  • Leading the teacher team - balancing between formal and informal power in program leadership
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Tertiary Education and Management. - : Springer Nature. - 1358-3883 .- 1573-1936. ; 24:1, s. 49-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This continuous research within Nordic engineering institutions targets the contexts and possibilities for leadership among engineering education program directors. The IFP-model, developed based on analysis of interviews with program leaders in these institutions, visualizes the program director's informal and formal power. The model is presented as a tool for starting a shared discussion on the complexities of the leadership of engineering program development. The authors liken program development to hunting in teams. Each individual expert in the program is needed, and all experts will need to work and collaborate for the same target. This calls for strategic and long-term thinking of engineering education development. Institutions should support the development of both formal structures as well as informal leadership skills among their program directors, but never fall for the temptation to see the program director as the only actor on the stage.

  • Program leadership from a Nordic perspective - Managing education development
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 8th International CDIO Conference, Brisbane, Australia.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nordic Five Tech (N5T) is a strategic alliance between five technical universities in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The overall aim is to “utilize shared and complementary strengths and create synergy within education, research and innovation”. In this paper we focus on university educational development issues by investigating the program leadership at five Nordic technical universities. Specifically, the paper compares definitions, views and experiences of education leadership in the Nordic Five Tech (N5T) universities. The paper does this by, first, reviewing the definitions of roles and responsibilities for program directors at each university, and second, by presenting results from a survey carried out in March 2012 among program directors at the N5T universities. Based on this data, we analyze how program directors experience their role, their possibilities to lead, and their opportunities of learning to lead. How is time for reflection and development as leaders handled at the different universities? The paper goes on to consider what impact the mandate of the leadership role has on the possibilities for developing educational programs. For instance, how can program directors ensure that learning objectives concerning generic skills and abilities are reached? How can program directors drive implementation of integrative and value-oriented topics such as sustainable development, innovation and entrepreneurship?

  • THE PEDAGOGICAL DEVELOPERS INITIATIVE : SYSTEMATIC SHIFTS, SERENDIPITIES, AND SETBACKS
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 13th International CDIO Conference in Calgary, Canada, June 18-22, 2017.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pedagogical projects have often, at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, as well as elsewhere, been initiated and managed by individual enthusiasts rather than dedicated teams. This generally decreases the possibility of successful implementation of more ambitious ideas, e.g., changing educational programs, implementing the CDIO syllabus, or strengthening the pedagogical development of larger parts of the faculty. To enable wider and more effective change, KTH top management therefore launched a universityencompassing three-year project in 2014, in which a group of highly motivated teachers from all schools at KTH were appointed part-time pedagogical developers (PDs). The PDs were given the task of promoting pedagogical development and facilitate cooperation and knowledge exchange among faculty members, as described in two previous papers at CDIO conferences. From 2017, the outcomes of this project are supposed to be integrated parts of the KTH line organization. The project has led to numerous actions, which would have been difficult to set in motion unless given the freedom in time to explore and to develop into a collective effort rather than a myriad of individual “stand-alone” examples. By addressing key areas for pedagogical development, our group of dedicated faculty have tried to surpass the suboptimal "lock-in" of strict individual reasoning and to deal with surfaced questions and relevant issues in a broader collective manner. A major insight confirmed by the project and its many sub-projects has indeed been the fundamental importance of collegial discussions and the creation of processes that facilitate and support teacher cooperation. We have also, through discussions with faculty at KTH, confirmed the need for clearly defined, tangible incentives for teachers, motivating them to participate in pedagogical development activities, even if this means less time left for the traditional pathway to rewards within academia, i.e. research. In this paper, we chart changes that have occurred in the educational practices at KTH by describing and discussing the project’s focus on pedagogical development of faculty, actual execution of changes in the engineering educations, lessons learned along the way, and visions yet to be realised.

