  • IceCube search for neutrinos from GRB 221009A
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 38th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2023). - : Sissa Medialab Srl.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  GRB 221009A is the brightest Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) ever observed. The observed extremelyhigh flux of high and very-high-energy photons provide a unique opportunity to probe the predictedneutrino counterpart to the electromagnetic emission. We have used a variety of methods to searchfor neutrinos in coincidence with the GRB over several time windows during the precursor, promptand afterglow phases of the GRB. MeV scale neutrinos are studied using photo-multiplier ratescalers which are normally used to search for galactic core-collapse supernovae neutrinos. GeVneutrinos are searched starting with DeepCore triggers. These events don’t have directionallocalization, but instead can indicate an excess in the rate of events. 10 GeV - 1 TeV and >TeVneutrinos are searched using traditional neutrino point source methods which take into accountthe direction and time of events with DeepCore and the entire IceCube detector respectively. The>TeV results include both a fast-response analysis conducted by IceCube in real-time with timewindows of T0 − 1 to T0 + 2 hours and T0 ± 1 day around the time of GRB 221009A, as well asan offline analysis with 3 new time windows up to a time window of T0 − 1 to T0 + 14 days, thelongest time period we consider. The combination of observations by IceCube covers 9 ordersof magnitude in neutrino energy, from MeV to PeV, placing upper limits across the range forpredicted neutrino emission.

  • Strong impact of micropollutants on prokaryotic communities at the horizontal but not vertical scales in a subtropical reservoir, China
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Science of the Total Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0048-9697 .- 1879-1026. ; 721
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Micropollutants have become of great concern, because of their disrupting effects on the structure and function of microbial communities. However, little is known about the relative importance of trace micropollutants on the aquatic prokaryotic communities as compared to the traditional physico-chemical characteristics, especially at different spatial dimensions. Here, we investigated free-living (FL) and particle-associated (PA) prokaryotic communities in a subtropical water reservoir, China, across seasons at horizontal (surface water) and vertical (depth-profile) scales by using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Our results showed that the shared variances of physico-chemicals and micropollutants explained majority of the spatial variations in prokaryotic communities, suggesting a strong joint effect of the two abiotic categories on reservoir prokaryotic communities. Micropollutants appeared to exert strong independent influence on the core sub-communities (i.e., abundant and wide-spread taxa) than on the satellite (i.e., less abundant and narrow-range taxa) counterparts. The pure effect of micropollutants on both core and satellite sub-communities from FL and PA fractions was similar to 1.5 folds greater than that of physico-chemical factors at the horizontal scale, whereas an opposite effect was observed at the vertical scale. Moreover, eight micropollutants including anti-fungal agents, antibiotics, bisphenol analogues, stimulant and UV-filter were identified as the major disrupting compounds with strong associations with core taxa of typical freshwater prokaryotes. Altogether, we concluded that the ecological disrupting effects of micropollutants on prokaryotic communities may vary along horizontal and vertical dimensions in freshwater ecosystems.

  • Tourism and heritage in Antarctica : exploring cultural, natural and subliminal experiences
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Polar Geography. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1088-937X .- 1939-0513. ; 45:1, s. 37-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The guidelines on heritage management adopted by the 2018 Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting provide the most recent iteration for an Antarctic tourism sector which had, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, been projected to increase further with various risks and potential impacts requiring careful management. In this paper the role of cultural heritage for tourism prior to the COVID-19 pandemic is examined through three empirical perspectives. First, how the Antarctic cultural heritage is represented through the designation of Historic Sites and Monuments and Site Guidelines for Visitors; then how this is presented through tourism operators’ websites; and, finally, how it is experienced by visitors as narrated in open-source social media information. Each dataset suggests that, while cultural heritage is an important component of an increasingly commodified tourist offering, it is only part of an assemblage of elements which combine to create a subliminal and largely intangible Antarctic experience. In particular, a polarization of the heritage experience between cultural and natural does not appear productive. The paper proposes a more nuanced understanding of heritage tourism in Antarctica which accommodates the notion of a hybrid experience that integrates cultural heritage, the history and stories this heritage represents, and the natural environmental setting.

