  • Development of a detector (ALFA) to measure the absolute LHC luminosity at ATLAS
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Astroparticle, Particle and Space Physics, Detectors and Medical Physics Applications - Proceedings of the 10th Conference. - 9812819088 - 9789812819086 ; , s. 984-988
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ATLAS collaboration plans to determine the absolute luminosity of the CERN LHC at Interaction Point 1 by measuring the trajectory of protons elastically scattered at very small angles (μrad). A scintillating fibre tracker system called ALFA (Absolute Luminosity For ATLAS) is proposed for this measurement. Detector modules will be placed above and below the LHC beam axis in roman pot units at a distance of 240 m on cach side of the ATLAS interaction point. They allow the detectors to approach the beam axis to millimeter distance. Overlap detectors also based on the scintillating fibre technology, will measure the precise relative position of the two detector modules, Results obtained during beam tests at DESY and at CERN validate the detectors design and demonstrate the achievable resolution. We also report about radiation hardness studies of the scintillating fibres to estimate the lifetime of the ALFA system at different operating conditions of the LHC.

  • Spectral phase encoded time spread optical code division multiple access technology for next generation communication networks Invited
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Optical Networking. - 1536-5379. ; 6:10, s. 1210-1227
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We overview and summarize the progress of the spectral phase encoded time spreading (SPECTS) optical code division multiple access (O-CDMA) technology. Recent progress included a demonstration of a 320 Gbit/s (32-user x 10 Gbit/s) all-optical passive optical network testbed based on the SPECTS O-CDMA technology and a theoretical prediction of the spectral efficiency at 100% and above. In particular, InP-based integrated photonics allows implementation of SPECTS O-CDMA transmitters and receivers monolithically integrated on a chip. The integrated InP chip technology not only allows robust and compact configurations for practical and low-cost O-CDMA network deployments but also offers code reconfigurations at rapid rates for secure communication applications.

  • The data acquisition system of the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 538:1-3, s. 692-702
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The n_TOF facility at CERN has been designed for the measurement of neutron capture, fission and (n, xn) cross-sections with high accuracy. This requires a flexible and-due to the high instantaneous neutron flux-almost dead time free data acquisition system. A scalable and versatile data solution has been designed based on 8-bit flash-ADCs with sampling rates up to 2 GHz and 8 Mbyte memory buffer. The software is written in C and C++ and is running on PCs equipped with RedHat Linux.

  • Hadron beam test of a scintillating fibre tracker system for elastic scattering and luminosity measurement in ATLAS
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A scintillating fibre tracker is proposed to measure elastic proton scattering at very small angles in the ATLAS experiment at CERN. The tracker will be located in so-called Roman Pot units at a distance of 240 m on each side of the ATLAS interaction point. An initial validation of the design choices was achieved in a beam test at DESY in a relatively low energy electron beam and using slow off-the-shelf electronics. Here we report on the results from a second beam test experiment carried out at CERN, where new detector prototypes were tested in a high energy hadron beam, using the first version of the custom designed front-end electronics. With a spatial resolution of 25 mu m an adequate tracking performance was obtained, under conditions which are similar to the situation at the LHC. In addition, the alignment method using so-called overlap detectors was studied and shown to have the expected precision.

  • Ranking and selecting clustering algorithms using a meta-learning approach
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a novel framework that applies a meta-learning approach to clustering algorithms. Given a dataset, our meta-learning approach provides a ranking for the candidate algorithms that could be used with that dataset. This ranking could, among other things, support non-expert users in the algorithm selection task. In order to evaluate the framework proposed, we implement a prototype that employs regression support vector machines as the meta-learner. Our case study is developed in the context of cancer gene expression microarray datasets. © 2008 IEEE.

  • 10-GHz and 20-GHz channel spacing high-resolution AWGs on InP
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: IEEE Photonics Technology Letters. - 1041-1135 .- 1941-0174. ; 21:5, s. 298-300
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This letter reports on 10-GHz and 20-GHz channel-spacing arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) based on InP technology. The dimensions of the AWGs are 6.8 × 8.2 mm2 and 5.0 × 6.0 mm2, respectively, and the devices show crosstalk levels of 12 dB for the 10-GHz and 17 dB for the 20-GHz AWG without any compensation for the phase errors in the arrayed waveguides. The root-mean-square phase errors for the center arrayed waveguides were characterized by using an optical vector network analyzer, and are 18° for the 10-GHz AWG and 28° for the 10-GHz AWG.

  • Comparative study on normalization procedures for cluster analysis of gene expression datasets
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Normalization before clustering is often needed for proximity indices, such as Euclidian distance, which are sensitive to differences in the magnitude or scales of the attributes. The goal is to equalize the size or magnitude and the variability of these features. This can also be seen as a way to adjust the relative weighting of the attributes. In this context, we present a first large scale data driven comparative study of three normalization procedures applied to cancer gene expression data. The results are presented in terms of the recovering of the true cluster structure as found by five different clustering algorithms. ©2008 IEEE.

  • Treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder with eye movement desensitization and reprocessing: Outcome is stable in 35-month follow-up
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Psychiatry Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-1781 .- 1872-7123. ; 159:1-2, s. 101-108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that may follow major psychological trauma. The disorder is longstanding, even chronic, and there is a need for effective treatment. The most effective short-term treatments are cognitive behavioural therapy and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). Twenty subjects with chronic PTSD following occupational health hazards from "person under train" accidents or assault at work were treated with five sessions of EMDR. They were assessed with psychometric scales and diagnostic interviews before treatment, directly after treatment, at 8 months, and at 35 months after the end of Therapy. The primary outcome variable was full diagnosis of PTSD according to the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria. Results from interview-based and self-evaluation psychometric scales were used as secondary outcome variables. Immediately following treatment, the patients were divided up into two groups, initial remitters (12 of 20) and non-remitters (8 of 20). There were no drop-outs during therapy, but three patients withdrew during follow-up. The initial result was maintained at the 35-month follow-up. The secondary outcome variables also showed a significant immediate change towards normality that was stable during the long-term follow-up. After 3

  • Genome sequence of Aedes aegypti, a major arbovirus vector.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Science (New York, N.Y.). - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 1095-9203 .- 0036-8075. ; 316:5832, s. 1718-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a draft sequence of the genome of Aedes aegypti, the primary vector for yellow fever and dengue fever, which at approximately 1376 million base pairs is about 5 times the size of the genome of the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae. Nearly 50% of the Ae. aegypti genome consists of transposable elements. These contribute to a factor of approximately 4 to 6 increase in average gene length and in sizes of intergenic regions relative to An. gambiae and Drosophila melanogaster. Nonetheless, chromosomal synteny is generally maintained among all three insects, although conservation of orthologous gene order is higher (by a factor of approximately 2) between the mosquito species than between either of them and the fruit fly. An increase in genes encoding odorant binding, cytochrome P450, and cuticle domains relative to An. gambiae suggests that members of these protein families underpin some of the biological differences between the two mosquito species.

  • Odor Memory Performance and Memory Awareness : A Comparison to Word Memory Across Orienting Tasks and Retention Intervals
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Chemosensory Perception. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1936-5802 .- 1936-5810. ; 2:3, s. 161-171
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Odor memory has been argued to exhibit unique characteristics in relation to memory for other types of stimuli such as visually presented words. Two experiments investigated episodic recognition performance as well as memory awareness for odors and words across manipulations of orienting task and retention interval. Orienting task mattered little to odor recognition. However, in contradiction with several previous studies, substantial forgetting of odors was found. After controlling for effects of odor identifiability, it was found that memory for identified odors exhibited greater similarities to memory for words than to memory for unidentified odors.

  • Regional cerebral blood flow during auditory recall in 47 subjects exposed to assaultive and non-assaultive trauma and developing or not posttraumatic stress disorder
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Archives of Psychiatry and Clinical Neuroscience. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0940-1334 .- 1433-8491. ; 255:5, s. 359-365
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: Psychological trauma leads to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in susceptible subjects. The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) between two groups of subjects exposed to different types of traumatic stressor either developing or not developing PTSD. METHODS: Twenty subjects developing (S) and 27 not developing (NS) PTSD after being exposed to either earlier person-under-the-train accident (NA) or being assaulted in the underground environment (A) were included in the study. 99mTc-HMPAO SPECT was performed and the uptake in 29 regions of the brain (VOIs), bilaterally, was assessed. rCBF distribution was compared, using analysis of variance (ANOVA), between groups (S/NS) and type (A/NA) during a situation involving an auditory evoked re-experiencing of the traumatic event. Discriminant analysis was applied to test the concordance between clinical diagnosis and SPECT findings. RESULTS: In the general analyses significant differences were found between groups and types and there was a significant hemisphere x type interaction. S showed higher CBF than NS and so did A as compared to NA, particularly in the right hemisphere. Discriminant analysis correctly classified 66% of cases (p < 0001) in testing S/NS and 72% (p < 0001) in testing NA/A. CONCLUSIONS: Under recall of their traumatic experience we found higher relative CBF distribution values in S as compared to NS. CBF was higher in the right hemisphere and particularly in assaulted subjects. These findings underscore the role upon trauma recall of both the right hemisphere and the nature of the stressing event.

  • Damage Assessment After Accidental Events : Report of Committee V.1
  • 2009. - 1
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 17th International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress. - Seoul, Korea : Seoul National University. ; , s. 1-72
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper contains the report of the Committee, which is a new one that was created todeal with the methods to assess damage and residual strength after accidental events. The name of the committee, being a short one may give a wrong impression about itsscope as it mentions damage assessment while the mandate refers that there should beconcern for the extent of damage and local and global residual strength of shipstructures, after accidental events. Therefore the contents of the report deal also withmethods to determine local and global residual strength, including the specification ofthe appropriate loads. It starts by providing a description of the type of damages that can be found in thevarious accidental events. Representative scenarios are described and the typicaldamages that results from the specific accidents are indicated. Next section describeshow in real situations the damaged state is perceived. Thus, inspection methods aredescribed as well as the available approaches to derive information about the status ofthe structure from indirect measurements.Loads on the structure are treated afterwards, including the loads that are generatedduring the accidental situation itself and also after the accident when the ship is indamaged state, often listed and with non symmetric sections. The loads are used todetermine ship strength using the assessment methods described in section 5, whichdeals with various types of components. If the ship is considered not having enough strength for temporary voyage to repairyard local repairs are necessary. Otherwise she will travel to a repair shipyard and berepaired there. The various types of problems raised in repair are dealt with in thefollowing section. Finally last section deals with salvage and recovery strategies which are necessary inthe cases of very large damage in ships.
