  • Can sensation of cold hands predict Raynaud's phenomenon or paraesthesia?

    • Background Raynaud's phenomenon and neurosensory symptoms are common after hand-arm vibration exposure. Knowledge of early signs of vibration injuries is needed. Aims To investigate the risk of developing Raynaud's phenomenon and paraesthesia in relation to sensation of cold hands in a cohort of male employees at an engineering plant. Methods We followed a cohort of male manual and office workers at an engineering plant in Sweden for 21 years. At baseline (1987 and 1992) and each follow-up (1992, 1997, 2002, 2008), we assessed sensation of cold, Raynaud's phenomenon and paraesthesia in the hands using questionnaires and measured vibration exposure. We calculated risk estimates with univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses and adjusted for vibration exposure and tobacco usage. Results There were 241 study participants. During the study period, 21 individuals developed Raynaud's phenomenon and 43 developed paraesthesia. When adjusting the risk of developing Raynaud's phenomenon for vibration exposure and tobacco use, the odds ratios were between 6.0 and 6.3 (95% CI 2.2-17.0). We observed no increased risk for paraesthesia in relation to a sensation of cold hands. Conclusions A sensation of cold hands was a risk factor for Raynaud's phenomenon. At the individual level, reporting a sensation of cold hands did not appear to be useful information to predict future development of Raynaud's phenomenon given a weak to moderate predictive value. For paraesthesia, the sensation of cold was not a risk factor and there was no predictive value at the individual level.

  • Computer Vision Algorithms for Intelligent Transportation Systems Applications

    • In recent years, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) have emerged asan efficient way of enhancing traffic flow, safety and management. Thesegoals are realized by combining various technologies and analyzing the acquireddata from vehicles and roadways. Among all ITS technologies, computervision solutions have the advantages of high flexibility, easy maintenanceand high price-performance ratio that make them very popular fortransportation surveillance systems. However, computer vision solutionsare demanding and challenging due to computational complexity, reliability,efficiency and accuracy among other aspects. In this thesis, three transportation surveillance systems based on computervision are presented. These systems are able to interpret the imagedata and extract the information about the presence, speed and class ofvehicles, respectively. The image data in these proposed systems are acquiredusing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) as a non-stationary sourceand roadside camera as a stationary source. The goal of these works is toenhance the general performance of accuracy and robustness of the systemswith variant illumination and traffic conditions. This is a compilation thesis in systems engineering consisting of threeparts. The red thread through each part is a transportation surveillancesystem. The first part presents a change detection system using aerial imagesof a cargo port. The extracted information shows how the space isutilized at various times aiming for further management and developmentof the port. The proposed solution can be used at different viewpoints andillumination levels e.g. at sunset. The method is able to transform the imagestaken from different viewpoints and match them together. Thereafter,it detects discrepancies between the images using a proposed adaptive localthreshold. In the second part, a video-based vehicle's speed estimationsystem is presented. The measured speeds are essential information for lawenforcement and they also provide an estimation of traffic flow at certainpoints on the road. The system employs several intrusion lines to extractthe movement pattern of each vehicle (non-equidistant sampling) as an inputfeature to the proposed analytical model. In addition, other parameters such as camera sampling rate and distances between intrusion lines are alsotaken into account to address the uncertainty in the measurements and toobtain the probability density function of the vehicle's speed. In the thirdpart, a vehicle classification system is provided to categorize vehicles into\private car", \light trailer", \lorry or bus" and \heavy trailer". This informationcan be used by authorities for surveillance and development ofthe roads. The proposed system consists of multiple fuzzy c-means clusterings using input features of length, width and speed of each vehicle. Thesystem has been constructed by using prior knowledge of traffic regulationsregarding each class of vehicle in order to enhance the classification performance.

    • Speed measurement is one of the key components of intelligent transportation systems. It provides suitable information for traffic management and law enforcement. This paper presents a versatile and analytical model for a video-based speed measurement in form of the probability density function (PDF). In the proposed model, the main factors contributing to the uncertainties of the measurement are considered. Furthermore, a guideline is introduced in order to design a video-based speed measurement system based on the traffic and other requirements. As a proof of concept, the model has been simulated and tested for various speeds. An evaluation validates the strength of the model for accurate speed measurement under realistic circumstances.

    • Vehicle classification has a significant use in traffic surveillance and management. There are many methods proposed to accomplish this task using variety of sensorS. In this paper, a method based on fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering is introduced that uses dimensions and speed features of each vehicle. This method exploits the distinction in dimensions features and traffic regulations for each class of vehicles by using multiple FCM clusterings and initializing the partition matrices of the respective classifierS. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach is successful in clustering vehicles from different classes with similar appearanceS. In addition, it is fast and efficient for big data analysiS.