  • Addition of lenalidomide to intensive treatment in younger and middle-aged adults with newly diagnosed AML : the HOVON-SAKK-132 trial
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Blood Advances. - : American Society of Hematology. - 2473-9529 .- 2473-9537. ; 5:4, s. 1110-1121
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lenalidomide, an antineoplastic and immunomodulatory drug, has therapeutic activity in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), but definitive studies about its therapeutic utility have been lacking. In a phase 3 study, we compared 2 induction regimens in newly diagnosed patients age 18 to 65 years with AML: idarubicine-cytarabine (cycle 1) and daunorubicin and intermediate-dose cytarabine (cycle 2) without or with lenalidomide (15 mg orally on days 1-21). One final consolidation cycle of chemotherapy or autologous stem cell transplantation (auto-SCT) or allogeneic SCT (allo-SCT) was provided according to a prognostic risk and minimal residual disease (MRD)-adapted approach. Event-free survival (EFS; primary end point) and other clinical end points were assessed. A second random assignment in patients in complete response or in complete response with incomplete hematologic recovery after cycle 3 or auto-SCT involved 6 cycles of maintenance with lenalidomide (10 mg on days 1-21) or observation. In all, 392 patients were randomly assigned to the control group, and 388 patients were randomly assigned to lenalidomide induction. At a median follow-up of 41 months, the study revealed no differences in outcome between the treatments (EFS, 44% +/- 2% standard error and overall survival, 54% = 2% at 4 years for both arms) although in an exploratory post hoc analysis, a lenalidomide benefit was suggested in SRSF2-mutant AML. In relation to the previous Dutch-Belgian Hemato-Oncology Cooperative Group and Swiss Group for Clinical Cancer Research (HOVON-SAKK) studies that used a similar 3-cycle regimen but did not pursue an MRD-guided approach, these survival estimates compare markedly more favorably. MRD status after cycle 2 lost prognostic value in intermediate-risk AML in the risk-adjusted treatment context. Maintenance with lenalidomide showed no apparent effect on relapse probability in 88 patients randomly assigned for this part of the study.

  • Cambodian customers' perception of remanufactured automotive parts
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Remanufacturing.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Cambodian economy is growing significantly causing the local car fleet to follow. Consequently, the need for car spare parts is steadily increasing. Unlike other regions inthe world, like Europe, North America and some Asian countries, automotive partremanufacturing in Cambodia has hardly been practised nor analyzed. This research aimsto study the awareness and perception of car owners in Cambodia of remanufactured carparts as alternatives to new spare parts. To reach this aim, primary data was collected toinvestigate the knowledge and the perception of remanufactured car parts amongtowards alternatives to new spare parts (e.g., remanufactured parts). The 425 validresponses from Cambodians were analyzed with descriptive statistics. Evaluating theresponses show, that 70% of respondents were aware of remanufacturing, but theirperception is mostly negative. More than half perceive remanufactured automotive parts asinferior to new counterparts. When being offered alternatives to new parts without using the term 'remanufactured' the willingness to buy is higher than when using the term.

  • Introduction : Posthumanism and the man question
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Posthumanism and the Man Question: Beyond Anthropocentric Masculinities. - London : Taylor & Francis. - 9781000824292 - 9781032113760 ; , s. 1-18
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This introductory chapter provides a rationale for the book, reviews some of the key theoretical underpinnings of posthumanism and new materialism and outlines how they have influenced feminist theorising in relation to debates about the subject, sex, gender, sexual difference, the body, affect, relationality, matter, agency, human and other-than-human entanglements, ecology and technology. The implications of these feminist engagements with posthumanism and new materialism for critical studies of men and masculinities are considered and a posthuman feminist critique of the subject of ‘Man’ as the ideal human is outlined. The authors reflect upon their own biographical intellectual and political journeys of engagement with these issues to ground these debates in their own shifting subjectivities. The chapter concludes with a guide to chapters by the contributors who, from a diverse range of disciplinary backgrounds, bring these theoretical perspectives to life in their own considerations of what posthumanism and new materialism mean for the ‘man question’.

  • An artificial critic of Irish double jigs
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2nd Joint Conference on AI Music Creativity, AIMC. ; , s. 10-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes a component of the music generation system that produced an award-winning tune at The Ai Music Generation Challenge 2020. This challenge involved four Irish traditional music experts judging 35 tunes generated by seven systems in reference to a recognised collection of a specific kind of dance music. The winning system uses an “artificial critic” that accepts or rejects a generated tune based on a variety of criteria related to metric structure and intervalic content. Such an artificial critic can help one explore massive generated music collections, as well as synthesise new training music collections.

  • Editorial for TISMIR Special Collection : AI and Musical Creativity
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Transactions of the International Society for Music Information Retrieval. - : Ubiquity Press, Ltd.. - 2514-3298. ; 5:1, s. 67-70
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This special issue focuses on research developments and critical thought in the domain of artificial intelligence (AI) applied to modeling and creating music. It is motivated by the AI Song Contests of 2020 and 2021, in which the four guest editors adjudicated or participated among many teams from around the world. The 2020 edition had 13 submissions and the 2021 edition had 38. The 2022 edition is now being planned. These unique events provide exciting opportunities for AI music researchers to test the state of the art and push the boundaries of what is possible, within the context of music creation. They portend a future when humans and machines work together as partners in music creation. Maybe "portend" is not the right term, but we must not think that the future of AI and music is only warm and fuzzy. It is important and timely to consider how we, in local and global contexts, can effectively and ethically develop and apply AI in contexts of music creation.

  • Folk the Algorithms : (Mis)Applying Artificial Intelligence to Folk Music
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Handbook of Artificial Intelligence for Music. - Switzerland : Springer Nature.
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter motivates the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to modeling styles of folk music. In this context, we focus particularly on questions about the meaningful evaluation of such AI, and argue that music practitioners should be integral to the research pursuit. We ground our discussion in specific music AI that model symbolic transcriptions of traditional dance music of Ireland and Scandinavia. Finally, we discuss several ethical dimensions of such work.
