  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Open Access (OA) is defined as the free, online, immediate, permanent access to scientific and scholarly material in full-text. Open Access practices have reached the universities and now nearly all university researchers report knowledge of OA. Statistics Sweden (SCB) has estimated that 75% of all money invested in research activities in Sweden is done by private companies. In spite of this, the private sector has been relatively absent from the Open Access discussion and development, in contrast to the universities. The goal of this project was to study the advance of OA practices in the private sector. The method was to visit a number of Swedish companies and present the OA concept. After the presentations web-based surveys were distributed to measure previous knowledge of OA, publishing and readership practices, and views of the matter. Knowledge and awareness of Open Access is less within companies than at universities, although it seems to increase with publishing practices and higher educational degree. The publishing practices, and to lesser extent the reading practices, of scientific articles is less within companies, which could lead to a skewed funding situation for a future Open Access-economy based on an “author-pays” model. In discussions regarding how companies might pay for Open Access we therefore suggest that the flow of information needs to be guarded so that the benefit of access to scientific data does not become limited for companies and industry in a new way, as is already seen by some Open Access journals. The researchers’ access to information should be the same irrespective of whether they work at a company or at the university.

    • The present paper reviews the literature on the role of top management teams (TMT) in mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Given variety of theoretical lenses applied in this field - such as agency theory or upper echelon – and the plethora of on-going empirical studies in the last three decades, we believe this literature review has a crucial value for the existing strand of studies and future studies to come. In particular, it systematizes the extant knowledge by documenting the contradictory results of prior empirical studies, making argument on the sources of these contradictions, and pointing out future directions of research.

    • Since many years in Swedish national research project and Swedish-Chinese research framework we have carried out advanced ceramic fuel cell research and development, targeting for intermediate and low temperature ceramic or solid oxide fuel cells (ILTCFCs or ILTSOFCs, 300-700°C) based on ceramic-based composite materials. The ceramic composite material developments in Sweden have been experienced from the oxyacid-salts oxide proton-based conductors, non-oxide containment salts, the ceria-based composite electrolytes and nano-composites. Among them the ceria-based composites showed excellent ionic conductivity of 0.01 to 1 Scm-1 and ILTCFCs using these composites as electrolytes have achieved high performances of 200 to 1000 mWcm-2 at temperatures between 400 and 700°C. The excellent ion conduction was resulted from hybrid proton and oxygen ion conduction. The hybrid ion conduction and dual electrode reactions and processes create a new fuel cell system. Advanced ceramic fuel cell aims at developing a new generation to realize the challenges for fuel cell commercialization. This paper reviews our more than 14 years R&D on the field with emphasis on the recent progresses and achievements.

  • Distributed Dynamic Spectrum Access in Multichannel Random Access Networks with Selfish Users
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC), 2010 IEEE. - : IEEE. - 9781424463961 ; , s. 1-6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dynamic spectrum allocation schemes enable users to share spectrum resources by exploiting the variations in spectrum demand over time and space. Performing dynamic spectrum allocation centrally can be prohibitively complex. Therefore distributed schemes in which users can access the available channels independently may be preferable to centralized allocation. However, in distributed dynamic spectrum access, the lack of central coordination makes it difficult to utilize the system resources efficiently. Furthermore, if some or all of the users decide to deviate selfishly from the commonly agreed access procedure, this may have a decisive effect on system performance. In this paper we investigate the effect of incomplete information and selfish behavior on system performance in wireless access systems. We extend previous work by studying a distributed multichannel wireless random access system. Using a game-theoretic approach, we analyze the behavior of users in the selfish system and derive the transmission strategies at the Nash equilibrium. Our results show that lack of information leads to substantial degredation in performance of cooperative systems. We also show that there is a large incentive for selfish behavior in such cooperative systems. Selfish behavior of all users, however, causes further performance degradation, particularly in high load settings.

