  • Understanding InP Nanowire Array Solar Cell Performance by Nanoprobe-Enabled Single Nanowire Measurements
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6984 .- 1530-6992. ; 18:5, s. 3038-3046
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • III-V solar cells in the nanowire geometry might hold significant synthesis-cost and device-design advantages as compared to thin films and have shown impressive performance improvements in recent years. To continue this development there is a need for characterization techniques giving quick and reliable feedback for growth development. Further, characterization techniques which can improve understanding of the link between nanowire growth conditions, subsequent processing, and solar cell performance are desired. Here, we present the use of a nanoprobe system inside a scanning electron microscope to efficiently contact single nanowires and characterize them in terms of key parameters for solar cell performance. Specifically, we study single as-grown InP nanowires and use electron beam induced current characterization to understand the charge carrier collection properties, and dark current-voltage characteristics to understand the diode recombination characteristics. By correlating the single nanowire measurements to performance of fully processed nanowire array solar cells, we identify how the performance limiting parameters are related to growth and/or processing conditions. We use this understanding to achieve a more than 7-fold improvement in efficiency of our InP nanowire solar cells, grown from a different seed particle pattern than previously reported from our group. The best cell shows a certified efficiency of 15.0%; the highest reported value for a bottom-up synthesized InP nanowire solar cell. We believe the presented approach have significant potential to speed-up the development of nanowire solar cells, as well as other nanowire-based electronic/optoelectronic devices.

  • Growth of one-dimensional nanostructures in MOVPE
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Crystal Growth. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-0248. ; 272:1-4, s. 211-220
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of metal organic vapor-phase epitaxy (MOVPE) for growth of one-dimensional nanostructures in the material systems GaAs, GaP, InAs and InP is investigated. Some kinetic effects are discussed, especially the general finding that in MOVPE thinner whiskers grow faster than thicker whiskers. Effects of growth temperature on growth rate and shape of the whiskers, the effects of different growth directions on the perfection of the materials and the possibilities to grow heterostructures in axial and lateral directions are reported. Ways to overcome the randomness in whisker growth by controlled seeding of the Au particles and by using lithography for site control are demonstrated.

  • IgE sensitization in a cohort of adolescents in southern Sweden and its relation to allergic symptoms
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Clinical and Molecular Allergy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-7961. ; 17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: There is a strong and consistent association between IgE sensitization and allergy, wheeze, eczema and food hypersensitivity. These conditions are also found in non-sensitized humans, and sensitization is found among individuals without allergy-related diseases. The aim of this study was to analyse the sensitization profile in a representative sample of the population, and to relate patterns of allergens and allergen components to allergic symptoms. Methods: A population of 195 adolescents took part in this clinical study, which included a self-reported questionnaire and in vitro IgE testing. Results: Sensitization to airborne allergens was significantly more common than sensitization to food allergens, 43% vs. 14%, respectively. IgE response was significantly higher in airborne allergens among adolescents with rhinitis (p < 0.001) and eczema (p < 0.01). Among 53 children with allergic symptoms according to the questionnaire, 60% were sensitized. Sensitization to food allergens was found among those with rhinitis, but only to PR-10 proteins. None of the participants had IgE to seed storage proteins. Conclusion: The adolescents in this study, taken from a normal Swedish population, were mainly sensitized to grass pollen and rarely to specific food allergens. The major grass pollen allergen Phl p 1 was the main sensitizer, followed by Cyn d 1 and Phl p 2. Sixty-one percent reporting any allergic symptom were sensitized, and the allergen components associated with wheeze and rhinoconjunctivitis were Fel d 4, Der f 2 and Can f 5.

  • Hydrothermally Grown Single-Crystalline Zinc Oxide; Characterization and Modification
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: MRS Proceedings Volume 1035 / 2007. - Warrendale, PA, USA : Materials Research Society.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • An overview of our recent results on characterization and modification of high-resistivity n-type bulk zinc oxide samples, grown by hydrothermal techniques, is given. Three specific topics are addressed; (i) the role of lithium (Li) as an electrically compensating impurity, (ii) extrinsic n-type doping by hydrogen implantation, and (iii) influence of annealing conditions on deep band emission. In (i), furnace annealing of as-grown samples at temperatures above ∼800 °C is shown to cause out-diffusion of residual Li impurities and concurrently, the resistivity decreases. After annealing at 1400 °C, a resistivity close to 10−1 Ωcm is obtained and the Li content is reduced from above 1017 cm−3 to the mid 1015 cm−3 range, providing evidence for the crucial role of Li as an electrically compensating impurity. For ion-implanted samples, vacancy clusters evolve during post-implant flash lamp annealing (20 ms duration) and these clusters appear to trap and deactivate Li with a resulting improvement of the n-type conductivity. However, these clusters have a limited stability and start to dissociate already after 1h at 900 °C, accompanied by a decrease in the conductivity. For topic (ii), n-type doping by hydrogen implantation is shown to enhance the conductivity by about 5 orders of magnitude already in the as-implanted state. Despite substantial loss of hydrogen, the conductivity remains stable, or even increases, after annealing up to ≥600 °C, and necessary conditions for doping by hydrogen are discussed. In (iii), the origin of the commonly observed deep band emission from monocrystalline zinc oxide is investigated using a concept of annealing as-grown samples in different atmospheres. A strong influence by the atmosphere and temperature is observed and the results can be interpreted in terms of dominant effects on the emission by vacancy-related defects.

