    • Pharmacists are trusted health professionals. Many patients use over-the-counter (OTC) medications and are seen by pharmacists who are the initial point of contact of allergic rhinitis management in most countries. The role of pharmacists in integrated care pathways (ICPs) for allergic diseases is important. This paper builds on existing studies and provides tools intended to help pharmacists provide optimal advice/interventions/strategies to patients with rhinitis. The ARIA-pharmacy ICP includes a diagnostic questionnaire specifically focusing attention on key symptoms and markers of the disease, a systematic Diagnosis Guide (including differential diagnoses) and a simple flowchart with proposed treatment for rhinitis and asthma multimorbidity. Key prompts for referral within the ICP are included. The use of technology is critical to enhance the management of AR. However, the ARIA-pharmacy ICP should be adapted to local health care environments/situations as regional (national) differences exist in pharmacy care.

  • Long-lived connection between southern Siberia and northern Laurentia in the Proterozoic

    • Precambrian supercontinents Nuna-Columbia (1.7 to 1.3 billion years ago) and Rodinia (1.1 to 0.7 billion years ago) have been proposed. However, the arrangements of crustal blocks within these supercontinents are poorly known. Huge, dominantly basaltic magmatic outpourings and intrusions, covering up to millions of square kilometres, termed Large Igneous Provinces, typically accompany (super) continent breakup, or attempted breakup and offer an important tool for reconstructing supercontinents. Here we focus on the Large Igneous Province record for Siberia and Laurentia, whose relative position in Nuna-Columbia and Rodinia reconstructions is highly controversial. We present precise geochronology - nine U-Pb and six Ar-Ar ages - on dolerite dykes and sills, along with existing dates from the literature, that constrain the timing of emplacement of Large Igneous Province magmatism in southern Siberia and northern Laurentia between 1,900 and 720 million years ago. We identify four robust age matches between the continents 1,870, 1,750, 1,350 and 720 million years ago, as well as several additional approximate age correlations that indicate southern Siberia and northern Laurentia were probably near neighbours for this 1.2-billion-year interval. Our reconstructions provide a framework for evaluating the shared geological, tectonic and metallogenic histories of these continental blocks.

  • Return to Rodinia? Moderate to high palaeolatitude of the São Francisco/Congo craton at 920 Ma

    • Moderate to high palaeolatitudes recorded in mafic dykes, exposed along the coast of Bahia, Brazil, are partly responsible for some interpretations that the São Francisco/Congo craton was separate from the low-latitude Rodinia supercontinent at about 1050 Ma. We report new palaeomagnetic data that replicate the previous results. However, we obtain substantially younger U-Pb baddeleyite ages from five dykes previously thought to be 1.02-1.01 Ga according to the 40Ar/39Ar method. Specifically, the so-called «A-normal» remanence direction from Salvador is dated at 924.2±3.8 Ma, within error of the age for the «C» remanence direction at 921.5±4.3 Ma. An «A-normal» dyke at Ilh»us is dated at 926.1±4.6 Ma, and two «A-normal» dykes at Olivença have indistinguishable ages with best estimate of emplacement at 918.2±6.7 Ma. We attribute the palaeomagnetic variance of the «A-normal» and «C» directions to lack of averaging of geomagnetic palaeosecular variation in some regions. Our results render previous 40Ar/39Ar ages from the dykes suspect, leaving late Mesoproterozoic palaeolatitudes of the São Francisco/Congo craton unconstrained. The combined «A-normal» palaeomagnetic pole from coastal Bahia places the São Francisco/Congo craton in moderate to high palaeolatitudes at c. 920 Ma, allowing various possible positions of that block within Rodinia.

    • The first significant buildup in atmospheric oxygen, the Great Oxidation Event (GOE), began in the early Paleoproterozoic in association with global glaciations and continued until the end of the Lomagundi carbon isotope excursion ca. 2,060 Ma. The exact timing of and relationships among these events are debated because of poor age constraints and contradictory stratigraphic correlations. Here, we show that the first Paleoproterozoic global glaciation and the onset of the GOE occurred between ca. 2,460 and 2,426 Ma, ∼100 My earlier than previously estimated, based on an age of 2,426 ± 3 Ma for Ongeluk Formation magmatism from the Kaapvaal Craton of southern Africa. This age helps define a key paleomagnetic pole that positions the Kaapvaal Craton at equatorial latitudes of 11° ± 6° at this time. Furthermore, the rise of atmospheric oxygen was not monotonic, but was instead characterized by oscillations, which together with climatic instabilities may have continued over the next ∼200 My until ≤2,250-2,240 Ma. Ongeluk Formation volcanism at ca. 2,426 Ma was part of a large igneous province (LIP) and represents a waning stage in the emplacement of several temporally discrete LIPs across a large low-latitude continental landmass. These LIPs played critical, albeit complex, roles in the rise of oxygen and in both initiating and terminating global glaciations. This series of events invites comparison with the Neoproterozoic oxygen increase and Sturtian Snowball Earth glaciation, which accompanied emplacement of LIPs across supercontinent Rodinia, also positioned at low latitude.

  • A European multicentre evaluation of detection and typing methods for human enteroviruses and parechoviruses using RNA transcripts

    • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection has become the gold standard for diagnosis and typing of enterovirus (EV) and human parechovirus (HPeV) infections. Its effectiveness depends critically on using the appropriate sample types and high assay sensitivity as viral loads in cerebrospinal fluid samples from meningitis and sepsis clinical presentation can be extremely low. This study evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of currently used commercial and in-house diagnostic and typing assays. Accurately quantified RNA transcript controls were distributed to 27 diagnostic and 12 reference laboratories in 17 European countries for blinded testing. Transcripts represented the four human EV species (EV-A71, echovirus 30, coxsackie A virus 21, and EV-D68), HPeV3, and specificity controls. Reported results from 48 in-house and 15 commercial assays showed 98% detection frequencies of high copy (1000 RNA copies/5 µL) transcripts. In-house assays showed significantly greater detection frequencies of the low copy (10 copies/5 µL) EV and HPeV transcripts (81% and 86%, respectively) compared with commercial assays (56%, 50%; P = 7 × 10−5). EV-specific PCRs showed low cross-reactivity with human rhinovirus C (3 of 42 tests) and infrequent positivity in the negative control (2 of 63 tests). Most or all high copy EV and HPeV controls were successfully typed (88%, 100%) by reference laboratories, but showed reduced effectiveness for low copy controls (41%, 67%). Stabilized RNA transcripts provide an effective, logistically simple and inexpensive reagent for evaluation of diagnostic assay performance. The study provides reassurance of the performance of the many in-house assay formats used across Europe. However, it identified often substantially reduced sensitivities of commercial assays often used as point-of-care tests.

