  • Connecting the Case Studies : Editorial Methods and the Editorial Circle Model
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: The Arts of Editing Medieval Greek and Latin : a Casebook - a Casebook. - 0082-5328. - 9780888442031 ; 203, s. 400-429
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concluding study offers reflections and a synthetic analysis of all the studies in the casebook, presented from the perspective of a "first reader". The pattern of external factors, editorial challenges, methodologies and forms of presentation is discussed. It offers an interpretation of how the body of case studies manifest a wide spectrum of methodologies. The case studies are categorized through two suggested models, one expressed as a map of varieties of editions produced using different methods and approaches; the other as a hermeneutic editorial circle revolving around four interrelated factors every editor has to take into consideration. The map sets out to clarify the editorial task, while the editorial circle problematizes it by bringing into the equation experiential parameters often omitted in theoretical discussions.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a seminar room at LUX, one of the buildings of the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology, a group of PhD students and senior scholars are in deep concentration in front of their computers. It is pin-drop silent in the room until the alarm goes off and everyone starts moving and talking. This is the writing group, an informal and voluntary way of working together in time slots with 45 minutes of writing and a 15-minute break each hour. This collegial way of structuring the day and working together is gaining interest and the group is growing. This article describes the experiences of group participants and, with the aid of theoretical perspectives on collegiality and social learning, explains the benefits of this group for individual scholars as well as for their working environment.

  • The myxoid/round cell liposarcoma fusion oncogene FUS-DDIT3 and the normal DDIT3 induce a liposarcoma phenotype in transfected human fibrosarcoma cells.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: The American journal of pathology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0002-9440 .- 1525-2191. ; 168:5, s. 1642-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Myxoid/round cell liposarcoma (MLS/RCLS) is the most common subtype of liposarcoma. Most MLS/RCLS carry a t(12;16) translocation, resulting in a FUS-DDIT3 fusion gene. We investigated the role of the FUS-DDIT3 fusion in the development of MLS/RCLS in FUS-DDIT3- and DDIT3-transfected human HT1080 sarcoma cells. Cells expressing FUS-DDIT3 and DDIT3 grew as liposarcomas in severe combined immunodeficient mice and exhibited a capillary network morphology that was similar to networks of MLS/RCLS. Microarray-based comparison of HT1080, the transfected cells, and an MLS/RCLS-derived cell line showed that the FUS-DDIT3- and DDIT3-transfected variants shifted toward an MLS/RCLS-like expression pattern. DDIT3-transfected cells responded in vitro to adipogenic factors by accumulation of fat and transformation to a lipoblast-like morphology. In conclusion, because the fusion oncogene FUS-DDIT3 and the normal DDIT3 induce a liposarcoma phenotype when expressed in a primitive sarcoma cell line, MLS/RCLS may develop from cell types other than preadipocytes. This may explain the preferential occurrence of MLS/RCLS in nonadipose tissues. In addition, development of lipoblasts and the typical MLS/RCLS capillary network could be an effect of the DDIT3 transcription factor partner of the fusion oncogene.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Svenskt patristiskt bibliotek : Asketer och munkar - Asketer och munkar. - 9789175803890 ; V, s. 159-179

  • Digital humanities in Sweden and its infrastructure : Status quo and the sine qua non
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Digital Scholarship in the Humanities. - Oxford : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2055-7671 .- 2055-768X. ; 35:3, s. 547-556
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article offers a state-of-the-art overview of a number of Digital Humanities (DH) initiatives that have emerged in Sweden over the past decade. We identify two major developments that seem to be taking place within DH, with a specific focus on the infrastructural aspects of the development: (1) a strive to open up and broaden the research output and (2) multi-disciplinary collaboration and its effects. The two major components accentuate the new infrastructural patterns that are developing and the challenges these infer on universities. While current research is at large multi-disciplinary, developing infrastructures also enable the move towards post-disciplinarity, bringing the universities closer to the surrounding society. At five universities in Sweden, individual-sited infrastructures supporting DH research have been built today. They are complemented by national and international infrastructures, thus supporting developments and tackling some of the major challenges. In the article, the relations between individual disciplines, the question of multi- and post-disciplinarity, and the field of Digital Humanities are discussed, while stressing the factors necessary—sine qua non—for a fruitful development of the scholarly infrastructures.

