  • Children's perspectives through the camera lens : reflections on meaning-making processes and participatory research
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nordicom Review. - : Nordicom. - 1403-1108 .- 2001-5119. ; 33:1, s. 3-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In relation to any claims about “child-centred” research, the present article stresses the need to reflect on what is actually at stake in terms of participation and the meaning-making processes that evolve in a certain research setting. Our experiences with photo-taking methods are based on two separate studies involving children (age 5-8 years) and young adolescents (age 12-16 year). Taking a constructivist approach, the article draws special attention to issues related to the age of the children, the type of camera used, the researcher’s status in the fieldwork and the type of data acquired through these children’s photos. The article stresses the need to perceive the story behind the photo as an outcome of how the child chose to position him/herself within a certain research context, which in turn affects how the child sees, thinks and acts, but also what he/she sees.

  • Pilot spark energy in the cone calorimeter : A source of measurement uncertainties
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Fire and Materials. - : Wiley. - 0308-0501 .- 1099-1018. ; 38:7, s. 760-764
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work presents measurements meant to study the influence of the spark energy on the time to ignition of a given material in the cone calorimeter. For this purpose, square slabs of particle board were tested under two radiation intensities until ignition occurred using two spark energies for each intensity level. Results show that increasing the spark energy leads to a reduction inthe ignition time regardless of the radiation intensity. However, the influence of the spark energy on the time to ignition is, in absolute numbers, larger for the low radiation intensity case than for the high radiation intensity case. Nonetheless, the proportional difference is nearly 10% for both levels of heat radiation. Results from this work confirm that there is an influence of the spark energyon the time to ignition of a given material suggesting that a narrower and more specific definition of the ignition circuits allowed in the cone calorimeter would be highly beneficial for ensuring repeatable results among laboratories.

  • Cloudy with a Chance of Load Spikes: Admission Control with Fuzzy Risk Assessments
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 6th IEEE International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing. - 9780769551524 ; , s. 155-162
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Elasticity is key for the cloud paradigm, wherethe pay-per use nature provides great flexibility for end-users.However, elasticity complicates long-term capacity planning forcloud providers as the exact amount of resources requiredover time becomes uncertain. Admission control techniques arethus needed to handle the trade-off between resource utilizationand potential overload. We define a set of admission controlalgorithms that combine risk assessment methods with a fuzzyaggregation framework. An experimental evaluation using amixture of bursty and steady applications demonstrate that ouralgorithms can increase resource utilization by a factor of twowhile limiting overload problems to a few percent.

  • Weakened Magnetic Braking in the Exoplanet Host Star 51 Peg
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 2041-8205 .- 2041-8213. ; 960:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The consistently low activity level of the old solar analog 51 Peg not only facilitated the discovery of the first hot Jupiter, but also led to the suggestion that the star could be experiencing a magnetic grand minimum. However, the 50 yr time series showing minimal chromospheric variability could also be associated with the onset of weakened magnetic braking (WMB), where sufficiently slow rotation disrupts cycling activity and the production of large-scale magnetic fields by the stellar dynamo, thereby shrinking the Alfven radius and inhibiting the efficient loss of angular momentum to magnetized stellar winds. In this Letter, we evaluate the magnetic evolutionary state of 51 Peg by estimating its wind braking torque. We use new spectropolarimetric measurements from the Large Binocular Telescope to reconstruct the large-scale magnetic morphology, we reanalyze archival X-ray measurements to estimate the mass-loss rate, and we detect solar-like oscillations in photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, yielding precise stellar properties from asteroseismology. Our estimate of the wind braking torque for 51 Peg clearly places it in the WMB regime, driven by changes in the mass-loss rate and the magnetic field strength and morphology that substantially exceed theoretical expectations. Although our revised stellar properties have minimal consequences for the characterization of the exoplanet, they have interesting implications for the current space weather environment of the system.

  • From Cell Shape to Body Shape: Epithelial Morphogenesis in Drosophila melanogaster
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Embryonic development is associated with extensive rearrangements of tissues. The driving force for these rearrangements is generated by a dynamic reorganization of the Actin cytoskeleton of individual cells. In many instances, conserved Rho-family GTPases that are activated by Rho guanine nucleotide exchange factors (RhoGEFs) play an important role in this process. The present thesis investigates the mechanisms that control activation and specificity of the GTPase Rho1 by DRhoGEF2 during morphogenesis of the Drosophila embryonic epidermis. DRhoGEF2 is the Drosophila ortholog of the human RhoGEFs, LARG (Leukemia-associated RhoGEF), PDZ-RhoGEF and p115 RhoGEFs. In addition to a catalytic module, DRhoGEF2 encompasses an N-terminal PSD-95/Dlg/ZO-1 (PDZ) domain, a Regulator of G-protein Signaling (RGS) domain and a cysteine-rich diacylglycerol (DAG)-binding domain in the central region. Previously, DRhoGEF2 has been shown to play an important role in the constriction of Actin filaments during pole cell formation, blastoderm cellularization, and invagination of the germ layers. In this thesis, we describe a role for DRhoGEF2 in the morphogenesis of segmental grooves, which are segmentally repeated tissue infoldings that form in the epidermis during mid-embryogenesis. Groove formation is associated with up-regulation of the groove cell-markers odd-skipped, crumbs and enabled, and we demonstrate that Hh-signaling promotes their accumulation. In addition, we describe the cell shape changes that lead to the formation of segmental grooves, and take a genetic approach to characterize the role of DRhoGEF2 and the Rho1-effector Diaphanous (Dia) in this process. Both DRhoGEF2 and dia are required for groove formation. However, detailed analysis of their function suggests that DRhoGEF2 and Dia regulate different aspects of cytoskeletal reorganization. We find that Dia polymerizes Actin filaments whereas DRhoGEF2 regulates F-Actin contraction but not polymerization. In order to functionally dissect the roles of the different domains of DRhoGEF2, we have created several truncated forms of DRhoGEF2. Expression studies suggest that the PDZ, RGS and DAG domains are not essential for protein activity or constitutive membrane targeting, although the PDZ-domain may have a specific role in mediating DRhoGEF2 localization in the early embryo. Taken together our data suggest that both DRhoGEF2 and Dia are required for groove morphogenesis but that they are connected to the Actin cytoskeleton through distinct Rho1 effector pathways. We hypothesize that DRhoGEF2 provides specificity to Rho1-effector pathway activation during epithelial morphogenesis.

  • Favela Funk – Ways of Being Young in the Urban Peripheries of Rio de Janeiro
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • During the last decades, funk music produced in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro has been travelling the world as a genre of contemporary cool. Construed as both hip and authentic and consumed globally, it has become a political and commercial asset in the nation’s rise to economic dominance and in Rio’s campaign to become a global city. In Brazil, however, favela funk draws the boundaries between the shanty towns of the urban margins, where it remains a social practice, and the state, by which it is condemned and sometimes prohibited for lyrics that allude to violence in an alleged glorification of gang power. This dissertation is an ethnographic inquiry into social life and power relations in one of the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. It tells the story of how a drug-dealing faction challenges the sovereignty of the state on its turf by means of both arms and the control and distribution of pleasure and fun. Funk, in this account, emerges as an immensely popular social practice and thus an instrument of drug-dealing power. By treating violence and the sexually explicit as both unifying and fragmenting in the social dynamics of this place, the dissertation uncovers the paths that favela youth tread in the context of severe poverty, vulnerability and limited access to state institutions and formal employment.