  • The Pedagogical Developers Initiative – Changing Educational Practices and Strengthening CDIO skills
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: <em>Proceedings of the 11th International CDIO Conference, Chengdu, China, June 8-11 2015</em>.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper put emphasis on change agents within the universities and how local initiatives can be systematically approached and ramped up. Rooted in the challenges and constraints that have been addressed in past educational program initiatives, the case consists of specific focus areas to leverage impact. Universities continuously strives to provide the best conditions for an inspiring and prosperous learning environment, and to provide educational programs with teaching of excellent educational quality. KTH is no exception and therefore the university management has initiated a pedagogical program starting in 2014. One of the first thing initiated within the framework of this pedagogical program is the creation of a group of 24 pedagogical developers. The focus for the pedagogical developers is to facilitate the opportunities for KTHs faculty to work together and create consensus on educational development in different teaching teams. This paper presents the University's pedagogical developers' initiative as a whole and how this has been outlined in detail to reach specific redesign targets. The School of Industrial Engineering and Management pedagogical group consists of five practicing teachers that besides this new role also engage heavily in various courses of the School's departments. Since the pedagogical initiative is aligned with several important CDIO aspects, e.g. the learning environment, formats of formative feedback, assessment and examination there is also importance to reassure this in the existing Master level programs. At KTH the five-year comprehensive Master of Science in Engineering programs concern distinct vocational educations in which the CDIO aspects are very important. At the same time the programs has been divided in a basic level (B.Sc. in Engineering) of three years and a advanced level (M.Sc.) of two years. This has for instance made it harder to align the progression between first cycle level and second cycle level regarding for instance the CDIO efforts (e.g. oral and written communication, teamwork). This paper will therefore discuss and enhance how the pedagogical programme, we as pedagogical developers, can support and strengthen the initiation and implementation of the CDIO aspects in the education.

  • The pedagogical developers initiative - development, implementation and lessons learned from a systematic approach to faculty development
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 12th International CDIO Conference, Turku University of Applied Sciences, Turku, Finland, June 12-16, 2016. - : Turku University. - 9789522166104 ; , s. 497-508
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a systematic, university--wide approach to creating an encompassing movement towards faculty development. In 2014, KTH Royal Institute of Technology launched the pedagogical developers initiative, appointing part--time pedagogical developers among teachers from all schools of KTH, to implement and strengthen good teaching and learning practices among faculty and students. They are teachers active in different educational programmes, with experience of, and interest in, pedagogical issues. In line with CDIO standard 10, the purpose of the pedagogical developers’ initiative is to facilitate cooperation and knowledge exchange between faculty members, and to establish communities of practice. The paper presents the activities, processes for developing these activities and preliminary results from the initiative’s second year, which focused much on supporting faculty development by putting into place a series of workshops, a format chosen for its combination of active community-building learning and time efficiency. The topics of the workshops emerged to meet faculty needs identified by the pedagogical developers during the first year. The workshops were created by smaller teams of pedagogical developers from different schools of KTH. This enabled a wide array of experiences and perspectives to be incorporated into the workshops. Main focuses of the workshops have been on creating internal discussions in dynamic communities of practice on specific subjects of interest, and on creating forums for exchange of ideas, open to the whole faculty. During Autumn 2015, the workshops have been offered as voluntary add-on parts of the basic course in teaching and learning offered to faculty at KTH. This first round of workshops generated a positive interest from teachers, and participant feedback indicates that they particularly appreciated the opportunity to work directly with their own courses and the opportunity to discuss pedagogical aspects with peers.

  • Educating the new Engineer and Retargeting the Engineering Curriculum for the future Industrial Landscape
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: INTED2011 Proceedings. ; , s. 1145-1152
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As the former U.S. Secretary of Education expressed it: “We are currently preparing students for jobs and technologies that done yet exist…in order to solve problems we don’t know are problems yet”. This implies a need for Engineering Education to adapt to the fact that the nature of work is changing. This paper discuss how a retargeted Engineering Curriculum can be defined with the help of future pictures of industry. By presenting a different categorization of labor employment statistics new pictures of industry future can be predicted usable when developing the new Engineering Curriculum.

  • MECHATRONIC METAPHORS : An embodied realist framework of complexity and expertise in mechatronic project work
  • 2023

    • While they originate from different contexts and values, the Mechatronic and Project Management research communities are both committed to the study of the process of complex engineering systems design. These two fields have generally been engaged in their research separated from each other. Recently, calls have been heard from both to end such disciplinary separation. This paper seeks to conceptually relate the two research communities, seeking to understand how they can be seen as different, related and inclusive of each other through offering three conceptual models of their relationships.

