  • Observation of rotation about the longest principal axis in Zr 89
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - 2469-9985. ; 99:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in Zr89 were populated in the Se80(C13,4n) reaction, and γ-ray coincidences were measured using the Indian National Gamma Array. The level scheme of Zr89 has been extended up to spin I=49/2 with the observation of a new dipole band. Directional correlation and polarization asymmetries of the γ rays have been measured to determine spin and parity of the levels. Line shapes of several transitions have been analyzed to determine lifetimes of the levels. Possible configurations of the band have been discussed using the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model. The calculations suggest a triaxial shape of the nucleus at high spins, and the band may represent rotation of the nucleus about the longest axis.

  • Evolution of collectivity and evidence of octupole correlations in Br 73
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - 2469-9985. ; 100:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in the Br73 nucleus have been populated via the Cr50(Si28,αp)Br73 fusion evaporation reaction with a beam energy of 90 MeV. The deexciting gamma rays were detected using the Indian National Gamma Array (INGA). Using the γ-γ coincidence technique, two new bands and eight new interconnecting transitions have been added. The strong interconnecting E1 transitions, between positive and negative parity bands, ensure the existence of octupole correlations at low spin. Line shapes have been observed for 17 transitions, which were analyzed by the Doppler-shift attenuation method to determine the lifetime of excited states of the yrast negative parity band and its signature partner band along with the positive parity band. The deduced transitional quadrupole moments Qt for the ground state band decrease with increasing spin, with their values ranging from 2.88 to 1.00 eb. A similar trend in the quadrupole moment has also been observed for the signature partner as well as for the positive parity band. This decrease in Qt with increasing spin for these bands is interpreted in terms of the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model and total Routhian surface calculations, which indicate possible band termination at higher spin.

  • High-spin spectroscopy of I-122
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 85:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in I-122 have been investigated using the Cd-116(B-11,5n)I-122 reaction at a beam energy of 65 MeV and gamma-ray coincidence events were recorded with the INGA spectrometer. The level scheme of I-122 has been extended up to spin I = 30. Experimental features, such as band-crossing frequencies, aligned angular momenta, signature splitting, and B(M1)/B(E2) ratios have been used for configuration assignments to low-energy band structures. Maximally aligned states involving all eight particles outside the Sn-114 core and states with one particle antialigned have been identified. Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations have been used to interpret high-spin structures.

  • Evolution of collective and noncollective structures in Xe 123
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - 2469-9985. ; 101:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An experiment involving a heavy-ion-induced fusion-evaporation reaction was carried out where high-spin states of Xe123 were populated in the Se80(Ca48,5n)Xe123 reaction at 207 MeV beam energy. Gamma-ray coincidence events were recorded with the Gammasphere Ge detector array. The previously known level scheme was confirmed and enhanced with the addition of five new band structures and several interband transitions. Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky (CNS) calculations were performed and compared with the experimental results in order to assign configurations to the bands.

  • Arsenic reduction by indigenous bacteria in shallow aquifers from Ambikanagar, West Bengal, India
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: ADVANCES IN ARSENIC RESEARCH. - WASHINGTON, DC : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 0841239134 ; , s. 132-147
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Possible biological mechanisms contributing towards the transformation of arsenic (As) in aquifer sediments was investigated in Ambikanagar. Enrichment cultures indicated several As tolerant species, which actively reduced As(V) under sub-oxic conditions. High As concentrations in the microcosms increased toxicity, and hence, bacterial types and the heterotrophic plate counts declined. Bacteria isolated from enrichment cultures were Acinetobacter johnsonii, Citrobacter freundii, Comamonas testosteroni, Enterobacter cloacae, and Sphingobium yanoikuyae. On inoculating the medium with these bacteria, different growth and As(V) reduction rates occurred. A zero-order model fits the As(V) reduction data. Initial As concentration seems to affect growth and As(V) reduction rates, and these values were highest in A. johnsonii. In contrast, C testosteroni and S. yanoikuyae were almost unaffected by the initial As(V) concentrations. As(V) reduction in these bacteria occurs for detoxification or respiratory purposes (e.g., A. johnsonii). These experiments confirm that microorganisms may result in remobilization of As from sediments, and impact groundwater treatment.

  • Neutron powder diffraction study of Ba3ZnRu2-xIrxO9 (x=0, 1, 2) with 6H-type perovskite structure
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Solid State Sciences. - : Elsevier BV. - 1293-2558 .- 1873-3085. ; 50, s. 58-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The triple perovskites Ba3ZnRu2-xIrxO9 with x = 0, 1, and 2 are insulating compounds in which Ru(Ir) cations form a dimer state. Polycrystalline samples of these materials were studied using neutron powder diffraction (NPD) at 10 and 295 K. No structural transition nor evidence of long range magnetic order was observed within the investigated temperature range. The results from structural refinements of the NPD data and its polyhedral analysis are presented, and discussed as a function of Ru/Ir content.