    • Magmatism of the Povungnituk Group of the Cape Smith Belt, northern Superior craton, was formed in three stages: (i)early alkaline magmatism and associated carbonatites (undated), (ii) a main flood basalt sequence (Beauparlant Formation) (constrained between 2040 and 1991 Ma), and (iii) a late stage alkaline pulse (Cecilia Formation) (ca. 1959 Ma). We suggest that the main stage of magmatic activity (middle pulse) was of short duration. A new U–Pb baddeleyite age of 1998 ± 6 Ma is obtained from a dolerite sill intruding the uppermost section of the Beauparlant Formation. This age has regional significance because it matches the previously obtained 1998 ± 2 Ma age for the Watts Group (Purtuniq) ophiolite of the northern Cape Smith Belt and the 1998 ± 2 Ma U-Pb age of the Minto dykes intruding the craton to the south. These coeval units, along with additional units correlated on paleomagnetic grounds (Eskimo Formation), are interpreted to define a large igneous province (LIP), extending over an area of >400,000 km2, which we herein define as the Minto-Povungnituk LIP. Geochemical comparison between the Watts Group ophiolite, Minto dykes and the mafic Povungnituk Group shows significant differences allowing these data to be divided into two groups and domains within the LIP. A northern domain, comprising the Povungnituk and Watts groups, shows mixing between a depleted mantle source and a more enriched mantle plume-sourced melt. A southern domain comprising the Minto dykes and the paleomagnetically linked Eskimo Formation shows signs of an even more enriched source, while these magmas also show the effect of crustal contamination. Two distinct source mechanisms can be responsible for the observed geochemical differences between the two domains. First, a difference in lithospheric sources, where melting of different portions of Superior craton lithosphere caused the different melt signatures in the interior of the craton. In this case magmatism in the two domains is only related by having the same heat source (e.g.,a mantle plume) interpreted to be located on the northwestern side of the northern Superior craton. Second, two distinct deep mantle sources that remained separated within the ascending plume. This is analogous to some current hotspots interpreted to sample both large low shear velocity provinces (LLSVP) and adjacent ambient deep mantle. This latter interpretation would allow for the use of bilateral chemistry in LIPs as a potential tool for the recognition and mapping of the LLSVP boundaries throughout Earth's history.

    • Genotyping of important medical or veterinary prokaryotes has become a very important tool during the last decades. Rapid development of fragment-separation and sequencing technologies has made many new genotyping strategies possible. Among these new methods is multilocus variable-number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA). Here we present an update on the use of MLVA in eight European countries (Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden). Researchers in Europe have been active in developing and implementing a large array of different assays. MLVA has been used as a typing tool in several contexts, from aiding in resolving outbreaks of foodborne bacteria to typing organisms that may pose a bioterrorist threat, as well as in scientific studies.

    • This paper presents the cognitive test battery used in the CASCADE Study (Cardiovascular Determinants of Dementia) for examining the consequences of cerebral white matter lesions and atrophy. The test battery includes nine different tasks assessing memory, executive function, and global cognitive function. Three episodic memory tasks were used in combinations to assess the role of attention and speed on encoding. Estimates of short- and long-term memory capacity were also derived from these three memory tasks. Semantic memory production / frontal lobe functions were assessed by means of a word fluency test. The Letter Digit Substitution test and the Stroop test were used to assess speed of processing and attention. Motor speed was measured with the Purdue Pegboard test, and global cognitive function was assessed by the Mini Mental State Examination. Overall performance data for the whole CASCADE sample and for each of eight study centers are presented for each test. Possible reasons for performance differences among study centers are discussed.

    • The Archean basement in the northeastern part of the Kaapvaal craton is intruded by a large number of mafic dykes, defining three major dyke swarms, which collectively appear to fan out from the Bushveld Complex. Herein we present U-Pb baddeleyite ages for two of these dyke swarms, the northwest trending Badplaas Dyke Swarm and the east-west trending Rykoppies Dyke Swarm, and infer their correlation with tectonic events in the Kaapvaal craton. We also present a U-Pb baddeleyite age for a noritic phase of the Marginal Zone of the Rustenburg layered Suite (Bushveld Complex). The age of the Badplaas swarm is determined from two dolerites dated at 2965.9 +/- 0.7 Ma and 2967.0 +/- 1.1 Ma. These ages coincide with units of the Nsuze Group lavas (2967-2985 Ma), which constitute the world's oldest preserved rift basin, and suggest that dykes of this swarm are feeders to basaltic units of this group. Similarly, the E-W trending Rykoppies swarm has earlier been interpreted as a potential feeder system to the Bushveld Complex. However, the emplacement ages of six dolerites fall in the range 2.66-2.68 Ga, thus similar to 600 Myr earlier than the intrusion of the Bushveld Complex (herein dated at 2057.7 +/- 1.6 Ma). Rather, these ages coincide with the Allanridge Formation at the uppermost part of the Ventersdorp Supergroup as well as volcanic rocks of the "protobasinal" sequences preserved at the base of the overlying Transvaal Basin. The Rykoppies Dyke Swarm probably marks the initial stages of rifting of the Transvaal Basin and reflects a major shift from a NW-SE to an E-W trending tectonic setting. The origin of the Rykoppies Dyke Swarm can be linked either to prolonged mantle plume activity or to the onset of back-arc extension associated with south-directed subduction of oceanic lithosphere in a compressional setting along the northern margin of the Kaapvaal craton.     • The paper presents new geological, geochronological, geochemical and Nd-Sr isotopic data on the Meso- Neoproterozoic dolerites of the Siberian Craton. New U-Pb baddeleyite and apatite ages of a E-W-trending dyke and two sills from southeastern Siberia are 982 ± 11, 977 ± 7, 970 ± 31 and 972 ± 60 Ma, respectively, extending the area of distribution of the event by more than 100 km to the north. The Sette-Daban intrusions are subalkalic mostly low-Ti dolerites, although high-Ti dolerites have been locally documented as well. Trace element abundances in dolerites vary from typical to E-MORB to OIB with arc-like signatures represented by high Th/Yb and low TiO2/Yb ratios. All dolerite samples display moderately positive εNd(t) values varying from +3.3 to +7.7 and indicating the magmas were derived from a depleted mantle source. E-MORB and OIB intrusions are attributed to the different degree of interaction of magma between the depleted asthenospheric mantle and regions within the sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) that were metasomatically enriched during earlier subduction events. Available data on Sette-Daban event distribution, composition and duration satisfy the characteristics of a typical Large Igneous Province (LIP). Similar age 1000–950 Ma mafic magmatism is also recognized in the Baltic and Amazonian cratons and can be potentially correlated with the Sette-Daban event.

  • The Ahmeyim Great Dyke of Mauritania: A newly dated Archaean intrusion

    • A precise U-Pb baddeleyite age of 2733 +/- 2 Ma has been obtained for the Ahmeyim Great Dyke of Mauritania that intruded into the Tasiast-Tijirit Terrane of the Reguibat Shield, NW Mauritania. This dyke is approximately 1500 m wide at the sampling area and extends for more than 150 km NNE/SSW. Major and trace element geochemistry of the dyke indicates that the magmas that formed this intrusive body were sub-alkaline, tholeiitic and boninitic, and the presence of a negative Nb anomaly indicates the involvement of subducted oceanic lithosphere during magma genesis, most likely an inherited signature from earlier subduction events and the Mesoarchaean collision of the Tasiast-Tijirit and Choum-Rag el Abiod Terranes. A palaeomagnetic study was also undertaken on samples collected from two different sections across the dyke. However, no within- or inter-site grouping of any palaeomagnetic directions could be identified, thus precluding any palaeographic interpretation. The Ahmeyim Great Dyke is interpreted to be part of the feeder system for a 2733 Ma Large Igneous Province (LIP); tholeiitic-komatiitic greenstone belts of this age are absent in the West African Craton (WAC) but are present on many other blocks. However, additional constraints are required to reliably link the Ahmeyim Great Dyke with any other such LIP-type greenstone belts in late Archaean supercontinent reconstructions. The magmas that formed the Ahmeyim Great Dyke were boninitic; this, combined with evidence of crustal contamination, the scale of the dyke and its potential link (as a feeder) to greenstone belts of tholeiitic-komatiitic affiliation within other crustal blocks suggests that it, and cogenetic magmatic units elsewhere, may be prospective for magmatic Ni-Cu-PGE sulphide exploration.   • Long-term follow-up of the SBG 9401 study comparing tailored FEC-based therapy versus marrow-supported high-dose therapy

