  • Two-tone PLL for on-chip IP3 test
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of IEEEInternational Symposium on Circuits and Systems, (ISCAS 10). - : IEEE. - 9781424453085 ; , s. 3549-3552
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses a built-in-self-test (BiST) to characterize IP3 linearity of a RF receiver front-end. A two-tone stimulus is generated by a phase-lock loop (PLL) in GHz frequency range. The PLL is designed to keep the frequency difference between the two tones under control and in this way to avoid a possible injection-locking. One of the oscillation frequencies and the difference (beat) frequency can be externally controlled. According to the test requirements the phase noise and nonlinear distortion of the two-tone generator are considered as a merit for the VCO and analog adder design. A highly linear analog adder with output referred IP3 of more than +15 dBm is used to generate the RF stimulus. The two-tone power across 50 Ω receiver input impedance can be more than -25 dBm with very low intermodulation distortion of PIM3 = -75 dBc. The receiver performance is not affected significantly by the test set-up. Simulations for linearity and noise performance of the PLL designed in 65nm CMOS show sufficient potential for on-chip IP3 measurements in the GHz frequency range.

  • Estimation of the Severeness Rate, Death Rate, Household Attack Rate and the Total Number of COVID-19 Cases Based on 16 115 Polish Surveillance Records
  • 2020
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Estimating the actual number of COVID-19 infections is crucial for steering through the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. It is, however, notoriously difficult, as many cases have no or only mild symptoms. Surveillance data for in-household secondary infections offers unbiased samples for COVID-19 prevalence estimation. Methods: We analyse 16 115 Polish surveillance records to obtain key figures of the COVID-19 pandemic. We propose conservative upper and lower bound estimators for the number of SARS-CoV-2 infections. Further, we estimate age-dependent bounds on the severe case rate, death rate, and the in-household attack rate. Results: By maximum likelihood estimates, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Poland as of July 22nd, 2020, is at most around 13 times larger and at least 1.6 times larger than the recorded number. The lower bound on the severeness rate ranges between 0.2% for the 0–39 year-old to 5.7% for older than 80, while the upper bound is between 2.6% and 34.1%. The lower bound on the death rate is between 0.04% for the age group 40–59 to 1.34% for the oldest. Overall, the severeness and death rates grow exponentially with age. The in-household attack ratio is 8.18% for the youngest group and 16.88% for the oldest. Conclusions: The proposed approach derives highly relevant figures on the COVID-19 pandemic from routine surveillance data, under assumption that household members of detected infected are tested and all severe cases are diagnosed.

  • The coevolution of endogenous knowledge networks and knowledge creation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-2681. ; 145, s. 424-434
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Knowledge creation is increasingly a collaborative process, but empirical studies provide conflicting evidence on whether the relation between knowledge creation and number of collaborators is positive, negative, or nonexistent. The simulation model developed in this paper offers a deeper formal theoretical understanding and analyzes the feedback between the processes of knowledge creation and network collaboration. The model is formed by two functions, one for the formation of the network and another for the creation of knowledge, that suffice to reproduce the three coevolution scenarios described in the empirical literature. Due to the feedback mechanisms between the two functions, changes in one of the parameters deeply affect the outcome of the model, both in the amount of knowledge produced and the structure of the resulting network, as well as in the relation between them. Analyses of collaborative knowledge creation would benefit from taking into account this feedback. (C) 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

  • Methane emission bursts from permafrost environments during autumn freeze-in: New insights from ground-penetrating radar
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - 1944-8007. ; 42:16, s. 6732-6738
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Large amounts of methane (CH4) are known to be emitted from permafrost environments during the autumn freeze-in, but the specific soil conditions leading up to these bursts are unclear. Therefore, we used an ultrawide band ground-penetrating radar in Northeast Greenland in autumn 2009 to estimate the volumetric composition inside the soil through dielectric characterization from 200 to 3200 MHz. Our results suggest a compression of the gas reservoir during the phase transition of soil water, which is accompanied by a peak in surface CH4 emissions. About 1 week thereafter, there seems to be a decompression event, consistent with ground cracking which allows the gas reservoir to expand again. This coincides with the largest CH4 emission, exceeding the summer maximum by a factor of 4. We argue that these complementary measurement techniques are needed to come to an understanding of tundra CH4 bursts connected to soil freezing.

