    • Background: Optimal therapeutic management of intravascular lymphoma (IVL) lacks precise guidelines. Patients and methods: The clinico-pathological features of 38 HIV-negative patients with IVL were reviewed to define efficacy of chemotherapy in these malignancies. Clinical characteristics of 22 patients treated with chemotherapy and of 16 untreated patients were compared in order to understand better the impact and causes of potential patient selection. Results: Median age was 70 years (range 34-90), with a male/female ratio of 0.9; 23 (61%) patients had Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG-PS) >1;21 (55%) had systemic symptoms. Cutaneous lesions and anemia were significantly more common among patients treated with chemotherapy; central nervous system (CNS) and renal involvement were significantly more common among untreated patients. Chemotherapy was associated with a response rate of 59% and a 3-year overall survival of 33 +/- 11%. Five of six patients with CNS involvement received chemotherapy: four of them died early; only one patient, treated with adriamycin, cyclophosphamide, vincristine, methotrexate, bleomycin and prednisolone (MACOP-B) followed by high-dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT), was alive at 19 months. High-dose chemotherapy supported by ASCT was indicated at diagnosis in another patient (43 years of age, stage 1), who was alive at 71 months, and at relapse after cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisone (CHOP) in two patients who died early after transplantation. PS less than or equal to 1, disease limited to the skin, stage 1, and use of chemotherapy were independently associated with better outcome. Conclusions: Anthracycline-based chemotherapy is the standard treatment for IVL. However, survival is disappointing, with a relevant impact of diagnostic delay and lethal complications. More intensive combinations, containing drugs with higher CNS bioavailability, are needed in cases with brain involvement, and the role of high-dose chemotherapy supported by ASCT should be further investigated in younger patients with unfavorable features.

    • The first section of the bone marrow workshop of the European Association of Haematopathology 2020 Virtual Meeting was dedicated to pediatric myeloid neoplasms. The section covered the whole spectrum of myeloid neoplasms, including myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms (MDS/MPN), and acute myeloid leukemia. The workshop cases are hereby presented, preceded by an introduction on these overall rare diseases in this age group. Very rare entities such as primary myelofibrosis, pediatric MDS with fibrosis, and MDS/MPN with JMML-like features and t(4;17)(q12;q21); FIP1L1::RARA fusion, are described in more detail.

    • In this work we report the preparation and structural characterization of tin oxide nanowires as functional materials for the development of chemical sensors. Aspects of material preparation relevant for gas sensing applications, such as the control of the wire diameter, are emphasized. The functional characterization is focused on the detection of Chemical Warfare Agents (CWAs) simulants, with particular regard to poisoning effects induced by dimethyl methyl phosphonate (DMMP), a simulant for Sarin nerve agent. Tin oxide thin films, prepared by means of rheotaxial growth and thermal oxidation (RGTO) technique, are used as reference to better compare the performance of nanowires with thin films traditionally used in gas sensing field. © 2009 Elsevier B.V.     • One of the most promising architectures of third generation solar cells is integration of single crystalline nanowires as electron transporters in anodes of electrochemical cells.[1-3] The nanowire-based cells aim at significantly increase cell efficiency thanks to the higher mobility of electrons along the single crystalline lattice of the nanowires with respect to traditional polycrystalline networks, greatly reducing electron-hole recombination controllable by passivation, functionalization or coaxial coating of the nanowire. The nanonetworks have been integrated in DSCs using the traditional N719 dye and the I-3/I-3 redox couple. The functional properties of the cells under 1 sun irradiation have been compared with traditional polycrystalline TiO2 photoanodes. ©2009 IEEE.

    • TiO 2 and Nb-doped TiO 2 nanotubes were obtained on flexible polymeric substrates (Kapton HN) and alumina with high roughness (alumina substrate with granular surface). Nanotubes were prepared by electrochemical anodization of a Ti thick film. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to investigate the morphology of the structures and the roughness of the substrates. The functional properties of tubular arrays obtained on flexible and rough substrates were investigated towards two applications, namely, chemoresistive gas sensors and flexible dye sensitized solar cells. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.     • Quasi one-dimensional nanostructures of semiconducting metal oxides are promising for the development of nano-devices. Tin, indium, and zinc oxides were produced in form of single-crystalline nanowires through condensation from vapor phase. Such a growth occurs in controlled thermodynamical condition and size reduction effects on the electrical and optical response to gases have been exploited. Preparation, microstructural, and electrical characterization of nanowires are presented and the peculiarities of these innovative structures are highlighted. © 2006 Elsevier B.V.
