(O)ändligt vatten : En studie om hur förskolebarn som kännare engageras i samhälleliga miljöfrågor

- Syftet med den här avhandlingen i förskoledidaktik är att tillsammans med förskolebarn på olika sätt utforska aktören vatten för att därigenom undersöka former och metoder för engagemang och medverkan i samhälleliga och naturvetenskapliga miljöfrågor. Mer specifikt är syftet att i ett praktiskt utforskande med förskolebarn och vatten – som aktör och mer-än-mänsklig samarbetspartner – undersöka hur eller med vilka metoder det är möjligt att producera ett engagemang, i vilket förskolebarnet är både kännare och kännande, i vår samtids centrala miljöfrågor. Teoretiska och metodologiska utgångspunkter för detta projekt tas i posthumanistiska kunskapsskapande praktiker med Isabelle Stengers, Donna Haraway och Anna L. Tsing som främsta inspirationskällor. Det praktiska utforskandet med barn i åldrarna 3–5, med arbetsnamnet vattenprojektet, har genomförts som en posthumanistisk interventionsstudie där forskaren installerat sig i två förskolors befintliga pågående praktiker, för att under nio månader tillsammans med barn och vatten utforska lokala vatten- och miljöfrågor. Forskningsprocessen utgick från barnens situerade här-och-nu kunskaper och lokala frågor om vatten och miljöfrågor, samt mångdisciplinära resurser i form av såväl kunskaper som metoder från geovetenskap och förskoledidaktik. Datamaterial, i form av teckningar, anteckningar, digitala bilder och filmer har producerats av förskolebarn och forskare gemensamt, och analyserats med stöd av posthumanistisk teori och berättande som metod inspirerat av Stengers, Haraway och Tsing. I ett sådant berättande formas och rekonstrueras text, bild, film och teori till nya narrativ som identifierar och problematiserar relationer mellan olika aktörer på samma eller på olika skalor, från molekylär till global. Det är dessa nyskapade och nyskapande berättelser med barn som kännare och medproducenter av kunskap tillsammans med vatten och andra aktörer; exempelvis problemet torka och dess effekter för liv eller problemet avloppsvatten i dagens samhälle, som sammantagna utgör forskningens resultat. Denna sammanläggningsavhandling består av en kappa och tre forskningsartiklar. Den första artikeln behandlar hur vatten kom att produceras som metod i utforskandet av vilka miljöfrågor som var angelägna förskolebarnen. Den andra artikeln handlar om förskolebarns, forskares och vattenspecialisters samhandlande med den hydrosociala cykeln. Den tredje artikeln fokuserar miljöundervisning i förskolan och uppmärksammar förskolebarns och forskares engagemang i vattenrening, med start i förskolebarns situerade kunskap om förorenat vatten och deras frågor om hur vatten kan renas.

- Starting from the assumptions of feminist perspectives from various forms of re-invented humanities, this chapter approaches the major research question of how better to re-tie the material and immaterial knots between past, present and future generations for heritage research. This is a research question guiding us in our project on deep-time interventions and intragenerational care that we explore here through the multi-temporal site of the Gärstad waste-to-energy plant. This plant resides just outside the town of Linköping in south-east Sweden, a site we often pass by on our way home or to the university. The over-arching intent of our research is to contribute to the sociocultural and material transformations needed for us all to become more gracious ancestors for multispecies generations to come.

- Mitt bland sop-bergen på Gärstadverken i Linköping så berättar Prof Åsberg och prof Fredengren om miljöhumaniora och varför det behövs en mindre snäv (mer-än-mänsklig) etik för att vi alla i samhället ska kunna ta oss an plaster och annat miljöskräp som vi för vidare till framtida generationers människor - och till hela ekologier på land, i hav och i kroppar.- Hur kan vi bli bättre förmödrar till framtida generationer i Antropocen-åldern? Först måste vi, argumenterar Åsberg, sätta människor inte bara i kulturell och samhällelig kontext utan också i vår ekologiska kontext. Sedan måste vi ta ombord icke-mänskliga krafter, som plastens effekter, djur och teknik i den kulturella kontexten - göra det icke-mänskliga och det mer-än-mänskliga del av den kulturella analysen och samhällsförståelsen. Det är ju inte bara vissa männskors handlande så får effekter i världen, utan många krafter samverkar.

- This cross-disciplinary exploration delves into the multifaceted intersec-tions of technology, embodiment, identity, and ecology through the lens of cyborg knowing. The first contribution focuses on the vulnerabilities faced by individuals with implantable cardiac defibrillators (ICDs), emphasizing the crucial need for acclimatization strategies and agency in navigating their cybernetic embodiment as “everyday cyborg”. The second contribu-tion critically examines cultural technologies revealing their role in perpet-uating biases and advocates for interdisciplinary approaches, drawing on feminist STS and cyborg theory, to adaptively reshape societal constructs. Lastly, the third contribution envisions a comprehensive theory of cyber-zoa that extends the cyborg figuration to encompass nonhuman animals, fostering a post-anthropocentric perspective and an ecologically attuned examination of power relations, exploitation, and symmetrical relation-ships. By engaging with the concept of the cyborg, these contributions shed light on the complex dynamics and transformative potentials inher-ent in the realm of technology for both human and nonhuman lives