  • Improved distance measures for “mixed-content miscellanies" : an adaptation for the collections of sayings of the desert fathers and mothers
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Digital Scholarship in the Humanities. - : Oxford University Press. - 2055-7671 .- 2055-768X. ; 38:1, s. 127-150
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Collections of sayings of the desert fathers and mothers are extant in manuscripts in many languages and are organized differently. They are ‘fixed-content miscellanies’ (FCM): they include material that belongs to the same genre, but is variable both when it comes to appearance and order. Distance measurement methods are particularly suitable for large text traditions including variable content in the so-called mixed-content miscellanies, such as recipes, anthological compilations of shorter text passages, or catalogues, but can also be suitable for text genres like collections of sayings, that are equally variable in appearance and order of sayings, even though the genre is fixed; hence ‘fixed-content miscellanies’. In the article, collections of sayings in seven languages were compared using four distance measures methods. Each segment of the sayings was given a unique id to be comparable. The first method used, the Jaccard distance measure, disregards the linear order of items and instead considers each collection compared only as a ‘bag of stories’. In two other methods used (Birnbaum and Levenshtein methods), the order in which the narratives of each saying appear is compared. All three methods yielded interesting results, but the collections that were apparently closely related were clustered together so tightly that it was not possible to make more nuanced analyses. In order to remove false negatives, particulars concerning lacunes in the material were taken into account in the proposed modified Levenshtein method, the fixed-content miscellanies (FCM)-Levenshtein method. By applying the FCM-Levenshtein method, previously unknown relations between collections witnessed in different languages could be detected.

  • 2000

  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • "In what language would one polyglot praise another? Multilingualism and linguistic patriotism in the light of a letter and a poem from Magnus Gabriel Block to Sophia Elisabeth Brenner." In the late 17th and the early 18th centuries, there was a dialectic relation between the increasing national concern for the native language on one hand, and the international multilingual culture where Latin was still predominant on the other. At this time a Swedish writer of occasional poetry, Mrs. Sophia Elisabeth Brenner (1659-1730), received a poem and a letter from another Swede, Dr. Magnus Gabriel Block (1669-1722). In his poem and letter, Block honours Sophia Brenner for clearly expressing her wish to write poems in her mother tongue. However, he does not stop there. Writing this poem in Latin and his letter in Italian and referring to Mr. Brenner's knowledge of other languages as well, Block recognises and honours her as a member of the international respublica literaria. Even though Mrs. Brenner corresponded with learned men in Latin and other languages, she still proclaimed her concern for the develpment of the native language. Thus, she was able to participate as a femina docta both in the national debate and in the international one, being recognised as such more or less universally.

  • Letters of a Learned Lady : Sophia Elisabeth Brenner's Correspondence, with an Edition of her Letters to and from Otto Sperling the Younger
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Sophia Elisabeth Brenner (1659-1730) was Sweden's first great female poet, writing and publishing her poems over a period of fifty years. She was also, however, a prolific letter writer. The dissertation is based on an inventory of all the preserved letters to and from her written in Latin, Swedish, French and Italian. Her Neo-Latin correspondence with the Dane Otto Sperling the Younger is presented in a critical edition with English translation and commentary. The other preserved letters are presented in English summaries. In her letters, Sophia Elisabeth Brenner appears to be very conscious of her role and clear about her ambitions. Brenner's correspondence provides evidence that she was indeed a professional author in the sense that she wrote on commission and was normally paid a certain amount of money for her poems. Through Brenner's correspondence, her professional life, her network and "marketing" strategies are presented. Moreover, her role as a linguistic patriot (one who intentionally contributes to the development of the native language, in this case Swedish) is highlighted. Further, the letters are discussed in their literary and social context, in particular the correspondence with Otto Sperling the Younger. This particular correspondence documents the contact between a learned man and a learned woman in Scandinavia in the early 18th century. It lasted for twelve years and comprises twenty-six letters. Literary models for the correspondence are taken up as well as the view on woman revealed in these letters. The stylistical and syntactical particuliarities in these specimina of Neo-Latin Latin are analyzed.

