  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The present study has a threefold aim: First, the theoretical aim is to give a contribution to refinement of the theory of dialogue based feminist ethics, concerning the understanding of judgment and narration within such an ethics.  The study also has an empirical aim, defined as to clarify what kind of knowledge, relevant to the moral judgment of an engaged outsider actor, can be received from dialogical interpretation and analysis of a limited selection of critically reflecting life stories. Third, a methodological aim is defined as to develop an approach to interpretation and analysis of reflecting life stories, which renders the storyteller visible as a reflecting moral subject, and makes the story accessible as a source of knowledge for the moral judgment of an engaged outsider actor. The thesis combines philosophical reflection and argumentation, with a narrative-hermeneutic method for interpretation of life stories, relating the two to each other in a hermeneutic process.  The theoretical reflection draws on Seyla Benhabibs theory of communicative ethics. A dialogue based model for moral justification and a likewise dialogue based model for political legitimacy are at the heart of this universalistic theory, although in combination with a conception of a narratively and hermeneutically constituted context sensitive moral judgment, based on Hannah Arendt’s concept “enlarged thought”.In the reflection, this model is related to other feminist theorizing within the tradition of dialogue based feminist ethics, as found in the works of Iris M. Young, Georgia Warnke and Shari Stone-Mediatore. The empirical study draws on three critically reflecting life stories from Israeli-Palestinian women activists for a just peace. The methodology for interpretation and analysis that is worked out combines dialogical interpretation as presented in Arthur W. Frank’s socio-narratology with a method for structural analysis derived from Shari Stone-Mediatores theory of storytelling as an expression of political resistance struggle. The results show that some stories drawing on marginalized experiences have a potential to stimulate further public debate through their capacity to enable a stereoscopic seeing, elucidating a tension between ideologically structured discourse and non-linguistic experience; implying that narrative-hermeneutic competence should be considered crucial for public debate.

  • Jesus och politiken
  • 2024

  • Religious Embodiment between Medicine and Modernity
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Ars Disputandi : The Online Journal for Philosophy of Religion. - 1566-5399. ; 40 (2012), s. 1-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this essay, I discuss how religious embodiment has been and is conceived in relation to other perspectives on embodiment such as the role of medicine in modernity. My focus is on the cultural repre- sentation of embodiment, and the theoretical perspective is phe- nomenological and hermeneutical. I start out from an account of the dissection of the abbess Chiara of Montefalco’s body in 1308 to show how even such a practice as the cutting open of bodies takes on meaning in relation to its context, from the religious search for indi- cations of sanctity to medical autopsies. This is an example of a his- torical displacement of the meaning of embodiment, and to talk re- sponsibly about embodiment in a philosophical context also means to take into account the historicity of embodiment. For a philosophy of religion, then, it is a challenge to talk about religious embodiment in a modern context where medicine has become hegemonic in the cul- tural representation of the body, turning the body into, in essence, a manipulable object. For religion, defined as the subjective, this means that the personal as well as the social embodiment of faith is lost sight of in a process of ‘excarnation.’ For the religious body to occur today in any meaningful sense, there is a need of a refiguration of the understanding of embodiment as such, which can be achieved through phenomenological accounts of embodiment. I end the article with some suggestions how this might look.

