  • ALMA Reveals Extended Cool Gas and Hot Ionized Outflows in a Typical Star-forming Galaxy at Z=7.13
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 1538-4357 .- 0004-637X. ; 934:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present spatially resolved morphological properties of [C II] 158 mu m, [O III] 88 mu m, dust, and rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) continuum emission for A1689-zD1, a strongly lensed, sub-L* galaxy at z = 7.13, by utilizing deep Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations. While the [O III] line and UV continuum are compact, the [C II] line is extended up to a radius of r similar to 12 kpc. Using multi-band rest-frame far-infrared continuum data ranging from 52 to 400 mu m, we find an average dust temperature and emissivity index of Tdust=41-14+17 beta=1.7-0.7+1.1 6 galaxies.

  • Accurate dust temperature determination in a z = 7.13 galaxy
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society: Letters. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1745-3925 .- 1745-3933. ; 508:1, s. L58-L63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report ALMA Band 9 continuum observations of the normal, dusty star-forming galaxy A1689-zD1 at z = 7.13, resulting in a ∼4.6 σ detection at 702 GHz. For the first time, these observations probe the far-infrared spectrum shortward of the emission peak of a galaxy in the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). Together with ancillary data from earlier works, we derive the dust temperature, Td, and mass, Md, of A1689-zD1 using both traditional modified blackbody spectral energy density fitting, and a new method that relies only on the [C ii] 158 μm line and underlying continuum data. The two methods give Td = (42+13-7, 40+13-) K, and Md} = (1.7+1.3-0.7, 2.0+1.8-1.0), ×, 107, M⊙. Band 9 observations improve the accuracy of the dust temperature (mass) estimate by ∼50 per cent (6 times). The derived temperatures confirm the reported increasing Td-redshift trend between z = 0 and 8; the dust mass is consistent with a supernova origin. Although A1689-zD1 is a normal UV-selected galaxy, our results, implying that ∼85 per cent of its star-formation rate is obscured, underline the non-negligible effects of dust in EoR galaxies.

  • JWST and ALMA Multiple-line Study in and around a Galaxy at z =8.496: Optical to Far-Infrared Line Ratios and the Onset of an Outflow Promoting Ionizing Photon Escape
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 1538-4357 .- 0004-637X. ; 964:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) deep spectroscopy for a lensed galaxy at z(spec) = 8.496 with log(M-star/M-circle dot) similar to 7.8 whose optical nebular lines and stellar continuum are detected by JWST/NIRSpec and NIRCam Early Release Observations in the field of SMACS J0723.3-7327. Our ALMA spectrum shows [O III] 88 mu m and [C II] 158 mu m line detections at 4.0 sigma and 4.5 sigma, respectively. The redshift and position of the [O III] line coincide with those of the JWST source, while the [C II] line is blueshifted by 90 km s(-1) with a spatial offset of 0.'' 5 (approximate to 0.5 kpc in the source plane) from the centroid of the JWST source. The NIRCam F444W image, including [O III] lambda 5007 and H beta line emission, spatially extends beyond the stellar components by a factor of >8. This indicates that the z = 8.5 galaxy has already experienced strong outflows as traced by extended [O III] lambda 5007 and offset [C II] emission, which would promote ionizing photon escape and facilitate reionization. With careful slit-loss corrections and the removal of emission spatially outside the galaxy, we evaluate the [O III] 88 mu m/lambda 5007 line ratio, and derive the electron density n (e) by photoionization modeling to be 220(-130)(+230) cm(-3), which is comparable with those of z similar to 2-3 galaxies. We estimate an [O III] 88 mu m/[C II] 158 mu m line ratio in the galaxy of >4, as high as those of known z similar to 6-9 galaxies. This high [O III] 88 mu m/[C II] 158 mu m line ratio is generally explained by the high n(e) as well as the low metallicity (Z(gas)/Z(circle dot)=0.04(-0.02)(+0.02)), high ionization parameter (log U > -2.27), and low carbon-to-oxygen abundance ratio (log(C/O) = [-0.52: -0.24]) obtained from the JWST/NIRSpec data; further [C II] follow-up observations will constrain the covering fraction of photodissociation regions.