  • An alternative reading of religion and authoritarianism : the new logic between religion and state in the AKPs New Turkey
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Southeast European and Black Sea Studies. - : Routledge. - 1468-3857 .- 1743-9639. ; 19:1, s. 79-98
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since roughly 2011, the Turkish state and the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) have been going through a process of mutual transformation. Some of the historical apprehensions, biases and frustrations exhibited by Turkey as a middle power have been absorbed by the relatively reformist AKP. Conversely, the AKP and its undisputed leader Erdogan have seen their socio-political fears, power based conflicts and ethno-religious desires become dominant in all areas, including religion. As a consequence of this bilateral transformation, Turkey has become both an inclusionary and a hegemonic-authoritarian state, and at the same time a weak one. Within this new identity and structure of the state, Sunni Islam has become one of the regimes key focal points, with a new logic. This article seeks to explain the transformation of the relations between the AKPs Turkish state, religion and religious groups, by scrutinising Karrie Koesels logic of state-religion interaction in authoritarian regimes.

    • This study models individual characteristics, leader-member exchange, and organizational support in relationship to individual innovativeness in highly complex research and development (R&D) settings. The paper reports on a survey of 166 R&D team members, 43 team leaders, and 10 department managers in five Swedish industrial organizations. Innovative behavior was measured using quantitative indicators (e.g., new patent applications, new products, and scientific and other publications) and team leaders’ ratings. Personal initiative predicted individual innovative behavior, while intrinsic motivation and leadership (conceptualized by leader-member exchange theory) did not. A mediating effect was found where leader-member exchange was associated with innovation through the personal initiative of team members. Organizational support moderated the relationship between leader-member exchange and individuals’ personal initiative. High organizational support strengthened the relationship.

    • Reliable data with less variation play a key role for acceptance of the usefulness of the measurement output of a wheel profile measurement system (WPMS) in a railway network. However, in practice, most studies are carried out without checking the reliability of data from such a system, which may lead to inappropriate maintenance strategies. To ensure the measurement capability of WPMS and to support robust maintenance in railway systems, this study has evaluated measurement data for the flange height, flange thickness, flange slope, and tread hollowing of rolling stock wheels by using gauge repeatability and reproducibility (GR&R). In this study, acceptance and rejection criteria for the precision-to-tolerance ratio (PTR), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and discrimination ratio (DR) have been employed to evaluate the measurement capabilities. For the purpose of illustration, we have implemented a new proposed approach. This approach involves both an analysis using graphs with four regions with a confidence interval (CI) of 95% and an analysis using a graph with three regions with only the predicted values; the latter type of graph represents an innovation made in this study. The results show that the measurements of the tread hollowing and flange slope are on an acceptable level, while those for the flange height and flange thickness have to be rejected as unacceptable. The action proposed to increase the quality of data on the flange height and flange thickness is to enhance the calibration of the WPMS. In conclusion, GR&R is a useful tool to evaluate the measurement capability of WPMS and to provide helpful support for maintenance decision making.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The central prediction of the Aghion, Bloom, Blundell and Howitt model is an inverted U-shaped relationship between innovation and competition. The model is built on the assumption of a product market and has not yet been tested on the service sector. Using detailed firm-level data on Swedish service-sector firms, we find evidence of an inverse U-shaped relationship for exporting service-sector firms. A further breakdown of innovation expenditures shows that the inverse U-shaped pattern holds for intramural R&D and training, but not for extramural R&D. Finally, the results indicate that as competition increases, small firms tend to seek strategic alliances with competitors, whereas large firms tend to reduce collaboration with competitors. The behavior of large firms can partly be due to their superior capacity to handle innovation projects internally, which will become more important if increased competition results in higher pay-offs to innovation.

