  • Bone vascularization and growth in placoderms (Vertebrata) : The example of the premedian plate of Romundina stellina Ørvig, 1975
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Comptes rendus. Palevol. - : Elsevier BV. - 1631-0683 .- 1777-571X. ; 9:6-7, s. 369-375
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Placodermi (armored jawed fishes), which appeared during the Lower Silurian and disappeared without leading any descendants at the end of the Famennian (Latest Devonian), have the highest diversity of known Devonian vertebrate groups. As phylogenetically basal gnathostomes (jawed vertebrates), they are potentially informative about primitive jawed vertebrate anatomy and origins. Until recently, the study of their internal or histological structures has required destructive methods such as sectioning or serial grinding. Recent advances in tomography and imaging technologies, especially through the increasing use of synchrotron phase contrast imaging for the study of fossils, allow us to reveal the inner structures of the fossil nondestructively and with unprecedented three-dimensional level of detail. Here, we present for the first time the prerostral anatomy of the small acanthothoracid Romundina stellina, one of the earliest and most basal placoderms. Phase contrast imaging allows us to reconstruct the vascularization and nerve canals of the premedian plate and adjacent parts of the skeleton three-dimensionally in great detail, providing important clues to the growth modes and biology of the animal.

  • Degradation of phenol and cresols at low temperatures using a suspended-carrier biofilm process
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Chemosphere. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-1298 .- 0045-6535. ; 55:1, s. 45-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Degradation of phenol and o-, m- and p-cresol at a concentration of 150 mg; l(-1) of each compound was studied in a suspended-carrier biofilm process consisting of two aerobic stages. The fungus Mortierella sarnyensis Mil'ko dominated the microflora. in the first reactor, while bacteria dominated in the second reactor. The process was studied at 4, 7, 11 and 15 degreesC. The results from the experiments showed the process to be relatively efficient even at 4 degreesC. The degradation rate was 33% of that at 15 degreesC for o-cresol. Both phenol and the cresols were degraded in the first reactor and a new peak appeared in the HPLC-chromatograms indicating the formation of one or more intermediate compounds in the first stage. These compounds were however degraded to below the detection limit in the second reactor. Small new peaks appeared in the chromatograms of the outlet from the second reactor at the maximum loading rates. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Ethernet based distributed data acquisition system for a small animal PET
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science. - 0018-9499 .- 1558-1578. ; 53:4, s. 2112-2117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the design of a small animal PET scanner being developed at our institutes. The existing setup is the first version of the miniPET machine consisting of four detector modules. Each detector module consists of an 8 x 8 LSO scintillator crystal block, a position sensitive photomultiplier, a digitizer including a digital signal processing board and an Ethernet interface board. There is no hardware coincidence detection implemented in the system and coincidence is determined based on a time stamp attached to every event by a digital CFD algorithm. The algorithm is implemented in the digital signal processing board and generates a time stamp with a coincidence resolution of less than 2 us. The data acquisition system is based on Ethernet network and is highly scalable in size and performance.

  • A micromachined dual-axis beam steering actuator for use in a miniaturized optical space communication system
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering. - : IOP Publishing. - 0960-1317 .- 1361-6439. ; 20:10, s. 105007-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The design, fabrication and evaluation of an electrothermally actuated micromachined beam steering device for use in a free-space optical communication system intended for use on micro-and nanospacecraft in kilometer-sized formations are presented. SU-8 confined in v-grooves is heated to create bending movement in two orthogonal directions for two-axial steering with large static bending angles and low actuation voltages. Standard MEMS processing is used to fabricate the devices with square mirror side lengths of 1, 3.5 and 5 mm. In addition, a method to prevent thermal damage to SU-8 during deep reactive ion etching has been successfully developed. Characterization shows optical scan ranges larger than 40 degrees in both directions with the maximum driving voltage of 16 V corresponding to a total power consumption of 1.14 W. Infrared imaging is used to investigate thermal cross-talk between actuators for the two scanning directions. It is found that a silicon backbone on the joint backside is crucial for device performance. Differences from expected performance are believed to arise from the SU-8 curing process and excessive heating during fabrication. A finite element method simulation is used to find the eigenfrequencies of the structures, and these are in good agreement with the measured frequency response.

  • CASPER: Carbon-Aware Scheduling and Provisioning for Distributed Web Services
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ACM International Conference Proceeding Series. ; 28 October 2023, s. 67-73
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There has been a significant societal push towards sustainable practices, including in computing. Modern interactive workloads such as geo-distributed web-services exhibit various spatiotemporal and performance flexibility, enabling the possibility to adapt the location, time, and intensity of processing to align with the availability of renewable and low-carbon energy. An example is a web application hosted across multiple cloud regions, each with varying carbon intensity based on their local electricity mix. Distributed load-balancing enables the exploitation of low-carbon energy through load migration across regions, reducing web applications carbon footprint. In this paper, we present CASPER, a carbon-aware scheduling and provisioning system that primarily minimizes the carbon footprint of distributed web services while also respecting their Service Level Objectives (SLO). We formulate CASPER as an multi-objective optimization problem that considers both the variable carbon intensity and latency constraints of the network. Our evaluation reveals the significant potential of CASPER in achieving substantial reductions in carbon emissions. Compared to baseline methods, CASPER demonstrates improvements of up to 70% with no latency performance degradation.