  • Aesthetic evaluation in subjects treated due to congenitally missing maxillary laterals. A comparison of perception in patients, parents and dentists
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Swedish Dental Journal. ; 34, s. 177-186
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The treatment of the congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisor is a challenge to the dental profession. The demand for optimal orthodontic and prosthetic treatment is high because the condition has an impact on facial aesthetic. The aims of the present study were to determine how different outcome of treatment were perceived by professionals and laypeople and to identify situations that caused dissatisfaction or satisfaction after space closure or tooth replacement. A panel of four groups (patients with missing laterals, parents to these subjects, patients with other malocclusion and general dental practitioners) were included. Sixteen cases with uni- or bilateral missing maxillary lateral incisors, treated with space closure or with prosthetic replacements were presented photographically to the panel. The prosthetic replacements included resin-bonded bridges, porcelain bonded to gold bridges and implants. The panel was asked to rate the overall appearance of the mouth, to rank up to three disturbing features and to rank the most important treatment goals in case of treatment need. An obvious difference between the panel groups was found. The general practitioners were less critical than laypeople in rating the overall appearance. Amongst dentists the tooth colour, the tooth shape and asymmetry were the most disturbing factors whilst laypeople were disturbed by colour, spacing and tooth shape. Half of the dentists did not find any treatment need whilst the corresponding figure amongst laypeople was 19 per cent. When a treatment need was confirmed the most common treatment goals amongst dentists were to change the colour or the shape of the teeth. The laypeople wanted to change the colour, the space condition or the shape of the teeth. The study has shown that professionals and laypeople are of different opinion when rating treatment outcome in cases with missing maxillary laterals. Careful planning to achieve optimal aesthetics should be performed.

  • Circulating Lipoprotein Lipids, Apolipoproteins and Ischemic Stroke.
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Annals of Neurology. - : Wiley. - 0364-5134 .- 1531-8249. ; 88:6, s. 1229-1236
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: We conducted a Mendelian randomization (MR) study to disentangle the comparative effects of lipids and apolipoproteins on ischemic stroke.METHODS: Single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with low- and high-density lipoprotein (LDL and HDL) cholesterol, triglycerides, and apolipoprotein A-I and B (apoA-I and apoB) at the level of genomewide significance (p < 5 × 10-8 ) in the UK Biobank were used as instrumental variables. Summary-level data for ischemic stroke and its subtypes were obtained from the MEGASTROKE consortium with 514,791 individuals (60,341 ischemic stroke cases, and 454,450 non-cases).RESULTS: Increased levels of apoB, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides were associated with higher risk of any ischemic stroke, large artery stroke, and small vessel stroke in the main and sensitivity univariable MR analyses. In multivariable MR analysis including apoB, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides in the same model, apoB retained a robust effect (p < 0.05), whereas the estimate for LDL cholesterol was reversed, and that for triglycerides largely attenuated. Decreased levels of apoA-I and HDL cholesterol were robustly associated with increased risk of any ischemic stroke, large artery stroke, and small vessel stroke in all univariable MR analyses, but the association for apoA-I was attenuated to the null after mutual adjustment.INTERPRETATION: The present MR study reveals that apoB is the predominant trait that accounts for the etiological basis of apoB, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides in relation to ischemic stroke, in particular large artery and small vessel stroke. Whether HDL cholesterol exerts a protective effect on ischemic stroke independent of apoA-I needs further investigation. ANN NEUROL 2020;88:1229-1236.

    • This RCT study aimed to investigate if VIS-Ed (Visualization through Imaging and Simulation - Education) had the potential to improve medical student education and specialist training in clinical diagnosis and treatment of trauma patients. The participants' general opinion was reported as high in both groups (lecture vs. virtual patient (VP)). Face validity of the VIS-Ed for cervical spine trauma was demonstrated and the VP group reported higher stimulation and engagement compared to the lecture group. No significant difference in the knowledge test between both groups could be observed, confirming our null hypothesis that VIS-Ed was on par with a lecture.