  • The aesthetic turn : Exploring the religious dimensions of digital technology
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Approaching Religion. - 1799-3121. ; 6:2, s. 156-163
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The arena for developing digital technology has undergone an aesthetic turn, broadening the focus from a functionalist approach producing centralized systems in the 1970s and 1980s to an increased awareness of the aesthetic aspects of the individual user’s interaction with technology in the 1990s and 2000s. Within the academic research fields studying digital technology (e.g. Human-Computer Interaction and Interaction Design) the aesthetic turn has resulted in a shift from a strong emphasis on user behaviour to an increased interest in aesthetic perspectives on the role of the designer, the design process, and the design material. Within these fields, aesthetics has often been interpreted as belonging to the realm of the individual; personal experiences such as pleasure, engagement, and emotions have been emphasized in both technology development and technology research. Aesthetics is not, however, only an individual phenomenon but also has relational and structural components that need to be acknowledged. Structural aspects of aesthetics condition the possibilities for individuals interacting with digital technology. Thus, the tension between individual and relational aspects of aesthetics in digital technology also reflects a tension between freedom and limitation; between change and permanence; between destabilizing and stabilizing forces. Such a broadened understanding of aesthetics offers a model of digital technology that roughly corresponds to Mark C. Taylor’s definition of religion. Taylor argues that religion is constituted by, on the one hand, a figuring moment characterized by structural stability and universality, and, on the other hand, a disfiguring moment characterized by disruption, particularity, and change. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the aesthetic turn and Taylor’s definition of religion to illustrate similarities between the two, suggesting possible religious dimensions of digital technology and how that can inform our understanding of people’s interaction with digital technology.

  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this thesis I examine the possibility of critically using material from contemporary emotion theory to develop a fruitful model for understanding the potential epistemic relevance of emotions in religious contexts. The relevance of this thesis is mainly twofold: since religion is an emotional phenomenon, the possible normative epistemic role of emotions needs to be examined. This is a question for the philosophy of religion, but not one that has been much explored. Contemporary emotion research provides promising tools for such an examination, but these tools have only been utilized to a minor degree in the field. In chapter 1, the preliminaries for my inquiry is articulated. In chapters 2 and 3, I evaluate psychophysiological, psychological and philosophical emotion research and find that the philosophical reasons and the empirical evidence speak in favor of a perceptual theory of emotion. In chapter 4, I examine how emotions, being perceptions, are of epistemic relevance. Focusing on a metaphysical discourse I come to the conclusion that emotions are of strong epistemic relevance. In chapter 5, I examine the possibility of giving emotions, being perceptions that are of strong epistemic relevance, an epistemological framework. For this I use the pragmatic philosophy of John Dewey and conceive of emotions as habits, or part of habits, which are indispensable for certain human inquiries and knowings. In chapter 6 I turn to religion. I conceptualize religion as lived, and epistemic in that it offers certain goods that agents, being participants in religious spheres of practice, can utilize to deal with existential problems, inter alia, situations involving transcendence. My conclusion is that emotions, given the kind of problems that religious goods can help agents to handle, enable agents to examine the utility of such goods and implement them in their lives. Since this is an epistemic process, and these goods are utilized in many different spheres of practice, I choose to speak of emotions as enabling and justifying religious ways of life. In the end, emotions are about living and hence philosophical work about religious emotions becomes philosophical work about religious practice.

  • Toleransens altare och undvikandets hänsynsfullhet : Religion och meningsskapande bland svenska grundskoleelever
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In contemporary western society, the changing religious diversity brought to the fore a more visible religion. The Swedish school and the Swedish classrooms are no exception. From a perspective of sensemaking and a wide understanding of religion and religious positions this thesis analyses the discourse on religion among pupils (age 9 to 16) in the Swedish elementary school and under what circumstances they do, or do not, talk about religion with each another. This qualitative study includes themes from and contributes to the study of religion, research on children and young people, and particularly to religious education (RE) in Sweden and elsewhere. The results show that the pupils during the interviews showed different and parallel ways of understanding, relate to and way of talking about religion. However, to some degree they seemed to be unwilling to talk about religion with each other, even though they expressed some interest thereof. Two reasons for this were their limited common discourses on religion, and their concern and anxiety to create conflict and to “step on somebody’s toes”. The latter was also combined with their tendency to show tolerance, respect and deference towards each other. Thirdly, due to their partial lack of discourses on religion the pupils had difficulties to position themselves in relation to religion and to understand others. For instance, this came to the fore and was exemplified by the non-Christian Swedish pupils. They seemed to lack categories to speak of themselves in relation to religion and, for instance, answer questions like: “What do you believe in?”.Even though the pupils did not talk much about religion with each other, the result shows that they had several ways of talking about and understanding religion and religious phenomena – for instance based on popular culture. Not all these understandings and discourses on religion where paid attention to in school or in class. Instead, the pupils had to adapt to discourses prevalent in school which narrowed the possible ways of understanding and talking about religion. In line with this, there were several positions in relation to religion – for instance unsure and uncertain positions – in these schools that was not observed. However, these pupils also have the need to express and understand themselves in relation to religion as well as being understood by others. This is a future challenge for RE-research as well as teaching in schools. The results of this study show, lastly, that the experience and desires expressed by the pupils concerning talking about religion differed to a great extent from the use of dialogue in RE-research. Among the pupils it seemed that the conversation about religion was sacrificed on the altars of tolerance, respect and deference. These results were discussed in relation to the concept of safe space, a concept that needs to be elaborated and sharpened further in RE.

