- In this chapter, I propose a model of an artistic creative process, based on study of my own creative processes over twenty years of activities as composer and improviser. The model describes the creative process as a structured exploration of the space of the possible, emphasising the interplay between a dynamic concept and the changing material form of the work. Combining ideas, tools, material and memory, creativity is described as a coherent, dynamic, and iterative process that navigates the space of the chosen medium, guided by the tools at hand, and by the continuously revised ideas, significantly extending previous spatial models of creativity. This involves repeated misinterpretation and coincidences, which are crucial in human creative processes, adding meaning and depth to the artwork. A few examples from real life are given as illustrations of the model, together with a discussion of phenomena such as appreciation, skill and collaborative creativity. Finally, I discuss how the proposed model could form a foundation for computer implementations of artistic creative process, to increase our understanding of human creativity, and to possibly enable believable artistic behaviour in machines.

- A live performance of 10-15 minutes by Palle Dahlstedt on a custom built instrument, using a simple pencil drawing as a gestural interface for controlling complex analog synthesis (on a Bugbrand Modular). The instrument works by creating a voltage potential field in the graphite/pencil markings on the paper using custom movable electrodes made from coins. Then, control voltages are extracted from other points on the paper, controlling various aspects of the synthesized sound.

- Ett verk för självspelande piano, dator och musiker. Ett komplext system av fyra virtuella musiker kontrolleras gestiskt från 16 trycksensorer, med hjälp av en mappningsteknik som jag utvecklat under de senaste åren. Det musikaliska resultatet är en komplex improvisativ pianomusik, som på makronivå kontrolleras i ögonblicket av tonsättaren, samtidigt som dess detaljer är komplexa och oförutsägbara.

- I ett delprojekt i Palle Dahlstedts VR-stödda forskningsprojekt Creative Performance ingår forskaren och musikern Per Anders Nilsson. Delprojektet är inriktat mot datormedierade interaktionsmodeller för musikalisk improvisation, som i korthet innebär att speciellt utvecklade mjukvaror interagerar och/eller intervenerar med medverkande musiker. Dynamic Triads är en interaktiv improvisationsmiljö för tre musiker med icke specificerade instrument, akustiska eller elektroniska. Musikerna är förenade i en kedja som innebär att alla deltagare har direktkontakt med varandra. Genom att spela på sitt eget instrument kontrollerar varje musiker det inspelade ljudet från en annan musiker, och ger samtidigt sitt ljud till nästa musiker. Varje musiker spelar sitt eget instrument samtidigt som hon påverkar sina medmusikers agerande via datorn. Resultatet är kombinerade klanger, och att musikerna ikläder sig varandras klangdräkt. Detta skapar en helt ny situation för musikerna, och påverkar hur de spelar och interagerar. Vi har inom forskningsprojektet studerat hur systemet hanteras av musiker, studenter och professionella, och hur de gradvis lär sig att utnyttja och integrera systemet i sitt eget musikaliska uttryck. Dynamic Triads är på ett sätt ett verk av Palle Dahlstedt, och samtidigt är de deltagande musikerna i högsta grad medskapande.

- Choreographer Ami Skånberg Dahlstedt has created a performance investigating class and gender of historic female street performers Shirabyoshi, who, trained in music, dance and poetry, performed dressed like male priests with sword, long hakama pants and a tall hat. How did they move? How did they manage their ambiguous position belonging both to the streets and the court? They could easily be replaced and thus lose social position, home and income. At the heart our performance are the Imayo (”modern”) songs of the Heian time. What was important in the arts of the Heian period and how can we relate to it? Ami is exploring the border between modern dance expression and the classical, ritual Japanese Buyo dance. Two musicians/composers contribute their perspectives to the performance: Kumiko Nonaka (Kyoto) constantly widens the range and outreach of the nohkan flute, bringing intimate knowledge of and new melodies for the Imayo Songs. Palle Dahlstedt (Gothenburg) combines studies in Noh music with advanced Western composition training and state-of-the art electronic music research. The objectives are to create an artistic synthesis, to bring it to a new audience and to show how these old artistic expressions can live – not only as a conserving museal craft, but as a powerful part of contemporary artistic expression.

- Foldings is a work for piano and electronics, developed 2011-2012, reconstructing the piano as a hybrid electronic/acoustic instrument, augmenting its timbre through complex processing and advanced mapping techniques, developed within Palle Dahlstedt’s research project Creative Performance. These new modes of expression, while using only the traditional klavier, also invite and encourage new ways of playing, and this forms the basis for the musical content of the work. Two or three sound engines are used, each with very different character and suitable interaction patterns, performed as two or three different movements.
