  • Health status in fish in eight polluted coastal sites in Sweden.
  • 2022

    • The health of perch and eelpout were assessed by effect-based methods (including physiological and biochemical endpoints, i.e. biomarkers) in eight different polluted hot spot areas along the Swedish coast. An important purpose was to get an overview of the severity of impacts of environmental pollutants in the polluted areas compared to the reference sites. Taken together, the results suggest moderate to severe impacts on the fish health in all hot spot areas studied. The results indicate that coastal areas act as sources of environmentally harmful substances to the aquatic environment. In addition, the results contributes to the assessment of biological effects of contaminants, which is an important component within EUs Marine Strategy Framework Directive.

  • Fish monitoring in a Swedish reference site - Integrated assessment of eelpout data
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Conference: Pollutant Responses In Marine Organisms (PRIMO21) in May 22-25, 2022 iin Gothenburg, Sweden.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Swedish national fish monitoring in coastal waters is a biomonitoring strategy in uncontaminated areas. The main objectives were set to document long-term time trends and to provide data on natural variation for the biological and chemical variables, and to provide reference data for regional and local monitoring in polluted sites. In the site Fjällbacka, the sentinel fish species eelpout (Zoarces viviparus) has been used for biological effect and chemical monitoring for 30 years. The integrated assessment of eelpout data from Fjällbacka shows that the biological exposure parameters EROD, CAT and GR, indicates that the exposure to harmful compounds in this area have increased during the period. The effect parameters GSI, LSI and Vtg, all of which seem to indicate that the fish physiology/health are affected but not (yet) severely. Chemical analysis show that even though levels of some PCB congeners are above BAC values, they are clearly below EAC values indicating that analyzed chemicals are not responsible for the observed responses. It can be concluded that this integrated assessment shows that the eelpout from Fjällbacka are increasingly exposed to contaminants that potentially affect the health of the fish, but it is not possible to point out specific chemical compounds behind this effect. The selected biomarkers analyzed show that it is therefore possible that contaminants of emerging concern are affecting fish populations along the Swedish west coast.