  • Modeling lean maintenance metric using incidence matrix approach
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Systems Assurance Engineering and Management. - : Springer. - 0975-6809 .- 0976-4348. ; 8:4, s. 799-816
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lean Maintenance (LM) enhances organizational profitability by identifying and eliminating maintenance related wastes. There exists no singular metric that measures maintenance related wastes. The paper identifies the LM features and models them using incidence-matrix. LM features are represented by diagonal elements, while its off-diagonal elements represent mutual influences among the LM features. The maintenance system leanness is quantified using the permanent of the matrix. The metric of leanness is proposed to be defined as Lean maintenance index (LMI) and is a ratio of the actual to the ideal values of permanent of actual and ideal maintenance system matrices. A high value of LMI indicates that the maintenance system is operating in a reduced waste scenario with respect to its resources. Among all the LM features, LMI was found to be most sensitive to management support including organizational processes. The results of the methodology are a good guide for managers. The shortcoming of the methodology is that, it relies on values and weights of the inter-relations among the features, which may not be necessarily true and may need further scientific rigor. The proposed methodology of using LMI as a singular metric to judge maintenance efficacy is expected to aid the operation managers in quantifying the maintenance leanness and may help them focus their efforts appropriately. There is no evidence to indicate existence of comprehensive list of LM features that culminate into a singular metric of maintenance productivity. This paper attempts to fill this gap.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Maintenance, Monitoring, Safety, Risk and Resilience of Bridges and Bridge Networks - Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Bridge Maintenance, Safety and Management, IABMAS 2016. - 9781498777032 ; , s. 1335-1342
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the past four decades, fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) have been increasingly used for strengthening, repair and refurbishment of bridges. Although, the short-term behavior of FRP/steel bonded joints has been extensively studied, the subject of the durability has not been researched to the same degree. The lack of knowledge regarding the long-term performance presents a major obstacle to the growing application of FRPs in bridges. This work aims to investigate the effects of temperature, de-icing salt solutions and moisture on mechanical behavior of Carbon-FRP/steel joints. To realize this aim, forty CFRP/steel double lap shear specimens were aged in simulated de-icing salt solution and deionized water at 20°C and 45°C for up to eighteen months. The test results indicate a clear change of failure mode from cohesive to interfacial or interlaminar failure. Even though all the joints exhibited increasing load-bearing capacity during the first six months, the failure load of specimens aged at higher temperatures started to decline afterwards.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Strengthening, repair and retrofit of existing bridges using adhesively bonded fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) composites have attracted a great deal of attention over the past four decades. Despite numerous studies that have been conducted to evaluate the short-term behaviour of FRPs bonded to steel members, the subject of durability is by far less researched. To date, concerns about the long-term performance presents a major obstacle to the widespread application of FRPs in steel bridges. The aim of this work is to identify the most damaging environmental factors and to experimentally investigate the effects of them on mechanical behaviour of Carbon-FRP/steel joints. In this regards, after a review of the literature, both bulk material and bonded specimens were exposed to a number of aging scenarios and tested. The results indicate the deleterious effects of de-icing salts on joint strength by degrading the interlaminar shear strength of FRPs.

  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 11th IFAC Symposium on System Identification. - 0080425925 ; , s. 1125-1130
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • So called subspace methods for direct identification of linear state space models form a very useful alternative to maximum-likelihood type approaches, inthat they are non-iterative and offer efficient numerical implementations. The algorithms consist of series of quite complex projections, and it is not so easy to intuitively understand how they work. The asymptotic analysis of them is also complicated. This contribution describes an interpretation of how they work in terms of k-step ahead predictors of carefully chosen orders. It specifically deals how consistent estimates of the dynamics can be achieved, even though correct predictors are not used. This analysis gives some new angles of attack to the problem of asymptotic behavior ofthe subspace algorithms.

Collectively the papers draw attention to aspects of embodiment which are not always centre stage in other debates, particularly issues of bodily vulnerability. They make clear, in considering the relation of bodies and selves, that more is at stake than social identity categories; but that what is at stake is, nonetheless, an inter-subjective making of the self. Utilizing theoretical and biographical material, key strands of contemporary thought are brought into conversation: the new materialism, poststructuralism and, importantly, phenomenology. The consequences for an embodied ethics and a corporeal political theory are considered. There is a substantial and accessible introduction placing the papers in the context of contemporary debates. Collectively, the volume marks a major development in philosophical and critical accounts of embodiment.

