  • Immobilization of peroxidase glycoprotein on gold electrodes modified with mixed epoxy-boronic acid monolayers
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-5126 .- 0002-7863. ; 124:43, s. 12845-12853
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of bioelectronic enzyme applications requires the immobilization of active proteins onto solid or colloidal substrates such as gold. Coverage of the gold surface with alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMS) reduces nonspecific adsorption of proteins and also allows the incorporation onto the surface of ligands with affinity for complementary binding sites on native proteins. We present in this work a strategy for the covalent immobilization of glycosylated proteins previously adsorbed through weak, reversible interactions, on tailored SAMS. Boronic acids, which form cyclic esters with saccharides, are incorporated into SAMS to weakly adsorb the glycoprotein onto the electrode surface through their carbohydrate moiety. To prevent protein release from the electrode surface, we combine the affinity motif of boronates with the reactivity of epoxy groups to covalently link the protein to heterofunctional boronateepoxy SAMS. The principle underlying our strategy is the increased immobilization rate achieved by the weak interaction-induced proximity effect between slow reacting oxyrane groups in the SAM and nucleophilic residues from adsorbed proteins, which allows the formation of very stable covalent bonds. This approach is exemplified by the use of phenylboronates-oxyrane mixed monolayers as a reactive support and redox-enzyme horseradish peroxidase as glycoprotein for the preparation of peroxidase electrodes. Quartz crystal microbalance, atomic force microscopy, and electrochemical measurements are used to characterize these enzymatic electrodes. These epoxy-boronate functional monolayers; are versatile, stable interfaces, ready to incorporate glycoproteins by incubation under mild conditions.

  • Properties of orthotropic glass-polypropylene composites manufactured by weaving of prepreg tapes and other routes
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Plastics, Rubber and Composites Processing and Applications. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0959-8111. ; 29:10, s. 520-526
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports a study of the melt impregnation and weaving of glass-polypropylene prepreg tapes into sheet for use as a precursor for pressed thermoplastic composite products and a comparison of the properties attainable with those achievable by other comparable routes. Melt impregnation has been used successfully to manufacture well impregnated tapes, with and without internal coupling agent. It appears that weaving could be an economically viable process for converting unidirectional tape into a conformable, press formable prepreg. The properties of glass-polypropylene laminates manufactured by pressing the tape woven product were compared with those of other glass-polypropylene composites, including crossply laminate made from Plytron and samples prepared by film stacking. Quasi-static mechanical properties were found to be comparable with those of Plytron and superior to those of the other materials. In the coupled samples, coupling was somewhat less effective than in Plytron. The impact behaviour of the pressed, tape woven products was impressive and superior to any of the other materials tested. © 2000 IoM Communications Ltd.

  • Observation of an excited C2-4 ion
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-4075 .- 1361-6455. ; 37:11, s. 2241-2246
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports an experimental investigation of the electron impact detachment of C−4. We observe structure in the electron impact cross section for detaching a single electron from a C−4 cluster anion, which we attribute to the formation and decay of the C2−4 dianion. The system is energetically unstable and very rapidly decays via double autodetachment. The energy and width of the resonance were determined to be 8.8(5) eV and 1.4(5) eV, respectively, and the resonance lies 1.5(5) eV above the ground state of the neutral system. The experiment was conducted by merging monoenergetic electron and ion beams in the heavy ion storage ring CRYRING. The detachment channel was monitored by detecting neutral C4 fragments.

  • Single and double detachment from H-
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A. Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics. - 1050-2947 .- 1094-1622 .- 2469-9926 .- 2469-9934. ; 69:4, s. 042707-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Absolute cross sections for single and double detachment from H- following electron impact have been measured over a range of collision energies from the thresholds to 170 eV. The measurements were made using a magnetic storage ring. The ions in the ring were merged with a monoenergetic electron beam and neutral and positively charged fragments were detected. We cover larger energy ranges than in many of the previous experiments, and this is the first time both single and double detachment have been measured simultaneously. This allows us to present accurate ratios between the single and double detachment cross sections. On the basis of these ratio measurements we discuss possible mechanisms leading to double detachment.

  • Ontogenetic changes in depth distribution of juvenile flatfishes in relation to predation risk and temperature on a shallow-water nursery ground
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Marine Ecology-Progress Series. - 0171-8630. ; 229, s. 233-244
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stratified depth sampling was used to investigate the distributional changes of newly settled plaice Pleuronectes platessa and dabs Limanda limanda, and resident populations of shrimp Crangon crangon on a sandy beach. During the settlement period, the smallest newly settled plaice are found in deeper water than the larger fish that settled earlier. After settlement, plaice concentrate in water <1 m deep and there is a positive relationship between length and depth. Later in the year the fish gradually migrate into deeper water as they grow. Dabs settle later and in deeper water than plaice. Shrimp are concentrated in deeper water early in the year but migrate onshore in the summer, The movements of plaice are considered to be related to the predation risk caused by the shrimp and other predators in deeper water and to the higher temperatures in shallow water that promote faster growth. Once a size refuge from predators has been reached, the plaice move into deeper water. Intertidal pools probably serve as refuges for the smallest sizes of plaice because predators are less numerous in pools than in the sea. The use of shallow water by plaice represents the occupation of a niche which not only reduces predation and maximises growth, but may also greatly reduce competition for food in the earliest stages when densities are highest and competition with dabs is likely to be greatest.