    • The text of the Skara Missal Compared to Other Liturgical Sources. A large number of printed sources have been consulted and compared with Skara Missal on a quntitative as well as qualitative basis; individual characteristics as well as the evident concordance with many identical readings have been noted and compiled. On the basis of comparisons of various paryers and prefaces it may first of all be concluded that the Skara Missal is related to a group of sacramentaries called by Klaus Gamber "Das stadtrömische "Sacramentarium mixtum" des 7/8 Jahrhunderts (T-Typus). These sacramentaries were based on the Gregorianum but also included other, Gelasian traits. The prefaces can for instance be traced back to an old collection of Gelasian prefaces. Certain special variants indicated that the model of the sacramentary section of the Skara Missal may have come from Corbie/St. Amand. Further, several distinctive common traits in the melodic material have been noted as being similar to those of the Winchester Missal (HBS 93), written in the latter half of the 11th century. These variants make it plausible that the Skara and the Winchester Missal respectively may have had the same antiphonary/gradual as a model. The Skara Missal is in all probability a compilation, just as the Winchester Missal, which means that it belongs to the first generation of complete missals. The Skara Missal, then, is most likely a compilation of a gradual from Corbie, also used for the compilation of the Winchester Missal, and a sacramentary of the T-type, probably originating from Saint-Amand.

Volume 21: Hagiographica; Ascetica; Martyria.. - 9789042947764 - 9789042947771 ; 124, s. 75-89
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sayings of the Desert Fathers had an important role in the monastic education and were very widespread. Originally written down in Greek, they were soon translated into all the main languages in the medieval Europe, and underwent transformations as they were copied. The sayings were organized in different ways, mainly alphabetically or according to themes, and as they were copied the repertoire was also changed in some way. In Latin mainly the systematically organized type of collections were translated from Greek. To this day, we lack a modern critical edition of the most widespread and important of the translated collections: the big systematical collection first translated into Latin by two Roman clerics, Pelagius and Johannes, in the middle of the 6th century. How should the scholar best proceed when deciding upon the best way to study, and possibly also edit this widespread collection, extant in hundreds of manuscripts? What options are there? In the present article, the results from a preliminary investigation of ten manuscripts containing the PJ collection are discussed. The manuscripts were chosen from the tentative groups of manuscripts made by Columba M. Batlle who published a catalogue of the contents of all manuscripts known to him containing this collection. A method for establishing the text to be edited is presented based on the collations made of four chapters of the PJ collection in the selected manuscripts.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Digital and Analytical Approaches to the Written Heritage : Proceedings of the 7th international conference El'Manuscript "Heritage and Information Technologies", 2018 - Proceedings of the 7th international conference El'Manuscript "Heritage and Information Technologies", 2018. ; , s. 79-96
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the article the question of how to identify and define lacunae is discussed, both in general and exemplified in manuscripts containing collections of monastic sayings of the Desert Fathers. These sayings, organized in different ways, were probably written down in Greek during the early fifth century and were soon translated into many languages. In a relational MySQL database, the sayings as they appear in the manuscripts are given a unique identifier. The structure and the contents of each manuscript can be compared through this reference system, which builds on the unique structure of each manuscript. However, when a manuscript contains lacunae, the results when comparing the structures are not trustworthy. The article discusses how to deal with such problems. A definition of the notion lacuna in general is suggested, and also a typology for lacunae that could be used both by cataloguers of manuscripts and by scholars. Moreover, a model for how to calculate the parts of a text that are missing in smaller lacunae is presented.

    • "Early Modern Text Recycing: On the Study of Neolatin Texts". The study of Neo-Latin texts is discussed with special regard to intertextuality. It is argued that intertextuality in Neo-Latin texts depends partly on the fact that Latin was learnt through imitation, partly on the existence of a rich variety of multifaceted texts - which cannot be classed as either "literary" or "non-literary" - within the learned Republic of Letters. Texts were widely spread and read, and the subtexts of Neo-Latin texts are to a high extent tother texts from the Early Modern period. The Latin correspondence of the Swedish poet Sophia Elisabeth Brenner is taken as an example. This correspondence depended heavily on that of the famous Dutch scholar and author Anna Maria van Schurman. Her correspondence served as a model both with regard to the interaction between the correspondents and to literary style. Passages are echoed, transformed, "recycled". The challenge for the Neo-Latin scholar is to gain an increased awareness of the importance of intertextuality in the studied texts, and to place them fruitfully within a literary tradition. Close interdisciplinary cooperation facilitates this process.

    • In this contribution, Göransson explores the historical background of classical philology,in particular Latin, in Sweden. Research in Latin encompasses studies on Latin of alltimes: both classical, medieval and Neo-Latin. Göransson discusses the growth of the subjectboth in the upper secondary school and in the universities in the late 1990s. Today, however, the economic system is hard on all minor disciplines. Collaboration, especiallywithin graduate education, would be the best way to make sure that the Latin disciplineremains strong in all four main universities in Sweden.

