  • Measurements of Elliptic and Triangular Flow in High-Multiplicity He-3 + Au Collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV

    • We present the first measurement of elliptic (v(2)) and triangular (v(3)) flow in high-multiplicity He-3 + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. Two-particle correlations, where the particles have a large separation in pseudorapidity, are compared in He-3 + Au and in p + p collisions and indicate that collective effects dominate the second and third Fourier components for the correlations observed in the He-3 + Au system. The collective behavior is quantified in terms of elliptic v(2) and triangular v(3) anisotropy coefficients measured with respect to their corresponding event planes. The v(2) values are comparable to those previously measured in d + Au collisions at the same nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy. Comparisons with various theoretical predictions are made, including to models where the hot spots created by the impact of the three He-3 nucleons on the Au nucleus expand hydrodynamically to generate the triangular flow. The agreement of these models with data may indicate the formation of low-viscosity quark-gluon plasma even in these small collision systems.

  • phi meson production in d plus Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV

    • The PHENIX Collaboration has measured phi meson production in d + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV using the dimuon and dielectron decay channels. The phi meson is measured in the forward (backward) d-going (Au-going) direction, 1.2 < y < 2.2 (-2.2 < y < -1.2) in the transverse-momentum (pT) range from 1-7 GeV/c and at midrapidity vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.35 in the p(T) range below 7 GeV/c. The phi meson invariant yields and nuclear-modification factors as a function of p(T), rapidity, and centrality are reported. An enhancement of phi meson production is observed in the Au-going direction, while suppression is seen in the d-going direction, and no modification is observed at midrapidity relative to the yield in p + p collisions scaled by the number of binary collisions. Similar behavior was previously observed for inclusive charged hadrons and open heavy flavor, indicating similar cold-nuclear-matter effects.

  • Systematic study of charged-pion and kaon femtoscopy in Au plus Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV

    • We present a systematic study of charged-pion and kaon interferometry in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. The kaon mean source radii are found to be larger than pion radii in the outward and longitudinal directions for the same transverse mass; this difference increases for more central collisions. The azimuthal-angle dependence of the radii was measured with respect to the second-order event plane and similar oscillations of the source radii were found for pions and kaons. Hydrodynamic models qualitatively describe the similar oscillations of the mean source radii for pions and kaons, but they do not fully describe the transverse-mass dependence of the oscillations.

  • Inclusive cross section and double-helicity asymmetry for pi(0) production at midrapidity in p plus p collisions at root s=510 GeV

    • PHENIX measurements are presented for the cross section and double-helicity asymmetry (A(LL)) in inclusive pi(0) production at midrapidity from p + p collisions at root s = 510 GeV from data taken in 2012 and 2013 at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The next-to-leading-order perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics theory calculation is in excellent agreement with the presented cross section results. The calculation utilized parton-to-pion fragmentation functions from the recent DSS14 global analysis, which prefer a smaller gluon-to-pion fragmentation function. The pi(0)A(LL) results follow an increasingly positive asymmetry trend with p(T) and root s with respect to the predictions and are in excellent agreement with the latest global analysis results. This analysis incorporated earlier results on pi(0) and jet A(LL) and suggested a positive contribution of gluon polarization to the spin of the proton Delta G for the gluon momentum fraction range x > 0.05. The data presented here extend to a currently unexplored region, down to x similar to 0.01, and thus provide additional constraints on the value of Delta G.

  • Interaction cross sections for Ne isotopes towards the island of inversion and halo structures of 29Ne and 31Ne

    • Interaction cross sections (σI) for Ne isotopes from the stability line to the vicinity of the neutron dripline have been measured at around 240 MeV/nucleon using BigRIPS at RIBF, RIKEN. The σI for 27–32Ne in every case exceed the systematic mass-number dependence of σI for stable nuclei, which can be explained by considering the nuclear deformation. In particular the σI for 29Ne and 31Ne are significantly greater than those of their neighboring nuclides. These enhancements of σI for 29Ne and 31Ne cannot be explained by a single-particle model calculation under the assumption that the valence neutron of 29Ne (31Ne) occupies the 0d3/2 (0f7/2 ) orbital, as expected from the standard spherical shell ordering. The present data suggest an s dominant halo structure of 29Ne and s- or p-orbital halo in 31Ne.

    • We demonstrate transmission of 368-WDM-38-core-3-mode × 24.5-GBaud 64- and 256-QAM signals over 13 km. Record data-rate and spectral-efficiency of 1158.7 b/s/Hz were enabled by a low DMD 38-core-3-mode fiber with high uniformity amongst cores.

    • Reaction cross sections of 8Li on stable targets were measured at intermediate energies. With the existing experimental data of interaction cross sections at 790 MeV/nucleon the nucleon density distribution of 8Liwas extracted by the use of the modified Glauber model. Meanwhile, the existing data of 8B have been also reanalyzed. Structures of 8Li and 8B were compared through the density. On the basis of dilute surface densities, the discussion of 7Li(n,γ)8Li and 7Be(p,γ)8B capture reactions was performed within the framework of the direct capture reaction mechanism. The calculations agreed quite well with the experimental data as well as other analyses.

