  • Action Research in Circus; Learning the Methods of Teaching the Methods of Artistic Research.
  • 2011
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2011, circus as an art form had only recently entered into the circuits of artistic education at a university level and into artistic research. A working group at the Circus department Stockholm University of the Arts, formely knows as DOCH,  has been teaching, analyzing and documenting a particular course that concerned the methods of artistic exploration in circus. The purpose of the project was to address the following question: which pedagogical methods can we develop to prepare students for the methods of artistic exploration and research, specifically in circus? Or in other words: how can we learn the method of teaching the methods of artistic research in the field of circus? The described project was initiated and directed by Marie-Andrée Robitaille. This documentation was written by Camilla Damkjaer in collaboration with Marie-Andrée Robitaille and the presentation was made with the participation of circus students from the bachelor program in circus arts namely Nathalie Bertholio, Quim Giron Figuerola, Patrik Elmnert.

  • Beyond Neurocinematics: Investigating Biased Social Perception through Collaboration between Neuroscience and Filmmaking
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Leonardo. - : MIT Press - Journals. - 0024-094X .- 1530-9282. ; , s. 278-282
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A growing number of neuroscientific studies use films as experimental stimuli, making filmmakers partners in investigations of the brain. The author provides his perspective as a filmmaker who has been conducting neuroscience experiments in collaboration with a team of neuroscientists at the Brain and Mind Laboratory of Aalto University, Finland, over the last five years. This collaboration led to the development of a novel method of investigating the subconscious brain using films as well as insights on how to create more empathy-evoking films. Finally, the author discusses the relationship between social bias and boundaries of collaboration between filmmaking and neuroscience.

  • Contextual knowledge provided by a movie biases implicit perception of the protagonist
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Social Cognitive & Affective Neuroscience. - London : Oxford University Press. - 1749-5016 .- 1749-5024. ; 14:5, s. 519-527
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We are constantly categorizing other people as belonging to our in-group (‘one of us’) or out-group (‘one of them’). Such grouping occurs fast and automatically and can be based on others’ visible characteristics such as skin color or clothing style. Here we studied neural underpinnings of implicit social grouping not often visible on the face, male sexual orientation. A total of 14 homosexuals and 15 heterosexual males were scanned in functional magnetic resonance imaging while watching a movie about a homosexual man, whose face was also presented subliminally before (subjects did not know about the character’s sexual orientation) and after the movie. We discovered significantly stronger activation to the man’s face after seeing the movie in homosexual but not heterosexual subjects in medial prefrontal cortex, frontal pole, anterior cingulate cortex, right temporal parietal junction and bilateral superior frontal gyrus. In previous research, these brain areas have been connected to social perception, self-referential thinking, empathy, theory of mind and in-group perception. In line with previous studies showing biased perception of in-/out-group faces to be context dependent, our novel approach further demonstrates how complex contextual knowledge gained under naturalistic viewing can bias implicit social perception.

  • Post-Movie Subliminal Measurement (PMSM), for Investigating Implicit Social Bias
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Visualized Experiments. - : MyJove Corporation. - 1940-087X. ; :156
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This protocol describes the use of movies to investigate brain mechanisms underlying implicit social biases during functional magnetic resonance imaging. When the face of a protagonist is presented after a movie subliminally, it evokes an implicit response based on knowledge of the protagonist gained during the movie.

  • After Work : A book about the meaning of Work
  • 2022. - 1
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Economic stress under wage-earning has been abolished. Machines and AI have taken over dirty, heavy and tedious work. Money and social injustice are banned. All the technological resources of humanity can be used to reset the global economy to harmonize with ecology. Free citizens can spend their time in leisure practicing music, art, and poetry.Visions of the future are already here. But is it a utopia that we are seeing materializing around us or a dystopia? What will happen to people when nobody wants their labor? Does there already exist a firm border between those who have a job, with all that it entails in social and economic benefits, and the people that are on the other side of the fence- the people that have to sell their work by the hour, and who in practice are modern slaves under apps and SMS? A division between people who can safely work from home during a pandemic and those who cannot. Is everything for sale? Can you sell voluntary labour? These are some of the questions discussed in the art projects documented in this book.

  • Learning study - a model for practice-based research in a Swedish theatre classroom
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Youth Theatre Journal. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0892-9092 .- 1948-4798. ; 35:1-2, s. 115-128
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents an ongoing research project, which researches theatre as a school subject at high school level in Sweden. The study is an example of practice-based research on teaching and learning and uses the model learning study for its research approach. It is argued that knowledge concerning the meaning of knowing the object of learning, in this case “to impose one ́s will”, is generated using the model. The results are presented as three categories of description and in an outcome space. The categories describe different ways of know- ing the object of learning, in this case how to impose one ́s will (what the character wants) with the purpose of developing the capability to consciously communicate with an audience.

  • Am I Human?
  • 2024
  • Konstnärligt arbeteabstract
    • Am I Human? challenges societal and performative norms surrounding disability and interrogates the boundaries of humanity. By using live performance methods to foreground lived experiences, Am I Human?  initiates critical discussions about identity, agency, and embodiment, recognizing the disabled body as performative and inviting audiences to confront biases and advocate for inclusivity. Asking, “What can be discovered about disabled and identity performativity in relation to how identity is constructed, revealed, and expressed?”, the project explores the intersection of disability, identity, and performance, highlighting an individual’s agency in shaping alternative narratives. Am I Human?  will contribute to discussions on emerging technologies' ethical implications and the disabled’s potential for resistance and innovation. Methods involve performance tools and techniques, media and performance analysis, engagement with post humanist discourse, and academic writing, thereby situating the work within performative and media-based practices. Objectives include challenging normative perceptions of identity, amplifying marginalized voices, and contributing insights into the performativity of identity from a hidden disability perspective. Structured into four phases, including explorations of scenography, the role of the disabled body, bodily augmentations, and materiality, it culminates in a presentation of findings realized as a series of opera scenes. Documentation and exposition will address ethical issues such as dignity, representation, informed consent, and intersectionality. Am I Human?  contributes to wider discussions on disability rights, social justice, and the ethical implications of emerging technologies.

  • När blir sångaren konstnär?
  • 2019
  • Annan publikation (refereegranskat)abstract
