  • The effect of periodontal therapy on intra-oral halitosis : a case series
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Periodontology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0303-6979 .- 1600-051X. ; 43:5, s. 445-452
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of non-surgical periodontal therapy on intra-oral halitosis 3 months after therapy.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty-eight adults with intra-oral halitosis were included in a case series. Intra-oral halitosis was evaluated at baseline, and at 3 months after treatment using the organoleptic scores (OLS), Halimeter® , and a gas chromatograph.RESULTS: Significant reductions for OLS (p < 0.01), total sum of volatile sulphur compounds (T-VSC) (p < 0.01) and methyl mercaptan (MM) (p < 0.05) values were found after treatment. Hydrogen sulphide (H2 S) levels were not significantly reduced. The numbers of probing pockets 4 mm, 5 mm and 6 mm were significantly reduced as a result of therapy (p < 0.001). Bleeding on probing (BOP) and plaque indices were also significantly reduced (p < 0.001). For the 34 individuals with successful periodontal treatment (BOP<20% and a ≥50% reduction of total pocket depth) reductions in OLS (p < 0.01) and T-VSC scores (p < 0.01) were found. Eleven individuals were considered effectively treated for intra-oral halitosis presenting with a T-VSC value <160 ppb, a H2 S value <112 ppb and a MM value <26 ppb.CONCLUSION: Non-surgical periodontal therapy resulted in reduction of OLS, MM and T-VSC values 3 months after therapy. Few individuals were considered as effectively treated for intra-oral halitosis.

  • Mechanisms of inhibition of lipolysis by insulin, vanadate and peroxovanadate in rat adipocytes
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Biochemical Journal. - 0264-6021. ; 339, s. 281-289
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vanadate and peroxovanadate (pV), potent inhibitors of tyrosine phosphatases, mimic several of the metabolic actions of insulin. Here we compare the mechanisms for the anti-lipolytic action of insulin, vanadate and pV in rat adipocytes. Vanadate (5 mM) and pV (0.01 mM) inhibited lipolysis induced by 0.01-1 microM isoprenaline, vanadate being more and pV less efficient than insulin (1 nM). A loss of anti-lipolytic effect of pV was observed by increasing the concentration of isoprenaline and/or pV. pV induced tyrosine phosphorylation of the insulin receptor and insulin receptor substrate-1 to a greater extent than insulin, whereas vanadate affected these components little if at all. In addition, only a higher concentration (0.1 mM) of pV induced the tyrosine phosphorylation of p85, the 85 kDa regulatory subunit of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI-3K). Vanadate activated PI-3K-independent (in the presence of 10 nM isoprenaline) and PI-3K-dependent (in the presence of 100 nM isoprenaline) anti-lipolytic pathways, both of which were found to be independent of phosphodiesterase type 3B (PDE3B). pV (0.01 mM), like insulin, activated PI-3K- and PDE3B-dependent pathways. However, the anti-lipolytic pathway of 0.1 mM pV did not seem to require insulin receptor substrate-1-associated PI-3K and was found to be partly independent of PDE3B. Vanadate and pV (only at 0.01 mM), like insulin, decreased the isoprenaline-induced activation of cAMP-dependent protein kinase. Overall, these results underline the complexity and the diversity in the mechanisms that regulate lipolysis.

  • Mild Catalytic Reduction Of C—o Bonds And C═o Bonds Using A Recyclable Catalyst System
  • 2019
  • Patent (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • A method of reducing a C--O bond to the corresponding C--H bond in a substrate, which could be a benzylic alcohol, allylic alcohol, ester or an ether bond beta to a hydroxyl group or alpha to a carbonyl group using a recyclable metal catalyst system. The recyclable catalyst system is also applicable to reducing a C.dbd.O bond to the corresponding C--OH bond and then C--H bond. These methodologies can be linked in one-pot to selective oxidation and depolymerizations of aromatic polyols such as lignin.

  • Nutritional and occupational factors influencing the risk of Parkinson's disease : a case-control study in southeastern Sweden
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Movement Disorders. - 0885-3185. ; 14:1, s. 28-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE AND METHODS: To investigate the possible impact of nutritional and environmental risk factors for idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IP), a case-control study was performed in the county of Ostergötland in southeastern Sweden. The study involved 113 cases of IP and 263 control subjects. Dietary, drinking, and smoking habits, as well as previous occupation, were requested in a structured questionnaire. RESULTS: No increased risk was found for any of the nutritional items in which information was requested. A reduced risk was found for coffee, wine, and liquor at various consumption levels but also for fried or broiled meat, smoked ham or meat, eggs, French loaf or white bread, and tomatoes. All these food and drink items contain niacin. As in many studies, the frequency of preceding and present smoking was reduced in IP patients. Various occupational groups and exposures were analyzed and increased risks of IP in men were found for agricultural work along with pesticide exposure; this was also the case for male carpenters and female cleaners. CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicate that nutritional factors and occupational exposures, especially to pesticides, could be of etiologic importance in IP.

