  • Dynamics in refurbishment : a study of production processes and human interactions in a commercial environment
  • 2001
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The client-contractor relationship has long been a concern in the Swedish construction industry and in constraction management research. This concern has, to great extent, been directed at the need to improve productivity. The result of the industry´s approach to increasing productivity in the 1960s is reflected in functional diversity and the industrial paradigm of a linear and sequential model of planning, design, construction and handing over of a completed building. The approach accentuates the need for effective communication and interaction between the parties, especially those engaged in refurbishment projects. This thesis concludes that the client and contractor do, in fact, share an understanding of the ideal production model for refurbishment. However, this shared production philosophy reveals different production drivers and these can have correspondingly different implications for project success. Another conclusion is that new forms of administrative procedures, with respect to environmental considerations and CAD, can facilitate better communication between actors. Empirical studies of interpersonal emotion support the view that function diversity, motivation diversity, and social character affect performance in refurbishment projects.

  • On the taut string interpretation of the one-dimensional rudin–osher–fatemi model
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: ICPRAM 2018 - Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods. - : SCITEPRESS - Science and Technology Publications. - 9789897582769 ; , s. 233-244
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new proof of the equivalence of the Taut String Algorithm and the one-dimensional Rudin–Osher–Fatemi model is presented. Based on duality and the projection theorem in Hilbert space, the proof is strictly elementary. Existence and uniqueness of solutions (in the continuous case) to both denoising models follow as by-products. The standard convergence properties of the denoised signal, as the regularizing parameter tends to zero, are recalled and efficient proofs provided. Moreover, a new and fundamental estimate on the denoised signal is derived. It implies, among other things, the strong convergence (in the space of functions of bounded variation) of the denoised signal to the in-signal as the regularization parameter vanishes.

  • Large-scale lava dome fracturing as a result of concealed weakened zones
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Geology. - : Geological Society of America. - 0091-7613 .- 1943-2682. ; 50:12, s. 1346-1350
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mechanically weakened alteration zones in lava domes are thought to jeopardize their stability. Such zones can be hazardous when concealed within the dome, either because they formed by subsurface hydrothermal circulation or because they formed on the surface but were subsequently buried by renewed lava extrusion. We present a new suite of computa-tional models showing how the size and position of a weakened brittle zone within a dome can affect large-scale fracture formation, displacement, and the collapse mechanism. By combining recent laboratory data for the mechanical behavior of dome rocks with discrete element method models, we show (1) the presence of a weak zone increases instability, which is exacerbated when the size of the zone increases or the zone is positioned off-center; (2) the position of the weak zone changes the deformation mechanism from slumping-type slope de-formation when the zone is positioned centrally, compared with deep-seated rotational slope failure when the zone is positioned toward the dome flank; and finally, (3) dome-cutting tensile fractures form in the presence of a small weak zone (60 m diameter, -14% of dome width), whereas large weak zones (120 m diameter, -27% of dome width) promote the formation of longer and deeper fractures that jeopardize larger dome volumes. Our results corroborate previous field observations at lava domes and indicate that large fracture formation, which greatly influences dome stability and outgassing, can be explained by the presence of con-cealed alteration zones. This improved understanding of the mechanisms responsible for dome instability enables better hazard assessment at volcanoes worldwide.

  • The extracellular matrix - the under-recognized element in lung disease?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pathology. - : Wiley. - 0022-3417 .- 1096-9896. ; 240:4, s. 397-409
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The lung is composed of airways and lung parenchyma, and the extracellular matrix (ECM) contains the main building blocks of both components. The ECM provides physical support and stability to the lung, and as such it has in the past been regarded as an inert structure. More recent research has provided novel insights revealing that the ECM is also a bioactive environment that orchestrates the cellular responses in its environs. Changes in the ECM in the airway or parenchymal tissues are now recognized in the pathological profiles of many respiratory diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Only recently have we begun to investigate whether these ECM changes result from the disease process, or whether they constitute a driving factor that orchestrates the pathological outcomes. This review summarizes our current knowledge of the alterations in the ECM in asthma, COPD, and IPF, and the contributions of these alterations to the pathologies. Emerging data suggest that alterations in the composition, folding or rigidity of ECM proteins may alter the functional responses of cells within their environs, and in so doing change the pathological outcomes. These characteristics highlight potential avenues for targeting lung pathologies in the future. This may ultimately contribute to a better understanding of chronic lung diseases, and novel approaches for finding therapeutic solutions. © 2016 The Authors.
