  • Impaired thymic export and apoptosis contribute to regulatory T-cell defects in patients with chronic heart failure.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: PLoS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203 .- 1932-6203. ; 6:9, s. e24272-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Animal studies suggest that regulatory T (T(reg)) cells play a beneficial role in ventricular remodeling and our previous data have demonstrated defects of T(reg) cells in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). However, the mechanisms behind T(reg-)cell defects remained unknown. We here sought to elucidate the mechanism of T(reg-)cell defects in CHF patients.

  • Developed and developing world responsibilities for historical climate change and CO2 mitigation
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 109:32, s. 12911-12915
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference in Cancun, in November 2010, the Heads of State reached an agreement on the aim of limiting the global temperature rise to 2 degrees C relative to preindustrial levels. They recognized that long-term future warming is primarily constrained by cumulative anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, that deep cuts in global emissions are required, and that action based on equity must be taken to meet this objective. However, negotiations on emission reduction among countries are increasingly fraught with difficulty, partly because of arguments about the responsibility for the ongoing temperature rise. Simulations with two earth-system models (NCAR/CESM and BNU-ESM) demonstrate that developed countries had contributed about 60-80%, developing countries about 20-40%, to the global temperature rise, upper ocean warming, and sea-ice reduction by 2005. Enacting pledges made at Cancun with continuation to 2100 leads to a reduction in global temperature rise relative to business as usual with a 1/3-2/3 (CESM 33-67%, BNU-ESM 35-65%) contribution from developed and developing countries, respectively. To prevent a temperature rise by 2 degrees C or more in 2100, it is necessary to fill the gap with more ambitious mitigation efforts.

  • Stereocontrolled 1-S-glycosylation and comparative binding studies of photoprobe-thiosaccharide conjugates with their O-linked analogs
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Pure and Applied Chemistry. - 0033-4545 .- 1365-3075. ; 85:9, s. 1789-1801
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of thioglycosides and other glycan derivatives with anomeric sulfur linkages is gaining increasing interest, both in synthesis and in various biological contexts. Herein, we demonstrate the occurrence and circumvention of anomerization during 1-S-glycosylation reactions, and present highly efficient and stereocontrolled syntheses of a series of photoprobe-thiosaccharide conjugates. Mutarotation of glycosyl thiols proved to be the origin of the anomeric mixtures formed, and kinetic effects could be used to circumvent anomerization. The synthesized carbohydrate conjugates were then evaluated by both solution- and solid-phase-based techniques. Both binding results showed that the S-linked glycosides interact with their cognate lectins comparably to the corresponding O-analogs in the present cases, thus demonstrating the reliability of the solid-support platform built upon our photo-initiated carbohydrate immobilization method for probing protein bindings, and showing the potential of combining these two means for studying carbohydrate-protein inter-actions.

  • Artificial photosynthesis : A two-electrode photoelectrochemical cell for light driven water oxidation with molecular components
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Electrochimica Acta. - : Elsevier BV. - 0013-4686 .- 1873-3859. ; 149, s. 337-340
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An efficient two-electrode molecular PEC was assembled, in which a photoanode was constructed using a co-adsorbed method with a molecular photosensitizer (PS) 1 and a molecular catalyst 2 on TiO2-sintered FTO electrode (TiO2(1 + 2)). Without applied bias against a reference electrode, the system achieves remarkable photocurrent densities and carries out light driven water oxidation as evidenced by Clark electrode measurements in solution. A photocurrent density of 70 mA/cm(2) has been obtained within 10 s illumination time, and a TON of about 220 was obtained with a maximum turnover frequency (TOF) of ca. 4 min(-1) within the initial 5 minutes illumination duration.

  • Visible Light-Driven Water Splitting in Photoelectrochemical Cells with Supramolecular Catalysts on Photoanodes
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ACS Catalysis. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2155-5435. ; 4:7, s. 2347-2350
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By using a supramolecular self-assembly method, a functional water splitting device based on a photoactive anode TiO2(1+2) has been successfully assembled with a molecular photosensitizer 1 and a molecular catalyst 2 connected by coordination of 1 and 2 with Zr4+ ions on the surface of nanostructured TiO2. On the basis of this photoanode in a three-electrode photoelectrochemical cell, a maximal incident photon to current conversion efficiency of 4.1% at similar to 450 nm and a photocurrent density of similar to 0.48 mA cm(-2) were successfully obtained.

