  • Family and friends provide most social support for the bereaved
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: PALLIATIVE MEDICINE. - : SAGE Publications. - 0269-2163 .- 1477-030X. ; 23:2, s. 141-149
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social support is important in the bereavement period. In this study, the respondents were family members and friends to a patient who had died at a palliative care unit. The aim was to explore wishes and needs for, access to and effects of social support in the bereaved. We found that the grieving person’s wishes for social support from their network and the network also provided most social support. The network consisted of the close family, the origin family, relatives and friend. Support from the professional staff was required when the network was dysfunctional or when the grieving person did not want to burden members of his/her own network. The need for social support from professional staff was most needed close to the death and some time after.

  • Managing Grief and Relationship Roles Influence Which Forms of Social Support the Bereaved Needs
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. - : SAGE Publications. - 1049-9091 .- 1938-2715. ; 26:4, s. 241-245
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social support is important during the bereavement period and influences which form of social support the grieving person needs. This study shows 2 different strategies for coping with grief which also revealed which form of social support the grieving persons needed depend on what they found difficult to manage. The coping strategies are called grief management and involve different strategies and the roles in the relationship with the diseased. Systematically monitoring the bereaved makes it possible to understand the strategies they use in the grieving process and to identify when these strategies are insufficient so professional support can be offered.

  • En hypotesgenererande studie av nattfastans längd, undernäring och hälsorelaterad livskvalitet hos äldre
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Vård i Norden. - 0107-4083. ; 29:1, s. 45-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Malnutrition is a major problem among elderly at nursing homes. Overnight-fasting is defined as the time between the last mealtime at night and breakfast and was considered as long in this study when it exceeded eleven hours. The aim of the study was to map the overnight-fasting length, the frequency and rate of malnutrition and the health related quality of life in an elderly population living at a nursing home in western Sweden. The study was a quantitative descriptive study and was performed at a somatic department of a nursing home. The data was analysed using descriptive statistic. The result indicate a possible relation between the combination of manifest malnutrition as measured in this study, an overnight- fasting length exceeding 11 hours and low health related quality of life in old age. The study generated the hypothesis that health related quality of life among elderly persons living at nursing homes can increase if the over-night fasting length decrease under eleven hours. In addition there is a need for more knowledge concerning the elderly’ own experience of long over-night fasting.

  • A psychometric evaluation of a Swedish version of the Quality of Life in Late-Stage Dementia (QUALID) scale.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International psychogeriatrics / IPA. - 1041-6102 .- 1741-203X. ; 19:6, s. 1040-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the validity, reliability and responsiveness of a Swedish translation of the Quality of Life in Late-Stage Dementia (QUALID) Scale. METHOD: A total of 169 elderly residents at 19 dementia special care units in eight long-term care facilities in the Gothenburg city region participated in the study. Assessments were made by 107 proxy informants. RESULTS: Results showed satisfactory levels of internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's alpha coefficients 0.74), acceptable inter-rater reliability between informants (0.69), and high test-retest reliability (0.86). As hypothesized, QUALID scores were also associated with those from other quality-of-life (QoL) indices (criterion validity), as well as with use of psychoactive drugs, and with tests of cognitive impairment (clinical validity). The responsiveness of the questionnaire was also acceptable. CONCLUSIONS: As important clinical decisions may derive from perceived QoL effects, it is vital that the QoL data be reliable, valid and sensitive to change. Our evaluations of the psychometric properties of the Swedish QUALID indicate that it satisfactorily meets the need for an instrument to assess QoL in late-stage dementia in Sweden, in a wide range of settings and applications.

  • Natural activity – An intervention study of the interplay between cage-birds and elderly patients in a Swedish hospital setting
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International journal of older people nursing. - : Wiley. - 1748-3735 .- 1748-3743. ; 3:1, s. 22-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim. The aim of this study was to describe the interaction between cage-birds and older people as it arises in spontaneous situations in a Swedish hospital ward setting. Background. Older people are at risk of being affected by mental fatigue because of various age-related reductions and disease. Mental fatigue manifests itself through a reduced ability to concentrate. The method of alleviating mental fatigue with the use of stimulating natural settings or animal-assisted activities is so far unexplored in Sweden and subsequently it is important to study the method in a Swedish context to implement it as a recognized nursing intervention in the care of older people. Design. The study had an explorative observational design, and was conducted at a geriatric ward with a consecutive selection of participants. Method. The observations were analysed using a constant comparative method influenced by Grounded Theory. 'Attention restorative theory' was used as the theoretical framework to guide the study. Result. Our findings indicate that animal-assisted therapy has a positive effect on involuntary attention and mental restoration, as well as on enhanced social behaviour among older people. Relevance to clinical practice. The result strengthens the assumption that animal companionship should be considered a beneficial nursing intervention for older people to prevent mental fatigue.
