  • The structures of complexes between polyethylene imine and sodium dodecyl sulfate in D2O : a scattering study
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry B. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-6106 .- 1520-5207. ; 109:1, s. 167-174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The association between a highly branched polyelectrolyte with ionizable groups, polyethylene imine (PEI), and an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), has been investigated at two pH values, using small-angle neutron and light scattering. The scattering data allow us to obtain a detailed picture of the association structures formed. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements in solutions containing highly charged PEI at low pH and low SDS concentrations indicate the presence of disklike aggregates. The aggregates change to a more complex three-dimensional structure with increasing surfactant concentration. One pronounced feature in the scattering curves is the presence of a Bragg-like peak at high q-values observed at a surfactant concentration of 4.2 mM and above. This scattering feature is attributed to the formation of a common well-ordered PEI/SDS structure, in analogue to what has been reported for other polyelectrolyte-surfactant systems. Precipitation occurred at the charge neutralization point, and X-ray diffraction measurements on the precipitate confirmed the existence of an ordered structure within the PEI/SDS aggregates, which was identified as a lamellar internal organization. Polyethylene imine has a low charge density in alkaline solutions. At pH 10.1 and under conditions where the surfactant was contrast matched, the SANS scattering curves showed only small changes with increasing surfactant concentration. This suggests that the polymer acts as a template onto which the surfactant molecules aggregate. Data from both static light scattering and SANS recorded under conditions where SDS and to a lower degree PEI contribute to the scattering were found to be consistent with a structure of stacked elliptic bilayers. These structures increased in size and became more compact as the surfactant concentration was increased up to the charge neutralization point.

  • A small-angle neutron and static light scattering study of micelles formed in aqueous mixtures of a nonionic alkylglucoside and an anionic surfactant
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry B. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-6106 .- 1520-5207. ; 109:25, s. 12387-12393
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The size and shape of micelles formed in aqueous mixtures of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the nonionic sugar-based surfactant n-decyl beta-D-glucopyranoside (C(10)G) at different concentrations of added salt have been investigated with small-angle neutron and static light scattering. Rather small prolate ellipsoidal micelles form in the absence of added salt and at [NaCl] = 10 mM in D2O. The micelles grow considerably in length to large rods as the electrolyte concentration is raised to [NaCl] = 0.1 M. In excess of nonionic surfactant ([SDS]/[C(10)G] = 1:3) at [NaCl] = 0.1 M in D2O, several thousands of Angstroms long wormlike micelles are observed. Most interestingly, a conspicuously large isotope solvent effect was observed from static light scattering data according to which micelles formed at [SDS]/[C(10)G] = 1:3 and [NaCl] = 0.1 M in H2O are at least five times smaller than micelles formed in the corresponding samples in D2O.

  • A multi-disciplinary study of Phanerozoic landscape development in West Greenland
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland Bulletin: Review of Survey activities 2006. - 1604-8156. ; :13, s. 33-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The western margin of the Greenland craton has been muchless stable in the Phanerozoic than previously thought. Thisnew insight has come from close integration of independentdata sets: geomorphological analysis of large-scale landscapes, apatite fission track analysis (AFTA), onshore and offshorestratigraphy and analysis of onshore fault and fracture sys -tems. Each data set records specific and unique parts of theevent chronology and is equally important to establish a con-sistent model. A key area for understanding the Mesozoic-Cenozoic landscape evolution and into the present is theuplifted part of the Nuussuaq Basin, where remnants of pla-nation surfaces cut across the Cretaceous to Eocene sedimen-tary and volcanic rocks. Our integrated analysis concludedthat the West Greenland mountains were formed by lateNeogene tectonic uplift (Fig. 1) and also provided newinsight into early Phanerozoic development. To understandour model, we present the different methods and the resultsthat can be deduced from them.

  • Decreased peritoneal tissue plasminogen activator during prolonged laparoscopic surgery.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: The Journal of surgical research. - : Elsevier BV. - 1095-8673 .- 0022-4804. ; 151:1, s. 89-93
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Peritoneal fibrinolysis is crucial in the peritoneal healing processes and subsequent adhesion formation. During conventional surgery, the peritoneal fibrinolytic system is rapidly disturbed. Short-term laparoscopy does not seem to affect peritoneal fibrinolysis. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of prolonged laparoscopic surgery on peritoneal fibrinolysis. METHODS: Twelve consecutive patients undergoing laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery for morbid obesity were included in the study. During the procedure, biopsies of the parietal peritoneum were taken at the start of the procedure and each 45 min afterward. Tissue samples were homogenized and tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) antigen, tPA activity, urokinase-type PA antigen, and plasminogen activating inhibitors type 1 antigen were measured using commercial assay techniques. RESULTS: Both tPA antigen and its activity progressively decreased during the procedure, reaching significant levels after 90 min of surgery. The levels of uPA antigen and plasminogen activating inhibitors antigen did not significantly change throughout the procedure. CONCLUSIONS: As for conventional surgery, prolonged laparoscopic surgery causes a decreased fibrinolytic activity in the peritoneum due to decreased tPA levels.

  • Peritoneal transforming growth factor beta-1 expression during laparoscopic surgery: a clinical trial.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Surgical endoscopy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1432-2218 .- 0930-2794. ; 21:9, s. 1537-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta1) is a growth factor involved in various biologic processes, including peritoneal wound healing and dissemination of malignancies. Laparoscopic surgery is evolving rapidly, and indications are increasing. The peritoneal TGF-beta1 expression during laparoscopic surgery is unknown. METHODS: For this study, 50 patients scheduled for laparoscopic cholecystectomy were randomized into five groups, then surgically treated with various pressures, light intensities, and dissection devices. Peritoneal biopsies were taken at the beginning and end of surgery. Tissue concentrations of total and active TGF-beta1 were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) techniques. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in either total or active TGF-beta1 concentration between peritoneal biopsies taken at the start of surgery and samples taken at the end of the procedure. Patients who underwent surgery with the ultrasonic scalpel had significant lower levels of both active (p < 0.005) and total (p < 0.01) TGF-beta1 at the end of surgery than patients treated with electrocautery. Patients who had surgery with a high light intensity had significantly lower levels of total TGF-beta1 levels (p < 0.005) with an unchanged active part than patients who had surgery with low light intensity. CONCLUSION: The choice of dissection device and the light intensity used in laparoscopic surgery affect peritoneal TGF-beta1 concentrations, indicating that peritoneal biology can be affected by laparoscopic surgery. Because TGF-beta1 is involved in various biologic processes in the peritoneal cavity, this observation may have important clinical consequences.
