  • Impact of platinum group element emissions from mining and production activities
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Engineering (Subseries: Environmental Science). - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1863-5520. - 9783662445587 ; 0:9783662445587, s. 19-29
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • South Africa and Russia are the world’s leading platinum group elements (PGE) producers with over 80 % of the global PGE output. Studies performed in the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa and on the Kola Peninsula in Russia show that PGE mining and production activities are important regional PGE sources. Elevated PGE concentrations have been found in snow, soil, road dust, grass, moss and humus collected near PGE mining and production sites. The occurrence of elevated PGE concentrations near mining sites raises concern over environmental effects and exposure of the local population. Studies on the occurrence of PGE in remote environments also suggest that emissions from PGE production activities contribute to the global biogeochemical cycle of the PGE. The loss of PGE during metal production could be as much as 5 % of the global supply and represents a substantial economic loss. Studies on the impact of PGE mining and production activities are few. Further research is needed to better assess the environmental impact of PGE emissions from mining and production activities.

  • Severity of renal impairment in patients with heart failure and atrial fibrillation: implications for non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant dose adjustment
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Heart Failure. - : Wiley. - 1388-9842. ; 18:9, s. 1162-1171
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims: The non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) have varying degrees of renal elimination which may be challenging in patients with heart failure (HF) and atrial fibrillation (AF). We examined the severity and variation in renal impairment, and the proportion of patients requiring NOAC cessation or dose reduction. Methods and results: A retrospective analysis of patients with HF and AF in the Candesartan in Heart failure Assessment of Reduction in Mortality and Morbidity programme was carried out. Trends in renal impairment over 26 months were defined using Cockcroft–Gault (CG), simplified Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD), and Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equations. Mean estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was worse at every time point in patients with AF compared with those without AF, the difference being ∼11 mL/min (CG), 9 mL/min (CKD-EPI), and 7 mL/min (MDRD). As renal function declined, CG classified a greater proportion of patients as having moderate or severe CKD and agreement with MDRD/CKD-EPI declined. At least moderate renal impairment was present in a quarter of patients with AF at baseline, a third by study completion, and approaching a half at least once during follow-up. The projected need for NOAC dose reduction was accordingly high, though it varied between individual NOACs due to different criteria for adjustment. Conclusions: Renal impairment in patients with HF and AF is common, fluctuates, progresses, and frequently mandates NOAC dose reduction, though the need for cessation is rare. Baseline renal function, the method of estimating GFR, and intensity of monitoring should be considered when commencing oral anticoagulation. © 2016 The Authors. • Potentiometric urea biosensor utilizing nanobiocomposite of chitosan-iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 21st International Laser Physics Workshop 23–27 July 2012, Calgary, Canada. - : Institute of Physics (IOP).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The iron oxide (Fe3O4) magnetic nanoparticles have been fabricated through a simple, cheap and reproducible approach. Scanning electron microscope, x-rays powder diffraction of the fabricated nanoparticles. Furthermore, the fabrication of potentiometric urea biosensor is carried out through drop casting the initially prepared isopropanol and chitosan solution, containing Fe3O4 nanoparticles, on the glass fiber filter with a diameter of 2 cm and a copper wire (of thickness −500 μm) has been utilized to extract the voltage signal from the functionalized nanoparticles. The functionalization of surface of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles is obtained by the electrostatically immobilization of urease onto the nanobiocomposite of the chitosan- Fe3O4 in order to enhance the sensitivity, specificity, stability and reusability of urea biosensor. Electrochemical detection procedure has been adopted to measure the potentiometric response over the wide logarithmic concentration range of the 0.1 mM to 80 mM. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles based urea biosensor depicts good sensitivity with ~42 mV per decade at room temperature. Durability of the biosensor could be considerably enhanced by applying a thin layer of the nafion. In addition, the reasonably stable output response of the biosensor has been found to be around 12 sec.

  • A variational approach to the sum splitting scheme
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IMA Journal of Numerical Analysis. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0272-4979 .- 1464-3642. ; 42:1, s. 923-950
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nonlinear parabolic equations are frequently encountered in applications and efficient approximating techniques for their solution are of great importance. In order to provide an effective scheme for the temporal approximation of such equations, we present a sum splitting scheme that comes with a straightforward parallelization strategy. The convergence analysis is carried out in a variational framework that allows for a general setting and, in particular, nontrivial temporal coefficients. The aim of this work is to illustrate the significant advantages of a variational framework for operator splittings and to use this to extend semigroup-based theory for this type of scheme.

  • Betanin inhibits PI3K/AKT/mTOR/S6 signaling pathway, cell growth and death in osteosarcoma MG-63 cells
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Environmental Toxicology. - 1522-7278 .- 1520-4081. ; 38:9, s. 2173-2181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is possible to develop new chemopreventive compounds so that cancer cells can be targeted in an exclusive manner. Bioactive natural compounds have demonstrated to be efficient chemotherapeutic agents, safe and cost-effective. Majority of anti-cancer medications are derived from natural sources, particularly of plant origins. Betanin (betanidin-5-O-β-glucoside) is the most common betacyanin with antioxidant, anti inflammatory and anticancer properties. The present study therefore investigated the effect of betanin onosteosarcoma MG-63 cells. The mechanistic pathway of inflammatory responses, cell proliferation and apoptosis were investigated. The MG-63 cells were treated with betanin for 24 h. Betanin actions on the appearance of cell arrangements, morphological changes, ROS induced Δψm, cell migration, cell adhesion and proliferative mechanistic marker expression of PI3K/AKT/mTOR/S6were analyzed. Betanin inhibited MG-63 cells at IC50 concentrations between 9.08 and 54.49 μM and induced apoptosis by triggering the ROS mechanism. Betanin inhibited proliferation and migration of MG-63 cells and induced DNA fragmentation. Betanin also modified the key mediator expression levels of PI3K/AKT/mTOR/S6 signaling pathways. Betanin can potentially be utilized in bone carcinoma therapeutics to inhibit, reverse or delay osteosarcoma.