  • Caring ability’s within peer groups in Swedish compulsory schools
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In compulsory schools in Sweden there is an ongoing debate on the basic values in the Swedish curriculum, often in reference to violations of current standards in forms of bullying, harassment, discrimination and offensive treatment (Nyström 2011: 11). It would also be interesting to notice the stories and expressions of care and friendship in peer to peer relations. Increased knowledge regarding caring within peer groups, can generate new strategies for the education of basic values stated in the Swedish curriculum.According to the Swedish education act (2010: 800), teachers are assigned to convey not only knowledge but also values. The curriculum stresses the ability to “act responsibly towards themselves and others” (Lgr11). The care perspective is further highlighted in phrasing the aim "can empathise with and understand the situation other people are in and also develops the will to act with their best interests at heart" (Lgr11). The ability to empathize with others is regarded as fundamental from a care ethical perspective as it is the basis for later action (Noddings, 1984: 16).I will display my preliminary results from an interview study whit pupils from Swedish compulsory school focusing on experience of caring in peer to peer relations. From this results I will reason about the possibility of using care ethics as an analytic tool in the work with the basic values in the Swedish curriculum and further the need for a discussion about moral education, highlighting the importance of masculine and feminine coded ethical perspectives in school.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To what extent is working-class literature compatible with religious faith? Wide-spread conceptions of working-class literature exclude this connection, but in the first working-class prose in the early 1900s – in spite of a beginning secularization – Christianity was the official religion, the Bible was a living cultural heritage and the working-class movement and the religious revivalists exchanged members. So, what might a Christian working-class literature look like? How the Christian radical Mathilda Roos’ (1852–1908) fiction relates to that issue is what is investigated in this article. Roos had attracted much attention and debate in her time. As a professed Chris-tian and social radical, she also depicted working-class issues. This article focuses on the intersection of Christianity and class-perspective in the short novel Strejken på Bergstomta [The Strike on Bergstomta] (1892), and to what extent this work might cor-respond to some given or possible conceptions of working-class literature.

  • Wisdom on the Move : Late Antique Traditions in Multicultural Conversation. Essays in Honor of Samuel Rubenson
  • 2020
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wisdom on the Move explores the complexity and flexibility of wisdom traditions in Late Antiquity and beyond. This book studies how sayings, maxims and expressions of spiritual insight travelled across linguistic and cultural borders, between different religions and milieus, and how this multicultural process reshaped these sayings and anecdotes. Wisdom on the Move takes the reader on a journey through late antique religious traditions, from manuscript fragments and folios via the monastic cradle of Egypt, across linguistic and cultural barriers, through Jewish and Biblical wisdom, monastic sayings, and Muslim interpretations. Particular attention is paid to the monastic Apophthegmata Patrum, arguably the most important genre of wisdom literature in the early Christian world.

