Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
- Two complementary experimental programs have taken place to investigate the origin and evolution of shape coexistence in the light mercury region. Recoil Distance Doppler-shift measurements were performed at the University of Jyväskylä utilizing the Köln plunger device in conjunction with the JUROGAM + RITU + GREAT setup. In addition, Coulomb excitation measurements of 184,186,188Hg were performed at REX-ISOLDE using the MINIBALL Ge-detector array. The results of the lifetime measurements of the yrast states up to Iπ = 10+ in 182Hg are reported. Preliminary analysis of the Coulomb excitation data is also discussed.

alpha decay of the new isotopes Rn-193,Rn-194
- 2006

Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 74:6, s. 064303-

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- The new neutron-deficient isotopes Rn-193,Rn-194 have been identified in the complete fusion reaction Cr-52+Sm-144 -> Rn-196(*) at the velocity filter SHIP. The alpha-decay energy and half-life value of Rn-194 were determined to be E-alpha=7700(10) keV and T-1/2=0.78(16) ms, respectively. For Rn-193 the half-life of T-1/2=1.15(27) ms and two alpha lines at E-alpha 1=7685(15) keV, I-alpha 1=74(20)% and E-alpha 2=7875(20) keV, I-alpha 2=26(12)% were found. The decay pattern of Rn-193, which is substantially different from that of the heavier odd-A Rn isotopes, provides first experimental evidence for the long-predicted deformation in the very neutron-deficient Rn nuclei.

Isomer spectroscopy in No-254
- 2006

Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; T125, s. 73-77

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- Isomeric states in No-254 were investigated using a calorimetric method. Two different isomers were found with half-lives of T-1/2 = 266 +/- 2 ms and T-1/2 = 184 +/- 3 mu s, respectively. The dominant decay path of the 184 mu s isomer proceeds via states feeding the longer-lived 266 ms isomer. The 266 ms isomer in turn decays via a two-quasi-particle K = 3 band to the ground-state band. The full decay path was observed with the GREAT spectrometer located at the focal plane of the gas-filled separator RITU at the Accelerator Laboratory in Jyvskyl. This work sheds light on the two-quasi-particle structure in this transfermium nucleus.

High Angular Momentum States Populated in Fragmentation Reactions
- 2006
-
Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 632:2-3, s. 203-206

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- The population of metastable states produced in relativistic-energy fragmentation of a U-238 beam has been measured. For states with angular momentum greater than or similar to 20h, a much higher population than expected has been observed. By introducing a collective component to the generation of angular momentum the experimental data can be understood. This is the first time that a collective degree of freedom has be shown to play a major role in such high-energy collisions. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Neutron-deficient N≈126 Nuclei Produced in 238U Fragmentation : Population of High-spin States

Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
- The population of metastable states produced in relativistic-energy fragmentation of a 238U beam has been measured. For states with high angular momentum, I=17 and I=21.5, a higher population than expected has been observed, with the discrepancy increasing with angular momentum. By considering two sources for the angular momentum, related to single-particle and collective motions, a much improved description of the experimental results can be obtained. In addition, new results on the structure of 208Fr, 211Ra and 216Ac are reported.

A γ-ray burst at a redshift of z~8.2
- 2009

Ingår i: Nature. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 461, s. 1254-1257

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- Long-duration γ-ray bursts (GRBs) are thought to result from the explosions of certain massive stars, and some are bright enough that they should be observable out to redshifts of z>20 using current technology. Hitherto, the highest redshift measured for any object was z = 6.96, for a Lyman-α emitting galaxy. Here we report that GRB090423 lies at a redshift of z~8.2, implying that massive stars were being produced and dying as GRBs ~630Myr after the Big Bang. The burst also pinpoints the location of its host galaxy.

Efficacy, acceptability and tolerability of the combined contraceptive ring, NuvaRing, compared with an oral contraceptive containing 30 mug of ethinyl estradiol and 3 mg of drospirenone
- 2006

Ingår i: Contraception. - : Elsevier BV. - 0010-7824. ; 74:6, s. 451-457

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- PURPOSE: This randomized multicenter, open-label, trial compared efficacy, acceptability, tolerability and compliance of NuvaRing with a combined oral contraceptive (COC), containing 30 mug of ethinyl estradiol (EE) and 3 mg of drospirenone. METHOD: In this 13-cycle study, 983 women were randomized and treated (intent-to-treat population) with NuvaRing or COC. RESULTS: One in-treatment pregnancy occurred with NuvaRing (Pearl Index=0.25) (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.006, 1.363) and four with the COC (Pearl Index=0.99) (95% CI: 0.269, 2.530). For both groups, compliance (89.2% NuvaRing, 85.5% COC) and satisfaction (84% NuvaRing; 87% COC) were high; the vast majority of women found NuvaRing easy to insert (96%) and remove (97%). Tolerability was similar; the most frequent adverse events with NuvaRing were related to ring use, whereas estrogen-related events were more common with the COC. CONCLUSION: NuvaRing has comparable efficacy and tolerability to a COC containing 30 mug of EE and 3 mg drospirenone. User acceptability of both methods was high.