  • Genetic risk of type 2 diabetes modifies the effects of a lifestyle intervention aimed at the prevention of gestational and postpartum diabetes
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Diabetologia. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0012-186X .- 1432-0428. ; 65:8, s. 1291-1301
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims/hypothesis: The aim of this study was to assess the interaction between genetic risk and lifestyle intervention on the occurrence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and postpartum diabetes. Methods: The RADIEL study is an RCT aimed at prevention of GDM and postpartum diabetes through lifestyle intervention. Participants with a BMI ≥30 kg/m2 and/or prior GDM were allocated to intervention and control groups before pregnancy or in early pregnancy. The study visits took place every 3 months before pregnancy, once in each trimester, and at 6 weeks and 6 and 12 months postpartum. We calculated a polygenic risk score (PRS) based on 50 risk variants for type 2 diabetes. Results: Altogether, 516 participants provided genetic and GDM data. The PRS was associated with higher glycaemic levels (fasting glucose and/or HbA1c) and a lower insulin secretion index in the second and third trimesters and at 12 months postpartum, as well as with a higher occurrence of GDM and glycaemic abnormalities at 12 months postpartum (n = 356). There was an interaction between the PRS and lifestyle intervention (p=0.016 during pregnancy and p=0.024 postpartum) when analysing participants who did not have GDM at the first study visit during pregnancy (n = 386). When analysing women in tertiles according to the PRS, the intervention was effective in reducing the age-adjusted occurrence of GDM only among those with the highest genetic risk (OR 0.37; 95% CI 0.17, 0.82). The risk of glycaemic abnormalities at 12 months postpartum was reduced in the same group after adjusting additionally for BMI, parity, smoking and education (OR 0.35; 95% CI 0.13, 0.97). Conclusions/interpretation: Genetic predisposition to diabetes modifies the response to a lifestyle intervention aimed at prevention of GDM and postpartum diabetes. This suggests that lifestyle intervention may benefit from being tailored according to genetic risk. • Nonlinear piezoelectric effects - towards physics-based computational modelling of micro-cracking, fatigue, and switching
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : AIP. - 0094-243X. - 9780735405530 ; 1029:1, s. 209-220
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Piezoelectric ceramics -- as one widely commercialised group of smart materials -- exhibit a great potential for various engineering applications. Their high-frequency capabilities are in particular attractive for actuator and sensor devices, which nowadays are present in daily-life-technologies such as cellular phones, fuel injection systems, and so forth. At high loading levels however, severely nonlinear behaviour of these materials is observed which, from the control point of view, must be further investigated in order to be able to precisely account for such effects within the design of intelligent systems. The reasons for these nonlinearities are manifold and, even investigated within the last decades, not fully understood. Nevertheless, two important sources for these observations are so-called micro-cracking, together with fatigue phenomena, as well as switching or rather phase transformations. Accordingly, the main goal of this contribution is to study these effects by means of developing related constitutive models that can be embedded into iterative algorithmic schemes such as the finite element method. One the one hand, the grain-structure of a piezoceramic specimen will be modelled via the direct incorporation of the grain-boundaries as so-called interface elements. The underlying cohesive-like constitutive law of this layer includes both degrees of freedom of the surrounding bulk material -- or rather the jumps in these fields -- namely displacements and the electric potential. Based on the resulting traction-separation-type relations, micro-cracking is directly accounted for on this micro-level. Moreover, the constitutive law of the interfacial layer is supplemented by additional variables that enable the formulation of fatigue under cyclic loading conditions. On the other hand, phase transformations -- modelled in terms of an energy-based switching criterion -- are discussed and embedded into an iterative finite element context. Symmetry relations of the underlying unit cells are directly included so that the switching model accounts for the micro-mechanical properties of the piezoelectric materials of interest. At this stage, representative numerical simulations of polycrystalline specimens are based on straightforward averaging-techniques, while the combination of the developed micro-cracking model (grain boundaries) with the proposed switching model (bulk) constitutes future research.

  • Grand unified origin of gauge interactions and families replication in the standard model
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Universe. - : MDPI AG. - 2218-1997. ; 7:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The tremendous phenomenological success of the Standard Model (SM) suggests that its flavor structure and gauge interactions may not be arbitrary but should have a fundamental first-principle explanation. In this work, we explore how the basic distinctive properties of the SM dynamically emerge from a unified New Physics framework tying together both flavor physics and Grand Unified Theory (GUT) concepts. This framework is suggested by a novel anomaly-free supersymmetric chiral E6 × SU(2)F × U(1)F GUT containing the SM. Among the most appealing emergent properties of this theory is the Higgs-matter unification with a highly-constrained massless chiral sector featuring two universal Yukawa couplings close to the GUT scale. At the electroweak scale, the minimal SM-like effective field theory limit of this GUT represents a specific flavored three-Higgs doublet model consistent with the observed large hierarchies in the quark mass spectra and mixing already at tree level.
