  • Omodernt : Människor och tankar i förmodern tid
  • 2009. - 1

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Analisi & Diritto. - Barcelona : Editorial MARCIAL PONS. - 1126-5779. ; 1, s. 73-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This essay aims to distinguish analytically the meanings of “citizenship” in the contemporary debate. According to the semantic area of reference, citizenship stands for a political status referring to the individual’s position within the polity; a legal status referring to the overall position of a subject characterized by a determinate sphere of capacities; a social status indicating the ascribed or achieved position of a person within the social stratification in the group. After distinguishing the three semantic areas and specifying the methodology used, focus switches to the structure, genesis and internal composition of the semantic areas. These are subsequently summed up in a scheme that accounts for the basic problem that a given semantic area attempts to respond to. The purpose is to explain, on the basis of practical examples, why the distinction is important and why there is so much confusion in the current debate. In the last section, I suggest another distinction, inspired by Aristotle’s third book of Politics according to which we should distinguish between what the citizen is and who a citizen is. The stake of the issue is to inquire on the plausibility of assuming that a person has to enjoy a determinate attribute or capacity in order to have the right or the legal obligation implied by the status of citizenship.

  • À l'origine du non-cognitivisme moderne : Axel Hägerström
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Analisi e Diritto. - Barcelona : Editorial MARCIAL PONS. - 1126-5779. ; 1, s. 159-176
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article on Axel Hägerström’s theory is presented in four sections. First, focus is on his meta-ethics, a perhaps lesser explored, but no less important aspect, which earned him the title of “father of modern non-cognivism”. His inaugural lecture at the Uppsala University, On the Truth of Moral Propositions from 1911 will be examined. Some very hot debates in the thirties and forties originated from this lecture that gave Hägerström his notorious nickname “axiological nihilist”. In section two, I will explain why his position cannot be properly understood as nihilism. This enables us to avoid a common misinterpretation and to illustrate in a more appropriate way Hägerström’s view of Hume’s law. By pointing to the specific features of Hägerström’s theory, the aim in section three is to determine what arguments of his can be considered the first form of modern non-cognitivism, as distinct from both classical moral relativism and Hobbes’ conventionalism. In section four, light is shed on the argumentative strategies used by Hägerström in defending the four meta-ethical theses that make up his “axiological nihilism”. This exposition enables further critical assessment on where to locate Hägerström in the contemporary debate on entanglement.

  • A Real Mind : The Life and Work of Axel Hägerström
  • 2009
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This comprehensive presentation of Axel Hägerström (1868-1939) fills a void in nearly a century of literature, providing both the legal and political scholar and the non-expert reader with a proper introduction to the father of Scandinavian realism. Based on his complete work, including unpublished material and personal correspondence selected exclusively from the Uppsala archives, A Real Mind follows the chronological evolution of Hägerström’s intellectual enterprise and offers a full account of his thought. The book summarizes Hägerström’s main arguments while enabling further critical assessment, and tries to answer such questions as: If norms are neither true nor false, how can they be adequately understood on the basis of Hägerström’s theory of knowledge? Did the founder of the Uppsala school uphold emotivism in moral philosophy? What consequences does such a standpoint have in practical philosophy? Is he really the inspiration behind Scandinavian state absolutism? A Real Mind places the complex web of issues addressed by Hägerström within the broader context of 20th century philosophy, stretching from epistemology to ethics. His philosophy of law is examined in the core chapters of the book, with emphasis on the will-theory and the relation between law and power. The narrative is peppered with vignettes from Hägerström’s life, giving an insightful and highly readable portrayal of a thinker who put his imprint on legal theory. The appendix provides a selected bibliography and a brief synopsis of the major events in his life, both private and intellectual. "The work offers an excellent reconstruction of Hägerström’s work and life, and presents his personal and intellectual evolution balancing perfectly the chronological and the systematic dimensions."Liborio L. Hierro, Professor of Jurisprudence, Faculty of Law, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain "The book is excellently-sourced, always well-argued, and makes a case for a revival of interest in Hägerström. I believe this to be important. Hägerström is relevant, insightful and interesting."Michael Freeman, LLM, Barrister, Professor of English Law, Faculty of Laws, University College London, United Kingdom