  • Exploring the emergence of lock-in in large-scale projects : A process view
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Project Management. - : Elsevier. - 0263-7863 .- 1873-4634. ; 38:1, s. 47-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the emergence of lock-in in large-scale projects. Although large-scale projects have been studied for decades, most studies have applied economic or psychological perspectives to emphasize decision-making processes at the project front-end. Of those studies, some have focused on poor decision-making due to lock-in and the escalating commitments of decision-makers to ineffective courses of action. However, little is known about the way that project decisions are affected by organizational and inter-organizational contexts and the actors involved. Understanding decisions from a process viewpoint with a long-term (inter-) organizational perspective will lead to a better understanding of lock-in and the overall performance of large-scale projects. This qualitative research is based on a case study. The research setting is the multi-actor Madrid-Barcelona High-Speed rail Line (HSL) project in Spain. Through observations, interviews, several project documents, and report analysis, we explore the processual nature of the choices made during the course of the project. We consider the contextual conditions that give rise or support the emergence of lock-in in relation to pre- and post-project effects, institutional influences, and management practices that create action spaces at the project level. Our findings suggest that lock-in emergence requires the recognition of the long-term (inter-) organizational perspective regarding mechanisms and effects rather than confining decisions to the individual or single actor control in the front-end of projects. Based on organizational theory, the main contribution of this paper is to enrich our understanding of the emergence of lock-in using process theories.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Proceedings, Vol. 2023, No. 1. - : Academy of Management.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Collaboration involving large variety of actors across sectors, industries, and institutional settings have become prevalent in searching and creating new knowledge for variety of wicked and complex problems. These fluid forms of collaboration – labelled as knowledge ecosystems – allow organizations to collaborate with other organizations and individuals in a quest to search for and create new knowledge. The literature has thus far helped recognize the prevalence of knowledge ecosystems and their potential benefits, but is relatively silent on their origins and emergence. To bridge this gap, in this paper we theorize knowledge ecosystems as meta-organizations that pursue organizationality via establishment of organizing elements that aim for joint search of new knowledge. By virtue of this foundation, we analyze a longitudinal case study of High-Capacity Transport ecosystem in Sweden, and demonstrate the key organizational elements that emerged over the course of over ten years. We distinguish a process model explaining how three elements of organizationality in a knowledge ecosystem – participation, identity, and actorhood – emerge sequentially and by building iteratively on each other. The process model contributes to the theory, practice, and policy of knowledge ecosystems emergence.

  • Multi-organisational Collaboration : Practices and Processes of Knowledge Work
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Proceedings. - : Academy of Management.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the last two decades, new forms of collaboration involving a network of a larger variety of actors across institutional settings have become more prevalent. These more fluid forms of collaboration as ecosystems and platforms allow organisations to collaborate at arm’s length with organisations and individuals searching for knowledge, developing complementary products, and services in project patterns. In this paper, we provide an exploratory understanding of the process of knowledge-work in such a new multi-actor organising platform (CLOSER) in Sweden. Taking a process perspective, we explore how the actors in the transport sector and forest industry, find difficulties to search for and transform the program network-related knowledge in a coopetitive context. Building on an in-depth longitudinal case study, we do that by shedding light on the High-Capacity Transport (HCT) program organizing and its (dis-) embeddedness in the platform. Based on the longitudinal analysis, the paper sets forth context features linking the search for and knowledge transformation activities within the multi-organisational network and among the participant organisation based on the interplay between industrial settings and the underlying conditions suggesting implications for practice in such new forms of collaboration and beyond.

