  • Natural language processing for aviation safety : Extracting knowledge from publicly-available loss of separation reports
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Open Research Europe. - : F1000 Research Ltd. - 2732-5121. ; , s. 1-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The air traffic management (ATM) system has historicallycoped with a global increase in traffic demand ultimately leading toincreased operational complexity. When dealing with the impact of this increasing complexity on systemsafety it is crucial to automatically analyse the losses of separation(LoSs) using tools able to extract meaningful and actionableinformation from safety reports.Current research in this field mainly exploits natural languageprocessing (NLP) to categorise the reports, with the limitations that theconsidered categories need to be manually annotated by experts andthat general taxonomies are seldom exploited. Methods: To address the current gaps, authors propose to performexploratory data analysis on safety reports combining state-of-the-arttechniques like topic modelling and clustering and then to develop analgorithm able to extract the Toolkit for ATM Occurrence Investigation(TOKAI) taxonomy factors from the free-text safety reports based onsyntactic analysis.TOKAI is a tool for investigation developed by EUROCONTROL and itstaxonomy is intended to become a standard and harmonisedapproach to future investigations. Results: Leveraging on the LoS events reported in the publicdatabases of the Comisi n de Estudio y An lisis de Notificaciones deIncidentes de Tr nsito A reo and the United Kingdom AirproxBoard, authors show how their proposal is able to automaticallyextract meaningful and actionable information from safetyreports, other than to classify their content according to the TOKAItaxonomy. The quality of the approach is also indirectly validated by checking theconnection between the identified factors and the main contributor ofthe incidents. Conclusions: Authors' results are a promising first step toward the fullautomation of a general analysis of LoS reports supported by resultson real-world data coming from two different sources. In the future, authors' proposal could be extended to othertaxonomies or tailored to identify factors to be included in the safetytaxonomies.KeywordsATM, Safety, Resilience, Natural Language Processing, Losses ofSeparation, Safety Reports, TOKAI

  • Ethical consumption : why should we understand it as a social practice within a multilevel framework?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Open Research Europe. - : European Commission. - 2732-5121. ; 2:109
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the importance of a multilevel and intertwined understanding of ethical consumption given its conjunction with other social practices. Although the literature on ethical consumption is vast, the role of sociotechnical regimes including technological and cultural elements, infrastructure, market and regulation has been mainly overlooked in this literature. This may be so because ethical consumption practices that refer to other-oriented consumption practices are mainly considered in the view of the motivations and preferences of individual consumers. Due to the insufficiency of     individualistic approaches to explain stimulators and inhibitors of ethical consumption, indicates there might be “various constraints” in society and “competing demands” to hamper consumers from acting ethically. Therefore, to avoid an oversimplified view of ethical consumption, this paper contributes with a theoretical discussion on combining social practice theory (SPT) with a multi-level perspective (MLP). Although the SPT is a very well-structured framework in consumption studies, the necessity of a combined approach concerns the often-insufficient attention paid to structural prerequisites of various consumption forms in social practice theories. By understanding ethical consumption practices according to a multilevel framework, the paper emphasizes the importance of structural factors at macro- and mesolevels. It also contributes attention to how ethical consumption grows due to dialectical processes between levels, showing that niche practices can simultaneously challenge and rely on existing regimes

  • Mapping research on the social impact of the arts: what characterises the field?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Open Research Europe. - : F1000 Research Ltd. - 2732-5121. ; 1:124
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the broad and undefined research field of the social impact of the arts. The effects of art and culture are often used as justification for public funding, but the research on these interventions and their effects is unclear. Using a co-word analysis of over 10,000 articles published between 1990 and 2020, we examined the characteristics of the field as we have operationalised it through our searches. We found that since 2015 this research field has expanded and consists of different epistemologies and methodologies, summarised in largely overlapping subfields belonging to the social sciences, humanities, arts education, and arts and health/therapy. In formal or informal learning settings, studies of theatre/drama as an intervention to enhance skills, well-being, or knowledge among children are most common in our corpus. A study of the research front through the bibliographic coupling of the most cited articles in the corpus confirmed the co-word analysis and revealed new themes that together form the ground for insight into research on the social impact of the arts. This article can therefore inform discussions on the social value of culture and the arts.

  • Facilitating transformative innovations in sustainability education
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Open Research Europe. - : F1000 Research Ltd. - 2732-5121. ; 2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Educational strategies globally are changing from an authoritative, top-down model to one focused on greater student and stakeholder participation in planning and implementation of research and educational activities. In addition to emphasis on student-centered education, strategies currently evolve to encompass learning organizations and multistakeholder learning networks. These are essential to address the complexity and scope of tomorrow’s challenges, involving issues that could be called ’wicked problems’ not easily addressed by single disciplines nor resulting in solutions that please all the players. In this study we describe how a transformative innovation – the NEXTFOOD educational approach – may contribute substantially to a transition of agricultural and food education and how it can be developed and diffused within and between teaching institutions. The method was action research informed by several workshops organized at annual consortium conferences during the first three years of the project. The findings show that a successful transformation involves learning both within and across innovation projects repeated at various organisations in a network. The action research model presented in this paper may be useful as an instrument to support the facilitation of transformative innovations. The transition process resulted in substantial changes in mindset, educational practices and organisational structures at the teaching institutions. However, scaling-up promising educational initiatives may encounter several barriers that need to be overcome at individual, group and institutional levels, and we provide insight on how this can be accomplished in a multi-national consortium of universities.

  • The state of the art in beyond 5G distributed massive multiple-input multiple-output communication system solutions
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Open Research Europe. - : F1000 Research Ltd. - 2732-5121. ; 2
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Beyond fifth generation (5G) communication systems aim towards data rates in the tera bits per second range, with improved and flexible coverage options, introducing many new technological challenges in the fields of network architecture, signal pro- cessing, and radio frequency front-ends. One option is to move towards cell-free, or distributed massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) network architectures and highly integrated front-end solutions. This paper presents an outlook on be- yond 5G distributed massive MIMO communication systems, the signal processing, characterisation and simulation challenges, and an overview of the state of the art in millimetre wave antennas and electronics.
