  • Priors leading to well-behaved Coulomb and Riesz gases versus zeroth-order phase transitions - a potential-theoretic characterization
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Electronic Journal of Probability. - 1083-6489. ; 26:145, s. 1-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We give a potential-theoretic characterization of measures μ0 which have the property that the Coulomb gas, defined with respect to the prior μ0, is "well-behaved" and similarly for more general Riesz gases. This means that the laws of the empirical measures of the corresponding random point process satisfy a Large Deviation Principle with a rate functional which depends continuously on the temperature, in the sense of Gamma-convergence. Equivalently, there is no zeroth-order phase transition at zero temperature, in the mean field regime. This is shown to be the case for the Hausdorff measure on a compact Lipschitz hypersurface, as well as Lesbesgue measure on a bounded Lipschitz domain. We also provide constructions of priors μ0, absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure on a smoothly bounded domain, such that the corresponding 2d Coulomb exhibits a zeroth-order phase transition. This is based on relations to Ullman’s criterion in the theory of orthogonal polynomials and Bernstein-Markov inequalities.

  • Quantification of Multivalent Interactions by Tracking Single Biological Nanoparticle Mobility on a Lipid Membrane
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 16:7, s. 4382-4390
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Macromolecular association commonly occurs via dynamic engagement of multiple weak bonds referred to as multivalent interactions. The distribution of the number of bonds, combined with their strong influence on the residence time, makes it very demanding to quantify this type of interaction. To address this challenge in the context of virology, we mimicked the virion association to a cell membrane by attaching lipid vesicles (100 nm diameter) to a supported lipid bilayer via multiple, identical cholesterol based DNA linker molecules, each mimicking an individual virion receptor link. Using total internal reflection microscopy to track single attached vesicles combined with a novel filtering approach, we show that histograms of the vesicle diffusion coefficient D exhibit a spectrum of distinct peaks, which are associated with vesicles differing in the number, n, of linking DNA tethers. These peaks are only observed if vesicles with transient changes in n are excluded from the analysis. D is found to be proportional to 1/n, in excellent agreement with the free draining model, allowing to quantify transient changes of n on the single vesicle level and to extract transition rates between individual linking states. Necessary imaging conditions to extend the analysis to multivalent interactions in general are also reported.

  • Synthetic Control Methods for the Evaluation of Single-Unit Interventions in Epidemiology: A Tutorial.
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: American journal of epidemiology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1476-6256 .- 0002-9262. ; 190:12, s. 2700-2711
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Evaluating the impacts of population-level interventions (e.g., changes to state legislation) can be challenging as conducting randomized experiments is often impractical and inappropriate, especially in settings where the intervention is implemented in a single, aggregate unit (e.g., a country or state). A common nonrandomized alternative is to compare outcomes in the treated unit(s) with unexposed controls both before and after the intervention. However, the validity of these designs depends on the use of controls that closely resemble the treated unit on before-intervention characteristics and trends on the outcome, and suitable controls may be difficult to find because the number of potential control regions is typically limited. The synthetic control method provides a potential solution to these problems by using a data-driven algorithm to identify an optimal weighted control unit-a "synthetic control"-based on data from before the intervention from available control units. While popular in the social sciences, the method has not garnered as much attention in health research, perhaps due to a lack of accessible texts aimed at health researchers. We address this gap by providing a comprehensive, nontechnical tutorial on the synthetic control method, using a worked example evaluating Florida's "stand your ground" law to illustrate methodological and practical considerations.

  • Labeling the Good: Alternative Visions and Organic Branding in Sweden in the Late 20th Century
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Enterprise & Society. - : Cambridge University Press (CUP). - 1467-2227 .- 1467-2235. ; 11:4, s. 813-840
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The past decade’s rapid expansion of a global market for organic food has set powerful economic and political forces in motion. The most important dividing line is whether organic food production should be an alternative to or a niche within a capitalist mode of production. To explore this conflict the article analyzes the formation of a market for eco-labeled milk in Sweden. The analysis draws on three aspects: the strategy of agri-business, the role of eco-labeling, and the importance of inter-organizational dynamics. Based on archival studies, daily press, and interviews, three processes are emphasized: the formative years of the alternative movement in the 1970s, the founding of an independent eco-label (KRAV) in the 1980s, and a discursive shift from alternative visions to organic branding in the early 1990s following the entry of agri-business.

  • C12-30 alpha-Bromo-Chloro Alkenes : Characterization of a Poorly Identified Flame Retardant and Potential Environmental Implications
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Technology. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 53:18, s. 10835-10844
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bromo-chloro alkenes (Br-Cl PXAs) have been used for over 30 years as flame retardants and are listed on several national chemical inventories. Very little publicly available information is available on Br-Cl PXAs, and thus preliminary ecological risk screening is challenging due to the lack of basic information such as molecular structure and associated physicochemical properties. Due to their likely similarity with chlorinated paraffins (CPs), Br-Cl PXAs may pose a similar environmental hazard. Several structural databases list such substances as alkenes, although the industrial synthesis involves halogenation of linear alpha-olefins and would be expected to produce linear alkanes. In this study, a combination of high-resolution separation and mass spectrometric techniques were used to characterize a Br-Cl PXA industrial technical product, C12-30 bromo-chloro alpha-alkenes (CAS RN 68527-01-5). The results show this product is dominated by C-18 carbon chain lengths, substituted with 3-7 chlorine atoms and 1-3 bromine atoms on an alkane chain. Long-chain C-18 chlorinated paraffins are also present, although they represent a relatively minor component. Experimental log K-OW (6.9 to 8.6) and estimated log K-OA (10.5 to 13.5) and log K-AW (-5.1 to -0.6) partition coefficients suggest that this chemical will behave similarly to medium- and long-chain CPs as well as other persistent organic pollutants, such as highly chlorinated pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls. The results of this study provide an initial step toward understanding the environmental behavior and persistence of Br-Cl PXAs, highlighting the need for further assessment and re-evaluation of the current structure(s) assigned to these compounds.