  • Rapid formation of large dust grains in the luminous supernova 2010j1
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 511:7509, s. 326-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The origin of dust in galaxies is still a mystery(1-4). The majority of the refractory elements are produced in supernova explosions, but it is unclear how and where dust grains condense and grow, and how they avoid destruction in the harsh environments of star-forming galaxies. The recent detection of 0.1 to 0.5 solar masses of dust in nearby supernova remnants(5-7) suggests in situ dust formation, while other observations reveal very little dust in supernovae in the first few years after explosion(1,8,10). Observations of the spectral evolution of the bright SN 2010j1 have been interpreted as pre-existing dust(11), dust formationlz(12,13) or no dust at all(14). Here we report the rapid (40 to 240 days) formation of dust in its dense circumstellar medium. The wavelength-dependent extinction of this dust reveals the presence of very large (exceeding one micrometre) grains, which resist destruction(15). At later times (500 to 900 days), the near-infrared thermal emission shows an accelerated growth in dust mass, marking the transition of the dust source from the circumstellar medium to the ejecta. This provides the link between the early and late dust mass evolution in supernovae with dense circumstellar media.

  • Big Three Dragons: A z=7.15 Lyman-break galaxy detected in [Oiii] 88 mu m, [Cii] 158 mu m, and dust continuum with ALMA
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Publication of the Astronomical Society of Japan. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2053-051X .- 0004-6264. ; 71:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present new ALMA observations and physical properties of a Lyman break galaxy at z = 7.15. Our target, B14-65666, has a bright ultra-violet (UV) absolute magnitude, M-UV approximate to -22.4, and has been spectroscopically identified in Ly alpha with a small rest-frame equivalent width of approximate to 4 angstrom. A previous Hubble Space TElescope (HST) image has shown that the target is composed of two spatially separated clumps in the rest-frame UV. With ALMA, we have newly detected spatially resolved [Oiii] 88 mu m, [Cii] 158 mu m, and their underlying dust continuum emission. In the whole system of B14-65666, the [Oiii] and [Cii] lines have consistent redshifts of 7.1520 +/- 0.0003, and the [Oiii] luminosity, (34.4 +/- 4.1)x 10(8)L(circle dot), is about three times higher than the [Cii] luminosity, (11.0 +/- 1.4) x 10(8)L(circle dot). With our two continuum flux densities, the dust temperature is constrained to be T-d approximate to 50-60K under the assumption of a dust emissivity index of beta(d) = 2.0-1.5, leading to a large total infrared luminosity of L-TIR approximate to 1 x 10(12)L(circle dot). Owing to our high spatial resolution data, we show that the [Oiii] and [Cii] emission can be spatially decomposed into two clumps associated with the two rest-frame UV clumps whose spectra are kinematically separated by approximate to 200kms(-1). We also find these two clumps have comparable UV, infrared, [Oiii], and [Cii] luminosities. Based on these results, we argue that B14-65666 is a starburst galaxy induced by a major merger. The merger interpretation is also supported by the large specific star formation rate (defined as the star formation rate per unit stellar mass), sSFR Gyr(-1), inferred from our SED fitting. Probably, a strong UV radiation field caused by intense star formation contributes to its high dust temperature and the [Oiii]-to-[Cii] luminosity ratio.

  • A solar metallicity galaxy at z > 7? Possible detection of the [N II] 122 mu m and [O III] 52 mu m lines
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 521:2, s. 2526-2534
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the first detection of the [NII] 122 mu m and [O III ] 52 mu m lines for a reionization-epoch galaxy. Based on these lines and previous [C II ] 158 mu m and [O III ] 88 mu m measurements, using two different radiati ve transfer models of the interstellar medium, we estimate an upper limit on electron density of < 500 cm(-3) and an approximate gas-phase metallicity of Z/Z(circle dot) similar to 1.1 +/- 0.2 for A1689-zD1, a gravitationally lensed dusty galaxy at z = 7.133. Other measurements or indicators of metallicity so far in galaxy interstellar media at z greater than or similar to 6 are typically an order of magnitude lower than this. The unusually high metallicity makes A1689-zD1 inconsistent with the fundamental metallicity relation, although there is likely significant dust obscuration of the stellar mass, which may partly resolve the inconsistency. Given a solar metallicity, the dust-to-metals ratio is a factor of several lower than expected, hinting that galaxies be yond z similar to 7 may hav e lower dust formation efficiency . Finally , the inferred nitrogen enrichment compared to oxygen, on which the metallicity measurement depends, indicates that star formation in the system is older than about 250 Myr, pushing the beginnings of this galaxy to z > 10.