    • Background: The purpose was to investigate adjuvant marrow-supportive high-dose chemotherapy compared with an equitoxicity-tailored comparator arm. Patients and methods: Five hundred and twenty-five women below theage of 60 years with operated high-risk primary breast cancer were randomised to nine cycles of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor supported and individually tailored FEC (5-fluorouracil, epirubicin, cyclophosphamide), (n = 251) or standard FEC followed by marrow-supported high-dose therapy with CTCb (cyclophosphamide, thiotepa, carboplatin) therapy (n = 274), followed by locoregional radiotherapy and tamoxifen for 5 years. Results: There were 104 breast cancer relapses in the tailored FEC group versus 139 in the CTCb group (double triangular method by Whitehead, P = 0.046), with a median follow-up of all included patients of 60.8 months. The event-free survival demonstrated 121 and 150 events in the tailored FEC- and CTCb group, respectively [P = 0.074, hazard ratio (HR) 0.804, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.633-1.022]. Ten patients in the tailored FEC regimen developed acute myeloid leukaemia (AML)/myelodysplasia (MDS). One hundred deaths occurred in the tailored FEC group and 121 in the CTCb group (P = 0.287, HR 0.866, 95% CI 0.665-1.129). Conclusion: The update of this study shows an improved outcome linked to the tailored FEC treatment in relation to breast cancer relapse, but also an increased incidence of AML/MDS. © 2007 Oxford University Press.

  • Role of apolipoprotein C-III overproduction in diabetic dyslipidaemia

    • - Aims: To investigate how apolipoprotein C-III (apoC-III) metabolism is altered in subjects with type 2 diabetes, whether the perturbed plasma triglyceride concentrations in this condition are determined primarily by the secretion rate or the removal rate of apoC-III, and whether improvement of glycaemic control using the glucagon-like peptide-1 analogue liraglutide for 16 weeks modifies apoC-III dynamics. Materials and Methods: Postprandial apoC-III kinetics were assessed after a bolus injection of [5,5,5- 2 H 3 ]leucine using ultrasensitive mass spectrometry techniques. We compared apoC-III kinetics in two situations: in subjects with type 2 diabetes before and after liraglutide therapy, and in type 2 diabetic subjects with matched body mass index (BMI) non-diabetic subjects. Liver fat content, subcutaneous abdominal and intra-abdominal fat were determined using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Results: Improved glycaemic control by liraglutide therapy for 16 weeks significantly reduced apoC-III secretion rate (561 ± 198 vs. 652 ± 196 mg/d, P = 0.03) and apoC-III levels (10.0 ± 3.8 vs. 11.7 ± 4.3 mg/dL, P = 0.035) in subjects with type 2 diabetes. Change in apoC-III secretion rate was significantly associated with the improvement in indices of glucose control (r = 0.67; P = 0.009) and change in triglyceride area under the curve (r = 0.59; P = 0.025). In line with this, the apoC-III secretion rate was higher in subjects with type 2 diabetes compared with BMI-matched non-diabetic subjects (676 ± 208 vs. 505 ± 174 mg/d, P = 0.042). Conclusions: The results reveal that the secretion rate of apoC-III is associated with elevation of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins in subjects with type 2 diabetes, potentially through the influence of glucose homeostasis on the production of apoC-III. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons Ltd

    • Background: Digital development has caused rehabilitation services and rehabilitees to become increasingly interested in using technology as a part of rehabilitation. This study was based on a previously published study that categorized 4 groups of patients with cardiac disease based on different experiences and attitudes toward technology (e-usage groups): feeling outsider, being uninterested, reflecting benefit, and enthusiastic using. Objective: This study identifies differences in the biopsychosocial profiles of patients with cardiac disease in e-usage groups and deepen the understanding of these profiles in cardiac rehabilitation. Methods: Focus group interviews and measurements were conducted with 39 patients with coronary heart disease, and the mean age was 54.8 (SD 9.4, range 34-77) years. Quantitative data were gathered during a 12-month rehabilitation period. First, we used analysis of variance and Tukey honestly significant difference test, a t test, or nonparametric tests—Mann–Whitney and Kruskal–Wallis tests—to compare the 4 e-usage groups—feeling outsider, being uninterested, reflecting benefit, and enthusiastic using—in biopsychosocial variables. Second, we compared the results of the 4 e-groups in terms of recommended and reference values. This analysis contained 13 variables related to biomedical, psychological, and social functioning. Finally, we formed biopsychosocial profiles based on the integration of the findings by constant comparative analysis phases through classic grounded theory. Results: The biomedical variables were larger for waistline (mean difference [MD] 14.2; 95% CI 1.0-27.5; P=.03) and lower for physical fitness (MD −0.72; 95% CI −1.4 to −0.06; P=.03) in the being uninterested group than in the enthusiastic using group. The feeling outsider group had lower physical fitness (MD −55.8; 95% CI −110.7 to −0.92; P=.047) than the enthusiastic using group. For psychosocial variables, such as the degree of self-determination in exercise (MD −7.3; 95% CI −13.5 to −1.1; P=.02), the being uninterested group had lower values than the enthusiastic using group. Social variables such as performing guided tasks in the program (P=.03) and communicating via messages (P=.03) were lower in the feeling outsider group than in the enthusiastic using group. The feeling outsider and being uninterested groups had high-risk lifestyle behaviors, and adherence to the web-based program was low. In contrast, members of the being uninterested group were interested in tracking their physical activity. The reflecting benefit and enthusiastic using groups had low-risk lifestyle behavior and good adherence to web-based interventions; however, the enthusiastic using group had low self-efficacy in exercise. These profiles showed how individuals reflected their lifestyle risk factors differently. We renamed the 4 groups as building self-awareness, increasing engagement, maintaining a healthy lifestyle balance, and strengthening self-confidence. Conclusions: The results facilitate more effective and meaningful personalization guidance and inform the remote rehabilitation. Professionals can tailor individual web-based lifestyle risk interventions using these biopsychosocial profiles.

