  • Inclusive V-0 production cross sections from 920 GeV fixed target proton-nucleus collisions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 29:2, s. 181-190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inclusive differential cross sections dsigma(pA)/dx(F) and dsigma(pA)/dp(t)(2) for the production of K-S(0), Lambda, and (&ULambda;) over bar particles are measured at HERA in proton-induced reactions on C, Al, Ti, and W targets. The incident beam energy is 920 GeV, corresponding to roots = 41.6 GeV in the proton-nucleon system. The ratios of differential cross sections dsigma(pA)(K-S(0))/dsigma(pA)(Lambda) and dsigma(pA)((&ULambda;) over bar)/dsigma(pA) (Lambda) are measured to be 6.2 +/- 0.5 and 0.66 +/- 0.07, respectively, for x(F) approximate to -0.06. No significant dependence upon the target material is observed. Within errors, the slopes of the transverse momentum distributions da,Ald t also show no significant dependence upon the target material. The dependence of the extrapolated total cross sections sigma(pA) on the atomic mass A of the target material is discussed, and the deduced cross sections per nucleon sigma(pN) are compared with results obtained at other energies.

  • Measurement of the b(b)over-bar production cross section in 920 GeV fixed-target proton-nucleus collisions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 26:3, s. 345-355
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the HERA-B detector, the b (b) over bar production cross section has been measured in 920 GeV proton collisions on carbon and titanium targets. The b (b) over bar production was tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into J/psi by exploiting the longitudinal separation of J/psi --> l(+)l(-) decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction. Both e(+)e(-) and mu(+)mu(-) channels have been reconstructed and the combined analysis yields the cross section sigma(b (b) over bar) = 32(-12)(+14)(stat) (+6)(-7)(sys) nb/nucleon.

  • Helicity dependence of the gamma p -> N pi channels and multipole analysis in the Delta region
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001. ; 21:2, s. 323-333
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A high-quality double-polarization data set for the helicity dependence of the total and differential cross-sections for both gammap --> Npi channels in the Delta region has been obtained in the framework of the GDH experiment. The experiment, performed at the Mainz microtron MAMI, used a 4pi detection system, a circularly polarized photon beam, and a longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target. These data are included in the database to perform a multipole analysis to determine the properties of the Delta(1232)-resonance. For the resonant Delta(1232) multipoles we find a very good agreement with previous analyses, while the nonresonant ones show significant deviations.

  • Experimental check of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule for H-1
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 93:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For the first time we checked the fundamental Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule for the proton experimentally in the photon energy range from 0.2-2.9 GeV with the tagged photon facilities at MAMI (Mainz) and ELSA (Bonn). New data of the doubly polarized total cross section difference are presented in the energy range from 1.6 to 2.9 GeV. The contribution to the GDH integral from 0.2-2.9 GeV yields [254+/-5(stat)+/-12(syst)] mub with negative contributions in the Regge regime at photon energies above 2.1 GeV. This trend supports the validity of the GDH sum rule.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 91:19: 192001
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To verify the fundamental Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule for the first time experimentally, we measured the helicity dependent total photoabsorption cross section with circularly polarized real photons and longitudinally polarized nucleons in the photon energy range 0.68-1.82 GeV with the tagged photon facility at ELSA. The experiment was carried out with a 4pi detection system, a circularly polarized tagged photon beam, and a frozen spin polarized proton target. The contribution to the GDH sum rule in this photon energy range is [49.9+/-2.4(stat)+/-2.2(syst)] mub.

  • Influence of administration dose and route on the immunogenicity and protective efficacy of BBG2Na, a recombinant respiratory syncytial virus subunit vaccine candidate
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Vaccine. - 0264-410X .- 1873-2518. ; 18:24, s. 2735-2742
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The immunogenicity and protective efficacy of BBG2Na, a novel recombinant respiratory syncytial virus subunit vaccine candidate, was assessed in BALB/c mice under various conditions of dose, administration route and number of immunisations. A single intra-peritoneal (i.p.) dose of 2 mu g, or two doses of 0.2 mu g, were sufficient to induce elevated RSV-A serum antibodies and sterilising lung protective immunity. Serum antibody titres were significantly boosted following second immunisations, but not a third. Of three routes of immunisation, i.p. induced the highest RSV-A antibody titres, followed in efficacy by the intramuscular (i.m.) and subcutaneous (s.c.) routes. Nonetheless, all three routes induced comparable and sterilising lung protection. In contrast, upper respiratory tract protection was observed only after i.p. vaccination, although significant viral titre reductions were evident following i.m. or s.c. immunisations. Interestingly, Pepscan analyses indicated that antibody epitope usage was highest in i.p. and lowest in i.m. immunised mice, respectively. Nonetheless, all routes resulted in antibody responses to known lung protective epitopes (protectopes). Thus, the prevention of serious lower respiratory tract disease, the principle goal of a RSV vaccine, but not URT infection, is dose dependent but unlikely to be influenced by the route of BBG2Na administration.

    • The next generation of 4 pi arrays for high-precision gamma -ray spectroscopy will involve "gamma -ray tracking front-end on digital signal processing techniques, which allows to extract energy, timing and spatial information on the interactions of a gamma -ray in the Ge detector by pulse shape analysis of its signals. Utilizing the information on the positions of the interaction points and the energies released at each point the tracks of the gamma -rays in a Ge shell can be reconstructed in three dimensions.

