  • Development of an analysis to probe the neutrino mass ordering with atmospheric neutrinos using three years of IceCube DeepCore data IceCube Collaboration
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : SPRINGER. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 80:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Neutrino Mass Ordering (NMO) remains one of the outstanding questions in the field of neutrino physics. One strategy to measure the NMO is to observe matter effects in the oscillation pattern of atmospheric neutrinos above similar to 1GeV, as proposed for several next-generation neutrino experiments. Moreover, the existing IceCube DeepCore detector can already explore this type of measurement. We present the development and application of two independent analyses to search for the signature of the NMO with three years of DeepCore data. These analyses include a full treatment of systematic uncertainties and a statistically-rigorous method to determine the significance for the NMO from a fit to the data. Both analyses show that the dataset is fully compatible with both mass orderings. For the more sensitive analysis, we observe a preference for normal ordering with a p-value of pIO=15.3% and CLs=53.3% for the inverted ordering hypothesis, while the experimental results from both analyses are consistent within their uncertainties. Since the result is independent of the value of delta CP and obtained from energies E nu greater than or similar to 5GeV, it is complementary to recent results from long-baseline experiments. These analyses set the groundwork for the future of this measurement with more capable detectors, such as the IceCube Upgrade and the proposed PINGU detector.

  • Neutrinos below 100 TeV from the southern sky employing refined veto techniques to IceCube data
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Astroparticle physics. - : ELSEVIER. - 0927-6505 .- 1873-2852. ; 116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many Galactic sources of gamma rays, such as supernova remnants, are expected to produce neutrinos with a typical energy cutoff well below 100 TeV. For the IceCube Neutrino Observatory located at the South Pole, the southern sky, containing the inner part of the Galactic plane and the Galactic Center, is a particularly challenging region at these energies, because of the large background of atmospheric muons. In this paper, we present recent advancements in data selection strategies for track-like muon neutrino events with energies below 100 TeV from the southern sky. The strategies utilize the outer detector regions as veto and features of the signal pattern to reduce the background of atmospheric muons to a level which, for the first time, allows IceCube searching for point-like sources of neutrinos in the southern sky at energies between 100 GeV and several TeV in the muon neutrino charged current channel. No significant clustering of neutrinos above background expectation was observed in four years of data recorded with the completed IceCube detector. Upper limits on the neutrino flux for a number of spectral hypotheses are reported for a list of astrophysical objects in the southern hemisphere.

  • Advances in Magnetics Roadmap on Spin-Wave Computing
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Magnetics. - 0018-9464. ; 58:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magnonics addresses the physical properties of spin waves and utilizes them for data processing. Scalability down to atomic dimensions, operation in the GHz-to-THz frequency range, utilization of nonlinear and nonreciprocal phenomena, and compatibility with CMOS are just a few of many advantages offered by magnons. Although magnonics is still primarily positioned in the academic domain, the scientific and technological challenges of the field are being extensively investigated, and many proof-of-concept prototypes have already been realized in laboratories. This roadmap is a product of the collective work of many authors that covers versatile spin-wave computing approaches, conceptual building blocks, and underlying physical phenomena. In particular, the roadmap discusses the computation operations with Boolean digital data, unconventional approaches like neuromorphic computing, and the progress towards magnon-based quantum computing. The article is organized as a collection of sub-sections grouped into seven large thematic sections. Each sub-section is prepared by one or a group of authors and concludes with a brief description of current challenges and the outlook of further development for each research direction. Author

  • Worldwide First Successful and Reproducable Long-Term Survival up to Half a Year : Completed Preclinical Study with Life-Supporting Orthotopic Pig-to-Baboon Cardiac Xenotransplantation (oXHTx) Fullfilling the ISHLT Prerequisite for Clinical Cardiac Xenotransplantation
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: The Journal of heart and lung transplantation : the official publication of the International Society for Heart Transplantation. - : Elsevier BV. - 1557-3117. ; 39:4, s. 12-12
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: Major hurdles in oXHTx are the delayed xenograft rejection, the early perioperative cardiac xenograft dysfunction (PCXD) and the pig heart overgrowth, which were solved in this study with a costimulation blockade, a new non-ischemic cold preservation and a growth inhibition by anti-proliferative drugs. Aim was to achieve a 90-days-survival of minimal 60% (6 of 10 baboons) in this life-supporting orthotopic pig-to-baboon model (oXHTx), because this is the recommendation of the ISHLT to begin a clinical cardiac XT program. METHODS: We transplanted 8 GalKO/hCD46/hTM transgenic (tg) pig hearts orthotopically into baboons with using a basic immunosuppression consisting of ATG, rituximab, mycophenolate (MMF), cortisone and a costimulation blockade CD40mAb (high dose: 50 mg/kg). To prevent PCXD, we used instead of the crystalloid solution a new non-ischemic 8°C cold perfusion technique with oxygenated erythrocytes. Additional antihypertensive drugs and an mTOR inhibitor (temsirolimus) were applied to inhibit pig xenograft growth and hypertrophy. RESULTS: In comparison to our previous group with crystalloid cardioplegia (Längin et al. Nature. 2018;564:430-433) in this group with cold perfusion preservation (non-ischemic) no PCXD was found. One baboon died of a pancreatitis on day 14, another of sepsis on day 26. By using the antiproliferative therapy, 6 of 8 recipient baboons reached the end of study, were long-term surviving (4 were actively terminated after 90 days according to the guidelines of our government). With special permit two further experiments could be prolonged to half a year and the animals were terminated on day 182 and 195. All baboons lived under excellent physical conditions and no hyperacute rejection or DXR occurred. CONCLUSION: First time in a life-supporting oXHT of multi-tg pig hearts here was a consistent reproduceable long-term survival of 3 - 6 months achieved, which is a major progress after 25 years of research. This is an essential milestone and breakthrough and meets the prerequisite according to the ISHLT to begin a clinical phase I study with patients in terminal heart failure. This paves the way to clinical cardiac XT in the next 2 to 5 years.