    • Eight different generations of dolerite dykes crosscutting the Paleoproterozoic basement in West Africa and one in South America were dated using the high precision U–Pb TIMS method on baddeleyite. Some of the individual dykes reach over 300 km in length and they are considered parts of much larger systems of mafic dyke swarms representing the plumbing systems for large igneous provinces (LIPs). The new U–Pb ages obtained for the investigated swarms in the southern West African Craton (WAC) are the following (oldest to youngest): 1791 ± 3 Ma for the N010° Libiri swarm, 1764 ± 4 Ma for the N035° Kédougou swarm, 1575 ± 5 for the N100° Korsimoro swarm, ~1525–1529 Ma for the N130° Essakane swarm, 1521 ± 3 Ma for the N90° Sambarabougou swarm, 915 ± 7 Ma for the N070° Oda swarm, 867 ± 16 Ma for the N355° Manso swarm, 202 ± 5 Ma and 198 ± 16 Ma for the N040° Hounde swarm, and 200 ± 3 Ma for the sills in the Taoudeni basin. The last ones are related to the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) event. The Hounde swarm is oblique to the dominant radiating CAMP swarm and may be linked with the similar-trending elongate Kakoulima intrusion in Guinea. In addition, the N150° Käyser swarm (Amazonian craton, South America) is dated at 1528 ± 2 Ma, providing a robust match with the Essakane swarm in a standard Amazonia-West African craton reconstruction, and resulting in a combined linear swarm >1500 km by >1500 km in extent. The Precambrian LIP barcode ages of c. 1790, 1765–1750, 1575, 1520, 915. 870 Ma for the WAC are compared with the global LIP record to identify possible matches on other crustal blocks, with reconstruction implications. These results contribute to the refinement of the magmatic ‘barcode’ for the West African and Amazonian cratons, representing the first steps towards plausible global paleogeographic reconstructions involving the West African and Amazonian cratons.

    • The COVID-19 pandemic has caused radical changes in education, as in everything else, bringing many challenges. Despite all the difficulties, the COVID-19 pandemic has enormous opportunities for online teaching and the use of digital technologies. A comprehensive understanding of this period is needed to investigate these opportunities. Thus, this study aims to explore the academic staff's experiences of online teaching and the use of digital technologies in practical skills-based courses in health care education. This study was conducted at six universities from six countries (Türkiye, Sweden, Finland, Portugal, Latvia, Lithuania). Data were collected between June 17, 2021 and November 30, 2021 via a focus group with an in-depth interview technique. 22 focus group interviews were conducted with a total of 117 participants. Colaizzi's method was used to evaluate the data to discover, comprehend, and define the experiences of academic staff. The analysis of the interview data resulted in 6 themes, 25 subthemes and 56 categories that captured participants' experiences regarding online teaching of practical skills and using digital technologies in health care education. The findings of the study provide crucial information that will help online teaching and digital technology for practical skills be successfully integrated.

    • A transition from gabbro to eclogite has been investigated at Vinddoldalen in south-central Norway, with the aim to link reaction textures to metamorphic zircon growth and to obtain a direct U-Pb zircon age of the metamorphic process. In the different rocks of the transition zone zircon occurs as (I) igneous prismatic grains, (II) metamorphic polycrystalline rims and pseudomorphs after baddeleyite, and (III) as tiny (< 10 mu m) bead-like zircon grains. Textural relations suggest that type II zircon formed by breakdown of baddeleyite in the presence of silica, whereas Fe-Ti oxides were the main Zr source for the type III zircon. Subsolidus liberation of Zr and formation of bead zircon took place by oxyexsolution of titanomagnetite during fluid-assisted metamorphism, and by resorption of Fe-Ti oxide in rock domains that were completely recrystallized to eclogite. SIMS (secondary ion mass spectrometry) and TIMS (thermal ionization mass spectrometry) dating provides comparable U-Pb ages of magmatic zircon and baddeleyite. Baddeleyite (TIMS) yielded an age of 1457 +/- 11 Ma for the gabbro emplacement. Bead-type metamorphic zircon from eclogite gave 425 +/- 10 Ma (TIMS) dating the metamorphic transition from gabbro to eclogite in the upper basement of the Lower Allochthon in the south-central Scandinavian Caledonides.

    • The Umkondo Large Igneous Province (LIP) is represented by widespread (similar to 2.0 x 10(6) km(2)) mafic intrusions that were rapidly emplaced (1112-1108 Ma) into the Kalahari craton of southern Africa and the formerly adjacent Grunehogna Province of Antarctica during Rodinia assembly. Very few Umkondo-aged dykes have been identified before, resulting in a poor understanding of this LIP's plumbing system and origin. Here we report six new similar to 1110 Ma U-Pb TIMS baddeleyite ages for various dolerite dykes, which, when coupled with geochemistry from some of the dykes, suggest association with the Umkondo LIP. The distribution of dykes defines distinct radiating swarms, which locate two separate magmatic centers on the northern margin of the Kalahari craton, and a third less robust center on the SE margin. The Umkondo intrusions' geochemistry indicates significant partial melting of the sub-continental mantle lithosphere (SCLM) and requires a transient thermal anomaly in the mantle. A viable model sees a mantle plume ascend beneath the craton and split into different portions that moved and ascended to different lithospheric thin-spots along the margins of the craton. As an alternative, the rise in mantle temperature associated with continental aggregation at this time is considered sufficient to cause partial melting of the SCLM without any plume involvement. Specific features of the Umkondo LIP's plumbing system are supportive of either model, and an approach of multiple working hypotheses is recommended. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    • Widespread 720 Ma magmatism has been linked with the break-up of Rodinia and the onset of the Sturtian ‘Snowball Earth’ event. We report a new U-Pb baddeleyite age from the Baikal dyke subswarm in southern Siberia which increases the known extent of the 720 Ma Irkutsk LIP and confirms a previous hypothesis that the Baikal and Sayan subswarms converge at the southern tip of the Irkutsk promontory. Together they define a mantle plume centre with direct links to the 720 Ma Franklin plume centre of northern Laurentia, thus constraining the paleo-reconstruction of southern Siberia and northern Laurentia. It is inferred that this combined 720 Franklin – Irktusk LIP event is associated with the breakup of southern Siberia from northern Laurentia during fragmentation of the Rodinia supercontinent. Expansion of 720 Ma magmatism into Siberia greatly increases the scale of the Franklin-Irktusk LIP.

    • The paper presents new geological, geochronological, geochemical, and Nd isotopic data on the late Paleoproterozoic dolerites of the Siberian craton. U-Pb baddeleyite ages of the Doros dolerites (Aldan shield, south-eastern Siberia) and East Anabar dolerites (Anabar shield, northern Siberia) are 1757 ± 4 and 1774 ± 6 Ma, respectively. This new geochronological data together with published 1.76–1.75 Ga ages for Timpton-Algamay dolerites of the Aldan shield and Chaya dolerites of the Baikal uplift (southern Siberia) revealed a 20 my difference between this magmatism in the north and south Siberia. The Doros dolerites in their chemical compositions correspond to sub-alkaline basaltic andesites, but the East Anabar dolerite is chemically close to basaltic trachyandesite. The Doros dolerites demonstrate negative and close to zero ɛNd(t) values (from −7.0 to +0.1), which correlate well with SiO2 and Mg#. All Doros dolerites have Nb–Ta and Ti anomalies in multielement spectra. The geochemical and Nd isotopic data suggest that the Doros dolerites have been formed by the mixing of mantle and crustal material. The East Anabar dolerites are characterized by a negative ɛNd(t) value of −3.7, negative Nb–Ta anomaly in multielement spectra, high concentrations of TiO2 and P2O5. The 1775 Ma East Anabar dolerites could be generated from a subcontinental lithospheric mantle source, possibly with some mantle plume interaction (possibly centred at the convergence with the 1.76–1.75 Ga fanning Aldan swarm). Geochemistry and Nd isotope systematics of all 1.78–1.75 Ga mafic dykes and intrusions of the Siberian craton indicate the subcontinental lithospheric mantle source or mantle source contaminated by crustal material. Geochronological data from the 1.79–1.75 Ga magmatic rocks of Siberia and other continents suggest continuous magmatism over this interval in some continents, but a series of short magmatic events/pulses (from one to four) separated by intervals of quiescence in other continents. We locate the analysed dykes and sills on new 1750 Ma and 1790 Ma global paleogeographic reconstructions. Analysis of 1.79–1.75 Ga geochemical data on mafic intrusions from Late Paleoproterozoic continents suggests the prevalence of subcontinental lithospheric mantle source for the mafic intrusions over the pure mantle plume source.