    • We test whether predictions of the Aghion et al. (Aghion, P., Bloom, N., Blundell, R., Griffith, R. and Howitt, P. (2004) Competition and Innovation: An Inverted U Relationship. NBER Working Paper series, No. 9269.) model are supported by firm-level data. In particular, we analyze if there is an inverted U-shaped relation between competition and R&D. Results show that the inverted U-shaped relation is supported by the Herfindahl index but not by the price cost margin. Using the Herfindahl index, results suggest that breaking up monopolies increases R&D, whereas further increases in competition most likely lead to reduced R&D. Comparing different estimators, we find that time series-based estimators typically result in less clear-cut results, probably driven by a lack of time series variation in measures of competition.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The future of nations and nationalism appears to many to be more uncertain than ever in view of the growing interdependence of the planet. The question of whether globalization heralds the end of nationalism cannot be answered properly without distinguishing between nation and state. In the case of the state, the question is whether states can preserve their sovereignty intact in an age when politics is conducted at a supranational and subnational level. In the case of the nation, the question is whether there are forms of community that offer alternative foci of belonging. Even though the nation continues to be an important source of political and cultural identity, it can be argued that globalization has increased people's reflexiveness with regard to their identity and facilitated the emergence of new forms of belonging that are deterritorial, plural, and hybrid.

  • Better safe than sorry: An empirical investigation of the role of purchaser experience
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The lead times of suppliers vary considerably, causing manufacturers to suffer from low service levels and also to accumulate material and product inventories. Although various inventory control and production planning models have been studied in the operations management literature, there is scant research on the behavioral aspects of purchasing decisions beyond the ordering quantity. Drawing on transaction-level purchasing data from a large European manufacturer, we investigate the purchasers' ordering behavior under variable lead times. We examine the learning of the purchasers from their experiences with the suppliers, in terms of both how many encounters they had with the suppliers and how the experiences went. We apply two-part regression models with fixed effects to estimate the effects of purchaser experience and past supplier performance. Our analysis reveals insights into the purchasers' learning process, indicating that they rely on their prior encounters with suppliers and change their ordering behavior as they gain experience. We show that the decision to add positive safety time is driven mainly by supplier performance. With experience, purchasers become more eager to use safety time as a buffering strategy, while simultaneously learning not to overreact to past supplier performance. Furthermore, purchasers give higher weights to the normalized lateness/tardiness of their most recent encounters than to earlier ones. Our results highlight the importance of understanding the behavioral aspects that impact purchasing operations, due to which employees might have objectives that are misaligned with the company goals. This finding also points to a need for further automation of ordering tasks as well as the incorporation of behavioral factors to decision support systems.

  • Inhibition of Thrombin Abrogates the Instant Blood-Mediated Inflammatory Reaction Triggered by Isolated Human Islets : Possible application of the thrombin inhibitor melagatran in clinical islet transplantation
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Diabetes. - : American Diabetes Association. - 0012-1797 .- 1939-327X. ; 51:6, s. 1779-1784
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A thrombotic/inflammatory reaction is elicited when isolated islets of Langerhans come in contact with ABO-compatible blood. The detrimental effects of this instant blood-mediated inflammatory reaction (IBMIR) provide a reasonable explanation for the observation that an unexpectedly high number of islets, from several donors, are needed to produce normoglycemia in transplant patients with type 1 diabetes. In this study, the hypothesis that a specific thrombin inhibitor, Melagatran, could reduce IBMIR in an in vitro model in which human islets are exposed to ABO-compatible blood was tested. The administration of Melagatran abrogated IBMIR dose-dependently. Islets exposed to blood, in the absence or presence of 0.4 μmol/l Melagatran, exhibited a loss of integrity and were found to be trapped in macroscopic clots containing platelets and CD11b+ leukocytes. At concentrations from 1 to 10 μmol/l, Melagatran inhibited both coagulation and complement activation. Also, platelet and leukocyte activation and consumption were decreased. Islet morphology was maintained with almost no platelets adhering to the surface, and infiltration by CD11b+ leukocytes was considerably reduced. In conclusion, Melagatran significantly reduced IBMIR in this model system. This protective effect indicates that thrombin plays a pivotal role in IBMIR and suggests that thrombin inhibition can improve the outcome of clinical islet transplantation.