  • Dust depletion of metals from local to distant galaxies : II. Cosmic dust-to-metal ratio and dust composition
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 681
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The evolution of cosmic dust content and the cycle between metals and dust in the interstellar medium (ISM) play a fundamental role in galaxy evolution. The chemical enrichment of the Universe can be traced through the evolution of the dust-to-metal ratio (DTM) and the dust-to-gas ratio (DTG) with metallicity. The physical processes through which dust is created and eventually destroyed remain to be elucidated. We use a novel method to determine mass estimates of the DTM, DTG, and dust composition in terms of the fraction of dust mass contributed by element X ( fMX ) based on our previous measurements of the depletion of metals in different environments (the Milky Way, the Magellanic Clouds, and damped Lyman-α absorbers (DLAs) towards quasars (QSOs) and towards gamma-ray bursts (GRBs)), which were calculated from the relative abundances of metals in the ISM through absorption-line spectroscopy column densities observed mainly from VLT/UVES and X-shooter, and HST/STIS. We also derive the dust extinction from the estimated dust depletion (AV,depl) for GRB-DLAs, the Magellanic Clouds, and the Milky Way, and compare it with the AV estimated from extinction (AV,ext). We find that the DTM and DTG ratios increase with metallicity and with the dust tracer [Zn/Fe]. This suggests that grain growth in the ISM is the dominant process of dust production, at least in the metallicity range (-2 ≤ [M/H]tot . 0.5) and redshift range (0.6 < z < 6.3) that we are studying. The increasing trend in the DTM and DTG with metallicity is in good agreement with a dust production and evolution hydrodynamical model. Our data suggest that the stellar dust yield is much lower (about 1%) than the metal yield and thus that the overall amount of dust in the warm neutral medium that is produced by stars is much lower than previously estimated. The global neutral gas metallicity is decreasing over cosmic time and is traced similarly by quasar-DLAs and GRB-DLAs. We find that, overall, AV,depl is lower than AV,ext for the Milky Way and in a few lines of sight for the Magellanic Clouds, a discrepancy that is likely related to the presence of carbonaceous dust associated with dense clumps of cold neutral gas. For the other environments studied here, we find good agreement overall between the AV,ext and AV,depl. We show that the main elements ( fMX > 1%) that contribute to the dust composition, by mass, are O, Fe, Si, Mg, C, S, Ni, and Al for all the environments, with Si, Mg, and C being equivalent contributors. There are nevertheless variations in the dust composition depending on the overall amount of dust. The abundances measured at low dust regimes in quasar- and GRB-DLAs suggest the presence of pyroxene and metallic iron in dust. These results give important information on the dust and metal content of galaxies across cosmic times, from the Milky Way up to z = 6.3.

  • A Two-dimensional Spectroscopic Study of Emission-line Galaxies in the Faint Infrared Grism Survey (FIGS). I. Detection Method and Catalog
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 868:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the results from the application of a two-dimensional emission line detection method, EMission-line two-Dimensional (EM2D), to the near-infrared G102 grism observations obtained with the Wide-Field Camera 3 (WFC3) as part of the Cycle 22 Hubble Space Telescope Treasury Program: the Faint Infrared Grism Survey (FIGS). Using the EM2D method, we have assembled a catalog of emission line galaxies (ELGs) with resolved star formation from each of the four FIGS fields. Not only can one better assess the global properties of ELGs, but the EM2D method allows for the analysis and improved study of the individual emission-line region within each galaxy. This paper includes a description of the methodology, advantages, and the first results of the EM2D method applied to ELGs in FIGS. The advantage of 2D emission line measurements includes significant improvement of galaxy redshift measurements, approaching the level of accuracy seen in high-spectral-resolution data, but with greater efficiency; and the ability to identify and measure the properties of multiple sites of star formation and over scales of similar to 1 kpc within individual galaxies out to z similar to 4. The EM2D method also significantly improves the reliability of high-redshift (z similar to 7) Ly alpha detections. Coupled with the wide field of view and high efficiency of space-based grism observations, EM2D provides a noteworthy improvement on the physical parameters that can be extracted from grism observations.

