    • The fine-structure splittings of highly excited F-states in Cs were measured using high-resolution laser spectroscopy. The 12 and 132F states were found to be inverted with splittings ?E (122F)=-522(3) MHz and ?E (132F)=-416(3) MHz.

    • The fine-structure splitting of the 42D state in lithium was measured using stepwise laser excitation combined with level-crossing spectroscopy. The splitting was determined to be 456.2(0.8) MHz, a considerably higher value than the one obtained in a recent level-anticrossing measurement. The new value is in good agreement with the result of a Hartree-Fock calculation, 460.2 MHz.

    • Describes use of the quantum-beat method to study hyperfine structure in the 5 2 P 3/2 and 6 2 P 3/2 states of 23 Na. A pulsed dye laser, frequency-doubled into the UV region, was used to excite sodium atoms abruptly in a beam. The fluorescent light was recorded with a fast transient digitiser, interfaced to a micro-computer. Theoretical calculations using many-body perturbation theory were performed for the entire P sequence measured so far, taking polarisation and correlation effects into account separately. Very good agreement between experimental and theoretical values was obtained.

    • By pulse modulating or deflecting a CW dye laser beam, cascade-free lifetime determinations at high spectral resolution can be performed with the decayed-coincidence technique using measuring times of about 1 minute. The method is illustrated by lifetime measurements for the 72P3/21/2 levels of cesium.

    • By pulse-modulating a cw dye-laser beam and employing the delayed-coincidence technique, we have determined the natural radiative lifetimes of a number of atomic states in rare-earth atoms Eu, Dy, and Yb. In the measurements, which were performed on an atomic beam, exponential decay curves with good statistics were obtained using short measuring times. The general features of the technique are discussed. When possible, oscillator strengths are deduced and compared with literature values.

    • Natural radiative lifetimes and LandégJ factors for several highly excitedF states in cesium were measured using time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. TheF states were excited from the 52D5/2 state with a pulse-modulated CW dye laser, and the delayed-coincidence method was employed to record decay curves, which in some experiments exhibited Zeeman quantum beats. A further CW dye laser was used to produce the necessary population in the 52D5/2 state. The lifetimes in the sequence 11–162F7/2 follow anx scaling law withx=2.76 and the Landé factors agree with the predicted value, 1.143.

  • Hyperfine structure in the sequence of sodium S states

    • The hyperfine structure for the 6, 7 and 8 2 S 1/2 states of 23 Na was measured by optical double-resonance techniques. The states were populated by step-wise excitation using two CW dye lasers. For the dipole interaction constant a, a(6 2 S 1/2 ) = 37.5(2) MHz, a(7 2 S 1/2 )=20.9(1) MHz, a(8 2 S 1/2 )=12.85(10) MHz. were obtained. Theoretical calculations of the hyperfine structure were performed for the 3-8 2 S 1/2 states using many-body perturbation techniques. When polarization as well as certain correlation effects are included in the calculation, an agreement with the experimental values within 2% is obtained.

  • Two quantum-beat phenomena observed for magnetically tuned atomic sublevels

    • Quantum-beat signals can also be observed when the length of the exciting pulse is not short compared to the Bohr precession period if spontaneous decays during the pulse are important. Experimental demonstration for Zeeman quantum beats in the 6s6p 3P1-6s21S0 ytterbium transition, as well as a simple description of the phenomenon is given. In the same way as quantum beats can be obtained for coherently excited Zeeman sublevels close to the zero-field level crossing, beats can be induced close to a high-field level crossing. We have observed such high-field quantum beats for the 7 2P state of 133Cs.