Proteome deconvolution of liver biopsies reveals hepatic cell composition as an important marker of fibrosis

- Human liver tissue is composed of heterogeneous mixtures of different cell types and their cellular stoichiometry can provide information on hepatic physiology and disease progression. Deconvolution algorithms for the identification of cell types and their proportions have recently been developed for transcriptomic data. However, no method for the deconvolution of bulk proteomics data has been presented to date. Here, we show that proteomes, which usually contain less data than transcriptomes, can provide useful information for cell type deconvolution using different algorithms. We demonstrate that proteomes from defined mixtures of cell lines, isolated primary liver cells, and human liver biopsies can be deconvoluted with high accuracy. In contrast to transcriptome-based deconvolution, liver tissue proteomes also provided information about extracellular compartments. Using deconvolution of proteomics data from liver biopsies of 56 patients undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery we show that proportions of immune and stellate cells correlate with inflammatory markers and altered composition of extracellular matrix proteins characteristic of early-stage fibrosis. Our results thus demonstrate that proteome deconvolution can be used as a molecular microscope for investigations of the composition of cell types, extracellular compartments, and for exploring cell-type specific pathological events. We anticipate that these findings will allow the refinement of retrospective analyses of the growing number of proteome datasets from various liver disease states and pave the way for AI-supported clinical and preclinical diagnostics.

Troubled Atmosphere – On Noticing Air

- Through the lense of four different art projects, Troubled Atmosphere – On Noticing Air looks at hybrid, layered, inconsistent, muddled, unruly, contaminated gatherings of air, inquiring how air has been conceptualised and perceived, and how the construction of aerial imaginaries enables specific ways of engaging with the world and excludes others. Paying attention to the materiality, relationality and performativity of air, noticing air is explored as a methodology to consider how air, approached as a naturalcultural and technoecological phenomenon, is made perceptible and knowable under historically specific circumstances, perceptual systems, and politics of representation. For this, air is addressed through the artworks Being With (2015), The World Indoors (2015), In the Vast Ocean of Air (2016), and Often People Ask How Birds Are Affected by the Air (2017), and through corresponding texts structured around specific material-semiotic figures – the body, plants, clouds, PM2.5 (minute airborne particulate matter) – which substantiate air, and its technoscientific assemblages, and propose diversified ways of noticing air. Subject to chemical, biological, geological, technological and cultural processes and transformations, air is modified, structured, and compartmentalised, rendered inherently political with effects, consequences, and health impacts distributed unevenly and unjustly. Considering how noticing air can be expanded to reconsider relations and relatings with air that may contribute to the long-term collective feminist undertaking of reimagining liveable and breathable worlds for the many, the dissertation reflects upon the transformative role of environmental concepts and imaginaries. More specifically, it poses the author's interdisciplinary collaboration with researcher in ecology Agata Marzecova as an example of how to bring theory, criticism, and scientific research together with art and poetics, and how meaningful experimentation with formats, languages, and different ways of knowing may allow for thicker, more layered and nuanced approaches for noticing air.

- The book is aimed at providing an assertion of Gender Studies as a vital community in our time, united in a commitment to inquiry. It brings forward an interdisciplinary set of early career researchers’ accounts of their motives for engaging in Gender Studies and, of the encounters with limitations as well as possibilities they experience on the paths they have chosen. Each chapter is accompanied by a brief response paper where a more senior researcher involves in conversation with respective chapter’s content and shares reflections regarding Gender Studies, its integration, and developments. The first level corresponds with the significance of research in the field and its transformative power in and, crucially, outside the academia. The second relates to the value of networking and community building for doing research. The book presents Gender Studies in a communicative, open manner that invites the reader to engage in and continue the displayed discussions. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of gender studies, sociology, queer studies, women’s studies, trans studies, anthropology, and literary studies.

- Ai technologies are increasingly used by artists and creatives, and they as any other (technological) artefacts are embedded with the values and practices part of their historical development. These, for example, include desensitized embodied orientations of being in the world, involving practices such as disregard, abuse, and exploitation of non-human (e.g. the climate) and human (e.g. gender and racialization in relation to power). Our relation to the world and how technologies get designed are formed by our socio-cultural practices, values and norms - such as the predominant human-centered value sets (with embedded imbalances in favouring some humans more than others) and the Euro-modern perception that assumes a divide between human culture and nonhuman nature [18, 19, 27]. Sustaining practices of embedding such values does not necessarily serve the kinds of futures we want to make in terms of democracy, environmental, and social sustainability, and we argue that they should be re-thinked and critiqued. Thus, in this paper, we develop a critique of Creative-Ai through exposing tensions in the artifacts and agents situated in the ’Creative-Ai phenomena’ through speculative care imaginaries and by taking a feminist post-humanist orientation. We address the question of how care imaginaries/speculations can help us to unpack these desensitized and human-centered values and practices potentially embedded in Creative-Ai. We hope this paper to spark discussions and imaginaries on alternative ways of being with and thinking about Creative-Ai technologies particularly through the lens of ’care’. We conclude by discussing alternative care imaginaries as a method to reveal and in turn diversify the value sets and perspectives engaged in constructing Creative-Ai in the communities partaking in constructing these emerging technologies.
