  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper aims to shed light on the Aristotelian notion of dissent and its understanding in the medieval reception of Aristotle’s dialectics. Dissent is fundamental in Aristotle’s Topics, although its exact nature is not clear. Specifically, it is unclear whether dissent is essentially related to an epistemic quality of the premises involved, or whether it simply amounts to social disagreement about them, regardless of their epistemic quality. Medieval scholars clearly opt for the former reading. We aim to show that this owes to their understanding of logic as a tool for science.

  • Le syllogisme sophistique selon Simon de Faversham et Raoul le Breton: entre formalisme et pragmatique
  • 2023
  • In: Archives d'histoire doctrinale et littéraire du Moyen-âge. - 0373-5478. ; 90, s. 113-134
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to show that at the end of the 13th century there’s a change of approach to the sophistical syllogism, going from a definition based on its formal features to a definition based on its pragmatic features. The first position is put forward by Simon of Faversham, during the 1280s, probably during his stay in Paris. The second position is put forward by Radulphus Brito, the last of the great Parisian Masters of Arts of the 13th century. In their positions we will find, then, a crucial disagreement regarding the nature of the sophistical syllogism.

  • Thirteenth-Century Aristotelian Logic: The Study of Scientific Method
  • 2021
  • In: Oxford Studies in Medieval Philosophy, Volume 9 / dited by Robert Pasnau. - Oxford : Oxford University Press. - 9780192844637 ; , s. 147-186
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The aims of this paper are to show (i) that thirteenth-century Aristotelian logic (AL-13) is a logical tradition that considers Aristotelian logic (AL: the logical curriculum at the University of Paris, that is, Porphyry’s Isagoge, Aristotle’s Organon, Boethius’s De divisione and De topicis differentiis, and the anonymous Sex principia) as a system that is organized around the syllogistic argument; and (ii) that AL-13 can be characterized as the study of scientific method, of which formal analyses are a part but by no means the crucial one. I give a diachronic account of AL-13, with its continuities and ruptures, by looking at the general accounts of AL by Nicholas of Paris (1230s), Albert the Great (1250s), and Radulphus Brito (1290s).