  • Deviation Detection by Self-Organized On-Line Models Simulated on a Feed-Back Controlled DC-Motor
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceeding Intelligent Systems and Control (ISC 2009). - Cambridge, Mass. : ACTA Press. - 9780889868144
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new approach to improve fault detection is proposed. The method takes benefit of using a population of systems to dynamically define a norm of how the system works. The norm is derived from self-organizing algorithms which generate a low dimensional representation of how selected feature data are correlated. The feature data is selected from the state variables and from the control signals. The self-organizing method and limited number of feature signals enable fast deviation detection and low computational footprint on each system to be analyzed. The comparison analysis between the systems is performed at a service centre, to where the low-dimensional representations of the systems are transmitted. The method is demonstrated on a simulated DC-motor and the results are promising for deviation detection.

  • Characterization of Brown Adipose Tissue in the Human Perirenal Depot
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Obesity. - : Wiley. - 1930-7381 .- 1930-739X. ; 22:8, s. 1830-1837
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ObjectiveTo characterize brown adipose tissue (BAT) in the human perirenal adipose tissue depot. MethodPerirenal adipose tissue biopsies were obtained from 55 healthy kidney donors. Expression analysis was performed using microarray, real-time PCR, immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry. Additional studies using human stem cells were performed. ResultsUCP1 gene expression analysis revealed a large intra-individual variation in the perirenal adipose tissue biopsies. Both multi- and unilocular UCP1-positive adipocytes were detected in several of the adipose tissue samples analyzed by immunohistochemical staining. Microarray analysis identified 54 genes that were overexpressed in UCP1-positive perirenal adipose tissue. Real-time PCR analysis of BAT candidate genes revealed a set of genes that were highly correlated to UCP1 and a set of three transcription factor genes (PRDM16, PGC1, and RXR) that were highly correlated to each other. RXR displayed nuclear immunoreactivity in brown adipocytes and an increased gene expression during brown adipogenesis in human stem cells. ConclusionOur data provides the first molecular characterization of BAT in the perirenal adipose tissue depot. Furthermore, it highlights the transcription factor RXR as a new player in BAT development.

  • Conjugated Pneumococcal Vaccine Triggers a Better Immune Response than Polysaccharide Pneumococcal Vaccine in Patients with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia : A Randomized Study by the Swedish CLL group
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Vaccine. - : Elsevier BV. - 0264-410X .- 1873-2518. ; 36:25, s. 3701-3707
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: To determine if patients with untreated chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) benefit from vaccination with a 13-valent conjugated pneumococcal vaccine (PCV13), Prevenar13®, compared with a 23-valent capsular polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23), Pneumovax®, in terms of immune response. Background: Patients with CLL have an increased risk for infection and Streptococcus pneumoniae is one of the most common pathogens with high morbidity.  Patients with CLL are known to respond poorly to the traditionally used polysaccharide vaccines. Conjugation of polysaccharide to protein carriers renders a thymus-dependent, memory-inducing and more immunogenic vaccine. In patients with CLL, there is no consensus on a recommendation for pneumococcal vaccination, due to a lack of comparative studies. Methods: 128 treatment naïve CLL patients from eight hematology clinics in Sweden were randomized to vaccination with PCV13 (n=63) or PPSV23 (n=65) after stratification by IgG levels and CLL clinical stage (Rai). Blood samples for evaluation of immune response were obtained at baseline, at one and at six months after vaccination. Analyses for each of the 12 pneumococcal serotypes common for PCV13 and PPSV23 were performed by opsonophagocytic assay (OPA) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: PCV13 elicited a superior immune response than PPSV23 in 10/12 serotypes one month after vaccination and in 5/12 serotypes six months after vaccination, measured as OPA geometric mean titers (GMTs). Geometric mean concentrations of serotype-specific IgG antibodies elicited by PCV13 as measured by ELISA, were higher than those elicited by PPSV23 in half of the common serotypes, both after one and six months. The proportion of patients with good response (defined as response in 8 of 12 common serotypes according to predefined response criteria) was higher in PCV13 recipients than in PPSV23 recipients after one month (40% vs. 22%, p=0.034) as well as after six months (33% vs. 17%, p=0.041). Never did PPSV23 trigger a better immune response for any of the serotypes, than PCV13, regardless of analysis. For two of the serotypes, OPA GMTs were lower at the six months than at the one-month follow up. Negative predictive factors for vaccination response were hypogammaglobulinemia and long disease duration. Both vaccines were well tolerated. Conclusions: In patients with previously untreated CLL, the efficacy of PCV13 in terms of immune response is superior to PPSV23 for many serotypes common for the two vaccines. PCV13 should be considered as a part in vaccination programs against Streptococcus pneumoniae for these patients and administered as early as possible during the course of the disease.
