  • On resilient control of dynamical flow networks
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Annual Reviews in Control. - : Elsevier BV. - 1367-5788. ; 43, s. 80-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Resilience has become a key aspect in the design of contemporary infrastructure networks. This comes as a result of ever-increasing loads, limited physical capacity, and fast-growing levels of interconnectedness and complexity due to the recent technological advancements. The problem has motivated a considerable amount of research within the last few years, particularly focused on the dynamical aspects of network flows, complementing more classical static network flow optimization approaches. In this tutorial paper, a class of single-commodity first-order models of dynamical flow networks is considered. A few results recently appeared in the literature and dealing with stability and robustness of dynamical flow networks are gathered and originally presented in a unified framework. In particular, (differential) stability properties of monotone dynamical flow networks are treated in some detail, and the notion of margin of resilience is introduced as a quantitative measure of their robustness. While emphasizing methodological aspects -including structural properties, such as monotonicity, that enable tractability and scalability- over the specific applications, connections to well-established road traffic flow models are made.

  • A systems and control perspective of CPS security
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Annual Reviews in Control. - : PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD. - 1367-5788 .- 1872-9088. ; 47, s. 394-411
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The comprehensive integration of instrumentation, communication, and control into physical systems has led to the study of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs), a field that has recently garnered increased attention. A key concern that is ubiquitous in CPS is a need to ensure security in the face of cyber attacks. In this paper, we carry out a survey of systems and control methods that have been proposed for the security of CPS. We classify these methods into three categories based on the type of defense proposed against the cyberattacks: prevention, resilience, and detection & isolation. A unified threat assessment metric is proposed in order to evaluate how CPS security is achieved in each of these three cases. Also surveyed are the risk assessment tools and the effect of network topology on CPS security. Furthermore, an emphasis has been placed on power and transportation applications in the overall survey.

  • A robust interaction control approach for underwater vehicle manipulator systems
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Annual Reviews in Control. - : Elsevier. - 1367-5788 .- 1872-9088. ; 46, s. 315-325
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In underwater robotic interaction tasks (e.g., sampling of sea organisms, underwater welding, panel handling, etc) various issues regarding the uncertainties and complexity of the robot dynamic model, the external disturbances (e.g., sea currents), the steady state performance as well as the overshooting/undershooting of the interaction force error, should be addressed during the control design. Motivated by the aforementioned considerations, this paper presents a force/position tracking control protocol for an Underwater Vehicle Manipulator System (UVMS) in compliant contact with a planar surface, without incorporating any knowledge of the UVMS dynamic model, the exogenous disturbances or the contact stiffness model. Moreover, the proposed control framework guarantees: (i) certain predefined minimum speed of response, maximum steady state error as well as overshoot/undershoot concerning the force/position tracking errors, (ii) contact maintenance and (iii) bounded closed loop signals. Additionally, the achieved transient and steady state performance is solely determined by certain designer-specified performance functions/parameters and is fully decoupled from the control gain selection and the initial conditions. Finally, both simulation and experimental studies clarify the proposed method and verify its efficiency.

  • Survey on time-delay approach to networked control
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Annual Reviews in Control. - : Elsevier. - 1367-5788 .- 1872-9088. ; 48, s. 57-79
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper provides a survey on time-delay approach to networked control systems (NCSs). The survey begins from a brief summary on fundamental network-induced issues in NCSs and the main approaches to the modelling of NCSs. In particular, a comprehensive introduction to time-delay approach to sampled-data and networked control is provided. Then, recent results on time-delay approach to event-triggered control are recalled. The survey highlights time-delay approach developed to modelling, analysis and synthesis of NCSs, under communication constraints, with a particular focus on Round-Robin, Try-once-discard and stochastic protocols. The time-delay approach allows communication delays to be larger than the sampling intervals in the presence of scheduling protocols. Moreover, some results on networked control of distributed parameter systems are surveyed. Finally, conclusions and some future research directions are briefly addressed.

