- This paper offers some behind-the-scenes insights drawn from the collective fieldwork experiences of the contributors to this Special Issue. These include reflections on: how decisions about modes of accessing research participants fundamentally shape the research process and outcomes; the pitfalls of only focusing on young people’s migratory experiences while ignoring the multiple other dimensions to their lives; how we can best capture and represent young people’s often paradoxical vulnerability and agency; the relative merits of methodological innovations increasingly integrated into work with marginalised and hard to reach communities; and, finally, our own positionality when conducting research with migrant young people and the importance of taking account of how our own subjective, political, philosophical and ethical standpoints influence our interactions throughout our research endeavours. These contributions seek to promote greater reflexivity and transparency among academics conducting ethnographically driven research with young people in the context of forced migration.

- Den här boken handlar om villkor för tjejers delaktighet och inkludering, i samhället och i idrotten. I boken följer vi en verksamhet som vi kallar Bollen, som är särskilt riktad till unga tjejer i den urbana periferin. Bollens övergripande ambition är att – genom fotboll utomhus och inomhus, så kallad futsal – skapa möjlighet för unga tjejer att delta i idrottsaktiviteter med ambitionen att tjejers deltagande i idrott i sin tur ska bidra till inkludering och jämställdhet. I boken undersöker vi hur verksamheten tar form i ett sammanhang präglat av tilltagande social och ekonomisk ojämlikhet, där det bedrivs ett arbete för att på olika vis motverka dessa ojämlikheter, i en bredare strävan efter social förändring. Boken är ett viktigt bidrag i den pågående diskussionen om hur idrotten kan vara ett svar på samhällets utmaningar, såsom tilltagande sociala klyftor och ekonomisk ojämlikhet. Och på vilket sätt idrotten kan möjliggöra deltagande och inkludering.

- This article analyses how youth subject positions of the ‘racialized other’ are produced, and how these positions interconnect with the concept of belonging to the rural community. We do this by analysing 15 group discussions with 63 young people living in rural areas in northern Sweden taking a discursive psychology approach, and focusing on how discourses produce certain subject positions of ‘the racialized other’. Drawing on the concepts of the politics of belonging and the ‘stranger’, we argue that discourses on belonging to the (rural) community create boundaries that exclude ‘other’ youth, as well as resistance and contestation. The subject positions that such discourses produce represent racialized youth in stereotypical ways and imply a promise of belonging for certain ‘others’ based on their fulfilment of particular norms. However, such a depoliticized promise of belonging that places the responsibility for becoming integrated on the ‘others’ was also challenged. Firstly, in relation to criticisms of the welfare system, and secondly, in relation to racism as an unwelcome threat in rural communities.

- This article investigates children’s participation and sense of belonging from the perspective of unaccompanied children, based on two qualitative research projects with unaccompanied children in Sweden and Finland. The results show that the unaccompanied children’s own understanding of their participation and belonging in different positions was fluid; for instance, the borders between childhood and adulthood, and striving for independence or wanting to be cared for by adults were flexible, allowing the children’s movement within and between the categories.

- AbstractThe aim of this three-year research project is to investigate displacements, i.e. changes in the right to housing and food according to the Swedish Social Service Act between 1982-2018, and its implications for the broader issue of social rights in the welfare state. This is done through the notion of advanced legal practices, which refer to incidents where the dominant current law is contested in legal interpretation and application and this involves a transformation of the legal content. Focus of the project is the right to basic social assistance, which comprises emergency aid, including food and housing, for vulnerable EU migrants and undocumented persons. Special focus is children’s situation.Advanced legal practices emerge at different levels and in various juridical spaces, for example when a decision-maker or judge disregards certain conditions or allows jurisdictions to interact in new ways. An example is a resent ruling by the Supreme Administrative Court’s HFD 2017 ref 33, which, through a re- interpretation of the linkage between the Social Service Act and Law on the reception of asylum seekers, destabilized the basic responsibility of the municipalities to provide emergency aid for everyone residing on their territory. Regardless of the underlyingmotives, advanced legal practitioners have consequences for individuals as well as for social rights in general. It is therefore important to understand why and how such practices emerge. The study concentrates on two basic social rights (food and housing) and two groups whose legal status in Sweden is ambiguous. Empirical material are 200 administrative court judgments, individual and group interviews, and local guidelines in three Swedish municipalities of different size with experience of EU-migration and refugee reception – Malmö, Norrköping and Älmhult. Our knowledge acquisition is a dialectic process through continuous collaboration with professionals. An exploration of the law enforcement over time in three municipalities, guided by approaches within legal geography, spatial and temporal dimensions of law are demonstrated.