  • Structure of 8Li from a reaction cross-section measurement

    • We have precisely measured reaction cross sections (σR) for 8Li using 9Be, 12C, 27Al, and proton targets at intermediate energies by the transmission method. From the energy dependence of the σR including the high energy data, the density distribution of 8Li was deduced through a modified Glauber model. It is shown that 8Li has a shorter tail structure in the density as compared with that of 8B and the matter radius of 8Li is similar to those of the other nonhalo Li isotopes. The result is consistent with the previous experiments that there is a tendency for 8Li to be a skin nucleus.

    • The charge-changing cross sections (σcc) of 28Si on a carbon target were measured with high precision atintermediate energies from 100 to 600 MeV/nucleon. The measured σcc decreases rapidly from low energies upto 200 MeV/nucleon, whereas at higher energies it appears almost constant. The energy dependence of σcc iscompared with a Glauber-type model calculation where only the proton distribution of 28Si is taken into account.A phenomenological correction factor deduced from the present data satisfactorily reproduces the experimentalσcc for other stable nuclei, whose charge distributions were determined by electron scattering and muon captureexperiments.

  • GO-GN Conceptual Frameworks Guide

    • If you’re a doctoral researcher (in any discipline) or someone who produces research in a professional capacity you’ve perhaps encountered the phrase “conceptual framework”. Sometimes a whole chapter of a Ph.D or Ed.D might be given over to investigating the relevance of different frameworks for an area of inquiry, or to synthesizing several frameworks together to ground the approach taken to answering a specific research question. Alternatively, you might not have heard much mention of conceptual frameworks or how they relate to what you are trying to achieve with your research. A conceptual framework brings together a set of ideas and articulates the different concepts that will be used in a study or research project. Because this is highly contextual - and often specific to a particular research question or approach - there aren’t really any general rules that cover how to do this. In addition, there is a lot of ambiguity and impreciseness in the language used to describe this stuff. Sometimes people talk about theoretical frameworks, or models, or a ‘theory of action’ that guides their research project. But do these mean different things? And are there differences between disciplines? In an empirical project the conceptual framework might be used to determine the kinds of questions to ask in a survey, or which data points to collect and focus on. A conceptual framework might be used to generate a hypothesis that is to be tested, or to facilitate the interpretation of results. On the qualitative side a conceptual framework might be used to provide the right kinds of descriptions at different stages of the research process; to identify or explore categories of analysis; or to guide and refine the conclusions drawn by a study. All of these things can happen in a single project! Given the importance and centrality of these frameworks, it might be surprising to learn that relatively little has been written about using them in research. There’s certainly a lot less published about this than research methods or methodology, for instance. (Though different methods often come with specific conceptual frameworks built in or with a more obvious alignment). So, to start making sense of all this we begin by looking at some of the papers that offer systematic guidance or understanding of the role of conceptual frameworks in research. As this guide progresses we’ll bring in perspectives from GO-GN members on their experiences with developing and using conceptual frameworks.

    • Whole-body metabolic homeostasis is tightly controlled by hormone-like factors with systemic or paracrine effects that are derived from nonendocrine organs, including adipose tissue (adipokines) and liver (hepatokines). Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a hormone-like protein, which is emerging as a major regulator of whole-body metabolism and has therapeutic potential for treating metabolic syndrome. However, the mechanisms that control FGF21 levels are not fully understood. Herein, we demonstrate that FGF21 production in the liver is regulated via a posttranscriptional network consisting of the CCR4–NOT deadenylase complex and RNA-binding protein tristetraprolin (TTP). In response to nutrient uptake, CCR4–NOT cooperates with TTP to degrade AU-rich mRNAs that encode pivotal metabolic regulators, including FGF21. Disruption of CCR4–NOT activity in the liver, by deletion of the catalytic subunit CNOT6L, increases serum FGF21 levels, which ameliorates diet-induced metabolic disorders and enhances energy expenditure without disrupting bone homeostasis. Taken together, our study describes a hepatic CCR4–NOT/FGF21 axis as a hitherto unrecognized systemic regulator of metabolism and suggests that hepatic CCR4–NOT may serve as a target for devising therapeutic strategies in metabolic syndrome and related morbidities.

  • The GBAR antimatter gravity experiment

    • The GBAR project (Gravitational Behaviour of Anti hydrogen at Rest) at CERN, aims to measure the free fall acceleration of ultracold neutral anti hydrogen atoms in the terrestrial gravitational field. The experiment consists preparing anti hydrogen ions (one antiproton and two positrons) and sympathetically cooling them with Be (+) ions to less than 10 mu K. The ultracold ions will then be photo-ionized just above threshold, and the free fall time over a known distance measured. We will describe the project, the accuracy that can be reached by standard techniques, and discuss a possible improvement to reduce the vertical velocity spread.