  • Tragedy as Political Theory : The Self-Destruction of Antigone's Laws
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: History of Political Thought. - 0143-781X. ; XXVI:3, s. 377-396
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper attempts to save Hegel’s claim that tragedy involves mutual guilt on the part of the adversaries in the drama. More specifically, it is claimed that a reading interested in the political theory of tragedy has to work in a different way than has hitherto often been the case. For the claims regarding the ‘subjectivity’ of interpretation can be countered if the interpretation of the play is based on an internal critique, i.e. in a normative assessment proceeding from the principles stated by the adversaries themselves. Hence it is argued that in Sophokles’ Antigone not only Kreon, but also Antigone herself is inconsistent in her attachment to the bonds of philia, of the community of the ‘one womb’ that she wishes to protect. This implies that the tragedy itself shows the self-destructive nature of Antigone’s ‘laws’ and that this normative reading can developed out of the work of art itself.

  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this dissertation, the author argues that the post-process movement towards genre-based writing pedagogies is reproducing the logic of neoliberal or free-market ideology. By analyzing the relationship between three paradigms of sovereignty (feudalism, the nation-state, and globalization) and institutionalized language, the author demonstrates that teaching writing as multiple and genred as opposed to teaching it as a single, abstract skill is no a more rational approach, but rather a differently rational approach.

  • A hero's many faces : Raoul Wallenberg in contemporary monuments
  • 2009
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Raoul Wallenberg is widely remembered for his humanitarian activity on behalf of the Hungarian Jews in Budapest at the end of World War II, and known as the Swedish diplomat who disappeared into the Soviet Gulag in 1945. Today, Wallenberg’s example is used to communicate humanitarian values and human rights in many democratic societies. His story incorporates a classical hero narrative which has survived the ‘un-heroic’ 20th century. In 2008, there exist thirty-one Wallenberg monuments in twelve countries on five continents, from Hungary to Sweden, from Canada to Chile, from Australia to Russia. The rich diversity of the monuments invites to discuss the different concepts of Wallenberg and heroism as expressed in the artists’ works. The art-historical focus of this interdisciplinary study makes it a valuable contribution to the discussion of personal monuments, as well as to the socio-historical research on the commemoration of Wallenberg and the concept of the hero.

  • Menschendämmerung : Karl Marx, Ernst Jünger und der Untergang des Selbst
  • 2005
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In one of the most controversial scholarly works published in Sweden during the last couple of years, Johan Tralau shows the relevance of alienation as a problem for political philosophy. In modernity, a conception of utopia has been influential in which there is supposed to be no alienation in relation to nature, technology or other people. In contradistinction to the traditional interpretation of the young Karl Marx, Tralau shows that the attempt to do away with alienation entails the dissolution of the individual. In that respect, this utopia can be compared to the totalitarian Worker’s state depicted by the young Ernst Jünger. Tralau argues that Jünger’s vision of the future contains a secret nihilist doctrine according to which his own utopia is an illusion, i. e., a mythological fiction that is supposed to enable man to escape from the alienation inherent in the modern world. On the basis of these destructive historical attempts at liberation from alienation, Tralau expounds an anti-utopian defence of the alienated condition, arguing that alienation is a prerequisite of liberty.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Political Theory. - 1474-8851. ; IV:4, s. 393-412
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article attempts to present a reconstructive interpretation of the utopian self as portrayed in the writings of the young Marx. The main currents of interpretation claim that utopian society enhances individual liberty. However, the argument of this paper is that Marx’s utopia entails the opposite, namely, the dissolution of the self. If human alienation in relation to nature is to be overcome, then the difference between man and nature must simply be annihilated. Thus, the utopian self appropriates and masters nature completely and turns it into something that is identical to man himself. Likewise, the alienation inherent in human relations is eliminated through the disappearance of the differences between people. This means that individuality is annihilated in the utopian society; if the supersession of alienation means doing away with the difference between the self, the others, and nature, then it also means the end of human liberty.