  • Hybrid Resource Management for HPC and Data Intensive Workloads
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 19th IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Cluster, Cloud and Grid Computing (CCGRID). - Los Alamitos : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781728109138 - 9781728109121 ; , s. 399-409
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditionally, High Performance Computing (HPC) and Data Intensive (DI) workloads have been executed on separate hardware using different tools for resource and application management. With increasing convergence of these paradigms, where modern applications are composed of both types of jobs in complex workflows, this separation becomes a growing overhead and the need for a common computation platform for both application areas increases. Executing both application classes on the same hardware not only enables hybrid workflows, but can also increase the usage efficiency of the system, as often not all available hardware is fully utilized by an application. While HPC systems are typically managed in a coarse grained fashion, allocating a fixed set of resources exclusively to an application, DI systems employ a finer grained regime, enabling dynamic resource allocation and control based on application needs. On the path to full convergence, a useful and less intrusive step is a hybrid resource management system that allows the execution of DI applications on top of standard HPC scheduling systems. In this paper we present the architecture of a hybrid system enabling dual-level scheduling for DI jobs in HPC infrastructures. Our system takes advantage of real-time resource utilization monitoring to efficiently co-schedule HPC and DI applications. The architecture is easily adaptable and extensible to current and new types of distributed workloads, allowing efficient combination of hybrid workloads on HPC resources with increased job throughput and higher overall resource utilization. The architecture is implemented based on the Slurm and Mesos resource managers for HPC and DI jobs. Our experimental evaluation in a real cluster based on a set of representative HPC and DI applications demonstrate that our hybrid architecture improves resource utilization by 20%, with 12% decrease on queue makespan while still meeting all deadlines for HPC jobs.

  • Use of medical resources and indirect costs of otitis media in Sweden
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian journal of public health. - : SAGE Publications. - 1651-1905 .- 1403-4948. ; 39:2, s. 137-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims: To estimate the use of medical resources and the societal impact of otitis media (OM) in children less than five years of age in Sweden. Methods: An internet survey questionnaire was administered to a sample of parents with children <5 years of age. The survey covered socio-demographic data, characteristics of the OM episode, use of medical resources, productivity loss by the caregivers, and travel-related costs. Medical doctor confirmed OM (MD-OM) was defined as symptoms of earache or ‘‘running’’ ear, and/or a diagnosis of OM provided by a medical doctor. Results: Of all MD-OM episodes (n = 91), in 47% a general practitioner had been consulted, in 21% a paediatrician, and in 23% an emergency department had been visited. Hospital admission occurred in one case. The MD prescribed antibiotics in 85% and over the counter drugs were bought in 69% of the episodes. In 57% of the MD-OM episodes the caregivers lost days from a paid job (mean 30.3 hours per episode, SD 19.6). In 30% of the episodes, parents reported productivity loss at work during their child’s illness (mean 9.0 hours per episode, SD 12.4). The mean costs were estimated to be 6,385 SEK (575) per episode of MD-OM resulting in an economic burden to Sweden of 743,570,000 SEK (66,920,866). Fifty eight per cent of the costs were indirect non-medical costs. Conclusions: The medical and economic burden of OM is considerable to individual families as well as to society in Sweden. This study has filled a gap in the knowledge base on the impact of OM on society.

  • Free amino acids in aerosol samples collected over the central Arctic Ocean in summer
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Size-resolved airborne particle samples collected over the central Arctic Ocean in summer, during the Arctic Ocean expedition (AOE)-2001, have with regard to dissolved free amino acids (DFAAs) been analysed. Serine, alanine, aspartic acid followed by glutamatic acid was the dominating amino acids in the DFAA fraction. The high concentrations of serine found in all blanks must be taken into consider discussing its contribution. The total concentration of DFAAs in the bulk aerosols, with serine excluded ranged from 13-89 pmol/m3, which agree well with previous less size-resolved data reported for remote areas. The DFAA fraction was shown to explain <0.7% of the total particle mass collected on the substrate. The size distribution of the DFAAs showed enrichment towards the submicron mode with a factor of 2-3 compare to the coarse mode. As the DFAAs were found in sizes corresponding to either film or jet drops, or to both, the surface micro layer was suggested to be their source. A comparison of the reported DFAA composition with amino acid data obtained for simultaneously collected micro layer samples, showed no clear relation. Ongoing oxidation of proteins and peptides on the sampling substrate combined with the considerable variation of the amino acid composition in the microlayer over time and sampling site may explain the obtained differences.