  • Path Dependence and Path Shaping : Unearthing institutional dynamics in large-scale project organizing
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Over the last two decades, large-scale project endeavors or major programs that typically deliver a substantial physical infrastructure or a complex product with a lifetime that can extend for decades and across industries have become the norm for many utility sectors, such as transport, energy, water, or food. The allure of ever-larger projects shows no sign of fading away in the face of sustainable development and grand societal challenges – quite the contrary. A significant policy perspective and the trend points to the new generation of large-scale projects, which in contrast to the early industrial era in the US and Europe, compels efforts that require management to minimize affecting the surrounding societal environment. Besides, today's modern infrastructure projects tend to involve a more complex network of organizations – “global” organizations – yielding a dynamic component in project organizing. Large-scale projects are complex endeavors embedded in highly institutionalized social structures and technologies, including public and private actors with various rationalities, modes of collaboration, and project management competencies. These projects evolve, arising as inherently societal concerns, and then shift to technical problems and vice-versa, introducing inertia, organizational path-dependency, and lock-ins. Thus, large-scale projects pose enormous temporary organizing challenges under conditions of institutional complexity, creating “wicked problems” for their management. Hence, the questions of how these large-scale projects as inter- organizational collaboration unfold, and how they can be organized despite these challenges have become crucial in academia and practice alike. Scholars from different disciplines have picked up these questions of organizational, and technological issues in large-scale infrastructure project organizing and have put forth valuable insights into such endeavors. Through the exploratory and elaborated case-based research, this thesis contributes to the debate on large-scale project organizing by advancing an institutional perspective. In line with the overall research aim and conceptual framing, the research design has a qualitative nature and relies on a process approach. The thesis draws from in-depth case studies of project-based processes in the division of Adif - the Spanish Administrator of Rail Infrastructure and ProRail (Adif’s counterpart, the manager responsible for rail infrastructure in the Netherlands), among other principal contractors and suppliers involved in the project(s). The thesis provides a rich empirical examination; it shows that to understand large-scale project organizing, there is a need to change the ontological priorities that underpin the mainstream literature on behavioral studies in project management. The thesis develops nascent theorizing on how the in-between temporary and permanent (inter-) organizational nature of large-scale projects in the presence of institutions narrates the emergence of processes, e.g., path-dependence, and lock-in. A conceptualization of path- shaping and project actors’ agency that bridges the gap between the intra- organizational and institutional level efforts is promoted. The managerial implications of this thesis are two-fold. First, the appended papers put forth among other frameworks and process models that are indeed useful to be utilized. They outline ideas relevant because they lay the groundwork for project managers to extend their efforts beyond the micro- managing of tasks. In particular, Paper A develops the lock-in process model that can be useful for project managers. Secondly, the thesis gives countless advice and managerial implications. The most important being the consideration of heterogeneity in large-scale project contexts in the multi- organizational setting and their interdependencies in broad project networks. They represent the sources of variation in the desired outcomes. Accordingly, Paper B suggests attention needs to be directed to the understanding of the industry – as the field-level institution and its (inter-) organizational components in the context as an essential feature of project management practice. In other words, this thesis suggests that embeddedness in large-scale infrastructure projects is of crucial importance. To this end, Paper C and D propose means for a responsive and active project owner organization, that are essential for effectively interacting with other actors, and for selecting and managing both contractual and trust-based mechanisms effectively.Conclusively, the thesis suggests that project managers’ institutional knowledge in large-scale project settings is equally important, if not more, than the economic or engineering expertise.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heeding recent calls for more studies on the relationship between projects and institutions, this paper reports on a collaborative case study to shed light on the recursive relations of large-scale projects and their institutional fields. Given the industry as the field-level institution, this study explores how two project organizations experienced the industry changes, its influence on the arrangement of large-scale projects, and the management response used to legitimize these arrangements. The qualitative secondary data analysis of two High-Speed rail projects in Spain and The Netherlands is based on semi-structured interviews, observations, and document analysis. This paper provides the institutional fields’ contextual detail and deepens our understanding of temporal institutional complexity that bound large-scale project arrangements. The findings suggest that in both cases the management responses altered across time and evolved depending on the salience of the institutional pressure, through the interplay with 1) regulative, 2) normative, and 3) dynamic cultural-cognitive forces, resulting in cycles of project legitimacy.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tackling the societal challenges we are facing requires collaboration among many actors with quite different backgrounds and interests. Indeed, these challenges call for systemic and cross-sector collaboration. However, such collaboration is associated with several problems, concerning the creation and distribution of value among the actors involved. We need a new way of thinking about how value should be created and distributed among the involved actors to be able to make the necessary system-wide shifts that are needed. This article presents findings from an in-depth field study of the High-Capacity Transport (HCT) project and focuses on the system-wide shift towards more sustainable models within the transportation sector in Sweden. The article highlights four pressing challenges that may negatively influence collaboration, search, ideation, and value creation processes, and identifies four corresponding value pathways for effective system transformation projects. It offers advice on how to maneuver through these four challenges in system transformation projects to produce socially valuable outcomes.

