  • SMARTFREIGHT/ IR6.1: Theoretical background and intermediate local scenarios for services to be provided
  • 2009
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A conceptual model is preented that is well suited to understand the relationhsips between traffic, transport and logistics. The model has been published and used in international work (EC, OECD, etc.) and is in this context used to facilitate the harmonisation and common understanding of terminology within SMARTFREIGHT. (MARTFREIGHT is a FP7 project (Contract N. FP7-216353). The model is used to explain why, in an urban context, the traffic management and freight transport community still have rather limited knowledge of each other's field and perspective. These communities will face a difficult learning process, necessary to understand how to best market the addedd functionalities offered by SMARTFREIGHT, and a combined/tentative "Freight Transport Service & Control Centre" (FTSCC) is proposed. The extended functionalities to be developed in SMARTFREIGHT are presented, and a first approach to the testing of these functionalities in the SMARTFREIGHT context is discussed. A template to show the general character and level of detail for a typical SMARTFREIGHT scenario is given.

  • Five Traffic Designs in Combined Transport Systems - A Theoretical Discussion
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Logistyka Engineering Machines Problems. ; 2:2, s. 111-127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transportation system design is influenced by geographical and infrastructural conditions as well as the demand of transport services, in terms of goods flow and transport quality. In this paper five significantly different theoretical layouts of traffic systems are described. These are direct connection, corridor, hub and spoke, fixed routes and finally allocated routes. The approach is rather universal, for example it can describe distribution networks of forwarding agents or, as in this application, systems for combined transport. The paper is divided into two sections. Part one is a theoretical discussion of the characteristics of the traffic designs, focusing on when they are suitable for general transportation. The system environment is described in terms of geographical and infrastructural factors and transport demand factors. Real world examples are given and one ideal transport situation is described for each of the five traffic patterns.Part two is an application to combined transport. Since the European railway network is dominated by national railway organisations, the size of the discussed traffic networks is comparable to the major European countries. Performance characteristics of different subsystems with special attention given to terminal performance, are described according to each solution. The discussion will include a survey of existing combined transport techniques and how these are related to the performance characteristics. The purpose of the paper is to discuss some alternate traffic solutions for combined transport systems.

  • Logistics trends and their impact on European combined transport - services, traffic and industrial organisation
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Logistik-management. - 1436-6231. ; 5:2, s. 25-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper an attempt is made to apply a joint logistics and transportation perspective on combined transport. Three conceptual models are used to explain the mutual complement of logistics and trans-portation, the increasing business process and transactional orientation of the industrial manufacturing system and the resulting fast increase in competence requirements. An overview of current trends in logistics is provided, which together with the models is used to dis-cuss impacts on the transportation sector and more precisely on European combined transport. The offered services, the structure of traffic and ongoing changes of industrial organisation are focussed. This theoretical background is combined with evidence from a large number of references, which to-gether support the development of a scenario of development trends for European combined transport. The final conclusion is the combined transport industry needs a competence leap in the direction of an intermodal industry that is fully integrated across all four classic traffic modes and uses equally so-phisticated information and communication tools for the logistics support of their operations as the large globally active manufacturing industries.
