  • The ABC130 barrel module prototyping programme for the ATLAS strip tracker
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 1748-0221. ; 15:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For the Phase-II Upgrade of the ATLAS Detector [1], its Inner Detector, consisting of silicon pixel, silicon strip and transition radiation sub-detectors, will be replaced with an all new 100% silicon tracker, composed of a pixel tracker at inner radii and a strip tracker at outer radii. The future ATLAS strip tracker will include 11,000 silicon sensor modules in the central region (barrel) and 7,000 modules in the forward region (end-caps), which are foreseen to be constructed over a period of 3.5 years. The construction of each module consists of a series of assembly and quality control steps, which were engineered to be identical for all production sites. In order to develop the tooling and procedures for assembly and testing of these modules, two series of major prototyping programs were conducted: an early program using readout chips designed using a 250 nm fabrication process (ABCN-250) [2, 3] and a subsequent program using a follow-up chip set made using 130 nm processing (ABC130 and HCC130 chips). This second generation of readout chips was used for an extensive prototyping program that produced around 100 barrel-type modules and contributed significantly to the development of the final module layout. This paper gives an overview of the components used in ABC130 barrel modules, their assembly procedure and findings resulting from their tests.

  • The co-occurrence of neurodevelopmental problems in dyslexia
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Dyslexia. - : Wiley. - 1076-9242 .- 1099-0909. ; 27:3, s. 277-293
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The primary aim of this study was to explore the overlaps between dyslexia and a range of neurodevelopmental disorders and problems (NDPs), specifically symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, atypical sensory perception and developmental coordination disorder. Capitalizing on a population-based sample of twins, secondary aims included estimating the heritability of dyslexia and reporting on the measurement characteristics of the scale used to assess dyslexia. A telephone interview regarding symptoms of dyslexia and other NDPs was conducted with parents of 1,688 nine-year-old twins. The prevalence and the heritability of dyslexia were estimated at 8 and 52%, respectively. The boy: girl ratio was 1.5:1. Results revealed that there was more than an eightfold increase in (diagnostic proxy) NDPs prevalence in the dyslexia group as compared to typical readers. Quantitatively measured symptoms of inattention, oral language problems and atypical sensory perception significantly predicted dyslexia status in a multivariate analysis. By contrast, ASD-related inflexibility was inversely associated with dyslexia in the multivariate model. In sum, dyslexia often overlaps with other NDPs. The current study provides new knowledge supporting the position to move beyond isolated diagnostic categories into behavioural profiles of co-occurring problems when trying to understand the pattern of strengths and needs in individuals with dyslexia.

  • Understanding the effect of bondcoat surface treatment on enhanced lifetime of suspension plasma sprayed thermal barrier coatings
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Surface & Coatings Technology. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA. - 0257-8972 .- 1879-3347. ; 482
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are extensively used in gas turbine engines in power generation and aerospace applications. Improvements in TBC performance and lifetime are continuously pursued by the gas turbine industry. Suspension plasma spraying (SPS) has shown promising results in recent years as it could produce a porous columnar TBC microstructure exhibiting low thermal conductivity and high durability. Further improvements in lifetime and fundamental understanding of failure mechanisms would lead to their wider application. Lifetime of a TBC system is dependent not only on the topcoat microstructure and chemistry, but also on topcoat-bondcoat interface and bondcoat characteristics as they influence the growth rate of thermally grown oxide (TGO) layer as well as the mismatch stresses generated in the topcoat during operation. Moreover, in SPS TBCs, the column density and porosity in the topcoat are also affected by the bondcoat surface roughness which in turn affects TBC lifetime. In previous work, it was shown that bondcoat surface treatment by shot peening followed by light grit blasting can significantly enhance the cyclic lifetime of SPS TBCs. The objective of this work was to gain further insight into the lifetime improvements due to surface treatment of bondcoat. Commercial NiCoCrAlY powder was deposited by high velocity air fuel (HVAF) and high velocity oxy fuel (HVOF) spraying while SPS was used to deposit yttria stabilised zirconia topcoat. Before spraying the topcoat, the bondcoat samples were subjected to vacuum heat treatment, shot peening, and/or grit blasting. Residual stress measurements were performed by X-ray diffraction on samples with different variants of bondcoat treatments and compared with Almen strip tests. The lifetime was examined by thermal cyclic fatigue testing. The relationships between changes in bondcoat surface roughness, residual stress state and microstructure due to surface treatments, and resultant topcoat microstructure and lifetime were studied and discussed.