  • Ingår i: Contemporary Buddhism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1463-9947 .- 1476-7953. ; 17:2, s. 405-426
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • On a mountain hill outside Fredrika, a small village in the rural north of Sweden, a standing Buddha statue and the seated statue of Luang Pho Thuat invoke reverence from visiting Buddhists. The plans of a large-scale temple and meditation centre have also invoked hope of religious tourism and economic growth in an area highly affected by depopulation. The Temple Mount, as it is referred to locally, has, on the one hand, become a source of religious power, not only for Thai Buddhist pilgrims, but also for other religious networks that has established themselves in the area. On the other hand, Fredrika has also become a contested religious space. The article discusses the background of the Temple Mount as well as contrasting examples of usual establishment patterns of Thai Buddhist temples in Sweden, highlighting translocal religious activity at Fredrika, showing how diaspora Thai Buddhism becomes intertwined with other religious networks.

  • Identity and Pluralism : Ethnicity, Religion and Values
  • 2010
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This publication contains presentations from the workshop “Identity and Pluralism” held at Linköping University in Sweden in June 2008.¨The first article by Reevany Bustami, Ellisha Nasruddin and Sarmila Md Sum offers a critique of the ‘diversity and inclusion’ discussions in the present CSR discourse. In doing so, it seeks to expand the parameters of diversity to include the broader community as well as the supply chain networks within which companies exist. It also examines the issues of diversity and pluralism within the context of multi religious and multi ethnic Malaysian society as well as the continuing debates of affirmative action originated from Malaysia’s New Economic Policy (NEP).In their essay on pluralism in Malaysian higher education Ellisha Nasruddin, Reevany Bustami and Ng Sen Fa discuss: 1) key future trends/alternatives within higher education and their cross-impacts; 2) how these trends/alternatives may create undesirable or desirable impact on ethnic pluralism; and 3) roadmap(s) for transformation within higher education vis-a-vis ethnic pluralism. What is the role of Christian churches in Malaysia? Göran Wiking discusses the isolationist characteristics inherent in some Malaysian churches and denominations. Secondly, a brief analysis of the phenomenon is attempted: is this a genuine or just a perceived impediment to national integration? Are there in fact indicators to the contrary, whereby a certain degree of ethnic isolation can serve to strengthen identity and foster more wholesome members of the society at large?Göran Collste discusses one aspect of Malaysian political pluralism; the policy of affirmative action. Affirmative action is favouring Malays and to be Muslim is one of the requirements for being beneficiary of affirmative action. He points at some problems for the policy of affirmative action in a time with increased religious tensions and an increased emphasis on religious affiliation as identity marker. What are the conditions for a real dialogue between members of different ethnic and religious groups? Peter Gan argues that openness to transformation by the other is not strictly speaking an ethic of reducing the other to the self. Rather, it is an orientation that is predicated upon a symmetric self-other relation. In exploring this form of openness, the author attempts to unravel the intricacies embedded within the dialogic process which permeates interethnic, particularly interreligious relations. The concept “secular state” is nowadays often used in both everyday discourse and scholarly debate. Often it comes with normative connotations; that the democratic state should be secular. However, the exact meaning of the concept is not clear. In his essay Marcus Agnafors examines different meanings of the concept “secular state”. He also discusses some arguments commonly presented in support of the idea that the state should, in some sense, be secular. Finally, Anne-Christine Hornborg’s essay deals with the struggle for identity by an Indian tribe in Canada. She discusses the impact of the so called residential school on contemporary Mi’kmaq life worlds and identities, drawing on interviews from fieldworks conducted in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

  • Ingår i: Philosophy East & West. - Hawaii : University of Hawai'i Press. - 0031-8221 .- 1529-1898. ; 61:3, s. 534-546
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article takes as its point of departure the question of how Wilhelm Halbfass, Daya Krishna, and Jitendranath Mohanty have conceptualized tradition in relation to “Indian” philosophy. They have all reacted to, and criticized, homogeneous and static conceptions of Indian philosophies, and by articulating different ways of apprehending tradition they have tried to come to terms with such limiting images. My reading of their texts has been informed by a questioning of how they, in turn, conceptualize tradition. Most of all this is related to the tendency, on the one hand, to stress that tradition is open-ended and dynamic but at the same time to speak of tradition as one singular and universalizable phenomenon, sometimes even as a reified phenomenon (“it”). This discussion is connected to a concern of mine regarding how to conceptualize a plurality and heterogeneity while avoiding a reifying, generalizing language. Toward the end I present a reading of the Nyāyasūtra and how the concept of siddhānta could be understood in the light of three of its commentaries. This reading is here framed as the practical and philosophical outcome of the reflections made in the analysis of Halbfass, Krishna, and Mohanty.