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Optics Communications. - 0030-4018 .- 1873-0310. ; 190:06-jan, s. 317-326
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We describe the development of a table top soft X-ray source based on a laser produced plasma. The plasma is produced by a Nd:YLF pulse-train laser which delivers pulse trains of up to 400 pulses each of about 25 ps duration, Number and energy of the micropulses are fully computer controlled adjustable for an optimum interaction with a rotating solid target. Spectral, spatial and temporal characteristics of the X-ray emission from Mylar and copper targets have been studied. A calibrated back-illuminated CCD camera together with a slit grating spectrograph were utilized for the measurement of the absolute soft X-ray photon fluxes. The temporal measurements were performed using a streak camera while the plasma size was measured with a zone plate. An application of the system in a X-ray absorption experiment is shown, The advantages of the system in view of possible optical pump and soft X-ray probe experiments will be discussed.

  • Fabrication and characterization of a molecular adhesive layer for micro- and nanofabricated electrochemical electrodes
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: 7th International Conference on Nanometer-Scale Science and Technology and 21st European Conference on Surface Science.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When making nanoelectrodes for applications in liquid cells it is plausible that the less noble metal layer may be negatively affected, i.e. it will be etched away leading to very unstable conditions during operation. Here we describe a dry method to produce such a molecular layer consisting of mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane (MPTS) making it possible to controllable and reproducibly form a covalently bound monolayer of MPTS to the SiO2 surface. From Photoelectron Spectroscopy measurements we could conclude that the layer thickness corresponds to a monolayer. We have electrochemically characterized such electrodes by cyclic voltammetry. Furthermore, we have successfully patterned such layers at both micro- and nanometer scale showing the possibilities to fabricate chemically selective and active areas that may be used in various applications

Such nanosized devices can be applied as biosensors where new functions might emerge due to the nanoscale dimensions. In this paper we will discuss various nanolithography methods as well as the benefits of going to the nanoscale for biosensor applications. We will also show results from mixed NIL and UV-lithography for fabrication of interdigitated nanobiosensor electrodes on up to 6'' large Si wafers. The electrode and inter-electrode distances were 100 nm wide over a total area of 200 μm×200 μm. We will also show the obtained enhanced efficiency of redox-recycling when utilizing such nanoscaled biosensors

  • Progress in integrated assessment and modelling
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Environmental Modelling & Software. - 1364-8152. ; 17:3, s. 209-217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Environmental processes have been modelled for decades. However. the need for integrated assessment and modeling (IAM) has, town as the extent and severity of environmental problems in the 21st Century worsens. The scale of IAM is not restricted to the global level as in climate change models, but includes local and regional models of environmental problems. This paper discusses various definitions of IAM and identifies five different types of integration that Lire needed for the effective solution of environmental problems. The future is then depicted in the form of two brief scenarios: one optimistic and one pessimistic. The current state of IAM is then briefly reviewed. The issues of complexity and validation in IAM are recognised as more complex than in traditional disciplinary approaches. Communication is identified as a central issue both internally among team members and externally with decision-makers. stakeholders and other scientists. Finally it is concluded that the process of integrated assessment and modelling is considered as important as the product for any particular project. By learning to work together and recognise the contribution of all team members and participants, it is believed that we will have a strong scientific and social basis to address the environmental problems of the 21st Century.

  • Incremental Encoding of Multiple Inheritance Hierarchies Supporting Lattice Operations
  • 2000
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Incremental updates to multiple inheritance hierachies are becoming more prevalent with the increasing number of persistent applications supporting complex objects. Efficient computation of lattice operations such as greatest lower bound (GLB), least upper bound (LUB), and subsumption subsequently is becoming more and more important. General techniques for compact encoding of a hierarchy are presented that support the operations, and are flexible enough to allow incremental updates to the hierarchy. One such method is to plunge the given ordering into a boolean lattice of binary words, leading to an almost constant time complexity of the lattice operations. The method is based on an inverted version of the encoding of Aït-Kaci et al. to allow incremental update. Simple grouping is used to reduce the code space while keeping the lattice operations efficient. Comparisons are made to an incremental version of the range compression scheme of Agrawal et al., where each class is assigned an interval, and relationships are based on containment in the interval. The result is two incoding methods which have their relative merits.

  • Design and application of a zone plate monochromator for laboratory soft x-ray sources
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 72:1, s. 53-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we describe the test of a zone plate monochromator for a laboratory soft x-ray source which is a laser produced plasma on a liquid jet target. The monochromator consists of a zone plate and a pinhole. Due to the special zone plate used (condensor zone plate KZP7) the monochromator is particularly suitable for laboratory sources since it collects a relatively large solid angle in the present setup. Depending upon the diameter of the pinhole a monochromaticity of up to lambda/Delta lambda =600 can be achieved. The usefulness of the linear monochromator was proven on the basis of a filter transmission measurement. The monochromator can be used for several applications. In particular it is suitable for time-resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy and pump and probe experiments. The use for such investigations is discussed.