    • A Divine King Excommunicated: Legitimisation of Power and Ideology of Kingship in Sverris SagaThis article investigates how Sverrir Sigurðarson, ruler of Norway between 1177 and 1202, is ideologically legitimised as king in the biography Sverris saga. In previous research, the perception that Sverrir is portrayed as a Christian rex iustus has competed with the perception that Sverrir is depicted as a traditional Old Norse warrior king, who gains his legitimacy through his military successes. This article demonstrates that the rex iustus idea is central in the saga when it comes to legitimising Sverrir, and that his seizure of power is also placed in the salvation-historical worldview of the time. Fully in accordance with the way contemporary continental European kings legitimised their claims to power, Sverrir’s royal power is justified in the saga through a combination of the notion that God has chosen Sverrir as king and the notion of a line of succession to the throne through paternal blood ties. The article also demonstrates that the saga, like the polemic pamphlet A Speech against the Bishops (Ett tal mot biskoparna), propagates against the perception that the Church is above the royal power and dismisses the Church’s excommunication of Sverrir as unjust and invalid.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Kulturstudier i Sverige.

  • Our Preeminently Social Activity: Ludwik Fleck and Thought in History
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Ideas in History. - 1890-1832. ; 2:3, s. 9-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to introduce the approach and core concepts of Ludwik Fleck as resources for the study of general intellectual history. An interpretation of Fleck’s texts on ‘comparative epistemology’ and his theory of ‘thought-style and thoughtcollective’ is outlined, stressing for example that scientific thought was treated as an integrated phenomenon among other forms of human thought (and that this was a main point in Fleck’s understanding of science), and that the explicit moral of his analysis was in essence a ‘democratic’ appeal for openness and criticism against intellectual hubris. The proposed interpretation gives prominence especially to Fleck’s concept of Denkverkehr (‘intercourse’ between thinking people and ‘traffic’ in words and phrases), and to his implicit assumption that human thought (‘ideas’) is nothing but a form of action, and as such a particularly ‘social’ form of activity, eminently suited to be studied in terms of processes of social interaction, situated in historical time and space.

  • 2002
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation is a study of anthropological research in 19th century Sweden. Its point of departure is the Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography, founded in 1873. Emphasis is placed on the work of the Society's quartet of founders, physical anthropologist Gustaf Retzius, archaeologists Hans Hildebrand and Oscar Montelius and ethnographerarchaeologist Hjalmar Stolpe. By taking the entire range of their interests into account, a fuller picture can be drawn than by just focusing on any one of these, later separately institutionalized, fields of research. The dissertation is divided into three parts. Part 1 deals with conditions, both national and international, surrounding the foundation of the Swedish Society for Anthropology. Part 2 focuses on the ethnographical museum work of Hjalmar Stolpe. Through him, a social history of 19th century ethnography can be written, as well as an inquiry made into the epistemology of ethnography and archaeology as museum sciences of culture. Also, the importance of 19th century German cultural anthropology for the Swedes is established. Part 3 deals with the problems of race and ethnicity at the intersection between archaeology and physical anthropology. The role of the so-called "Aryan hypothesis" is explored as well as the rise of Aryan supremacist ideas in science at the turn of the 20th century, providing new facts about the establishment of the racial biology movement in Sweden.