  • Choroid Plexus Volume in Multiple Sclerosis vs Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder A Retrospective, Cross-sectional Analysis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Neurology-Neuroimmunology & Neuroinflammation. - : Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health). - 2332-7812. ; 9:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and Objectives The choroid plexus has been shown to play a crucial role in CNS inflammation. Previous studies found larger choroid plexus in multiple sclerosis (MS) compared with healthy controls. However, it is not clear whether the choroid plexus is similarly involved in MS and in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the choroid plexus volume in MS and NMOSD. Methods In this retrospective, cross-sectional study, patients were included by convenience sampling from 4 international MS centers. The choroid plexus of the lateral ventricles was segmented fully automatically on T1-weighted MRI sequences using a deep learning algorithm (Multi-Dimensional Gated Recurrent Units). Uni- and multivariable linear models were applied to investigate associations between the choroid plexus volume, clinically meaningful disease characteristics, and MRI parameters. Results We studied 180 patients with MS and 98 patients with NMOSD. In total, 94 healthy individuals and 47 patients with migraine served as controls. The choroid plexus volume was larger in MS (median 1,690 mu L, interquartile range [IQR] 648 mu L) than in NMOSD (median 1,403 mu L, IQR 510 mu L), healthy individuals (median 1,533 mu L, IQR 570 mu L), and patients with migraine (median 1,404 mu L, IQR 524 mu L; all p < 0.001), whereas there was no difference between NMOSD, migraine, and healthy controls. This was also true when adjusted for age, sex, and the intracranial volume. In contrast to NMOSD, the choroid plexus volume in MS was associated with the number of T2-weighted lesions in a linear model adjusted for age, sex, total intracranial volume, disease duration, relapses in the year before MRI, disease course, Expanded Disability Status Scale score, disease-modifying treatment, and treatment duration (beta 4.4; 95% CI 0.78-8.1; p = 0.018). Discussion This study supports an involvement of the choroid plexus in MS in contrast to NMOSD and provides clues to better understand the respective pathogenesis.

  • Evaluation of modelled versus observed non-methane volatile organic compounds at European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme sites in Europe
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics. - 1680-7316 .- 1680-7324. ; 24:13, s. 7699-7729
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Atmospheric volatile organic compounds (VOCs) constitute a wide range of species, acting as precursors to ozone and aerosol formation. Atmospheric chemistry and transport models (CTMs) are crucial to understanding the emissions, distribution, and impacts of VOCs. Given the uncertainties in VOC emissions, lack of evaluation studies, and recent changes in emissions, this work adapts the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme Meteorological Synthesizing Centre-West (EMEP MSC-W) CTM to evaluate emission inventories in Europe. Here we undertake the first intensive model-measurement comparison of VOCs in 2 decades. The modelled surface concentrations are evaluated both spatially and temporally, using measurements from the regular EMEP monitoring network in 2018 and 2019, as well as a 2022 campaign. To achieve this, we utilised the UK National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory to derive explicit emission profiles for individual species and employed a tracer method to produce pure concentrations that are directly comparable to observations. The degree to which the modelled and measured VOCs agree varies depending on the specific species. The model successfully captures the overall spatial and temporal variations of major alkanes (e.g. ethane, n-butane) and unsaturated species (e.g. ethene, benzene) but less so for propane, i-butane, and ethyne. This discrepancy underscores potential issues in the boundary conditions for the latter species and in their primary emissions from, in particular, the solvent and road transport sectors. Specifically, potential missing propane emissions and issues with its boundary conditions are highlighted by large model underestimations and smaller propane-To-ethane ratios compared to the measurement. Meanwhile, both the model and measurements show strong linear correlations among butane isomers and among pentane isomers, indicating common sources for these pairs of isomers. However, modelled ratios of i-butane to n-butane and i-pentane to n-pentane are approximately one-Third of the measured ratios, which is largely driven by significant emissions of n-butane and n-pentane from the solvent sector. This suggests issues with the speciation profile of the solvent sector, underrepresented contributions from transport and fuel evaporation sectors in current inventories, or both. Furthermore, the modelled ethene-To-ethyne and benzene-To-ethyne ratios differ significantly from measured ratios. The different model performance strongly points to shortcomings in the spatial and temporal patterns and magnitudes of ethyne emissions, especially during winter. For OVOCs, the modelled and measured concentrations of methanal and methylglyoxal show a good agreement, despite a moderate underestimation by the model in summer. This discrepancy could be attributed to an underestimation of contributions from biogenic sources or possibly a model overestimation of their photolytic loss in summer. However, the insufficiency of suitable measurements limits the evaluation of other OVOCs. Finally, model simulations employing the CAMS inventory show slightly better agreements with measurements than those using the Centre on Emission Inventories and Projections (CEIP) inventory. This enhancement is likely due to the CAMS inventory's detailed segmentation of the road transport sector, including its associated sub-sector-specific emission profiles. Given this improvement, alongside the previously mentioned concerns about the model's biased estimations of various VOC ratios, future efforts should focus on a more detailed breakdown of dominant emission sectors (e.g. solvents) and the refinement of their speciation profiles to improve model accuracy.