  • A Maturation Model For Project-Based Organisations - With Uncertainty Management As An Ever-Present Multi-Project Management Focus
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: South African Journal of Economic and Management Sciences. - : AOSIS. - 1015-8812 .- 2222-3436. ; 17:1, s. 33-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The classical view of multi-project management does not capture its dynamic nature. Current theory falls short in its ability to explain how the management of project-based companies evolves because of their need to be agile and adaptable in a changing environment. The purpose of this paper is therefore to present a descriptive model that elucidates the maturation processes in a project-based organisation as well as to provide an enhanced understanding of multi-project management in practice. The maturation model illustrates the way the management of project-based organisations evolves between structuring administration and managing uncertainties, and emphasises the importance of active individual actions and situated management actions that have to be undertaken in order to coordinate, synchronise and communicate the required knowledge and skills. The outcomes primarily reveal that, although standardised project models are used and considerable resources are spent on effective project portfolio management, the way information and communication are dealt with is vitally important in the management of project-based organisations. This is particularly true of informal and non-codified communication.

  • Agile and Traditional Methods in Software Projects: : Toward an Integrated Approach for IT consultants
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Currently a debate exists among R&D management scholars in which Agile and Traditional (i.e. sequential/waterfall/ plan-driven) models are compared. Typically, this debate is driven from a polarized either/or perspective, where one (process) model is confronted to the other. Based on an in-depth ethnographic case study, within a Swedish IT consultancy firm, this paper aims to nuance this either/or perspective. More specifically, the paper investigates challenges of implementing Agile methodologies in client-specific IT projects. Findings reveal that, in contrast to consumer-oriented IT products, were products are released continuously, client-specific IT projects includes a contractual relation linked to a payment structure defining the delivery. Accordingly, in client-specific project a tension exists between on the one hand agility and on the other hand transparent and mutually agreed deliveries which needs to be managed. The current Agile-Traditional debate is dominated by an argumentation on the process level. In practice, processes are embodied and supported by a variety of (IT) tools. These tools may, or may not, support Agile methodologies and without considering these tools the implementation of Agile methodologies will only become a façade. Finally, the process needs also to be put in the context of initial project structure and customer involvement.

  • Integrating strategic aspects with project portfolio management : Exploring different ways to deal with organizational dependencies
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 1st ANNUAL EDIM PhD CONFERENCE. - 9788864930220
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The dominant part of project portfolio management literature is focused on standardized project management methods for planning, prioritizing, and resource allocation. Comprehensively addressing the resource dependency challenge, the mainstream literature overlooks other types of project dependencies, namely, technological and organizational dependencies. Arguing that a more comprehensive understanding of the dependencies is necessary, we explore how they can be dealt with when integrating the strategic aspects in the project portfolio management. The comparative case study of two different multi-project settings reveals that in both contexts a combination of vertical and horizontal communication mechanisms was used in order to enhance the strategic alignment. At the same time, principal mechanisms in the combinations were different. In the first case, a departmental head ensured the vertical connection to strategy and a PMO head enhanced the horizontal connections. In the second case, program steering groups both communicated the strategy and represented arenas for political negotiation. In turn, program managers further contributed to resolving organizational dependencies. The aim of this paper is to contribute to an improved understanding of different ways in which strategic aspects can be integrated with portfolio management, by exploring different ways to deal with the organizational dependencies.

