  • Shifting Strategies between Generations in Sami Reindeer Husbandry : the Challenges of Maintaining Traditions while Adapting to a Changing Context
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Human Ecology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0300-7839 .- 1572-9915. ; 48, s. 481-490
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many traditional pastoralist systems are greatly impacted by cumulative encroachments of other land users and by climate change. Understanding land degradation and the adaptive capacity of people who are dependent on the rangelands is an urgent priority for many areas in the world. In this research we explore how changing environmental conditions affect herding strategies on winter pastures and the role of indigenous and local traditional knowledge (ILK) in Sami reindeer husbandry. Our results indicate that traditional Sami reindeer herding strategies are still practiced, but that rapidly changing environmental circumstances are forcing herders into uncharted territories where these traditional strategies and the transmission of knowledge between generations may be of limited use. For example, rotational grazing is no longer possible as all pastures are being used, and changes in climate result in unpredictable weather patterns unknown to earlier generations.

  • Tradition and transformation in Sámi animal-offering practices
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Antiquity. - : Antiquity Publications. - 0003-598X .- 1745-1744. ; 92:362, s. 472-489
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Archaeological evidence for ritual animal offerings is key to understanding the formation and evolution of indigenous Sámi identity in Northern Fennoscandia from the Iron Age to the seventeenth century AD. An examination of such evidence can illuminate how major changes, such as the shift from hunting to reindeer pastoralism, colonialism by emerging state powers and Christianisation, were mediated by the Sámi at the local level. To explore the chronology of, and local variations in, Sámi animal-offering tradition, we provide a synthesis of archaeozoological data and radiocarbon dates from 17 offering sites across Norway, Sweden and Finland. Analysis reveals new patterns in the history of Sámi religious ritual and the expression of Sámi identity.

  • Indigenous Political Journalism in the Norwegian and Swedish Public Service Broadcasters
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journalism Studies. - 1461-670X .- 1469-9699. ; 20:7, s. 991-1008
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Across the world, Indigenous peoples are reclaiming their cultural and political identities, after having suffered decades of assimilation, repression and marginalisation. A major tool in this process is Indigenous journalism, which allows for storytelling and news reporting from the inside, as opposed to being a marginalised group that is only reported about from the outside. This article presents a comparative analysis of Indigenous political journalism as practised in the Norwegian and Swedish public broadcasters. The article explains the differences between the practices of NRK Sapmi and SR Sameradion & SVT Sapmi regarding their reporting on the campaign leading up to the Samediggi elections in Norway and Sweden in 2013. The analysis shows that Sami journalists on both sides of the border adhere to commonly shared characteristics of Indigenous journalism practices, but with considerable variation between them. There are two main conclusions of the analysis. First, NRK Sapmi and SR Sameradion & SVT Sapmi indeed practise Indigenous journalism, but do so differently, and second, ethnic identity counts, but institutions decide. Sami journalism is constrained not only by national borders but also by the institutional framework of the parent company, the public service remits and the resources available to them.
