  • The influence of intergranular interaction on the magnetization of the ensemble of oriented Stoner-Wohlfarth nanoparticles

    • The influence of interparticle interaction on the processes of magnetization reversal is considered for an ensemble of oriented Stoner-Wohlfarth nanoparticles. This is done through a solution of a kinetic equation describing the relaxation of the total magnetization to its equilibrium value in an effective mean field which includes a term proportional to the instantaneous value of the magnetization. It is shown that the interparticle interaction influences the temperature dependence of a coercive field. Under certain conditions, the presence of the interparticle interaction can lead to the formation of the so-called superferromagnetic state with the correlated directions of the magnetic moments of the particles. If the system is unable to come to the equilibrium during the time interval necessary to perform measurements, some measured quantities become dependent on the measurement time. It is shown that the blocking temperature T-b and the temperature dependence of coercive field at T < T-b are strongly dependent on a measurement time. At T>T-b, however, the coercivity, if exists, does not depend on the measurement time. The data of magnetostatic measurements, carried out on the (CoFeB)(x)-(SiO2)(1-x) nanogranular films with the concentration of ferromagnetic particles slightly lower than a percolation threshold, are in compliance with the results of the calculations.

    • Influence of ultra-violet radiation of the KrF laser (wave length 248 nm, pulse duration 20 ns) on atomic structure of amorphous vanadium pentoxide thin films, prepared by the pulsed laser deposition method, is studied. Calculations of the short-range order characteristics (radii and diffusiveness of coordination spheres, coordination numbers) were performed by the Finbak -Warren method. It is established that minimal structure unit of amorphous V 2O5 film before and after irradiation is a strongly deformed oxygen octahedron. Distortions of tetragonal pyramids in the initial and modified film are different. Also, oxygen deficiency in a tetragonal pyramid is observed.

  • UV patterning of vanadium pentoxide films for device applications

    • In this work we present the results of selective chemical etching of amorphous vanadium pentoxide films after their modification by ultraviolet ( UV) radiation. V2O5 resist can be either positive or negative, depending on the developer composition. It was shown that UV- exposed V2O5 films after development and vacuum annealing can be transformed into VO2 structures which exhibit an electrically induced resistance switching effect. The proposed method demonstrates the feasibility of using V2O5 as an effective inorganic resist material for ambient condition UV photomicrolithography. Also, this material has a great potential for fabrication of vanadium oxide- based devices.

  • Effect of interaction in the magnetization reversal relaxation of superparamagnetic granulaR CoFeB -SiO2 FILMS

    • In order to study the magnetic interactions influence on the relaxation processes in superparamagnetic media, the magnetostatic measurements were carried out for the granular (CoFeB)x-(SiO2)1-x films with x values near percolation threshold. The observed temperature dependences of the coercivity for the samples magnetized along in-plane easy axis have shown two parts linear on √T with different inclination angles, which cross each other at the blocking temperature (Tb). The first part of the curve, which corresponds to the temperature range below T b, depends on the measuring time and is related to the thermal activation nature of magnetization reversal process in the blocked superparamagnetic state. Second part of the curve, which corresponds to the temperature range above Tb, is practically independent on the measuring time and is related to existence of correlated state of superparamagnetic grains moments, i.e. to superferromagnetic state. The method of the magnetization reversal curves simulation based on the numerical solving of kinetic equation has been applied to explain the experimental results.

  • 1.5 μm photoluminescence of Er3+ in opal based photonic crystals

    • The study of the emission properties of opal-erbium oxide nanocomposites in the wide range of erbium concentrations was carried out. Erbium oxide concentration was varied from 0.25 to 16%wt. Maximal output of the photoluminescence (PL) took place at 1%wt of erbium oxide concentration. It was shown that the annealing temperatures from 600 to 900°C were too low to exhibit sufficient emission properties of the erbium-opal composites. The presence of the erbium silicates Er2SiO5 and Er 2Si2O7 in the opal-erbium nanocomposites was revealed by X-ray phase analysis. Amorphous silica in opal matrix was not crystallized at the annealing during a few hours at 1000 - 1200°C. The case of the tens hours of annealing the crystoballite phase occurred. No angle dependence of the PL intensity was observed as a result of degradation of the photonic band gap (PBG) at the annealing of the opal-erbium oxide nanocomposites. Further modification of the material processing to achieve a strong photonic band gap reflection peak near 1550 nm with high PL intensity in the opal-Er2O3 composite is running.

  • Fuel removal from bumper limiter tiles by using a pulsed excimer laser

    • Samples of a limiter tile from the TEXTOR tokamak were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and nuclear reaction analysis both before and after laser heating. SEM images showed spheres and thin flakes covering the surface which are the areas modified by plasma particles striking under grazing angles. Due to roughness of the surface there are shadowed regions between the 'flakes'. Laser pulses did not lead to expected common ablation of the surface. Features that looked like 'melting' of thin surface layers were rather observed. The initial deuterium content in the surface layer of tiles was of the order of 10(18) D atoms per cm(2). After the laser light impact the content decreased with 60-70%; by reducing the deposited power by a factor four, the deuterium content was decreased by 40-50%. We make the interpretation that we approach a threshold of the laser detritiation method in fusion devices.