  • Ingår i: International Journal of Managing Projects in Business/Emerald. - : Emerald. - 1753-8378 .- 1753-8386. ; 6:1, s. 152-172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to situate project portfolio management practice and explore its improvisational nature. The overall aim is to deepen the knowledge of what project portfolio managers do when they manage portfolios based on an organizational theory perspective.Design/methodology/approach – This research explores the situated actions of project portfolio managers managing project portfolios and is based on two different case studies. The approach is qualitative and interpretative, with the aim of gradually developing an understanding.Findings – The primary contributions in this paper are insights that enhance the understanding of project portfolio management practice, and the differences in practice between portfolio managers and project managers when creating “action space” and improvising. This knowledge is important for both project theory and project practice, for example when developing managerial competences and sense making structures as well as organizational design in order to increase competitiveness. The findings also contribute to project theory in relation to research on the “Practice Turn” and the literature on re‐situating projects.Research limitations/implications – The research implications emphasize the need for a better understanding of project portfolio management in practice, and an awareness of the need of uncertainty management executed by the portfolio managers situated actions (i.e. fulfilled by walk‐tour and circle communication).Practical implications – The practical implications are an awareness of the fact that project‐based organizational settings have to emphasize a holistic approach and acknowledge the need for situated leadership (in particular for their project portfolio managers).Originality/value – This paper fulfills an identified need to study situated project portfolio management practice.

  • Organisering av projektbaserade företag : Ledning, styrning och genomförande av projektbaserad industriell verksamhet
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis focuses on the management and organizing of project-based companies, and the purpose is to enhance the understanding of multi-project management. The main part of the research and literature on project-based organizations has too narrow focus, since it is mainly interested in how to handle the difficulties that arise when executing a multi-project portfolio. Multi-project management is also often dominated by the thought of effectiveness and rationality through the use of project portfolio management methods and tools, which makes resource allocation and project priority the number one issue. Therefore, the profound theoretical ambition with this thesis is to complement the literature on project-based organizations with an empirically based understanding, inspired by organizing theory, for both research on, and practical execution of, multi-project management from a project-as-practice perspective. The thesis is based on case studies of two different project-based industrial companies, and the main methods for the empirical fieldwork were interviews and observations. The need for an organizing perspective on industrial organizations’ management and control of their project-based business originates from the importance of managing the need for organizational cooperation that arises because of the increased amount of temporary organizing procedures in a project-based company. This study sheds light on several important aspects for management and organizing of the special dynamics that characterize project-based organizations. One aspect is how the organizing of a project-based business demands a kind of insecurity-management, actions and activities aiming to balance the need for structure with the need for situated management. Another aspect is the importance of integrating the management and organizing of the multi-project business on a top management level.

    • PurposeWith the purpose of enhancing the understanding of multi-project management, this paper is based on the findings of a doctoral thesis that focuses on the management and organisation of project-based companies. Design/methodology/approachThe research presented here is based on an inductive and qualitative case study approach, characterised by an exploratory purpose and based on an in depth analysis of two individual cases. FindingsThe study sheds light on several important aspects for managing and organising the special dynamics that characterise project-based organisations. The thesis discusses how the balance between structuring mechanisms and the ability to handle the ever-present uncertainty in project-based organisations (PBOs) can be understood. This balance is necessary in order to handle the amount of changing requirements – both operational and contextual – during a certain period of time, thereby, being given the opportunity to encourage the organisation's dynamic capability. Practical implicationsThis research proposes that the traditional theoretical focus of “How to … ” in project portfolio management is neither adequately efficient, nor sufficient. This view must be complemented with active individual and situated management actions, and the findings encapsulate the importance of the multi-project management to focus on the balance between creativity, flexibility, and structure. Originality/valueThe profound theoretical ambition with this work is to complement the literature on project-based organisations with an empirically-based understanding inspired by organising theory, for both the research and practical execution of multi-project management from a project-as-practice perspective. This research expands the conceptual view on the balance between structuring mechanisms and the ability to handle the ever-present uncertainty in PBOs

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many manufacturers are moving to servitization, but making that move successfully requires considering the underlying business logic of a division or product. Differences in existing conditions, such as product characteristics or other business attributes, may determine success in transition to a services-based business model and create challenges for a firm moving, for instance, from a spare-parts model to advanced service contracts. Our study pinpoints a number of key product attributes that define how far a company can move up the service ladder. The findings suggest that the Power-by-the-Hour model pioneered by Rolls-Royce suits products that constitute critical ancillary input to, and not essential elements of, customers' core processes; that require low initial investments relative to high total costs of ownership; that are used in controllable operating environments with measurable performance requirements; and that are associated with high risk and high costs in the event of failure. Further, the service delivery system must be integrated and orchestrated to be product-specific-that is, aligned with the function and operating conditions of the product in use.

