health of men having sex with men after prostate cancer treatment. Methods: A snowball sampling was conducted via clinicians and gatekeepers to the community. After consenting to participate, a semi-structured interview was conducted based on a questionnaire related to symptoms and issues and the help asked for and received. The interviews were approximately one hour and took place via digital platforms. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and then analyzed using content analysis. The following themes emerged during the analysis: A predominant heteronormative care, A situation of suffering and possibilities, A window of peer support system emerged. Results: The men described how their sexuality had been severely affected by their treatments. Bodily changes with decreased penis size, difficulties maintaining an erection, and less pleasure from anal sex. However, they also described the benefit of being men who had sex with men. They described being accustomed to exploring new ways of expressing and exploring their sexualities due to a lack of sexual scripts. The prostate cancer treatment had given them a new reason to explore new sexualities and sexual practices. In contacts with urology and oncology departments, both physicians and nurses, the men described a heteronormative environment. Albeit same-sex partners could be asked for in intake notes, no one reflected on what non-penovaginal sexuality could look like. Therefore, getting the appropriate care for the men after prostate cancer treatment did not involve erectile dysfunction medications was challenging. Instead, their friends and ability to find alternative ways to valid information became important. Conclusion: The result shows that predominantly heteronormative care exists for men who have sex with men. The new insight of the treatment is regarded as a situation of suffering and new possibilities. To conclude, men who have sex with men describe care that was well-meaning but heteronormative. The men described being men having sex with men as something that had made them explore unscripted sexual practices and had given them a broader sexual repertoire that was helpful for their sexual health. Furthermore, the support they received emerged from a peer support system in their private life.

  • When the rainbow greys : Issues in ageing as an LGBT person
  • 2019
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • For the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals, many societal changes have happened that have increased their visibility and rights. These individuals will face many of the issues faced by heterosexual older adults, but also additional ones specific for the LGBT groups. For the older transgender person, the ability to transition may be crucial to some but may face challenges related to health problems. Furthermore, there are issues related to personal care as a non-transitioned individual. The HIV epidemic hit the gay community, disproportionally more, and have still great ramifications. The chosen families of LGBT people may be invisible to nurses, and they may not be legally binding. Many fears and concerns LGBT older adults have can be alleviated by person-centered care when nurses treat them with dignity and compassion.

  • Growing up in the shadow of HIV : post-AIDS generation of HIV-negative men who have sex with men in Sweden and their perceptions of HIV and stigma.
  • 2024
  • In: Culture, Health and Sexuality. - 1369-1058 .- 1464-5351. ; , s. 1-15
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Despite growing understanding and acceptance of the concept of Undetectable = Untransmittable (U = U) among gay men, HIV stigma remains a burden for people living with HIV. This study explored perceptions of HIV among HIV seronegative gay men in Sweden in this new context. Using snowball sampling, 15 gay men born between 1980 and 2000 were recruited to the study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and data were subjected to reflexive thematic analysis. Men grew up experiencing gay stigma and were repeatedly informed by parents, schools, communities, peers, and popular culture about the dangers of HIV, and that gay men were a high-risk group. As men grew older, and the premise of HIV shifted dramatically due to U = U, some remained emotionally anchored to the pre-U = U era, while others realigned their perceptions, often after a process of reconciling emotional responses (e.g. HIV = death) with the logical-rational claims made about U = U. The study highlights key areas for future efforts, namely establishing a balance between HIV education strategies and stigma reduction initiatives. Study findings underscore the need to care for the memory of those lost during the crisis years, while also addressing the stigma faced by those currently living with HIV.

  • Sigma European international PhD virtual connect event : fostering a community of practice
  • 2024
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background: Virtual scholarly events have become commonplace in contemporary nursing education. The Sigma European regional PhD Virtual Connect is such an event, which has increasingly been informed by the Theory of Communities of Practice (CoP). The theory of CoP proposes that learning occurs inevitably from our participation in the world (Wenger, 2010b). A CoP can be defined as a group of people with shared interests and motivation who engage in the process of joined learning with and from each other, and who do better due to the group's sustained interaction (Wenger, 2010b). A CoP can therefore take the form of a learning network, which in the context of the current study is a virtual scholarly event. The aim of this study was to explore the perception of PhD candidates about their participation in this event.Method: An open-ended qualitative survey was conducted with the participants from the PhD Virtual Connect event. Data were analysed through thematic analysis. Results: Twelve participants from various countries answered the online survey anonymously. Four themes were identified: 1) “connectedness with peers and sharing expertise”, 2) “developing ourselves as nursing researchers”, 3) “a learning ecosystem that expands horizons”, 4) “leadership and engagement”.Conclusion: The results reflect the good experience of participants and reveal the alignment of the pedagogical structure with the CoP theory.