- Det är viktigt att förstå att rättigheter kan etableras och utvecklas i en viss tid, för att i en annan tid utmanas, urholkas och ersättas av skyldigheter. Olika rättighetskategorier kan få olika tyngd i förhållande till varandra. Ett exempel belyses i detta kapitel, om de mänskliga rättigheternas framväxt i ett internationellt sammanhang. Bland annat behandlar kapitlet hur det kommer sig att ekonomiska och sociala rättigheter har fått en svagare ställning än politiska och medborgerliga rättigheter rent juridiskt. Skillnaden i juridisk tyngd mellan olika rättighetskategorier har på olika sätt betydelse för hur rättigheter institutionaliseras, och i förlängningen även för hur de används i det sociala arbetet och dess vardagliga praktik. Det är till exempel svårare att driva frågor i rättsliga processer som inte har en tydlig juridisk tyngd att falla tillbaka på.

Through narratives of unaccompanied youngsters from 2011 to 2012, this article will illustrate that these youngsters were already struggling with the ambiguous refugee figures of the ‘deserving’ and ‘undeserving’ prior to the events of 2015. By studying their narratives, I analyse how deservingness comes into play in how they constitute themselves as subjects. In their narratives, they describe themselves as responsible, hard-working youngsters in relation to education and future working life. Moreover, their narratives also illustrate how descriptions of diligence and agency are used in order to oppose the discourse figures of unaccompanied minors as threats or victims. I conclude by suggesting that these narratives can be seen as manifestations of conditional belonging centred on deservingness, which the youngsters negotiate also after they have been granted protection.

Conditional Belonging : Listening to Unaccompanied Young Refugees’ Voices

- This thesis explores negotiations of belonging among unaccompanied young refugees in Sweden. The thesis further aims to shed light on methodological aspects of bringing out their voices. The analysis draws on postcolonial and poststructuralist approaches to belonging and relates belonging to the concepts of home, place, racialization and notions of “Swedishness”.The thesis analyses qualitative interviews with 17 young people, who arrived in Sweden as unaccompanied asylum-seeking minors and have been granted permanent residency. The interviews are complemented with walk-alongs and photography-based interviews.Paper 1 gives an overview and discussion of research on unaccompanied asylum-seeking minors. I argue that there is a lack of their voices in the research, and that their own agency and perspectives are not addressed due to a focus on vulnerability and emotional health (or lack thereof). Paper II, which is delimited to participants in a rural village, shows that they negotiate belonging and a sense of home related to places but that othering is constraining. In paper II and III I suggest that the participants’ belongings and position in Sweden can be understood as conditional due to othering and racialization. In paper III, I argue that expressing gratitude can be understood as a form of impression management and, thus be a strategy to negotiate their position in the interview setting as in the host country.I finally argue that in order to understand the participants’ negotiations of belonging attention has to be paid to their agency as well as the conditioning of belonging in discourses and in interactions on the local level.

- The article investigates the ways in which the unaccompanied young refugees talk – or do not talk – about racism and discrimination during the interviews using Goffman’s presentation of self. Qualitative interviews are seen as process where meaning is produced through interaction. The analysis shows that the young people use a range of different strategies such as expressing gratitude, questioning negative stereotypes, minimizing the impact of racism or by presenting themselves as subjected to racism. The article suggests that it may be a challenge to investigate the effects of racism and discrimination in interviews with people who may be subjected to it.

- Recent years have seen increasing attention being paid to unaccompanied asylum-seeking children. This article provides an overview of research in the field and its implications for an understanding of these children as a particularly vulnerable category. The existing research focuses primarily on investigating the children’s emotional well-being from psychiatric and medical perspectives. Moreover, in these studies such emotional problems tend to be linked to previous and current traumatic experiences, in particular separation from their parents. By contrast, this article suggests that a critical need exists for research on unaccompanied children’s life situations based upon exploration of their own perspectives.
