  • Low-lying electric dipole gamma-continuum for the unstable Fe-62,64 nuclei : Strength evolution with neutron number
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : ELSEVIER. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 811
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The gamma-ray emission from the nuclei Fe-62,Fe-64 following Coulomb excitation at bombarding energy of 400-440 AMeV was measured with special focus on E1 transitions in the energy region 4-8 MeV. The unstable neutron-rich nuclei Fe-62,Fe-64 were produced at the FAIR-GSI laboratories and selected with the FRS spectrometer. The gamma decay was detected with AGATA. From the measured gamma-ray spectra the summed E1 strength is extracted and compared to microscopic quasi-particle phonon model calculations. The trend of the E1 strength with increasing neutron number is found to be fairly well reproduced with calculations that assume a rather complex structure of the 1(-) states (three-phonon states) inducing a strong fragmentation of the E1 nuclear response below the neutron binding energy.

  • Polarization selection in Mössbauer reflectivity for magnetic multilayer investigation
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: VII Euro-Asian Symposium on Trends In Magnetism. - : IOP Publishing.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mossbauer reflectivity experiment with polarization selection are reported. The use of the LiF polarization analyzer allows us to get the pi ->sigma' peak on the reflectivity curve at the critical angle and Mossbauer pi ->sigma' reflectivity spectra of reasonable quality at the critical angle and also at the Bragg angles of superlattice. The impressive difference of the reflectivity spectra measured near the critical angle with and without polarizations analysis is observed for [Fe-57(10)/V-10](20) multilayer characterizing by the ferromagnetic interlayer coupling. The combined fit of the whole set of spectra measured at different angles reveals the existence of antiferromagnetic Fe oxide phases in the top three bilayers. The experiment demonstrates benefits of the Mossbauer reflectivity with polarization analysis in ultrathin surface layer investigations.

  • Study of the conditions for the effective initiation of plasma-chemical treatment of flue gas under the influence of a pulsed electron beam
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Laser and particle beams (Print). - : CAMBRIDGE UNIV PRESS. - 0263-0346 .- 1469-803X. ; 38:3, s. 197-203
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the results of comprehensive studies of the efficiency of a pulsed electron beam transmission through a mixture of gases: nitrogen (83%), carbon dioxide (14%), and oxygen (2.6%) in the presence of ash and water vapor. The studied concentrations correspond to the concentrations of nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide in flue gas. The pressure and concentration of water vapor and ash in the drift chamber varied (375, 560, and 750 Torr; humidity 15 +/- 5% and 50 +/- 15%). The charge dissipation of a pulsed electron beam in the gas mixture in the presence of ash and water vapor was investigated, as well as the effect of the concentration of water vapor and ash on the geometric profile of the pulsed electron beam.

  • Synchronous genetic turnovers across Western Eurasia in Late Pleistocene collared lemmings
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Global Change Biology. - : Wiley. - 1354-1013 .- 1365-2486. ; 22:5, s. 1710-1721
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent palaeogenetic studies indicate a highly dynamic history in collared lemmings (Dicrostonyx spp.), with several demographical changes linked to climatic fluctuations that took place during the last glaciation. At the western range margin of D.torquatus, these changes were characterized by a series of local extinctions and recolonizations. However, it is unclear whether this pattern represents a local phenomenon, possibly driven by ecological edge effects, or a global phenomenon that took place across large geographical scales. To address this, we explored the palaeogenetic history of the collared lemming using a next-generation sequencing approach for pooled mitochondrial DNA amplicons. Sequences were obtained from over 300 fossil remains sampled across Eurasia and two sites in North America. We identified five mitochondrial lineages of D.torquatus that succeeded each other through time across Europe and western Russia, indicating a history of repeated population extinctions and recolonizations, most likely from eastern Russia, during the last 50000years. The observation of repeated extinctions across such a vast geographical range indicates large-scale changes in the steppe-tundra environment in western Eurasia during the last glaciation. AllHolocene samples, from across the species' entire range, belonged to only one of the five mitochondrial lineages. Thus, extant D.torquatus populations only harbour a small fraction of the total genetic diversity that existed across different stages of the Late Pleistocene. In North American samples, haplotypes belonging to both D.groenlandicus and D.richardsoni were recovered from a Late Pleistocene site in south-western Canada. This suggests that D.groenlandicus had a more southern and D.richardsoni a more northern glacial distribution than previously thought. This study provides significant insights into the population dynamics of a small mammal at a large geographical scale and reveals a rather complex demographical history, which could have had bottom-up effects in the Late Pleistocene steppe-tundra ecosystem.