  • Origin of the Spin-Orbital Liquid State in a Nearly J=0 Iridate Ba3ZnIr2O9
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 116:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We show using detailed magnetic and thermodynamic studies and theoretical calculations that the ground state of Ba3ZnIr2O9 is a realization of a novel spin-orbital liquid state. Our results reveal that Ba3ZnIr2O9 with Ir5+ (5d(4)) ions and strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) arrives very close to the elusive J = 0 state but each Ir ion still possesses a weak moment. Ab initio density functional calculations indicate that this moment is developed due to superexchange, mediated by a strong intradimer hopping mechanism. While the Ir spins within the structural Ir2O9 dimer are expected to form a spin-orbit singlet state (SOS) with no resultant moment, substantial frustration arising from interdimer exchange interactions induce quantum fluctuations in these possible SOS states favoring a spin-orbital liquid phase down to at least 100 mK.

  • Collective and noncollective states in (120)Te
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 85:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in (120)Te were populated in the reaction (80)Se((48)Ca, alpha 4n)(120)Te at a beam energy of 207 MeV and gamma-ray coincidences were measured using the Gammasphere spectrometer. The previously known level scheme is extended to higher spin and new interband transitions and side-feeding branches are established. Five highly deformed rotational bands, extending up to almost I = 50, are observed for the first time. The bands are compared with similar structures found recently in neighboring nuclei. The experimental results are interpreted within the framework of the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model. Configuration assignments to several terminating states and to the high-spin bands are discussed.

  • Observation of high-spin bands with large moments of inertia in Xe 124
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813. ; 94:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in Xe124 have been populated using the Se80(Ca48,4n) reaction at a beam energy of 207 MeV and high-multiplicity, γ-ray coincidence events were measured using the Gammasphere spectrometer. Six high-spin bands with large moments of inertia, similar to those observed in neighboring nuclei, have been observed. The experimental results are compared with calculations within the framework of the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model. It is suggested that the configurations of the bands involve excitations of protons across the Z=50 shell gap coupled to neutrons within the N=50-82 shell or excited across the N=82 shell closure.

  • Revised level structure of Te-120
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 90:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The level scheme of the nucleus Te-120, populated in the reaction Se-80(Ca-48, alpha 4n), was reinvestigated using gamma-ray coincidence data measured with the Gammasphere spectrometer. Previously, five high-spin rotational bands were discovered in this nucleus. The present reinvestigation revealed that the decay of band b1 is more complex than suggested in the earlier work and that it cannot be uniquely determined. Furthermore, a number of new transitions are added to the level scheme. The implications for the spin assignments and excitation energies of the five bands and for comparisons with cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations are discussed.

  • High-Speed Video Observation of a Dart Leader Producing X-rays
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research - Space Physics. - : AMER GEOPHYSICAL UNION. - 2169-9380 .- 2169-9402. ; 124:12, s. 10564-10570
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work presents the first simultaneous X-ray measurement and high-speed video observation of the propagation of a lightning leader producing X-rays. As a result, the three-dimensional leader distance from the X-ray measurement and, for the first time, the conditions of the preexisting channel during the leader propagation were observed. Although four leaders in this seven-stroke flash followed the same path to ground, X-rays were only observed during the leader before the return stroke with the highest peak current. The fact that the other three leaders following the same path to ground did not produce detectable X-rays confirms the hypothesis that leader line charge density is an important factor that determines X-ray production. The fact that X-rays was recorded only when the leader tip was at a certain portion of the lightning channel confirms that the orientation of the leader plays an important role in the detection of X-rays.

  • Signature of quantum criticality in cuprates by charge density fluctuations
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - 2041-1723 .- 2041-1723. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The universality of the strange metal phase in many quantum materials is often attributed to the presence of a quantum critical point (QCP), a zero-temperature phase transition ruled by quantum fluctuations. In cuprates, where superconductivity hinders direct QCP observation, indirect evidence comes from the identification of fluctuations compatible with the strange metal phase. Here we show that the recently discovered charge density fluctuations (CDF) possess the right properties to be associated to a quantum phase transition. Using resonant x-ray scattering, we studied the CDF in two families of cuprate superconductors across a wide doping range (up to p = 0.22). At p* ≈ 0.19, the putative QCP, the CDF intensity peaks, and the characteristic energy Δ is minimum, marking a wedge-shaped region in the phase diagram indicative of a quantum critical behavior, albeit with anomalies. These findings strengthen the role of charge order in explaining strange metal phenomenology and provide insights into high-temperature superconductivity.