    • Geological data on the Precambrian basic complexes of the Siberian Craton and their isotopic age are considered. The three main episodes of Precambrian basic magmatism of Siberia correspond to certain stages of the geodynamic evolution of the craton and the Earth as a whole. In the Late Paleoproterozoic, largely in the south and the north of the craton, the basic rocks were emplaced against the background of post-collision extension, which followed the preceding collision-accretion stage responsible for the formation of the craton. In the Mesoproterozoic, primarily in the north of the craton, basic magmatism was controlled by dispersed within-plate extension apparently caused by the impact of a mantle plume. Neoproterozoic basic magmatism widespread in the southern and southeastern parts of the craton was caused by rifting, which accompanied breakdown of the Rodinia supercontinent and opening of the Paleoasian ocean along the southern margin of the Siberian Craton.

    • We present new geochronological data on dolerites from the Chaya dyke swarm of the Baikal inlier of the Siberian craton. The U-Pb dating of baddeleyite from one dyke located at the SW end of the Chaya dyke swarm yielded an age of 1752±6 Ma, similar to the previously obtained age of a dyke in the NE end of this swarm. These ages establish an age of 1752 Ma for a unified Chaya dyke swarm that extends for more than 200 km in the Baikal inlier of the Siberian craton. These new data confirm that the entire Chaya dyke swarm (as well as the Timpton-Algamay and Eastern Anabar swarms) is a part of an overall radiating dyke swarm belonging to the Late Paleoproterozoic Timpton Large Igneous Province (LIP), the center of which is located in the middle section of the Vilyuy river flow. Thus, the LIP is enlarged to include the area further west in the Siberian craton.

    • In this study, we examined the effect of muscle temperature (Tm) on adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and phosphocreatine utilization in single muscle fibres during the development of maximal power output in humans. Six male participants performed a 6-s maximal sprint on a friction-braked cycle ergometer under both normal (Tm = 34.3 degrees C, s = 0.6) and elevated (T(m) = 37.3 degrees C, s = 0.2) muscle temperature conditions. During the elevated condition, muscle temperature of the legs was raised, passively, by hot water immersion followed by wrapping in electrically heated blankets. Muscle biopsies were taken from the vastus lateralis before and immediately after exercise. Freeze-dried single fibres were dissected, characterized according to myosin heavy chain composition, and analysed for ATP and phosphocreatine content. Single fibres were classified as: type I, IIA, IIAX25 (1 - 25% IIX isoform), IIAX50 (26 - 50% IIX), IIAX75 (51 - 75% IIX), or IIAX100 (76 - 100% IIX). Maximal power output and pedal rate were both greater (P < 0.05) during the elevated condition by 258 W (s = 110) and 22 rev . min(-1) (s = 6), respectively. In both conditions, phosphocreatine content decreased significantly in all fibre types, with a greater decrease during the elevated condition in type IIA fibres (P < 0.01). Adenosine triphosphate content was also reduced to a greater (P < 0.01) extent in type IIA fibres during the elevated condition. The results of the present study indicate that after passive elevation of muscle temperature, there was a greater decrease in ATP and phosphocreatine content in type IIA fibres than in the normal trial, which contributed to the higher maximal power output.

    • The effect of temperature on skeletal muscle ATP turnover, pulmonary oxygen uptake and single fibre ATP and PCr content was studied during intense cycling exercise. Six healthy male subjects performed 6-min intense (Δ50%LT-VO(2peak)) cycling, at 60 rpm, under conditions of normal (N) and elevated muscle temperature (ET). Muscle biopsies obtained from the vastus lateralis at rest, 2 and 6 min were analysed for homogenate ATP, PCr, lactate and glycogen, allowing estimation of anaerobic ATP turnover. Freeze-dried single fibres from biopsies were characterised according to their myosin heavy chain composition (type I, IIA or IIAX) and analysed for ATP and PCr content. Pulmonary gas exchange was measured throughout. There was no difference in pulmonary oxygen uptake between the trials. The elevation of muscle temperature resulted in a lower (P < 0.05) PCr content, higher (P < 0.05) lactate content and greater (P < 0.05) anaerobic ATP turnover after 2 min of exercise. There was no effect of temperature on these measures at 6 min. In single fibres it was observed that in ET, there was a lower (P < 0.05) PCr content in type I fibres after 2 min with no differences between conditions after 6 min. The present study demonstrates that elevation of muscle temperature results in a greater anaerobic ATP turnover and type I fibre PCr degradation during the initial 2 min of intense exercise.

