- Resonances in the unbound nucleus 11N have been studied, using the resonance scattering reaction 10C+p. The data give evidence for three states above the 10C+p threshold with energies 1.30, 2.04, and 3.72 MeV. These states can be interpreted, in a potential-model analysis, as the ground state and the first two excited states with spin-parity 1 / 2+, 1 / 2-, and 5 / 2+ arising from the shell-model orbitals 1s1 / 2, 0p1 / 2, and 0d5 / 2. A narrow state superposed on a broad structure found at higher energy could be interpreted as the mirror state of the 3 / 2- in 11Be shifted down in energy. This shift would suggest a large radius of the potential.

- The fragment separator FRS at GSI was used as an energy-loss spectrometer to measure the longitudinal momentum distributions of C-16,C-18 fragments after one-neutron removal reactions in C-17,C-19 impinging on a carbon target at about 910 MeV/u. The distributions in the projectile frames are characterized by a FWHM of 141 +/- 6 MeV/c for C-16 and 69 +/- 3 MeV/c for C-18. The chemotactic cytokine interleukin-8--a cyst fluid marker for malignant epithelial ovarian cancer?

- Due to the difficulties in separating malignant and benign ovarian cysts by transvaginal ultrasound and other techniques, there is a need for biochemical markers in serum or cyst fluids. In the present study we have evaluated the levels of the chemokine interleukin-8 (IL-8) in ovarian cysts. IL-8 is known to be expressed in the normal ovary and to influence proliferation and angiogenesis of several nonovarian types of tumors. Cyst fluids from benign (n = 15) and malignant (n = 13) ovarian tumors were analyzed. The levels of IL-8 were found to be significantly (13-fold) higher in cyst fluids from malignant tumors (18.1 +/- 7.5 ng/ml; mean +/- SE) compared to benign cysts (1.3 +/- 0.7 ng/ml). The plasma levels of IL-8 were considerably lower (2.9 and 0.3% of levels in benign and malignant cyst fluids, respectively) than in cyst fluids. No difference in the plasma levels of patients with benign or malignant tumor could be detected. In contrast, the levels of CA 125 were significantly higher in plasma of patients with malignant disease with the inverse relation in cyst fluids. In conclusion, the levels of IL-8 are markedly elevated in cyst fluid from malignant tumors compared to benign. This specific increase indicates a role for this cytokine in ovarian tumor biology.

Low-fat mayonnaise : Influences of fat content, aroma compounds and thickeners

- The effects of fat content and thickeners, propylene glycol alginate (PGA; 1.40%) and guar gum (1.55%), on sensory and instrumental quality descriptors on reduced fat mayonnaises (15 and 30% fat) with and without added aroma compounds, citral (semi-polar) and pyroligneous acid (polar), were investigated. One mayonnaise, 82% fat, without added thickener or aroma compounds was used as reference. Sensory evaluation (quantitative descriptive analysis; QDA), rheological analysis (yield stress, maximum viscosity, G' and G''), measurements of particle size and headspace CC-MS analyses were carried out. Correlations between the results were developed Perceived and instrumental texture, and perceived smell and flavour, changed differently in magnitude and direction due to fat content and type of thickener.