  • Barnets religionsfrihet – en villkorad rättighet? : En filosofisk undersökning utifrån FN:s barnkonvention

  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation uses philosophical tools to examine the child’s right to freedom of religion within the context of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and other international human rights instruments.Article 14 of the CRC establishes the right of the child to freedom of thought, conscience and religion. It also establishes the right of the child's parents to guide and support the child in its exercise of the right to freedom of religion, while adjusting this support according to the child's evolving capacities. The emphasis of the study is on how to understand the child as, on the one hand, agent and subject in the exercise of this right and, on the other, dependent on parental support and guidance. For this purpose, the theoretical underpinnings of the child’s right to freedom of religion are examined with a particular focus on the conceptualization of this right in relation to children. With the text of the CRC as a starting point, different theories on rights, autonomy and religion are analyzed in order to find those compatible with both aspects of Article 14: the child as agent and the child as dependent. Theories that demand fully developed cognitive abilities in order to be a moral agent and a rights holder are rejected, as are theories in which the parents are the sole decision-makers on the basis of their own view of what is in the child's interests. In the same way, conceptions of religion in purely cognitive terms, or not taking into account dimensions of practice and observance accessible to children, are rejected. The conclusion drawn from the analysis is that relational conceptualizations of rights and autonomy and multi-dimensional conceptualizations of religion are best served to include both aspects of the child's right to freedom of religion. In viewing all humans, adults and children alike, as both active agents and vulnerably dependent on others, these conceptualizations challenge traditional views on rights and autonomy, and modern views of religion. In the final chapter, aspects of these relational conceptions are put together into a relational, mutuality-oriented model of the child's right to freedom of religion.

  • Pragmatic Philosophy of Religion : Melioristic Case Studies
  • 2022
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Pragmatic Philosophy of Religion: Melioristic Case Studies, Ulf Zackariasson argues for the fruitfulness of pragmatic philosophy of religion by bringing it to bear on a number of classical topics within the contemporary philosophy of religion. Zackariasson first outlines a version of pragmatic philosophy of religion that takes the pragmatic insistence on the primacy of practice to heart. Here, he shows that religious traditions and their secular counterparts transmit a number of paradigmatic responses that adherents can draw on in their encounters with human life’s existential contingencies. He further discusses the upshot of this approach for how we think of miracles, religious diversity, and what it is to be religiously mistaken. In each case, Zackariasson shows that a pragmatic approach offers important novel perspectives and insights that contemporary (primarily analytic) philosophy of religion tends to neglect. By relating to debates and well-known positions within the contemporary philosophy of religion, he also makes these novel perspectives and insights concrete for those who are not already committed pragmatists. The case studies thus serve as invitations to constructive dialogue within an increasingly pluralistic philosophy of religion.

  • 2016

  • Ingår i: Phenomenology of the Broken Body. Edited by Espen Dahl, Cassandra Falke, and Thor Eirik Eriksen. - New York/London : Routledge. - 9781138616004 ; , s. 87-100
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article I explore how suffering, embodiment and existential health relate to each other through a phenomenological analysis. I am especially interested in how suffering, which I will argue should be distinguished from the experience of pain, relates to human agency, and how suffering becomes a particular mode of being in the world. Suffering is essential for the understanding of human beings as vulnerable creatures. It is through suffering as an ‘active passivity’ that we can transform the experience of pain (or any cause of suffering) to a constructive relationship that could be called ‘existential health’. The first part, on suffering, proceeds through a conceptual analysis of such concepts as ‘suffering’, ‘passion’ and ‘pain’, where the aim is to highlight experiential distinctions between these related concepts. In this part, I take a short historical detour with the help of theology and the idea of the martyr, to clarify some points about the relation between activity and passivity in suffering. The second part, then, tries to understand the bodily conditions of suffering, and especially how it could introduce a distinction between my self and the pain I am experiencing, giving rise to a particular experience of embodiment. The third part deals with existential health with regard to suffering, and how ‘health’ in this aspect might mean an active relationship towards one’s own pain, achieved through the work of suffering. Finally, I conclude that suffering is essential in recognizing the vulnerability of our human creatureliness, and that this might have consequences for how we think about human agency as well as political and social matters.