    • In this paper, we present geochronological, geochemical and palaeomagnetic results from the Hlagothi Complex and a NW-trending dolerite dyke swarm on the southeastern region of the Kaapvaal Craton in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The Hlagothi Complex consists of layered sills of meta-peridotite, pyroxenite and gabbro intruding into the Pongola Supergroup. U-Pb baddeleyite ages on the Hlagothi Complex and a NW-trending dyke of 2866 +/- 2 Ma and 2874 +/- 2 Ma, respectively, reveal a ca. 2.87 Ga magmatic event on the southeastern Kaapvaal Craton. The geochemical signature of the Hlagothi Complex recognises two discrete groupings, with a magmatic source that is chemically distinct from those of the older rift-related Nsuze and Dominion groups. Additional units on the Kaapvaal Craton can be linked with this new 'Hlagothi' event based on spatial and temporal association, and geochemistry: 1) the Thole Complex, 2) parts of the Usushwana Complex, and 3) flood basalts within the Mozaan Group and Central Rand Group. The association between all these units suggests a previously unrecognised large igneous province in the southeastern Kaapvaal Craton. Our palaeomagnetic data identifies a possible primary magnetisation within the least-altered lithologies of the Hlagothi Complex (with a virtual geographic pole at 23.4 degrees N, 53.4 degrees E, dp=8.2 degrees and dm=11.8 degrees). The bulk of samples however, displayed two episodes of remagnetisation. These are likely to be associated with 2.85 to 2.75 Ga aged granitoids across the southeastern Kaapvaal Craton, and tectonic activity in the nearby Meso- to Neoproterozoic Namaqua-Natal mobile belt A short-lived (<= 8 Ma) mantle plume is proposed to have caused the ca. 2.87 Ga magmatism, and also may well have controlled sedimentation within the Pongola-Witwatersrand basin. Volcanism during uplift would have been fed through a series of feeder dykes and sills, of which the Hlagothi Complex and NW-trending dykes are part of. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    • As one of two well-exposed intraoceanic arcs, the Talkeetna arc of Alaska affords an opportunity to understand processes deep within arcs. This study reports new Lu-Hf and Sm-Nd garnet ages, Ar-40/Ar-39 hornblende, mica and whole-rock ages, and U-Th/He zircon and apatite ages from the Chugach Mountains, Talkeetna Mountains, and Alaska Peninsula, which, in conjunction with existing geochronology, constrain the thermal history of the arc. Zircon U-Pb ages establish the main period of arc magmatism as 202-181 Ma in the Chugach Mountains and 183-153 Ma in the eastern Talkeetna Mountains and Alaska Peninsula. Approximately 184 Ma Lu-Hf and similar to 182 Ma Sm-Nd garnet ages indicate that 25-35 km deep sections of the arc remained above similar to 700 degrees C for as much as 15 Myr. The Ar-40/Ar-39 hornblende ages are chiefly 194-170 Ma in the Chugach Mountains and 175-150 Ma in the Talkeetna Mountains and Alaska Peninsula but differ from zircon U-Pb ages in the same samples by as little as 0 Myr and as much as 33 Myr, documenting a spatially variable thermal history. Mica ages have a broader distribution, from similar to 180 Ma to 130 Ma, suggesting local cooling and/or reheating. The oldest U-Th/He zircon ages are similar to 137 to 129 Ma, indicating no Cenozoic regional heating above similar to 180 degrees C. Although the signal is likely complicated by Cretaceous and Oligocene postarc magmatism, the aggregate thermochronology record indicates that the thermal history of the Talkeetna arc was spatially variable. One-dimensional finite difference thermal models show that this kind of spatial variability is inherent to intraoceanic arcs with simple construction histories. Citation: Hacker, B. R., P. B.     • STUDY DESIGN: Expert debate and synthesis of research to inform future management approaches for acute whiplash disorders.OBJECTIVE: To identify a research agenda toward improving outcomes for acute whiplash-injured individuals to lessen the incidence of transition to chronicity.SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: International figures are concordant, estimating that 50% of individuals recover from pain and disability within 3 to 6 months of a whiplash injury. The remainder report continuing symptoms up to 1 to 2 years or longer postinjury. As no management approach to date has improved recovery rates, new clinical/research directions are required for early management of whiplash-injured patients.METHODS: A group of multidisciplinary researchers critically debated evidence and current research concerning whiplash from biological, psychological, and social perspectives toward informing future research directions for management of acute whiplash.RESULTS: It was recognized that effective treatments for acute whiplash are constrained by a limited understanding of causes of whiplash-associated disorders. Acute whiplash presentations are heterogeneous leading to the proposal that a research priority was development of a triage system based on modifiable prognostic indicators and clinical features to better inform individualized early management decisions. Other priorities identified included researching effective early pain management for individuals presenting with moderate to high levels of pain; development of best education/information for acute whiplash; testing the efficacy of stratified and individualized rehabilitation, researching modes of delivery considering psychosocial modulators of pain and disability; and the timing, nature, and mode of delivery of cognitive-behavioral therapies. Directions were highlighted for future biomechanical research into injury prevention.CONCLUSION: The burden of whiplash injuries, the high rate of transition to chronicity, and evidence of limited effects of current management on transition rates demand new directions in evaluation and management. Several directions have been proposed for future research, which reflect the potential multifaceted dimensions of an acute whiplash disorder.

    • Age-determinations on a complex array of mafic dykes across the eastern Kaapvaal craton (Olsson et al.. 2010) are complemented herein by field evidence, dyke trend analysis, and petrological characterization of 58 dyke samples. similar to 2.95 Ga SE-trending, a similar to 2.65 Ga E- to SE-radiating, and similar to 1.90 Ga NE-trending swarms can be distinguished. Prominent Archean (similar to 2.95 and similar to 2.65 Ga) dyke ridges contain basement xenoliths, and have a more quartz-oversaturated, andesitic and calc-alkaline character. Proterozoic (similar to 1.90 Ga) dykes are, on the other hand, more aeromagnetically prominent tholeiitic basalts with higher modal (Fe, Ti)-oxide contents. Multi-elemental statistics indicate that the best geochemical discrimination is found between Archean high-Sr/V and La/Yb and Proterozoic low-Sr/V and La/Yb dyke swarms. The calc-alkaline character of Archean dyke swarms is augmented by LILE-enriched spider-element patterns with steeper REE-slopes as compared to the Proterozoic swarm. Geochemical similarities are roughly consistent with the similar to 2.95 and similar to 2.65 Ga dykes having fed coeval lavas within the Nsuze Group and Allanridge Formation (upper Ventersdorp Supergroup), respectively. similar to 1.90 Ga dykes match coeval sills on both the Zimbabwe and Kaapvaal cratons, and are presumed feeders to Soutpansberg Group lavas. This new information provided by dated feeder dyke swarms leads to a re-evaluation of petrotectonic settings, ranging from continental back-arc to radiating swarms emanating from igneous (plume?) centers.