  • FIGS-Faint Infrared Grism Survey : Description and Data Reduction
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 846:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Faint Infrared Grism Survey (FIGS) is a deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3/IR (Wide Field Camera 3 Infrared) slitless spectroscopic survey of four deep fields. Two fields are located in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey-North (GOODS-N) area and two fields are located in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey-South (GOODS-S) area. One of the southern fields selected is the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. Each of these four fields were observed using the WFC3/G102 grism (0.8 mu m-1.15 mu m continuous coverage) with a total exposure time of 40 orbits (approximate to 100 kilo-seconds) per field. This reaches a 3 sigma continuum depth of approximate to 26 AB magnitudes and probes emission lines to similar to 10(-17) erg s(-1) cm(-2). This paper details the four FIGS fields and the overall observational strategy of the project. A detailed description of the Simulation Based Extraction (SBE) method used to extract and combine over 10,000 spectra of over 2000 distinct sources brighter than m(F105W) = 26.5 mag is provided. High fidelity simulations of the observations is shown to significantly improve the background subtraction process, the spectral contamination estimates, and the final flux calibration. This allows for the combination of multiple spectra to produce a final high quality, deep, 1D spectra for each object in the survey.

  • Ultraviolet emission lines in young low-mass galaxies at z similar or equal to 2 : physical properties and implications for studies at z > 7
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 445:3, s. 3200-3220
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present deep spectroscopy of 17 very low mass (M* similar or equal to 2.0 x 10(6)-1.4 x 10(9) M-circle dot) and low luminosity (M-UV similar or equal to -13.7 to -19.9) gravitationally lensed galaxies in the redshift range z similar or equal to 1.5-3.0. Deep rest-frame ultraviolet spectra reveal large equivalent width emission from numerous emission lines (N IV], O III], C IV, Si III], C III]) which are rarely seen in individual spectra of more massive star-forming galaxies. C III] is detected in 16 of 17 low-mass star-forming systems with rest-frame equivalent widths as large as 13.5 angstrom. Nebular C (IV) emission is present in the most extreme C III] emitters, requiring an ionizing source capable of producing a substantial component of photons with energies in excess of 47.9 eV. Photoionization models support a picture whereby the large equivalent widths are driven by the increased electron temperature and enhanced ionizing output arising from metal-poor gas and stars (0.04-0.13 Z(circle dot)), young stellar populations (6-50 Myr), and large ionization parameters (log U = -2.16 to -1.84). The young ages implied by the emission lines and continuum spectral energy distributions (SEDs) indicate that the extreme line emitters in our sample are in the midst of a significant upturn in their star formation activity. The low stellar masses, blue UV colours, and large specific star formation rates of our sample are similar to those of typical z greater than or similar to 6 galaxies. Given the strong attenuation of Ly alpha in z greater than or similar to 6 galaxies, we suggest that C III] is likely to provide our best probe of early star-forming galaxies with ground-based spectrographs and one off the most efficient means of confirming z greater than or similar to 10 galaxies with the James Webb Space Telescope.

  • HELIUM IN NATAL H II REGIONS : THE ORIGIN OF THE X-RAY ABSORPTION IN GAMMA-RAY BURST AFTERGLOWS
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 768:1, s. 23-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Soft X-ray absorption in excess of Galactic is observed in the afterglows of most gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), but the correct solution to its origin has not been arrived at after more than a decade of work, preventing its use as a powerful diagnostic tool. We resolve this long-standing problem and find that absorption by He in the GRB's host H II region is responsible for most of the absorption. We show that the X-ray absorbing column density (N-HX) is correlated with both the neutral gas column density and with the optical afterg(l)ow's dust extinction (A(V)). This correlation explains the connection between dark bursts and bursts with high N-HX values. From these correlations, we exclude an origin of the X-ray absorption which is not related to the host galaxy, i.e., the intergalactic medium or intervening absorbers are not responsible. We find that the correlation with the dust column has a strong redshift evolution, whereas the correlation with the neutral gas does not. From this, we conclude that the column density of the X-ray absorption is correlated with the total gas column density in the host galaxy rather than the metal column density, in spite of the fact that X-ray absorption is typically dominated by metals. The strong redshift evolution of N-HX/A(V) is thus a reflection of the cosmic metallicity evolution of star-forming galaxies and we find it to be consistent with measurements of the redshift evolution of metallicities for GRB host galaxies. We conclude that the absorption of X-rays in GRB afterglows is caused by He in the H II region hosting the GRB. While dust is destroyed and metals are stripped of all of their electrons by the GRB to great distances, the abundance of He saturates the He-ionizing UV continuum much closer to the GRB, allowing it to remain in the neutral or singly-ionized state. Helium X-ray absorption explains the correlation with total gas, the lack of strong evolution with redshift, as well as the absence of dust, metal or hydrogen absorption features in the optical-UV spectra.