Prism coupling waveguide refractometry has been employed to characterize vertical capacitive electro-optical cells with 2 X 8 mm(2) semitransparent Au top electrodes. Fitting reflectivity spectra to Fresnel formulas yields extraordinary and ordinary refractive indices n(e) = 2.232 and n(o) = 2.234 as well as electro-optic coefficient r(13) = 17.4 pm/V. Dispersion of the refraction index follows the Sellmeier formula n(2) = 1 + 3.46/[1-(244 nm/lambda)(2)] in the range from 400 nm to 850 nm.

    • We report electro-optic performance of heteroepitaxial Na0.5K0.5NbO3(1.5 mu m)/La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (0.5 mu m) (NKN/LSCO) films grown on Al2O3(01 (1) under bar2) single crystal (r-cut sapphire) by rf-magnetron sputtering (NKN) and pulsed laser deposition (LSCO) techniques. Vertical capacitive electro-optical cells were defined by a thermal evaporation of 2 x 8 mm(2) Au electrodes through the contact mask on top the NKN film. Processing parameters have been specially optimized to obtain electrosoftNKN films with a non-linear fatigue-free P-E characteristics: low remnant P-r = 7.7 mu C/cm(2) high induced polarization P = 23 mu C/cm(2) @ 400 km/cm , and the coercive field E-c = 70 kV/cm. Electro-optical characterization of NKN films has been performed using waveguide refractometry: a prism coupling of a light beam into the thin-film waveguide modes. Intensity of TM- and TE-polarized light of 655 nm laser diode reflected from the free surface of NKN film and Au-clad NKN/LSCO waveguide was recorded at zero and 15 V (100 kV/cm) bias electric field. Fitting reflectivity spectra to Fresnel formulas yields extraordinary and ordinary refractive indices n(c) = 2.232 and n(o) = 2.234 as well as electro-optic coefficient r(13) = 17.4 pm/V. Dispersion of the refraction index follows Sellmeier formula n(2) = 1+ 3.46/[1 + (244 nm/lambda)(2)] in the range from 400 nm to 850 nm.

  • Anisotropy of electron structure at InAs(111) surfaces by laser pump-and-probe photoemission spectroscopy

    • The electronic structure and the electron dynamics of the clean InAs(111)A 2 x 2 and the InAs(111)B 1 x 1 surfaces have been studied by laser pump-and-probe photoemission spectroscopy. Normally unpopulated electron states above the valence band maximum (VBM) are filled on the InAs(111)A surface due to the conduction band pinning above the Fermi level (E-F). Accompanied by the downward band banding alignment, a charge accumulation layer is confined to the surface region creating a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The decay of the photoexcited carriers above the conduction band minimum (CBM) is originated by bulk states affected by the presence of the surface. No occupied states were found on the InAs(111)B 1 x 1 surface. This fact is suggested to be due to the surface stabilisation by the charge removal from the surface into the bulk. The weak photoemission intensity above the VBM on the (111)B surface is attributed to electron states trapped by surface defects. The fast decay of the photoexcited electron states on the (111)A and the (111)B surfaces was found to be tau(111A) less than or equal to 5 ps and tau(111B) less than or equal to 4ps, respectively. We suggest the diffusion of the hot electrons into the bulk is the decay mechanism. (

    • In this thesis the InSb(111), InAs(111) and GaSb(001) surfaces have been studied by means of time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy based upon the femtosecond laser system. The pump-and-probe technique allows to analyse both electron states in the valence band and normally unpopulated electron states above the valence band, which can be occupied by transiently excited carriers at the optically pumped surface. The life time of excited carriers is analysed by controlling over the time delay between pump and probe pulses. Experimental studies of the InSb(111) surface and comparison with a previously studied InSb(110) surface show electron excitations in the bulk region with a minor surface contribution. Time-resolved experiments of carrier dynamics at the polar InAs(111)A and InAs(111)B surfaces show about the same life time of excited carriers, while no populated states above the valence band maximum have been found at the InAs(111)A due to the charge removal. Surface intergap electron states have been found at the GaSb(001) surface located at ~250 meV above the valence band maximum. Angle-resolved experiments showed a strong confinement of this state at the centre of the surface Brillouin zone. A new two dimensional angle-resolved multi-anode analyser for the femtosecond laser photoemission setup has been constructed. The analyser can resolve a cone opening angle of ~1º at a drift distance of ~0.5 m with an energy resolution of ~125 meV. A continuous series of binary system SrTiO3–PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 has been grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on sapphire substrate with crystalline quality control by x-ray diffraction (XRD). The maximum tunability has been tailored to room temperature, where STO�PZT (71/29) composition shows superior performance. A PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 thin film pressure sensor has been fabricated by PLD and characterised by XRD and electrical measurements. The piezoelectric constant was found to be ~20 % higher compared to the bulk ceramics. A ferroelectric thin film electro-optical cell Na0.5K0.5NbO3/La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (NKN/LSCO) on sapphire has been fabricated by PLD. Refractive indices and electro-optical coefficient of the cell were characterised by prism coupling refractometry. The tunability of the PLD fabricated 2 μm slot NKN thin film interdigital capacitor has been found ~23 % at 40 V bias voltage and frequency 1 MHz.