  • Biomarker support for ADHD diagnosis based on Event Related Potentials and scores from an attention test
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Psychiatry Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-1781. ; 300
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ADHD is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder associated with dysfunctions in several brain systems. Objective markers of brain dysfunction for clinical assessment are lacking. Many studies applying electroencephalography (EEG) and neuropsychological tests find significant differences between ADHD and controls, but the effect sizes (ES) are often too small for diagnostic purposes. This study aimed to compute a diagnostic index for ADHD by combining behavioral test scores from a cued visual go/no-go task and Event Related Potentials (ERPs). Sixty-one children (age 9-12 years) diagnosed with ADHD and 69 age- and gender-matched typically developing children (TDC) underwent EEG-recording while tested on a go/no-go task. Based on comparisons of ERP group-means and task-performance, variables that differed significantly between the groups with at least moderate ES were converted to a five points percentile scale and multiplied by the ES of the variable. The sum-scores of the variables constituted the diagnostic index. The index discriminated significantly between patients and TDC with a large ES. This index was applied to an independent sample (20 ADHD, 21 TDC), distinguishing the groups with an even larger ES. The diagnostic index described has the potential to support assessment. Further research establishing diagnostic indexes for differential diagnoses is needed.

  • Long-term medication for ADHD (LMA) trial: 2-year prospective observational study in children and adolescents. Core symptoms, daily functioning, and comorbidity outcomes
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: EUROPEAN ARCHIVES OF PSYCHIATRY AND CLINICAL NEUROSCIENCE. - 0940-1334 .- 1433-8491.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • More knowledge is needed about long-term ADHD medication and symptom, daily functioning, comorbidity, and tolerability outcomes. This "Long-term Medication for ADHD (LMA) trial" was a prospective observational 2-year trial in children and adolescents aged 6-18 years (extension of 1-year trial). Participants met criteria for DSM-5 ADHD (inattentive or combined), with complex comorbidities; autism spectrum disorder (31%), autistic traits (24%), oppositional symptoms (59%), anxiety (32%), dyslexia/language disorder (16%), borderline intellectual functioning (17%). Medication was individually tailored and followed-up at clinical visits (1, 2, 3, 6, 12, 18, 24 months). Primary outcome: Clinical Global Impression-Severity and Improvement scales (CGI-S, CGI-I). Secondary outcomes: Investigator-rated ADHD-Rating Scale, Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale-Parent report (WFIRS-P; Family, School Learning and Behavior, Life Skills, Self-Concept, Social Activities, and Risky Activities domains), comorbidity symptoms and adverse events (AEs). One hundred twenty-eight participants were enrolled (1-year trial only n = 27, LMA trial n = 101). Of these 29 (23%) discontinued, mainly due to AEs (n = 7), moving (n = 7), or no longer needing medication (n = 6). Main AEs were poor appetite, low mood, anxiety, irritability, fatigue. Improvements from baseline to 2 years were large in CGI-S (effect size (ES) 2.28), ADHD-RS (ES 2.06), and moderate to large in WFIRS-P (ES total 0.73, learning 0.4, family 0.67). Overall, the trial showed robust and sustained improvements in ADHD symptom severity and daily functioning over a period of 2 years of ADHD medication in children and adolescents with ADHD and complex comorbidities. Most AEs were mild. Comorbidity symptoms were improved after 1 year, particularly oppositional symptoms, depression, and anxiety.

  • Adverse childhood experiences, epigenetics and telomere length variation in childhood and beyond: a systematic review of the literature
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1018-8827 .- 1435-165X. ; 29, s. 1329-1338
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines was conducted to answer the question: What epigenetic, telomeric and associated biological changes are associated with exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in the under 12s? Using PRISMA guidelines, appropriate databases were searched. 190 papers were returned with 38 articles fully reviewed. Articles were each independently quality rated by two authors using the Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool and data were extracted. Of the 38 articles, 23 were rated as very high quality. Most study participants were adults (n = 7769) with n = 727 child participants. Only seven of the very/high-quality studies were prospective and involved children. Methylation was the most studied method of epigenetic modification. There is some evidence supporting epigenetic modification of certain markers in participants exposed to ACEs measured in adulthood. Research is lacking on non-coding aspects of the epigenome and on coding aspects other than DNA methylation. There is some evidence of a more powerful effect on telomere length if physical neglect was involved. Much further work is required to model biological and psychological effects of epigenetic changes during childhood using prospective study designs. The effect of ACEs on the cellular ageing process during childhood is inadequately investigated and relies solely on measure of telomere length. Future research suggestions are proposed. © 2019, The Author(s).