Glucose and lipids stimulate the gut-hormones glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1, GLP-2 and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) but the effect of these on human postprandial lipid metabolism is not fully clarified. Objective. To explore the responses of GLP-1, GLP-2 and GIP after a fat-rich meal compared to the same responses after an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and to investigate possible relationships between incretin response and triglyceride-rich lipoprotein (TRL) response to a fat-rich meal. Design. Glucose, insulin, GLP-1, GLP-2 and GIP were measured after an OGTT and after a fat-rich meal in 65 healthy obese (BMI 26.5-40.2 kg/m2) male subjects. Triglycerides (TG), apoB48 and apoB100 in TG-rich lipoproteins (chylomicrons, VLDL1 and VLDL2) were measured after the fat-rich meal. Main Outcome Measures. Postprandial responses (area under the curve, AUC) for glucose, insulin, GLP-1, GLP-2, GIP in plasma, and TG, apoB48 and apoB100 in plasma and TG-rich lipoproteins. Results. The GLP-1, GLP-2 and GIP responses after the fat-rich meal and after the OGTT correlated strongly (r = 0.73, p<0.0001; r = 0.46, p<0.001 and r = 0.69, p<0.001, respectively). Glucose and insulin AUCs were lower, but the AUCs for GLP-1, GLP-2 and GIP were significantly higher after the fat-rich meal than after the OGTT. The peak value for all hormones appeared at 120 minutes after the fat-rich meal, compared to 30 minutes after the OGTT. After the fat-rich meal, the AUCs for GLP-1, GLP-2 and GIP correlated significantly with plasma TG- and apoB48 AUCs but the contribution was very modest. Conclusions. In obese males, GLP-1, GLP-2 and GIP responses to a fat-rich meal are greater than following an OGTT. However, the most important explanatory variable for postprandial TG excursion was fasting triglycerides.     • Palaeoproterozoic magmatism throughout the North Atlantic Craton (NAC) has produced dyke swarms of diverse orientations and emplacement ages. In southern West Greenland, previously identified swarms include the ca. 2500 Ma Kilarsaarfik dykes, ca. 2215 Ma boninitic norite (BN) dykes, and the abundant ca. 2040 Ma Kangamiut and coeval 2050-2030 Ma MD3 dykes. Additional insight into the distribution of swarms is provided by new baddeleyite U-Pb ID-TIMS dates interpreted as emplacement ages for six dykes. The geochemistry for a total of 42 samples on 40 dykes (including the dated dykes) provides some constraints on their petrogenesis. Two E-W trending dykes yield ages of 2365 +/- 2 Ma and 2374 +/- 4 Ma, representing a hitherto unknown magmatic event. We propose the name Graedefjord dykes for dykes of this age in southern West Greenland. One NE-SW trending dyke is dated at 2209 +/- 5 Ma, close to a previously published 2214 +/- 10 Ma age for a N-S trending dyke (member of BN dykes). Three dykes yield MD3 ages of 2053 +/- 2 Ma (E-W trending), 2049 +/- 6 Ma (N-S trending) and 2042 +/- 2 Ma (WNW-ESE trending). Ca. 2.21 Ga old and predominantly NE-SE and NNE-SSE trending dolerites (some of which are high-Al basalts) were derived from a relatively depleted mantle and injected during a boninite-dolerite magmatic event, together with nearby BN dykes derived from a harzburgitic, yet highly LREE and LILE enriched, subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM). Ca. 2.05 Ga Kangamiut-MD3 dolerites were derived from a similar ambient asthenospheric mantle and subsequently experienced crustal assimilation during fractional crystallisation. The ca. 2370 Ma dykes in the NAC are coeval with the Dharwar Giant Dyke Swarm of the Dharwar Craton (DC) and based on this unique age match it is proposed that the Dharwar and NAC were neighbours in the Palaeoproterozoic. Furthermore, both blocks share 222-2.21 Ga dykes, and matching the trends of 2.2-2.1 and 2.37 Ga swarms between the two blocks allows several plausible reconstructions.     • The Sao Francisco Craton (SFC) is an Archaean craton that hosts a significant number of mafic intrusions. Previous attempts to date the igneous emplacement of these rocks are limited to a few dates of poor precision. Here, two dyke swarms from the Uaua Block in the northeastern portion of the craton were dated using U-Pb on baddeleyite (ID-TIMS) and zircon (SIMS). The older dyke swarm trends mainly N-S to NW-SE (but also NE) and comprises norite dykes, whereas the younger dykes are tholeiite and trend NE-SW. The ages of 2726.2 +/- 3.2 and 2623.8 +/- 7.0 Ma date dykes of noritic and tholeiitic compositions, respectively. The older age matches the ages of several Archaean-Large Igneous Provinces (tholeiitic-komatiite greenstone belts and continental flood basalts) worldwide and represents part of a feeder system, but the younger age is similar to Andean style continental margin magmatism in the Sao Francisco and Zimbabwe cratons. The two dyke swarms are tholeiitic in composition but the noritic dykes are more enriched in both compatible and incompatible elements and have higher (La/Yb)(N) ratios than the tholeiite dykes. The norite dykes are interpreted as low degrees of melting from enriched refractory mantle sources, whereas the tholeiite dykes represent high degrees of partial melting of more depleted mantle sources; the two mafic dyke swarms may be related to each other by progressive extension of the continental lithosphere. It is suggested that the Uaua Block with its dyke swarms is a small piece of Archaean crust dispersed after the break-up of a major Archaean supercraton. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    • The Bushveld Complex in South Africa represents the world's largest intrusion of magnesium-and iron-rich magmas. The Bushveld magmas were emplaced beneath the Transvaal basin(1) similar to 2.06 billion years ago(2,3), but their origin remains elusive. The magmas may have formed in response to an upwelling mantle plume(4), ancient subduction5 or melting triggered by a meteorite impact(6). Here we use U-Pb dating of baddeleyite crystals to date a series of mafic magmatic dykes located east of the Transvaal basin. We find that these dykes formed between 2.70 and 2.66 billion years ago, roughly 600 million years before the Bushveld magmas were emplaced. Collectively, the geometry of the dykes forms a radiating swarm converging towards a focal point in the eastern part of the Bushveld Complex. Such radiating swarms typically record the impact of a mantle plume head that injected large volumes of magma into the crust and at the base of the lithosphere. We propose that subsequent cooling and metamorphism of these mantle-plume-derived rocks caused them to increase in density and sink, triggering subsidence of the Transvaal basin. The dense rocks may later have sunk away into the mantle, with the delamination causing the inflow of hot mantle that initiated production of the voluminous Bushveld magmas about 600 million years after the mantle plume impact.

    • Eleven new baddeleyite U–Pb crystallisation ages and associated whole-rock geochemistry on NE–NNE-trending tholeiitic dykes cutting across the north-eastern corner of the Archaean Kaapvaal Craton, the overlying Transvaal basin and the Bushveld and Phalaborwa igneous complexes collectively define a 1875–1835 Ma Black Hills Dyke Swarm (BHDS). Dyke ages do not discriminate between dyke trends or geographic location, but subdivide the BHDS into an older set of four more primitive dykes (MgO = 9.4–6.8 wt.%) and a younger set of seven dykes with more differentiated compositions (MgO = 5.6–4.2 wt.%). Despite being emplaced over a c. 40 Myr period, major element compositions are remarkably consistent with a single inversely modelled bulk fractionating assemblage of 57.5% plagioclase, 29.5% augite and 13.0% olivine. This fractionating assemblage requires an additional assimilation of bulk continental crust (at a low r-value of 0.2) for reversed modelling of parental rare earth elements. Even though this crustal assimilation indicates that primary magmas could potentially have been derived from a spinel-bearing ambient primordial and asthenospheric mantle source, anomalously low Nb and high Pb values for the more primitive older dykes may also have been inherited from a sub-continental lithospheric mantle source. The ages for the BHDS bridge a gap between c. 1889 and 1867 Ma mafic sills and c. 1830 Ma rhyodacitic pyroclasts, interbedded in the top of a ~3 km-thick Sibasa basalt sequence, which combine into a continuous c. 1.89–1.83 Ga igneous province. Similar geochemical signatures are consistent with all sills, volcanic rocks and BHDS feeders collectively belonging to a very voluminous and coherent igneous province, which arguably formed behind active Magondi and Okwa-Kheis arcs, along the western margin of the proto-Kalahari Craton.

    • Sex differences in episodic and spatial memory are frequently observed, suggesting that there may be sex-related structural differences in the hippocampus (HC). Earlier findings are inconsistent, possibly due to a known variability along the hippocampal longitudinal axis. Here, we assessed potential sex differences in hippocampal volume and structural covariance with the rest of the brain in young men and women (N=76), considering the anterior (aHC) and posterior (pHC) hippocampus separately. Women exhibited a larger pHC than men adjusted for brain size. Using partial least squares, we identified two significant patterns of structural covariance of the aHC and pHC. The first included brain areas that covaried positively and negatively in volume with both the aHC and pHC in men, but showed greater covariance with the aHC than pHC in women. The second pattern revealed distinct structural covariance of the aHC and pHC that showed a clear difference between men and women: in men the pHC showed reliable structural covariance with the medial and lateral parietal lobes and the prefrontal cortex, whereas in women the aHC showed reliable structural covariance with the anterior temporal lobe bilaterally. This pattern converges with resting state functional connectivity of the aHC and pHC and suggests that these hippocampal sections interact with different brain regions, consistent with a division of labor with regards to episodic and spatial memory. Our findings lend support to a division of the HC into an anterior and posterior part and identify sex as a potential moderating factor when investigating hippocampal structure and connectivity.