  • Density functional theory study on the adsorption and decomposition of the formic acid catalyzed by highly active mushroom-like Au@Pd@Pt tri-metallic nanoparticles
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics - PCCP. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1463-9076 .- 1463-9084. ; 15:13, s. 4625-4633
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Local structures and adsorption energies of a formic acid molecule and its decomposed intermediates (H, O, OH, CO, HCOO, and COOH) on highly electrocatalytically active mushroom-like Au-core@Pd-shell@Pt-cluster nanoparticles with two atomic layers of the Pd shell and stoichiometric Pt coverage of around half-monolayer (Au@2 ML Pd@0.5 ML Pt) have been investigated by first principles calculations. The adsorption sites at the center (far away from the Pt cluster) and the edge (close to the Pt cluster) are considered and compared. Significant repulsive interaction between the edge sites and CO is observed. The calculated potential energy surfaces demonstrate that, with respect to the center sites, the CO2 pathway is considerably promoted in the edge area. Our results reveal that the unique edge structure of the Pt cluster is responsible for the experimentally observed high electrocatalytic activity of the Au@Pd@Pt nanoparticles toward formic acid oxidation. Such microscopic understanding should be useful for the design of new electrochemical catalysts.

  • Artificial photosynthesis : photosensitizer/catalyst supramolecular assemblies for light driven water oxidation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Faraday discussions. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1359-6640 .- 1364-5498. ; 176, s. 225-232
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three new supramolecular assemblies SA1-SA3 with different linkages between the photosensitizer and catalyst have been synthesized for light driven water oxidation. With flexible -CH2-CH2- chains as the linkage, the assembly SA3 displays the best performance for photocatalytic water oxidation compared with the other two assemblies, a turnover number of 34 has been obtained based on the molecular assembly SA3 in a homogeneous system. This type of assembly connected with flexible linkages represents suitable candidates to construct photoanodes for light driven water splitting in dye sensitized photoelectrochemical devices.

  • Artificial photosynthesis - functional devices for light driven water splitting with photoactive anodes based on molecular catalysts
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics - PCCP. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1463-9076 .- 1463-9084. ; 16:24, s. 12008-12013
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photoactive anodes consisting of Ru(bpy)(3) type photosensitizer 1 and molecular catalysts 2 and 3 on nanostructured TiO2 have been assembled in functional devices for successful light driven water splitting. From their performance measurements we found that the photoanode TiO2(1 + 3) in which the molecular ruthenium catalyst and the phosphonate anchoring group are linked by a flexible -CH(2)CH(2)CH(2)chain showed a significantly higher photocurrent density than the photoanode TiO2(1 + 2) with only -CH2- linkage. The possible reasons for the different water splitting performance of otherwise identical devices are discussed.

  • Visible Light Driven Water Splitting in a Molecular Device with Unprecedentedly High Photocurrent Density
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 135:11, s. 4219-4222
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A molecular water oxidation catalyst (2) has been synthesized and immobilized together with a molecular photosensitizer (1) on nanostructured TiO2 particles on FTO conducting glass, forming a photoactive anode (TiO2(1+2)). By using the TiO2(1+2) as working electrode in a three-electrode photoelectrochemical cell (PEC), visible light driven water splitting has been successfully demonstrated in a phosphate buffer solution (pH 6.8), with oxygen and hydrogen bubbles evolved respectively from the working electrode and counter electrode. By applying 0.2 V external bias vs NHE, a high photocurrent density of more than 1.7 rnA.cm(-2) has been achieved. This value is higher than any PEC devices with molecular components reported in literature.

  • Human interactive secure key and ID exchange protocols in body sensor networks
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IET Information Security. - 1751-8709 .- 1751-8717. ; 7:1, s. 30-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A body sensor network (BSN) is typically a wearable wireless sensor network. Security protection is critical to BSNs, since they collect sensitive personal information. Generally speaking, security protection of BSN relies on identity (ID) and key distribution protocols. Most existing protocols are designed to run in general wireless sensor networks, and are not suitable for BSNs. After carefully examining the characteristics of BSNs, the authors propose human interactive empirical channel-based security protocols, which include an elliptic curve Diffie–Hellman version of symmetric hash commitment before knowledge protocol and an elliptic curve Diffie–Hellman version of hash commitment before knowledge protocol. Using these protocols, dynamically distributing keys and IDs become possible. As opposite to present solutions, these protocols do not need any pre-deployment of keys or secrets. Therefore compromised and expired keys or IDs can be easily changed. These protocols exploit human users as temporary trusted third parties. The authors, thus, show that the human interactive channels can help them to design secure BSNs.