  • Mathematical modeling of endocrine regulation subject to circadian rhythm
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Annual Reviews in Control. - : Elsevier BV. - 1367-5788 .- 1872-9088. ; 46, s. 148-164
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine awarded for discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm has called attention to the challenging area of nonlinear dynamics that deals with synchronization and entrainment of oscillations. Biological circadian clocks keep time in living organisms, orchestrating hormonal cycles and other periodic rhythms. The periodic oscillations of circadian pacemakers are self-sustained; at the same time, they are en trainable by external periodic signals that adjust characteristics of autonomous oscillations. Whereas modeling of biological oscillators is a well-established research topic, mathematical analysis of entrainment, i.e. the nonlinear phenomena imposed by periodic exogenous signals, remains an open problem. Along with sustained periodic rhythms, periodically forced oscillators can exhibit various "irregular" behaviors, such as quasiperiodic or chaotic trajectories. This paper presents an overview of the mathematical models of circadian rhythm with respect to endocrine regulation, as well as biological background. Dynamics of the human endocrine system, comprising numerous glands and hormones operating under neural control, are highly complex. Therefore, only endocrine subsystems (or axes) supporting certain biological functions are usually studied. Low-order dynamical models that capture the essential characteristics and interactions between a few hormones can than be derived. Goodwin's oscillator often serves as such a model and is widely regarded as a prototypical biological oscillator. A comparative analysis of forced dynamics arising in two versions of Goodwin's oscillator is provided in the present paper: the classical continuous oscillator and a more recent impulsive one, capturing e.g. pulsatile secretion of hormones due to neural regulation. The main finding of this study is that, while the continuous oscillator is always forced to a periodic solution by a sufficiently large exogenous signal amplitude, the impulsive one commonly exhibits a quasiperiodic or chaotic behavior due to non-smooth dynamics in entrainment.

  • Automated learning with a probabilistic programming language: Birch
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Annual Reviews in Control. - : Elsevier. - 1367-5788 .- 1872-9088. ; 46, s. 29-43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work offers a broad perspective on probabilistic modeling and inference in light of recent advances in probabilistic programming, in which models are formally expressed in Turing-complete programming languages. We consider a typical workflow and how probabilistic programming languages can help to automate this workflow, especially in the matching of models with inference methods. We focus on two properties of a model that are critical in this matching: its structure—the conditional dependencies between random variables—and its form—the precise mathematical definition of those dependencies. While the structure and form of a probabilistic model are often fixed a priori, it is a curiosity of probabilistic programming that they need not be, and may instead vary according to random choices made during program execution. We introduce a formal description of models expressed as programs, and discuss some of the ways in which probabilistic programming languages can reveal the structure and form of these, in order to tailor inference methods. We demonstrate the ideas with a new probabilistic programming language called Birch, with a multiple object tracking example.

  • Information-theoretic approaches to privacy in estimation and control
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Annual Reviews in Control. - : PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD. - 1367-5788 .- 1872-9088. ; 47, s. 412-422
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Network control systems (NCSs) heavily rely on information and communication technologies for sharing information between sensors and controllers as well as controllers and actuators. When estimation, control or actuation tasks in a NCS are performed by an untrusted party, sharing information might result in the leakage of private information. The current paper reviews some of the recent results on the privacy-aware decision-making problems in NCSs. In particular, we focus on static and dynamic decision-making problems wherein privacy is measured using information-theoretic notions. We also review the applications of these problems in smart buildings and smart grids.

  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reviews the vast literature on static output feedback design for linear time-invariant systems including classical results and recent developments. In particular, we focus on static output feedback synthesis with performance specifications, structured static output feedback, and robustness. The paper provides a comprehensive review on existing design approaches including iterative linear matrix inequalities heuristics, linear matrix inequalities with rank constraints, methods with decoupled Lyapunov matrices, and non-Lyapunov-based approaches. We describe the main difficulties of dealing with static output feedback design and summarize the main features, advantages, and limitations of existing design methods. • A survey of distributed optimization
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Annual Reviews in Control. - : PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD. - 1367-5788 .- 1872-9088. ; 47, s. 278-305
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In distributed optimization of multi-agent systems, agents cooperate to minimize a global function which is a sum of local objective functions. Motivated by applications including power systems, sensor networks, smart buildings, and smart manufacturing, various distributed optimization algorithms have been developed. In these algorithms, each agent performs local computation based on its own information and information received from its neighboring agents through the underlying communication network, so that the optimization problem can be solved in a distributed manner. This survey paper aims to offer a detailed overview of existing distributed optimization algorithms and their applications in power systems. More specifically, we first review discrete-time and continuous-time distributed optimization algorithms for undirected graphs. We then discuss how to extend these algorithms in various directions to handle more realistic scenarios. Finally, we focus on the application of distributed optimization in the optimal coordination of distributed energy resources.
