  • Exposed Datapath for Efficient Computing

    • We introduce FlexCore, which is the first exemplar of a processor based on the FlexSoC processor paradigm. TheFlexCore utilizes an exposed datapath for increased performance. Microbenchmarks yield a performance boost of a factor of two over a traditional five-stage pipeline with the same functional units as the FlexCore.We describe our approach to compiling for the FlexCore.A flexible interconnect allows the FlexCore datapath to bedynamically reconfigured as a consequence of code generation. Additionally, specialized functional units may be introduced and utilized within the same architecture and compilation framework. The exposed datapath requires a wide control word. The conducted evaluation of two micro benchmarks confirms that this increases the instruction bandwidth and memory footprint. This calls for an efficient instruction decoding as proposed in the FlexSoC paradigm.

    • A positive relationship between daily physical activity and aerobic fitness exists in adults. Studies in children have given conflicting results, possibly because of differences in methods used to assess daily physical activity and fitness. No study regarding daily physical activity and fitness in children has been published, where fitness has been assessed by direct measurement of maximum oxygen uptake and related to daily physical activity intensities by accelerometers. We examined 248 children (140 boys and 108 girls), aged 7.9-11.1 years. Maximum workload and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2PEAK) by indirect calorimetry were measured during a maximum bicycle ergometer exercise test. Exercise capacity was adjusted for body mass and (body mass)(2/3). Daily physical activity was evaluated by accelerometers, worn around the waist for 4 days. Mean accelerometer counts and time spent in vigorous physical activity were calculated. VO2PEAK was correlated with mean accelerometer counts (r=0.23 for boys and r=0.23 for girls, both P < 0.05), but somewhat better with time spent in vigorous activity (r=0.32 for boys, r=0.30 for girls, both P < 0.05). All results remained virtually the same regardless of the method used to adjust for differences in body size.

    • We have reviewed 184 patients after repair of primary hypospadias. They were operated on and followed-up according to a standard protocol, and the senior author (HS) participated in all operations. The patients were reconstructed using a Byars two-stage procedure ( n = 102) or a Scuderi ( n = 29) or Mathieu ( n = 41) single-stage procedure. The rest ( n = 12) just had a removal of the chordee with realignment of the skin. Complications recorded were haematomas, postoperative infections, malfunction of catheter, urinary retention, fistulas, and strictures. Thirty-eight complications developed in 26 patients and the overall incidence of fistula was 22 in 18 patients (10%). Our findings suggest that the most decisive risk factor for complications is the severity of the primary malformation, because a severe malformation per se is difficult to treat as it requires a long reconstruction; in addition the curvature, shortage of tissue, and extensive surgery generally require a staged reconstruction in these cases. Other factors seem to be of much lesser importance.

    • An overview of our recent results on characterization and modification of high-resistivity n-type bulk zinc oxide samples, grown by hydrothermal techniques, is given. Three specific topics are addressed; (i) the role of lithium (Li) as an electrically compensating impurity, (ii) extrinsic n-type doping by hydrogen implantation, and (iii) influence of annealing conditions on deep band emission. In (i), furnace annealing of as-grown samples at temperatures above ∼800 °C is shown to cause out-diffusion of residual Li impurities and concurrently, the resistivity decreases. After annealing at 1400 °C, a resistivity close to 10−1 Ωcm is obtained and the Li content is reduced from above 1017 cm−3 to the mid 1015 cm−3 range, providing evidence for the crucial role of Li as an electrically compensating impurity. For ion-implanted samples, vacancy clusters evolve during post-implant flash lamp annealing (20 ms duration) and these clusters appear to trap and deactivate Li with a resulting improvement of the n-type conductivity. However, these clusters have a limited stability and start to dissociate already after 1h at 900 °C, accompanied by a decrease in the conductivity. For topic (ii), n-type doping by hydrogen implantation is shown to enhance the conductivity by about 5 orders of magnitude already in the as-implanted state. Despite substantial loss of hydrogen, the conductivity remains stable, or even increases, after annealing up to ≥600 °C, and necessary conditions for doping by hydrogen are discussed. In (iii), the origin of the commonly observed deep band emission from monocrystalline zinc oxide is investigated using a concept of annealing as-grown samples in different atmospheres. A strong influence by the atmosphere and temperature is observed and the results can be interpreted in terms of dominant effects on the emission by vacancy-related defects.

    • A new approach to improve fault detection is proposed. The method takes benefit of using a population of systems to dynamically define a norm of how the system works. The norm is derived from self-organizing algorithms which generate a low dimensional representation of how selected feature data are correlated. The feature data is selected from the state variables and from the control signals. The self-organizing method and limited number of feature signals enable fast deviation detection and low computational footprint on each system to be analyzed. The comparison analysis between the systems is performed at a service centre, to where the low-dimensional representations of the systems are transmitted. The method is demonstrated on a simulated DC-motor and the results are promising for deviation detection.

    • We introduce FlexCore, the first exemplar of an architecture based on the FlexSoC framework. Comprising the same datapath units found in a conventional five-stage pipeline, the FlexCore has an exposed datapath control and a flexible interconnect to allow the datapath to be dynamically reconfigured as a consequence of code generation. Additionally, the FlexCore allows specialized datapath units to be inserted and utilized within the same architecture and compilation framework.This study shows that, in comparison to a conventional five-stage general-purpose processor, the FlexCore is up to 40\% more efficient in terms of cycle count on a set of benchmarks from the embedded application domain. We show that both the fine-grained control and the flexible interconnect contribute to the speedup. Furthermore, our synthesized, placed and routed FlexCore offers savings both in energy and execution time.The exposed FlexCore datapath requires a wide control word. The conducted evaluation confirms that this increases the instruction bandwidth and memory footprint. This calls for efficient instruction decoding as proposed in the FlexSoC framework.