    • Three new U–Pb ID-TIMS isotopic ages confirm previous evidence for two geochemically distinct, early Mesoproterozoic pulses of mafic magmatism along the western margin of Laurentia. The first is a U–Pb baddeleyite age of 1590 ± 5 Ma from a dyke swarm in the Tobacco Root Mountains of western Laurentia. It is the first evidence for magmatism of this age in west-central Laurentia. The second is a U–Pb baddeleyite age of 1592.4 ± 2.5 from the Western Channel Diabase, 2000 km to the north in NW Laurentia, which supports two previous U–Pb baddeleyite ages of ca. 1590 Ma for these intrusions. The third is a U–Pb baddeleyite age of 1551 ± 5 Ma, also from the Tobacco Root Mountains, and provides evidence for a distinct younger pulse of mafic magmatism. We propose that the ca. 1590 Ma mafic intrusions in northwestern and west-central Laurentia represent components of a large igneous province (LIP), which we name the “ca. 1590 Ma Mammoth-Western Channel LIP.” This 1590 Ma LIP is geochemically similar to the contemporaneous volcanic rocks in the Gawler Craton and Curnamona Province of Australia. Furthermore, the 1599 Ma Wernecke Breccias near the Western Channel Diabase are geologically similar to the 1590 Ma Olympic Dam Breccias on the South Australian craton. We propose that a mantle plume at ca. 1590 Ma centered between the Laurentian and Southern Australian cratons, located by converging dyke swarms, fed the intrusions on Laurentia plus the Gawler Range Volcanics, the Hiltaba Suite granites and the Ninnerie Supersuite on the South Australian craton. Additionally, magmatic underplating from the plume set up the hydrothermal system responsible for the formation of the Wernecke and Olympic Dam Breccias. The younger 1551 Ma magmatism in the Tobacco Root Mountains, which shows less contamination of a metasomatized subcontinental lithospheric mantle than the older 1590 Ma pulse, may represent an early stage of rifting that pre-dates the ca. 1470 Ma Belt-Purcell Basin extension of western Laurentia. Felsic magmatism, hypothesized to have accompanied the 1590–1550 Ma LIP magmatism, could be a potential source for detrital zircon, thereby reducing the requirement for a non-Laurentian source for detrital zircon ages within the 1610–1490 Ma “North American Magmatic Gap.” Additionally, the 1590 Ma and 1550 Ma ages on western Laurentia dykes provide tighter constraints for previous paleomagnetic studies.

Previous attempts to date the igneous emplacement of these rocks are limited to a few poor precision Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd isochrons. Here, dykes from the Curaca belt, in the northeastern portion of the craton, as well as from the Chapada Diamantina region in the central part, were dated using U-Pb on baddeleyite (ID-TIMS). These dykes yielded similar baddeleyite U-Pb ages of 1506.7 +/- 6.9 Ma (Curaca) and 1501.0 +/- 9.1 Ma (Chapada), with converging trends indicating a possible magmatic centre located near the western margin of the Sao Francisco Craton. The two dyke swarms are subalkaline, and have light rare earth enriched chondrite-normalized patterns but the Curaca dykes have lower Mg-number and higher abundances of most incompatible trace elements than the Chapada dykes. Geochemical modelling and trace element ratios suggest that the two dyke swarms had different petrogenesis, with the Chapada dykes being derived from more depleted mantle sources and the Curaca dykes from enriched sources, however the mantle sources of both dyke swarms appear to have had contributions from an enriched plume. Current geochronological and palaeomagnetic data suggest a coherent Sao Francisco-Congo block from at least the late Mesoproterozoic until the opening of the South Atlantic (ca. 130 Ma ago). The discovery of ca. 1500 Ma intrusions in the Sao Francisco Craton is a major step forward to a more complete barcode record for the SFC-Congo Craton, which can be used in future palaeo-continental reconstructions.     • This study presents some of the experiences gained during a two year operational period of a decentralized fuel cell cogeneration plant installed in southern Sweden. Various modifications to the system are described, most notably a plume eliminator for the reduction of an undesirable vapor cloud emitted by the original system. Aside from vapor cloud elimination, the plume eliminator allows for more efficient plant operation, as a larger fraction of the system cooling requirements can be shifted to the district heating system. In-field measurements show a 17 to 26% increase in district heat production with use of the plume eliminator, depending upon the season of operation (winter or summer). The study also presents two options for added heat recovery, which are employed in conjunction with the plume eliminator: An air preheater module; and an air preheater/humidifier module. Calculations show that air preheating has a small but measurable impact on heat recovery (an additional 8% gain), while combined air preheating and humidification allows for nearly a 50% increase in district heat production.

    • © 2017 The Association for the Publication of the Journal of Internal Medicine Background: Overconsumption of dietary sugars, fructose in particular, is linked to cardiovascular risk factors such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, dyslipidemia and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. However, clinical studies have to date not clarified whether these adverse cardiometabolic effects are induced directly by dietary sugars, or whether they are secondary to weight gain. Objectives: To assess the effects of fructose (75 g day −1 ), served with their habitual diet over 12 weeks, on liver fat content and other cardiometabolic risk factors in a large cohort (n = 71) of abdominally obese men. Methods: We analysed changes in body composition, dietary intake, an extensive panel of cardiometabolic risk markers, hepatic de novo lipogenesis (DNL), liver fat content and postprandial lipid responses after a standardized oral fat tolerance test (OFTT). Results: Fructose consumption had modest adverse effects on cardiometabolic risk factors. However, fructose consumption significantly increased liver fat content and hepatic DNL and decreased β-hydroxybutyrate (a measure of β-oxidation). The individual changes in liver fat were highly variable in subjects matched for the same level of weight change. The increase in liver fat content was significantly more pronounced than the weight gain. The increase in DNL correlated positively with triglyceride area under the curve responses after an OFTT. Conclusion: Our data demonstrated adverse effects of moderate fructose consumption for 12 weeks on multiple cardiometabolic risk factors in particular on liver fat content despite only relative low increases in weight and waist circumference. Our study also indicates that there are remarkable individual differences in susceptibility to visceral adiposity/liver fat after real-world daily consumption of fructose-sweetened beverages over 12 weeks.

    • Within the Anabar shield in the northern part of the Siberia, Late Precambrian mafic igneous units are widespread, which form dyke swarms of different ages of different trends. This paper presents new data on the composition, structure and U-Pb dating of the E-W trending Kengede dyke swarm. Three new U-Pb ID-TIMS baddeleyite ages (1496±7, 1494±3 and 1494±5 Ma) were obtained from three dykes, indicating that the Kengede swarm is part of the 1500 Ma Kuonamka large igneous province (LIP). The previously recognized Kuonamka Large Igneous Province (LIP) extends for 700 km from the Anabar shield to the Olenek uplift in the northern part of the Siberia and is potentially linked to coeval dykes and sills of the São Francisco craton and the Congo craton. The newly dated Kengede swarm is parallel to but offset by 50 km from the previously dated 1501±3 Ma Kuonamka swarm, and the identification of these two subparallel dyke subswarms of the Kuonamka LIP supports the earlier interpretation that mantle plume centre was located along the extrapolated trend of the dykes near the eastern or western margin of the Siberia. The paper examines features of sulfide Cu-Ni mineralization in dolerites of the Kengede and East Anabar dyke swarms and discusses potential Cu-Ni-sulfide mineralization linked to the Precambrian mafic dyke swarms of different ages in the north-east of the Siberia.