  • Nurses' conceptions of decision making concerning life-sustaining treatment
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nursing Ethics. - London : Edward Arnold. - 0969-7330 .- 1477-0989. ; 15:2, s. 160-173
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to describe nurses' conceptions of decision making with regard to life-sustaining treatment for dialysis patients. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 13 nurses caring for such patients at three hospitals. The interview material was subjected to qualitative content analysis. The nurses saw decision making as being characterized by uncertainty and by lack of communication and collaboration among all concerned. They described different ways of handling decision making, as well as insufficiency of physician-nurse collaboration, lack of confidence in physicians, hindrances to patient participation, and ambivalence about the role of patients' next of kin. Future research should test models for facilitating communication and decision making so that decisions will emerge from collaboration of all concerned. Nurses' role in decision making also needs to be discussed.

  • Byzantine Tree Life : Christianity and the Arboreal Imagination
  • 2021
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This book examines the many ways Byzantines lived with their trees. It takes seriously theological and hagiographic tree engagement as expressions of that culture’s deep involvement—and even fascination—with the arboreal. These pages tap into the current attention paid to plants in a wide range of scholarship, an attention that involves the philosophy of plant life as well as scientific discoveries of how communicative trees may be, and how they defend themselves. Considering writings on and images of trees from Late Antiquity and medieval Byzantium sympathetically, the book argues for an arboreal imagination at the root of human aspirations to know and draw close to the divine.

  • Challenging life : existential questions as a resource for education
  • 2018
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is increasing recognition today that young people need to have knowledge about religions and world views in order to live and work in diverse societies. What kind of 'maps' are they provided with through religious, values, and ethics education? Does education address the challenging existential questions that children and adolescents ask about life and the world? This volume addresses different aspects of how existential questions have been dealt with in educational research. It especially draws attention to the Swedish research tradition of focusing on life questions and the interpretation of life in education, but with contemporary international research added. It also addresses ethics education and discusses possible options for the future of existential questions as a resource for education.

  • Slavoj Žižek, the Death Drive, and Zombies: A Theological Account
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Modern Theology. - : Wiley. - 0266-7177 .- 1468-0025. ; 29:3, s. 361-380
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, I discuss the question of the hybridity of the religious and the secular through the example of the Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek and his psychoanalytically inspired notion of the undead. The undead is Žižek's rendering of the Freudian death drive, and as the undead is instantiated in the popular culture cliché of the zombies, we need to look no further than to George A. Romero's classic zombie movie Night of the Living Dead from 1968. Thus, this article proceeds in three steps: first, I trace the concept of the death drive from Freud to Žižek, supplemented, for their theological importance, by two contemporary philosophers, Jonathan Lear and Eric Santner. Second, I discuss the zombie in contemporary popular culture, with a focus on Romero's movies, and whether such cinematic representations can function as a kind of cultural critique. In conclusion, I return to the question of theology by showing what Žižek means by theology and contrasting as well as comparing his philosophy to Augustine's anthropology. Despite Žižek's atheistic confession and his dismissal of all pre-modern philosophy and theology, I show that Augustine's anthropology is structurally similar to Žižek's, thus suggesting that the relationship is more complex than Žižek allows. Both are united in rejecting any superficial and transparent understanding of self, and become, consequently, an example of the ambiguous relationship between religion and secularity in contemporary times.