  • Svenskt Vatten Utveckling Elektronisk tunga och andra onlinesensorer för detektion av föroreningar i dricksvattennätet – en utvärdering

    • Projektet har utvärderat olika onlinesensorer för att upptäcka föroreningar från avloppsvatten i dricksvattennätet. Flera kommersiella sensorer kunde detektera inläckage vid koncentrationer av avloppsvatten på cirka 0,7 procent, men bäst var den nyutvecklade sensor som kallas elektronisk tunga. Den kunde med låg sannolikhet för falsklarm detektera ner till åtminstone 0,05 procent avloppsvatten. Vanliga problem som kan ge upphov till smitta via dricksvatten är gamla och läckande ledningsnät som ger tryckfall, eller felaktiga kopplingar som gör att ytvatten och avloppsvatten kan förorena dricksvattnet. Risken för inläckage av avloppsvatten ansågs i projektet vara det högst prioriterade scenariot. Med ett nätverk av sensorer i dricksvattennätet och ett effektivt övervakningssystem skulle man kunna upptäcka och lokalisera föroreningskällan och ingripa med nödvändiga åtgärder innan det förorenade vattnet når kunderna.Projektet utfördes av Tekniska verken i Linköping i samverkan med Totalförsvarets forskningsinstitut (FOI) och ett stort antal andra aktörer. I en referensgrupp ingick ett antal svenska dricksvattenproducenter som ställde upp viktiga kriterier för onlinesensorer i dricksvattennätet. Sensorerna ska vara billiga, robusta, driftsäkra, anpassade för driftmiljön och kräva lite underhåll. De ska inte behöva förbehandling eller reagenser och bör helst mäta direkt på det trycksatta nätet. De bör helst vara generella, det vill säga upptäcka alla typer av föroreningar, men det är ett stort mervärde om de kan klassificera typen av förorening. Den elektroniska tungan har vidareutvecklats inom Vinnovaprojektet Sensation III. Även de nya sensorerna flödescytometer och elektronisk näsa testades i projektet, liksom standardsensorer för konduktivitet, pH och kloröverskott, samt en avancerad sensor baserad på optisk absorbans. Testerna skedde i en rigg på avloppsreningsverket i Linköping under ett par månader då olika koncentrationer av avloppsvatten tillfördes. Även syntetiskt avloppsvatten och råvatten tillfördes vid några tillfällen. Två elektroniska tungor testades även vid en tryckstegringsstation respektive vid vattentornet under cirka ett år. Olika typer av signalbehandling undersöktes för att optimera larmalgoritmerna.Resultaten visar att det är möjligt att upptäcka inläckage av avloppsvatten i dricksvattnet med hjälp av onlinesensorer. Även standardsensorer för konduktivitet och pH kunde detektera inläckage av avloppsvatten, men bäst resultat gav den elektroniska tungan. Sensorn för optisk absorbans hade en detektionsgräns mellan den elektroniska tungan och standardsensorerna. I anläggningar med större utspädning av avloppsvattnet än i Linköping kommer sensorerna förmodligen att ha en högre detektionsgräns.För att det ska bli möjligt att övervaka dricksvattenkvaliteten med hjälp av onlinesensorer krävs det nära samverkan mellan sensortillverkare, dricksvattenproducenter och -distributörer, eftersom det behövs fortsatta tester och är så svårt att kravställa och bestämma prestandan för sensorerna för alla tänkbara vatten.

  • Autoregressive model for multi-pass SAR change detection based on image stacks

    • Change detection is an important synthetic aperture radar (SAR) application, usually used to detect changes on the ground scene measurements in different moments in time. Traditionally, change detection algorithm (CDA) is mainly designed for two synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images retrieved at different instants. However, more images can be used to improve the algorithms performance, witch emerges as a research topic on SAR change detection. Image stack information can be treated as a data series over time and can be modeled by autoregressive (AR) models. Thus, we present some initial findings on SAR change detection based on image stack considering AR models. Applying AR model for each pixel position in the image stack, we obtained an estimated image of the ground scene which can be used as a reference image for CDA. The experimental results reveal that ground scene estimates by the AR models is accurate and can be used for change detection applications. © 2018 SPIE.

  • Experiences of a One-hour Algorithm in Chest Pain Patients With a Nonelevated Troponin T at Presentation.

    • Background: We aimed to evaluate the use of a 1-hour measurement of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) in an emergency department (ED) population of chest pain patients with a nonelevated baseline hs-cTnT and to examine the prevalence of early dynamic changes in hs-cTnT and the association with admission rate, diagnosis, and outcome.Methods: All patients with a chief complaint of chest pain presenting to the ED of Karolinska University Hospital, Solna, Sweden, from December 2014 to September 2015 who had a baseline hs-cTnT of ≤14 ng/L and a second value obtained within >30 to ≤90 minutes were followed for 30 days regarding admission, readmission, myocardial infarction (MI), and death.Results: A total of 1091 patients were included. Dynamic 1-hour changes in hs-cTnT defined as an increase or decrease of ≥3 ng/L occurred in 23 patients (2.1%). Fifteen patients (65.2%) in the dynamic group were admitted, compared with 148 patients (13.9%) in the nondynamic group (P < 0.001). Four of the admitted patients (26.7%) in the dynamic and 1 (0.7%) in the nondynamic group were diagnosed with an MI (P < 0.001). No death or MI occurred within 30 days among those discharged from the ED.Conclusions: Dynamic 1-hour changes in hs-cTnT were uncommon but associated with a higher rate of admission and of MI in an unselected population of chest pain patients with a nonelevated hs-cTnT at presentation. Lack of dynamic changes makes MI highly unlikely, and a 1-hour measurement may facilitate an early rule out of MI but should be used together with clinical assessment.