  • The ultimate challenge or just common sense : The present practices and future opportunities to increase the utilization of livestock manure as organic fertilizer in North West Russia
  • 2017
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The ultimate challenge or just common senseThe present practices and future opportunities to increase the utilization of livestock manure as organic fertilizer in North West RussiaThe risk of nutrient contamination of surface- and groundwater’s from livestock farming has been one of the issues to address in international cooperation initiatives in the Baltic Sea Region during the recent decade. In particular, international initiatives targeting North West Russia in the 2000-2010’s by HELCOM and NEFCO and as bilateral cooperation with Russia by Finland and Sweden have assessed the severity of the threat, have introduced technical solutions to process livestock manure and have explored the market potential for fertilizer products made through processing of livestock manure. However, a comprehensive resolution to the growing problem still remains a long term goal and many of the barriers to increase manure processing and organic fertilization – poor economic incentives and lack of proven cost-efficient technologies – still prevail. In Russia, ongoing adaptation of state support to agriculture as part of the WTO membership brings about indirect area-based farm support and increased share of support to investments in farm infrastructure, rural development and in management of health, hygienic and environmental aspects. These represent positive opportunities for increasing sustainable manure management and the proportion of manure-based fertilization. The Technological Regulations (TR) instrument introduced in 2008, enhanced enforcement and systematic introduction of BAT in Russian agriculture, provide a set of management tools which has good potential to be effective for the administration and be accepted by the agricultural companies. At the same time, there is a risk that the increasing concentration of livestock, in particular poultry production in Leningrad Oblast narrows alternative paths for sustainable manure management and is leading to a situation in which only large scale technological solutions may prove to be viable in order to solve the issue on the regional scale. This report reviews the current environment in North West Russian Federation to advance sustainable animal manure management and reflects this against the EU context with related examples from Latvia. The report concludes that a sustainable future for North West Russian agriculture relies on the overall sustainability of the enterprises and that regulative and subsidy measures should reinforce the positive link between economic and environmental benefit. Spatial aspects on the territorial level should beaddressed as the location of agricultural enterprises both relative to each other and relative to human settlements have increasing importance from the perspective of environmental, health and biosecurity implications. Thirdly, Russia’s adaptation to the WTO framework, the process of implementing BAT in agriculture and the TR instrument to support holistic farm specific solutions provide a range of interesting topics for future international cooperation on both technical and policy levels.

  • Multiple indicators of human impacts on the environment in the Pechora Basin, north-eastern European Russia
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Ecological Indicators. - : Elsevier BV. - 1470-160X .- 1872-7034. ; 9:4, s. 765-779
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Pechora Region (PR) has extensive natural resources supporting forestry, oil and gas industries. The objective of this integrated study was to identify if local and long range pollution and biodiversity impacts were detectable on a regional scale using multi-indicators by selecting paired sites, close to industrial/forestry activities and in 'reference' areas (remote from any industrial centers, settlements or commercial activities). Chemistry of lichens, topsoil, lake water and sediments, plus diversity of lichens, birds and aquatic indicators along with landscape analysis were measured at eight sites in the PR to assess local impacts of oil/gas and forestry operations. Furthermore, an analysis of water and sediment chemistry was made at river stations and sites within the Pechora Delta. Local areas around industrial towns of Vorkuta and Usinsk showed increased pollution and decreased biodiversity. Among remote areas, subtle changes in pollution and biodiversity were detected close to oil/gas operations on the Kolva and Ortina Rivers, indicating early signs of environmental impact. Delta analyses showed limited impacts and most other sites remained unmodified reflecting low ecological impacts. Changes in forest landscape structure over large areas were apparently too small to cause significant negative impacts on bird diversity. This was the first attempt showing how multi-indicators can be used over broad spatial scales to assess environmental impacts in the PR.