  • Electrochemical detection of trace metals: from traditional techniques to new ultrathin membrane electrodes
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Accurate detection of trace metals in environmental waters is an analytical challenge that is still open for the time being. The current state of the field reveals the predominance of the so-called hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE) for multi-metal detection by means of anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) readout. Being aware of the high toxicity of mercury and the high risk of a serious environmental footprint when water measurements are performed with the HMDE, in the past years, the electrochemistry field has rapidly moved towards the provision of tangible alternatives. Yet, none of the proposed methodologies has reached appropriate maturation and/or analytical features to substitute the use of the HMDE in the detection of trace metal ions in water. The investigations presented in this thesis are framed within the direction of new analytical strategies for the detection of trace metals in water, with special focus on the silver ion (Ag+). Voltammetric ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) with a working mechanism conceived on the basis of interconnected charge-transfer (CT) and ion-transfer (IT) processes are selected for such purpose due to their unique characteristics towards decentralized measurements. The first chapter of the thesis aims to provide a general background about electrochemistry measurements of ions, providing special attention to all-solid-state voltammetric ISEs based on ultrathin membranes that provide the CT–IT mechanism. Fundaments about ASV and the use of the HMDE for trace metal detection are also revised. Of particular interest is the case of Ag+ determination, which is not fully addressed with the HMDE. Accordingly, the state-of-the-art of electrochemical analysis of trace Ag+ has been established (Paper I).The second chapter shows the experimental details and the third chapter presents and discusses all the results obtained in this thesis. The first section is about a new analytical strategy for nanomolar detection of Ag+ in waters by coupling a silver-selective electrode (AgSE) based on a CT–IT mechanism with IT stripping voltammetry readout (Paper II). Specifically, the IT occurs via providing the CT process in electrodes that are modified with a redox-active conductive polymer and an ultrathin silver-selective membrane placed on top. Thus, the CT–IT tandem in voltammetric ISEs is unprecedently demonstrated for the detection of Ag+ in different water samples. The second section is based on the improvement of the limit of detection of the developed AgSE to detect sub-nanomolar concentration of Ag+ even in the presence of high interference levels, e.g., sodium ion (Paper III). Through the reduction of the total ion-exchange capacity of the ultrathin membrane, it is possible to increase the effectiveness towards the intake of Ag+ versus sodium ions (Na+) when IT stripping voltammetry is applied. The resulting ISE displayed a limit of detection of 0.05 nM, with a linear range of response up to 10 nM and is successfully applied for the analysis of Ag+ in several water samples, including seawater. The third section presents the investigation of the HMDE for multi-metal detection at trace levels in soil waters while establishing the fundaments, features and controversies of the technique (Paper IV). The entire replacement of the HMDE will only occur when multi-metal trace detection is provided by a sole electrode or an electrode array able to provide similar analytical characteristics, which are collected in this thesis, while avoiding the use of mercury or any other pollutant in the electrode manufacturing. The fourth section inquiries the possibility of using voltammetric ISE based on interconnected CT–IT processes for other trace metals, in particular lead and copper ions (Pb2+ and Cu2+) (Paper V). Despite more work being necessary in that direction, preliminary insights have revealed the potential of the CT–IT technique developed in this thesis towards multi-metal detection either with the incorporation in the membrane of multiple ionophores with different selectivity profiles for each metal or with a multi-sensor array. Accordingly, the research work presented in this thesis has a strong potential towards future investigations in this direction.

  • Effect of Normal Aging on Emotional Processing and Impact of Emotion on Memory : Psychophysiological and Cognitive Findings
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • It has long been thought that aging is accompanied by an emotional flattening. Although a different view has started to emerge recently, studies investigating psychophysiological responses in reaction to affective stimuli so far have reported an age-related reduction of the affective response. One of the main goals of this thesis was to revisit this issue by examining subjective reports, phasic heart rate, skin conductance (SCR) and facial electromyography (EMG) in response to a set of neutral and emotional pictures in a group of middle-aged participants (40-55 yrs), as compared with a group of older participants (56-78 yrs). A second main goal was to examine the effect of emotion on memory recollection and familiarity, using a Process Dissociation Procedure (PDP; Jacoby, 1991). In paper I, heart rate changes and reports of emotional experiences when viewing pictures were analysed in middle-aged and older participants. Consistent with previous findings, the results showed a clear differentiation of the heart rate changes as a function of time and picture type. Specifically, aversive pictures gave rise to the steepest initial heart rate deceleration and positive pictures elicited the greatest mid-interval acceleration, the latter being observed only in older participants. Parallel to this finding, older persons rated the positive pictures as being more pleasant than the younger did. The results were in agreement with other recent findings showing that older adults, preferentially pay attention to, and better retrieve positive information as compared with younger. Paper II reported the effects of age and gender on subjective reports, SCR and facial EMG. The effect of gender on subjective reports and psychophysiological measures was consistent with previous studies. No effect of age was found; the response magnitude for affective pictures was of similar size as that of younger adults. However, the gender differences on SCR and facial corrugator electromyography were absent in the group of older persons. The general conclusion that emerged from these two studies is that aging is not associated with a general decline of the emotional response. Nevertheless, the present results indicate that gender-related differences are attenuated in older individuals. Paper III examined the effects of emotion on recollection and familiarity, using a PDP implemented by a list discrimination task. The results revealed a detrimental effect of emotion on recollection process but not on familiarity. The finding was interpreted in the light of the trade-off hypothesis, predicting a memory enhancement of emotion for central information and a compromised effect for irrelevant or background details.