  • 2002
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The present study discusses three unveilings of statues in mid 19th century Sweden: Gustavus Adolphus in Gothenburg in 1854, Engelbrekt in Örebro in 1865, and Charles XII in Stockholm in 1868. The main theme of the study is the connection between history and contemporary politics. The unveilings of statues inspired the production of history in a number of different genres. Speeches, plays, poems, popular pieces and scholarly works were all part of the same process. These historical narratives portrayed and framed connections between concepts such as memory, history, the region, the nation, the past and the future. The unveilings of statues provided a public forum for the production of a national history: the narratives produced history for current political purposes. National conceptions were often linked to concrete practices and events. Several mid-19th century projects of political reform were used in this way. Therefore I consider it more adequate to use the notion of nation building, rather than nationalism. My study combines three different perspectives: firstly, a stance on monument history which rejects the modernist view on art, aiming instead to put the statue in its historical context; secondly, a view on the history of public life which sees public events as formative; and thirdly, an ambition to investigate the characteristics of the nation, as presented within the historical context of a 19th century statue unveiling. The purpose of this combination of perspectives is to link the discussion of monuments and public events to a more comprehensive description of the shaping of a nation.

  • Bengt Emil Johnson’s Bland orrar och kor and the Legacy of 1960’s Sound Technology : Bengt Emil Johnson - after Concretism
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: "Avant-Garde and Technology", 2005-11-25, Stockholm.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Bengt Emil Johnson was one of the most prominent poets of the short-lived yet highly vivid Swedish concretist movement of the early 1960’s. As for most poets involved in this movement, his carreer soon turned to other manners of writing, in his case more successfully than for many of his fellow concretists. During the second half of the 1960’s he was involved in creating the interartial genre of text-sound-composition, and ever since then he has been an internationally acclaimed composer of electro-acoustic music. Since the 1970’s he has also been recognised as an important innovator in the field of nature-poetry, displaying an attitude as keen and attentive towards the abundance of language as it is towards that of nature. Through this sensitivity he has been able to examine and unfold intriguing correspondences between language and nature. Apart from being a poet during the first half of the 1960’s, Johnson was also a writer of manifestos and essays concerning aesthetic matters. He quite frequently appeared in the press as well as in several of the important Swedish periodicals of the time. Quite a few of the aesthetical texts he wrote during this period were concerned with the artistic potential that was to be found in new technology, especially sound-technology. Particularly interesting are a number of texts which he wrote in collaboration with Lars-Gunnar Bodin. Johnson and Bodin were not, however, the only Swedish artists writing manifestos and essays from these perspectives during those years. Someone else who did was Öyvind Fahlström, the patriarch of the Swedish concretist movement. In my paper I trace a rhetoric in a number of aesthetic essays and manifestos by all these writers published between the years 1954-1965, a rhetoric which in several ways has its aim fixed on connecting technological and scientific breakthrough to artistic breakthrough. In this way I try to point out the fact that a number of the ideals behind the radical avant-garde writing strategies used by Johnson and his compatriots during his concretist years had a technological origin. I also go on to show to what extent these strategies linger in Johnson’s later writing, what part they play, and in what ways they appear. The examples I use from his later writing consist of three, among themselves quite different, poems from his 1989 poetry collection Bland orrar och kor (Amongst Black Grouse and Cows). I aim to show that Johnson, in these poems, still uses techniques appropriated from, and inspired by, mid-century sound-technological landmarks such as the contact-microphone, multiple layer recording, cut-up- and pitching techniques. And all of these technologies and techniques were discussed in the aesthetic writings of Johnson, Bodin, and Fahlström, respectively, during the 1950’s and 1960’s. And all of them were mentioned as holding great artistic potential.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: AI & Society. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0951-5666 .- 1435-5655. ; 23:4, s. 545-558
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A case study of growers conception of irrigation strategies indicates that pot plant growers in Scandinavia base their management approaches on experientially based art. The study also indicates that there is a gap between experientially based art and available greenhouse technology. In order to standardize production and produce quality, both the grower's experience and available technology should be taken into account. In order to achieve this, the present study proposes to arrange reflection on reflection in action with a group of growers by means of the dialogue seminar method. The concept of reflection on reflection in action is novel to horticultural practice. Therefore, we suggest future inter- and multidisciplinary research within this domain.