  • Ingår i: Journal of the Electrochemical Society. - : The Electrochemical Society. - 0013-4651 .- 1945-7111. ; 161
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nickel, zinc and nickel-rich NiZn alloys were formed on platinum by galvanostatic pulse plating from aqueous sulfate baths. The alloys were formed in three steps, first in anomalous deposition by a current pulse, secondly by dissolution and oxidation during the open circuit potential in each cycle and finally by anodic stripping of the fully plated sample. The treatment leaves a stable phase with an alloy composition of Ni0.8Zn0.2. The potential-time curves during the plating procedure were used to qualitatively describe the nucleation and growth processes. For Zn a fully covered surface was obtained after one pulse while for Ni and NiZn three-dimensional clusters were obtained in the first pulse. Further growth of these layers involves nucleation on the substrate and deposited clusters. The films were characterized with optical microscopy, SEM/EDX, AFM, XPS, TEM and by electrochemical methods. XPS revealed that the surfaces become gently oxidized by the stripping in the plating solution. For Ni a bi-layer of NiO/Ni(OH)2 was found on the surface while for NiZn mainly the hydroxide was detected. The electrocatalytic properties of the layers toward oxygen reduction in alkaline solution were explored and the NiZn alloy was proven to be an excellent catalyst for hydrogen peroxide production.

  • Ingår i: Journal of The Electrochemical Society. - : The Electrochemical Society. - 0013-4651 .- 1945-7111. ; 159:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ni rich NiZn alloys were prepared on Pt substrates by galvanostatic pulse plating from baths of variable Ni:Zn ratio. The pulse plated NiZn alloys are crystallographically amorphous and their overall chemical composition shows relatively weak dependence on the pulse plating conditions. The local structure of the NiZn alloys determined from EXAFS spectra conforms to a model assuming coexistence of cubic and hexagonal-like arrangements. In the case of alloys plated from baths of lowZn content the cubic environment is zinc free and in the case of alloys plated from bath of high Zn content the Zn enters both cubic and hexagonal arrangement. The fraction of each of the coexisting local structures reflects the pulse plating conditions. The Ni rich NiZn alloys are active in the hydrogen evolution reaction showing electrocatalytic activity superior to that of bulk nickel. The electrocatalytic activity of the alloy samples in hydrogen evolution increases with increasing fraction of hexagonal local structure. This behavior is attributed to the residual strain mainly in the hexagonal-like environment.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Electrochimica Acta. - : Elsevier BV. - 0013-4686. ; 139, s. 345-355
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Oxidation of propenol on nanostructured pulse plated Ni and NiZn alloys in alkaline solution gives the corresponding aldehyde, propenal, as the major product. The process is redox mediated by the NiOOH/Ni(OH)2 couple and starts as soon as NiOOH is formed on the surface. Depending on the applied potential, propenol oxidation takes place in parallel with water oxidation. The latter requires a higher surface concentration of NiOOH compared to propenol oxidation, indicating that a binuclear mechanism for oxygen evolution prevails at low overpotentials. The redox reaction of nickel oxide is markedly slower at the NiZn alloy than for solid Ni or pulse plated Ni, which also is reflected in the oxidation of water and propenol. Separation of all three oxidation currents (Ni(OH)2, water and propenol) shows that pulse plated Ni is more efficient as catalyst than NiZn per NiOOH site, for both water and propenol oxidation. The role of Zn ions in the mixed NiZn hydroxide is discussed and a mechanism for propenol oxidation is suggested

    • Hydrogen peroxide is a valuable chemical used in various applications and there is a demand for small on-site production plants. An attractive way to produce hydrogen peroxide is by electrochemical reduction of oxygen, using electrocatalytic materials that favour formation of hydrogen peroxide instead of water. Oxygen reduction on carbon in alkaline solution is known to produce mainly hydrogen peroxide but the overpotential is large and electrocatalytic materials need to be used in combination with carbon. In the present study, the mechanism of oxygen reduction in alkaline solution was studied using NiO, Ni0.75Co0.25O and CoO powders in a matrix of carbon paste. The desired product is hydrogen peroxide and the rotating ring disc technique was used to measure the amount of hydrogen peroxide formed. Two separate processes are observed with a peak shaped wave at low overpotentials and a sigmoidal process at high overpotentials. The charge involved in the first process and the heterogeneous rate constant for the second process were determined and found to be higher in the presence of oxide compared to pure carbon paste. Maximum increase was found for the NiO containing electrode with five times higher charge in the low overpotential region and 25 times higher rate constant in the high overpotential region. The mechanism of oxygen reduction comprises redox mediated electron transfer reactions involving Ni(II)/Ni(III) states on the surface. In the low overpotential region, where oxygen reduction on carbon is mediated by native quinone groups, the increased activity is explained by an interplay between the quinone and Ni(OH)2/NiOOH redox couples.