  • Strategies to mitigate the effects of future extreme heat waves - A new method for mapping
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IOP Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing Ltd. ; , s. 1.06-1.10
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Global warming is increasingly causing extreme weather events, such as heat waves. One-way heat waves are problematic in society, particularly in urban areas, is because of their negative impact on vulnerable groups including elderly people and children. Organizations such as municipalities that are responsible for local schools, day care centres and/or elderly homes, may struggle to provide the necessary care and function during extreme heat waves. This work explores how remote sensing images providing historical data of land surface temperatures (LST) can be used to create summer urban heat island maps and heat wave intensity, and in the longer run, how such information could be used by municipalities and other actors to mitigate effects of future heat waves. The method presented in this study was used to detect the “hot spots” in two participating Swedish municipalities and identify the municipal services located within these spots based on MODIS (1 km) and Landsat (30 m) LST datasets. Furthermore, this study showed that urban heat island phenomenon existed in the two participating municipalities. In general, this methodology can be applicable at both local and regional scale, although it might require additional site-specific data. © Content from this work may be used under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 licence. • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Fifth International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks Communications (CROWNCOM), 2010. - 9781424458851 ; , s. 5577687-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dynamic spectrum access (DSA) schemes allow the users to share spectrum resources by taking advantage of the variations in spectrum demand over time and space. Carrying out dynamic spectrum allocation centrally, however, can be a complex task. For this reason, distributed schemes in which users can access the available channels independently may be preferable to centralized DSA schemes. Cognitive radio systems, which enable user terminals to sense their environment and form their action accordingly, are particularly well-suited for distributed systems. On the other hand, the freedom in distributed schemes gives the users the option to act selfishly, which has decisive effects on system performance. In this paper we consider a distributed multichannel wireless random access system where users selfishly access the channels in the system. We analyze the behavior of the selfish users by modeling the system as a non-cooperative game and we identify all stable operating points (Nash equilibria) of this game. We then compare the performance of this system with a number of cooperative distributed DSA schemes in terms of user utilities. Our results show that the performance of the selfish multichannel random access system can be comparable to cooperative schemes.

    • Based on a brand experience survey done on global mobile phone brands, we have analysed how brand experiences impact brand loyalty and are associated to prior product selections. We have created two conceptual models after doing exploratory factor analysis (EFA) on data collected from Finland (N=468). Our findings indicate that brand experiences of mobile phone brands consist of intellectual, sensory, behavioural, and eco-friendliness related aspects, and that the affective dimension that has earlier been linked to brand experiences is in fact associated more with brand loyalty. Also the perception of eco-friendliness in the brand experience can have an impact on brand loyalty and it is reflected in the product selection. Thus we suggest that integrated marketing and innovation management concentrate on improving the emotions consumers have towards a brand and measure this dimension to track how the brand has succeeded to deliver intellectual, sensory, behavioural and eco-friendliness related brand experiences.

    • Information problems and lack of collateral value should make R&D more susceptible to financing frictions than other investments, yet existing evidence on whether financing constraints limit R&D is decidedly mixed, particularly in the studies of non-U.S. firms. We study a large sample of European firms and also find little evidence of binding finance constraints when we estimate standard investment-cash flow regressions. However, we find strong evidence that the availability of finance matters for R&D once we directly control for: (i) firm efforts to smooth R&D with cash reserves and (ii) firm use of external equity finance. Our study provides a framework for evaluating financing constraints when firms rely extensively on external finance and endogenously manage buffer stocks of liquidity to keep investment smooth, and our findings show that controlling for this smoothing behavior is critical for uncovering the full effect of financing constraints. Our findings also indicate a major role for external equity in financing R&D, highlighting a causal channel through which stock market development and liberalization can promote economic growth by increasing firm-level innovative activity.

    • Absorptive capacity, conceptualized as identifying, selecting and integrating useful knowledge from the environment into commercial applications, is a key capability for any organization, team or individual. While prior literature has made substantial advancement into the performance consequences of absorptive capacity, few studies have addressed what actually constitutes ACAP on a micro level. Thus, there exists a significant gap within the literature concerning the micro-foundations of ACAP. This study attempts to fill this gap by means of multiple case studies within the R&D organizations of three multinational engineering firms. Our findings show how the micro foundations of absorptive capacity are rooted in individual skills, roles and relationships.