  • Integration of Islam in Europe: Categorical Remarks
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Review. - 1062-7987. ; 28:3, s. 378-388
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the most frequently described cultural borders in European public discourse is that between Europe and Islam. Further to which, there are many concerns as to whether Islam can be integrated into Europe. This article argues that it is impossible to understand the real and imagined problems addressed in the ‘integration of Islam in Europe’ debate using the categories ‘Islam’ and ‘Europe’. The question of categories is addressed through Bourdieu’s critique of journalism’s influence on research, leading to questions about suitable criteria of demarcation and meaningful terminologies. The route goes via classical theorists of science, such as Carnap, Popper and Kuhn, to Ricoeur, Said and Connolly. Some segments of the modern genealogy of the category of Islam in European studies are also touched upon. The article ends with a call for unpopular categories as an escape from the popular and political frames of debate.

  • The Persistence of Christian Realism : A Study of the Social Ethics of Ronald H. Preston
  • 2001
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The persistence of the tradition of Christian Realism in England is exemplified by the lifelong contribution of Anglican moral theologian Ronald H. Preston. The purpose of this study is (1) to systematise, clarify and analyse Preston’s social ethical theory, with particular reference to Christian engagement with economic and political issues; (2) to undertake critical assessment of the ambiguities in Preston’s approach, in relation to the debate within moral philosophy, Christian ethics and political philosophy; and (3) to suggest a constructive proposal for an approach to social ethics in the public sphere that would be reasonable and authentic from a Christian perspective. The study incorporates analysis of one form of Christian ethics and its implications for economic and political issues. Yet, engagement with the public sphere is related to fundamental theological and ethical views. What components make up the sources of Christian ethics, and how do they relate to one another? What are the implications of Christian ethics for normative evaluation of individual and political action? What is the role of economic theory for the interpretation and implementation of ethics? What are the implications of a theological position, of social ethical theory and of the assessment of the role of economic theory for making judgements about economic practice? After clarification and analysis of Preston’s views regarding these different areas of investigation, criteria for an adequate Christian ethical theory are formulated, in order to make a critical assessment of Preston’s approach. The main problems dealt with in this analysis are also of central relevance to the author’s own proposal about the basis for Christian ethics in the public sphere. It is argued that Christian ethics has a particular contribution to make to morality, both for the motivation of ethics and for its content. The study shows that different conceptions of the relation-ship between ethics and a Christian system of belief influence both assessment of human moral possibilities and engagement beyond one’s own social context and tradition. If Christian ethics is based on Creation, Christology and Eschatology, it has resources within itself to be sufficient to engage with economic and political issues, in dialogue and solidarity with those who are excluded from participation in the interpretation of justice and the distribution of power.

  • Etikens ontologiska grund : En analys av Lev Karsavins personalism
  • 2000
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study has the following aims: to survey and elucidate the personalistic philosophy found in the work of the Russian philosopher Lev Karsavin (1882-1952); to analyse his ethics and elucidate its relation to ontology and personality theory; and to critically examine Karsavin's ethics. Karsavin's philosophy is considered with respect for its distinctive character, in which ethics is not constructed as an autonomous theory, but rather is integrated with metaphysics and personality theory. An examination of Karsavin's personalism, with its theory of all-temporality as a level within personal being, allows us to argue that the theoretical model found in Karsavin's work can serve to articulate several important moral experiences. These experiences are not usually discussed within the framework of the philosophical paradigm that strictly separates morality from a possible metaphysical foundation. The experiences which lend themselves to expression within the framework of Karsavin's personalism are experiences of the personality's radical unity, which is revealed in, among other things, an individual's perception of his or her own evil when it appears to be integrated in the whole personality and therefore united with the goodness within it.The critical examination of Karsavin's moral philosophy is conducted according to three criteria: experience, relevance and internal consistency. It is argued that Karsavin has a philosophical language that can be used to discuss significant personal moral experiences as we11 as transcontextually relevant questions. At the same time, Karsavin's theoretical model is seen to have several limitations in that it marginalizes experiences that cannot be expressed within the framework of dl-unity philosophy.