    • Poor communication between surgical and anesthesia unit personnel may jeopardize patient safety. Review reports from a national survey on patient safety performed at 17 units 2011-2013 were analyzed in order to identify strategies to reduce risks related to the interaction between surgery and anesthesia. The reports were reviewed in this study by an independent group in order to extract findings related to communication between anesthesia and surgical unit personnel. Suggested strategies to improve patient safety included: uniform national health declaration forms; consistent use of admission notes; uniform systems for documenting medical information; multidisciplinary forum for evaluation of high-risk patients; weekly and daily scheduling of surgical programs; application of the WHO check list; open dialog during surgery; oral and written reports from the surgeon to the postoperative unit; and combined mortality and morbidity conferences.

    • Background: Many adverse events occur due to poor communication between surgical and anesthesia unit personnel. The aim of this study was to identify strategies to reduce risks unveiled by a national survey on patient safety. Methods: During 2011-2015, specially trained survey teams visited the surgery departments at Swedish hospitals and documented routines concerning safety in abdominal surgery. The reports from the first seventeen visits were reviewed by an independent group in order to extract findings related to routines in communication between anesthesia and surgical unit personnel. Results: In general, routines regarding preoperative risk assessment were safe and well-coordinated. On the other hand, routines regarding medication prior to surgery, reporting between the different units, and systems for reporting and providing feedback on adverse events were poor or missing. Strategies with highest priority include: 1. a uniform national health declaration form; 2. consistent use of admission notes; 3. systems for documenting all important medical information, that is accessible to everyone; 4. a multidisciplinary forum for the evaluation of high-risk patients; 5. weekly and daily scheduling of surgical programs; 6. application of the WHO check list; 7. open dialog during surgery; 8. reporting based on SBAR; 9. oral and written reports from the surgeon to the postoperative unit; and 10. combined mortality and morbidity conferences. Conclusion: One repeatedly occurring hazard endangering patient safety was related to communication between surgical and anesthesia unit personnel. Strategies to reduce this hazard are suggested, but further research is required to test their effectiveness.

  • The Arts of Editing Medieval Greek and Latin : a Casebook
  • 2016
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the triumph of the codex, medieval literature became more deeply hermeneutic in character. A vast range of texts, in various languages and genres, were not only copied with the commentaries and glosses of ancient tradition, but also underwent continuous reworking and transformation. Indeed, the very act of transcribing texts into a manuscript was often an incentive to rewrite them. This practice resulted in a bewildering number of textual versions that lived alongside their originals, and sometimes displaced them, but were nevertheless fundamental to their transmission and interpretation, often resulting in complex textual layers. All of them, from commentaries on biblical books, hymns, or sequences to texts for liturgical use with many local versions, from model sermon collections to florilegia and encyclopaedic works, came to encompass multiple paratextual and intermedial forms, be it in the guise of other texts or images or music, all with their own histories of transmission.Despite the importance in the development of medieval thought and culture their widespread dissemination evinces, these works have remained largely unedited, or unavailable in reliable modern editions. One reason for this has surely been that they were seen as merely functional texts and regarded as less important than the canonical texts. Yet the sheer number of different versions also makes them resistant to traditional and well-established editorial protocols.Issuing from Stockholm University's Ars edendi research programme (2008–2015), The Arts of Editing Medieval Greek and Latin draws together eighteen case studies covering typical medieval genres such as commentaries and glosses, liturgical texts, model sermons, and anthologies. Exploiting examples not typically discussed in manuals of textual criticism, these essays describe the challenges and opportunities in producing single-manuscript editions or editions involving large numbers of witnesses, editing different versions of the same author's text or anthologies containing the works of multiple authors, as well as in capturing stages of textual genesis and textual variability, relating text to image, and harnessing digital tools. A closing chapter seeks to trace common threads as well as differences, offering reflections on broader questions of editorial theory and practice.

  • Wår lärda Skalde-fru : Sophia Elisabet Brenner och hennes tid
  • 2011