  • Navigating Manufacturing Firms to Service-led Business Models
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis tackles an increasingly popular phenomenon – servitization of manufacturing – a growth opportunity for industrial firms through a service-led business model. However, implementing a servitization strategy in industrial firms triggers multifaceted challenges and requires further research. The thesis builds on extensive studies of world leading multinational capital equipment manufacturers that develop a successful service business model. The dissertation builds on three closely interconnected studies. The first study is an in-depth exploratory case study of a Swedish industrial firm by cross-comparing two servitization initiatives—one that was highly successful, and one that was less so. The second study juxtaposes 10 worldwide subsidiaries of the same Swedish industrial firm to compare and contrast how the servitization process unfolded. This study focuses on the management of service capability development, as well as the management of emerging tensions between the product business units and service business units. The third study extends the research scope by analyzing four industrial firms that successfully developed advanced services (e.g. outcome-based contracts). This thesis contributes to the servitization literature and business model literature by demarcating three business model archetypes for industrial firms: product business model, service business models and outcome business model. This thesis unpacks the content of the business model elements that underpins business model archetypes as well as the configuration and the relationship between the business model elements.

  • Task lists as infrastructure : an empirical study of multi-project work
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Project Organisation and Management. - 1740-2891 .- 1740-2905. ; 4:3, s. 272-285
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multi-project work is fragmented and unpredictable making project professionals continuously facing the risk of experienced control being reduced. In such work settings, there is an increased need for (temporary) sense making structures. In this article, the concept of infrastructure (Bowker and Star, 2002) is applied to multi-project work. The findings, which are based on 43 interviews with multi-project professionals, reveals that task lists are important infrastructures created for supporting sense making, control and prioritising. The task lists reduces ambiguity and uncertainty and thus bridge the gap between organisational demands and individual resources providing room for improvised action.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The literature elaborating on the agile process is extensive, but there is still little research discussing the challenges established firms face when implementing agile practices. Therefore,in this paper we discuss the challenges two large multinational telecommunication firmsface when changing how they organize their product development work, transitioning from the waterfall approachto agile practices. The purpose of both case studies was exploratory, i.e. to gain experience and raise issues for further research onthe implementation of agile practices. The focus of the study was to delve into how they managed and organized their product development, and if and when they adopted an agile approach. Our findings emphasize that in both cases it was the company ́s need to beable to quickly develop products based on newtechnical opportunities, as well asrecruit competent staffthat were the driving forces behind the implementation of agile practices.Based on our findings, we can conclude that there are some extensive challenges that arise due to the actual change process, and also several lesser challenges that occur because of change from sequential, to an agile way of working.

  • Ambiguity at the heart of design work : Sensing and negotiating ambiguity in knowledge-creation work
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Ambiguities have long intrigued design and new product development (NPD) researchers: The fascination seems rooted in an endeavor to understand how design outcomes may be created despite the ambiguous nature of such work. There are several classic contributions on how to categorize, avoid and approach ambiguities. Some of the newer theories have also pointed to benefits arising from temporarily sustaining ambiguity.Little research has considered how ambiguities emerge, how ambiguities are sensed by practitioners, and the actions the practitioners take, either to harness or to reduce the generative and transformative power of ambiguity, however. This is unfortunate, since ambiguities are at the heart of such knowing-work. If one does not know how to sense the emergence of ambiguities and act to reduce or harness their generative and transformative power, i.e. negotiate ambiguity, the work might become unproductive, confused, uncreative, and might require more energy and attention. The purpose of this research is to portray how ambiguities emerge and are negotiated in knowing-work. This is achieved by drawing on two cases of design and NPD work, from practice epistemology. The results indicated that the emerging ambiguities changed in the ongoing work, some being reduced, others becoming obsolete or persisting. The results also included five generalized actions to negotiate ambiguity: (1) constructing points of references, (2) mediating between perspectives, (3) anchoring in expertise, (4) disarming future resistance, and (5) creating shared visions. This research has concluded that the very essence of design work concerns the emergence and fading away of ambiguity. The actions taken to negotiate ambiguity mediates the emergence of the design outcome. This research makes two contributions: first, it illustrates how ambiguities open up design work by creating a space for action; second, it illustrates how actions to negotiate ambiguity maneuver in this space for action.