  • Den svårfångade relativismen: en uppslagsbok
  • 2008

    • Aims The aim of this article is to investigate the use of a rather vague medical conceptual framework within the compulsory treatment of alcohol and drug users in Sweden during the 20th century. Focus lies on exploring how a phenomenon come to be described as pathological, what the causes are for certain actions all of a sudden being interpreted in medical terms, and what consequences that might lead to. Design Supported by theoretical speculations on medicalization processes and conceptual history, two empirical cases (the compulsory care of alcohol abusers in the 1950’s and the legislative process leading to psychiatric compulsory care of drug users in the late 1960’s) are investigated. The first case draws mainly upon official reports and archive material from alcohol treatment institutions, whilst the second case is built from reading official reports and parliamentary material. The research task for the two empirical cases has not quite been the same: whereas the first case is illustrated by the discrepancies between the labelling of treatment activities and the treatment actually carried out, the second case rather draws upon the enlargement of the field of signification of the disease concept to cover most aspects of drug use. Results A medicalization process on different levels is traced both in the post-war compulsory treatment of alcohol abusers as well as being a part of the launching of compulsory psychiatric care of drug abusers from the late 1960’s onwards. Conclusion The investigated cases shows how the medicalization processes gained from a conceptual vagueness, a widening of the conceptual dimensions of both the treatment and disease concepts. In this, the medicalization of alcohol abuse in the 1950’s and drug abuse in the 1960’s made way for a paternalistic justification of compulsory care measures that might otherwise have become politically troublesome.

    • An 11th C. bishop and missionary to northern Sweden—including the territories of the Sami—named Stenphi and renamed Simeon, was reused under a third name, Staffan (Lat.: Stephanus), in a 15th C. chronicle. Here, he was casted as a martyr and a grave was identified. Paradoxically, Simeon's posthumous career as a martyr was given additional strength by the Reformation, when exiled Catholics fought to reclaim the history of Christianity in Sweden. The alleged martyr lived on in literature, tradition and folklore and still does so.

    • Rangnar Nilsson: Good science: How researchers’ conceptions of science expressed in peer review documents change in three different disciplines (God vetenskap: Hur forskares vetenskapsuppfattningar uttryckta i sakkunnigutlåtanden förändras i tre skilda discipliner). Ph.D. Dissertation in Swedish, with a summary in English. Department of Literature, History of Ideas and Religion, University of Gothenburg, 2009. ISBN: 978-91-7346-638-7. This dissertation examines the variety in perceptions of science and research in the academic communities of political science, literature studies and physics in Sweden 1950-1995 as expressed in expert evaluations of professorship candidates. The study relates commonalities as well as differences in these perceptions to internal conditions of the research field, and to the extramural settings and conditions of Swedish academia. Research is thus considered as a historically situated, socially entangled and contingent societal activity that produces knowledge in close concurrence with the surrounding society. The analysis of quality assessments for each discipline examines which of the following aspects of the works reviewed by expert panels are focused in their evaluation reports: problem, method, theory, object, results, writing, the totality of the work or the researcher him- or herself. Based on the panelists’ treatment of these aspects the thesis highlights the concomitant internal perceptions of science and research in each case. It is found that early on in expert evaluations, political science tends to be depicted as a research field largely focused on the research methods. The methods frequently define areas of research, and credibility is typically attained through proper use of reliable methods. Towards the end of the 1900s, political scientists took a new interest in theory, while the knowledge produced was described in less definitive or absolute words. Expert panels reviewing literature studies were traditionally more inclined to focus on the object of research or its material, whereas the methods used were rarely diagnosed. With time, however, one finds a theoretical turn, in as much as theory gained a new appreciation in this discipline as well, and it is, moreover, clearly considered as an active ingredient in knowledge production in the 1990s. As in political science, the descriptions of results - as depicted in evaluations - change from rather final pronouncements to ones that are more tentative. Such a trend may also be seen in the physicists’ evaluations. In that case evaluation reports largely home in on the results in general, but they also - when actual results are described - make explicit references to linkages with external actors or industry. The respective differences identified are analyzed as products of the history of each discipline, inherent requirements and differential relationships to the society outside of the academia.
